MC Helios-44M-4 58mm 1: 2 review

All lenses MS 44m-4, MS 44m-5, MS 44m-6, MS 44m-7 (Jupiter factory) are outwardly identical to each other. For more information about the capabilities of the MC HELIOS-44M-X series lenses, see MC Helios-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 review. The difference between them mainly, lies only in the resolution of the optics. Here is a plate for the resolution of the lenses of the MC HELIOS-44M-X 58mm 1: 2 series of Valdai production:

MS 44m-4 MS 44m-5 MS 44m-6 MS 44m-7
Resolution according to technical specifications (center / region): 41/20 41/20 45/25 50/30
Light transmission coefficient: 0,85 0,85 0,9 0,9

More examples of photos on the MC Helios-44M-4 58mm 1: 2 I periodically add to separate gallery at 500px. There, next to each photo, you can see EXIF with all the basic shooting options.

Below are examples of photos on the MC Helios-44M-4 58mm 1: 2 and on the cameras Nikon D700, Nikon D500, Nikon D90, Sony NEX-3N:

Personally, I am completely satisfied with the MC Helios-44M-4. From the point of view of practical application, I do not see any particular reason to look for a more expensive TOP model MS 44m-7... Although, nevertheless, modifications with major numbers are slightly better. Here link to the archive with the originals - 333 MB, 34 photos in the format RAW with Canon 5D & Canon 350D.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.

    Nice one :)

  • Oleg

"Although still slightly better modifications with higher numbers." - decipher, please, this is about what models? I just choose Helios for myself, I want to figure it out.

    • Oleg

      Yeah, got it.

  • Andrei

For a full-frame matrix with a resolution of 12 mr, the resolution is enough for the eyes, and the pattern for all helios in this series is identical.

  • Oleg

The author of the article indicates that the lenses of MS 44m-6, MS 44m-7 are better in technical characteristics than the MS 44m-4.

    • anonym

      K.O.

  • 10111

First, the plant is called “Jupiter”, and Valdai is the city in which it is located. Secondly, Helios-44m-4 has nothing to do with numbering depending on the resolution - this is the name of the modification.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

      • 10111

Nevertheless, it is desirable to clarify that the numbering, depending on the resolution, concerns only 3 lenses: 44m-5, 44m-6 and 44m-7. All figures in the remaining models in no way reflect any optical characteristics. Since I have already seen more than once that Helios 44-2 is the worst and therefore has a number 2. Many people refer to these reviews when they are right, it would be good to dispel myths and guesses :)

        • Alexander

Can I link to the source of this information?

  • Artem

    Much better than my 44-2

    • Caric

      With what?
Maybe someone has examples of the same pictures from a similar lens, only made by matrices with different resolutions. (for example, 6 MP and 16)
I would like to know if there is a noticeable drop in sharpness or what should generally get worse.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

The best, in my opinion, 44M and 44M-6, there was an opportunity to choose any of the line everything is in perfect condition - M-6 left. It is interesting, but Seven turned out to be the worst, I think there is still a huge run-up in the quality of glass of each serial, and storage is not an unimportant thing.

  • Artem

I had Helios 44-2, I remade it for infinity on Nikon. Using everything on the D5100 was fine, but at the full frame the mirror began to touch, I almost sat there when I found it. :( I sold it with macro rings.

    • anonym

and sat for a long time?

    • Andrei

and on the full frame - what model of the camera?

  • fierce Anonymous

Good lens, if possible I will get. Thank you for the review)

  • Alexander

The bokeh of Helios is unique. I bought Sigma 1: 4, a good lens, but for the soul I take Helios and shoot….

  • Vladimir

Arkady, tell me: is this lens compatible with the D80?
And how can he prove himself in this bunch?

  • Ivan

I have quite a few different manual optics, but still most often I shoot exactly 44m-4)) I love it. Can take really beautiful pictures. The only thing a little upsetting is the short grip, which is not always useful. Well, the family name for almost all helices is a tight focusing ring. The rest is quite usable glass. I recommend it for beginners in order to understand the basic principles of photography (fortunately, glass is quite cheap).

  • Gene jb

There is 44m-4, but I use nut 44-2, since it is better.

    • Novel

      And what exactly?

  • Gene jb

As for the focusing ring - disassemble, remove the old grease, grease with a new one and it will fly.

  • Oleg

I have Helios 44-2. I redid it to infinity, used it a couple of times on the D3100, but it is inconvenient there - I only put it off manually, postponed it.
Then I bought a 7100 and tried it a week ago. And I was impressed - the excellent color also gives quite decent sharpness - and this is on the 24 megapixel crop matrix. In terms of color in the sun, I like it even better than my native 50 / 1,8G.
In general, if a successful specimen, it is quite possible to recommend it.
Here is an example - I did not touch the color, only the contrast / shadows were slightly corrected https://www.flickr.com/photos/110930090@N03/13702277445/sizes/o/

  • Meticulous Reader

What kind of apparatus is in the first photo?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      My d700 with a booster.

  • Igor Crimea

please tell me .. I bought this lens .. I bought an adapter .. I put it on a Nikon 3200 .. I write there is no lens .. WHAT TO DO

    • Arkady Shapoval

Switch the camera to “M” mode.

  • Oleg

How can one achieve this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBDtt8n0O5k did iris control work?

  • anonym

I bought it in addition as a nice addition to the Pentax-20 (fortunately there is a native “K” mount). The pictures are simply gorgeous. Now the standard lens (18-55) is gathering dust on the shelf ... Before that, Helios was reworking the 44th for Nikon. I liked it too. It is a pity that there are no H-mount Helios with aperture control. ... When reworking or installing an adapter, the diaphragm must be blocked (((

    • Bunn

PK version is no different from a screw model except for fasteners?

      • Rodion

        No.

  • anonym

    Except Helios-81N)))

  • anonym

But what about the objective autofocus ?, is it worth the power of the brother to the canon 60d, with the autofocus mechanism of the chi ni? Crazy.

  • anonym

Please tell me, is there no risk when using with the 5D Mark III to damage the mirror?

  • Jeanne

And where can I get it at a reasonable price?)

  • Alexander

Hello . Found Helios 44m-4 with a switch. sold together with a Zenit camera for only 200 UAH! Lens condition used !!!!!!!! visible traces of disassembly - Scratches on the front ring! is it worth taking? and please tell me the repair of Soviet optics in Kharkov.

    • Daniel

Renovation at the Fujifilm studio on the street. Poltava Shlyakh (entrance through the arch near the Bommer cinema). It is worth taking the lens, I took one myself today with Zenith for 200 UAH))). But mine has no traces of disassembly. The picture is class!

  • Igor

    I like to take portraits.
If you shoot with an aperture of 8-11, will the Helios have an advantage over the Canon EF-S 18-55mm?

    • Lynx

      no.
