Please note that camera is released under different brand names for different countries / regions - Canon EOS 100DCanon EOS Kiss x7 and Canon EOS Rebel SL1. I was visited by two cameras: Canon EOS Rebel SL1 (some of the sample photos in this review were shot on it) and Canon EOS 100D.
Canon EOS 100D review
The Canon EOS 100D was introduced on March 21, 2013, along with the more advanced Canon EOS. 700D, and an updated stock ('kit') lens Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM. Unfortunately, I came across a kit with a conventional, not an STM lens, namely the Canon EOS 100D with Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS II (a little later, Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM).

The main feature of the Canon EOS 100D is its little weight... We can say for sure that the Canon 100D is the lightest APS-C format DSLR (at least as of Spring 2014 when this review was made). With battery and memory card, it weighs only 407 grams. If you take out all that is superfluous, then the weight becomes equal to 370 g. Personally, I am very much attracted by the super-light DSLR camera with a large matrix (crop factor 1.6) for carrying on hikes, to friends, around the city and, in general, for every day. And the small camera body looks like an advanced 'soap box' rather than an SLR camera. The smaller the size of the camera, the less you attract the attention of others :).
The small weight of the camera stands out from other Canon SLR cameras and other manufacturers. Of course, there are CZKs and with a lower weight, for example, the Olympus E420, but also crop factor Olympus already has 2.0 :(. Well, a number of mirrorless cameras weigh much less than the Canon EOS 100D, but mirrorless cameras are a completely different story.

Due to its small size and weight, the camera uses an LP-E12 battery, which lasts only 400-500 shots, which is significantly less than on other central control centers (for example, charging an old woman D40 with a fix lasts for more than a thousand clicks of the shutter). Therefore, if you intend to purchase such a camera for more or less lengthy photo shoots, then you will have to think about buying a spare battery.
But still, the Canon EOS 100D remains quite large, and therefore it retains the remains of a convenient grip on the body, especially since the front of the handle is rubberized. However, as soon as you put a “serious” lens or an external flash on the camera, it immediately becomes clear that all this stuff may not fit in a regular handbag :).
Sizes of Canon EOS 100D and Canon EOS 350D
The camera can be very easily and pleasantly controlled using a touch screen that supports multi-touch and this is no more complicated than a modern smartphone. 3-inch display with 1.040.000 points. A similar display is available for models. Canon 650D, 700D и 70D, but only on more advanced cameras, the display is also rotary.
I am very pleased that the touch control on Canon cameras is so well implemented and at times surpasses it on some mirrorless cameras, for example, such as Olympus OM-D E-M1. Unfortunately, Canon already has four SLR cameras with touch controls, while its direct competitor, Nikon, has none :(.

In normal shooting mode, the Canon 100D uses a 9-point focus that has already become classic, with the center point being a cross-shaped one, with a high-precision sensor that turns on when using high-aperture optics. This focus module appeared in the old woman Canon 20D and used to this day. You can read more about the focusing modules for Canon cameras. here.

But in Live View (when focusing using the main display) for the first time used new Hybrid CMOS AF II focusing system... Phase sensors located on the matrix itself are used to determine the focusing direction, and the usual contrast focusing method is used for precise focusing. Unlike the similar focusing system in the models Canon 650D, 700D, EOS M, the Canon 100D has significantly increased the coverage area of the frame with phase sensors, which is about 80%, while on cameras with the first generation Hybrid CMOS AF system, the coverage area is much smaller. For video shooting, the development of new hybrid focusing systems is very, very popular. The full potential of the Hybrid CMOS AF II is revealed only when using new lenses with STM-motors (STM — STepper Motor - stepping motor focusing), which allow you to quickly and accurately focus on sharpness during video and photography.
Of course, the Canon 100D in Live View focuses much better than cameras without a hybrid focusing system, but it's a pity that the Live View focus is often wrong and, in general, it works slowly, flickers, and often cannot quickly focus on sharpness . Focusing works noticeably worse than on some mirrorless cameras (which use focus mode when Live View is enabled by default). Personally, the Hybrid CMOS AF II was a little disappointing to me, but still, it's much better than nothing.
Canon 100D with full-time lens Canon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 STM
The camera can shoot at maximum speed 4 fps. That's just frame buffer not very capacious. If you disable all the additional functions that reduce the number of shots:
- Peripheral correction. lighting (vignetting)
- Chromate correction. aberrations
- ISO auto
- Auto Brightness
- Shumopod. when it lasts. shutter speed
- Shumopod. at high ISO
- ISO range extension
- Light priority
then it will fit into the buffer:
- 7 RAW format shots
- 9 pictures in JPEG format, quality L, but the series of pictures becomes almost endless
- 4 pictures in RAW + JPEG format
If you enable all additional functions, then it will fit into the buffer:
- 6 RAW format shots
- 4-5 pictures in JPEG format, quality L
- 2 pictures in RAW + JPEG format
For review, I took test shots in RAW + JPEG mode, with some additional features turned on, and, after two frames, the camera switched to thoughts about life, the universe, and in general, which kept me waiting for the buffer to be released :(.
Canon 100D with lens Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon 100D can use ISO 100 to 25.600 units, however, the value of 25.600 in the camera means 'H' ('High' - 'high') and it can be turned on only when the highlight priority function is turned off. Also, ISO above 6400 is not available when shooting movies. The camera has an excellent 'ISO auto' function, although it is also limited by a ceiling of 6400 units, but it works even in manual camera control mode, in video mode, and even with manual lenses. The only pity is that you cannot set the exposure limits, the camera selects them by itself, taking into account the focal length of the lens. I do not recommend shooting at 6400 or higher.
Canon EOS 100D body and Canon EOS 70D body
Of course, one cannot do without high-quality video filming. You can shoot at Full HD 1920 x 1080 30p (29.97 or 25 or 23.98 fps), and if you reduce the size to HD 1280 x 720 you can shoot at 59,94 and 50 fps. For those who do not need heavy video files, there is a 640 x 480 mode with a frequency of 30 or 25 fps. Video is written in MOV format with H.264 codec and mono sound. Video control available shutter speed, aperture and ISO value :). Full exposure control is lacking in such Amateur Nikon Cameras.
Like most modern cameras, the Canon EOS 100D crammed with a large variety of functions and features:
- Built-in help for beginners, allowing you to quickly get acquainted with the camera :).
- Many different 'creative' filters, as well as the ability to edit captured photos right in the camera.
- The camera can create short videos, sometimes it can be a fun feature.
- There is also an automatic sensor cleaning system.
- Built-in flash, the power of which is quite enough for most tasks.
- Measurement exposure is performed using a 63-zone sensor with dual layer SPC and iFCL, the same as on a huge number of other Canon EOS cameras. Detailed information on this issue can be found in the section 'Canon Camera Metering Sensors'.
- The camera has a special sensor that turns off the display when you bring the camera to your face.
- The ability to shoot with one touch to the camera display (like on smartphones).
- Near the camera mount there is a DOF preview button.
- There is an input for a stereo microphone, a remote control cable, as well as USB and Mini HDMI connectors

Caution, spoiler: recently, Canon has released cameras based on the same 18 MP matrix (in fact, images contain only 17.915.904 pixels). Based on this matrix, which was first used in Canon 7D, a whole horde of cameras was built: Canon EOS M, M2, Canon 60D, 60 Da, 550D, 600D, 650D, 700D.100D 1200D. Of course, the matrix was periodically updated, so in Canon 650D, 700D, 100D, EOS M, M2 sensors for phase focusing were built into it, some cameras expanded the ISO limits by one step and no one will tell you exactly what has been finalized. The same goes for signal processing algorithms. But as the image no major shifts occurred. Moreover, according to synthetic tests, older Canon cameras outperform the new ones in some image quality parameters. Here link on dxomark, where it is clearly visible :(. Where is the world heading?

When choosing my first DSLR, Canon cameras were most comfortable in the hand - like a glove, but the circumstances were such that I chose a different system. So sometimes I catch myself thinking that if I have to change the system it will be Canon.
Arkady, is it not known whether Nikon will use hybrid focusing in Live View mode, like Canon? When comparing the 70D and the D7100 when focusing in Live View, the Canon 70D delivers incredible focusing speed and accuracy. The D7100 is hopelessly behind the 70D in this respect. Autofocus crawls back and forth, clings hard and for a long time. And if the shooting conditions are also not very good - it's a pipe. It's a shame for Nikon. Is such a system looming on the horizon, coupled with touch controls from Nikon?

By synthetic tests on dxomark Nikon turns out to be the best, but considering the possibility of convenient use of manual Soviet lenses, Sony bypasses both Nikon and Canon. Often I think whether to change Canon to Sony A58
Just a DXOMark lab in France. And France is friends with Sony, respectively, Nikon with Sony matrices is among the favorites. Don't take DXO metrics to heart. I have 100D and D7100 on my hands, the only thing that Nikon wins in is ISO, but I can't say that the gap is 400 units, judging by the ravages. And what they write in terms of color, DD - I do not agree 100%, but only 20%.
