The Tamron AF Aspherical 28-200mm 1: 3.8-5.6 71D is Tamron's very first 28-200mm 7.1x zoom lens, introduced back in 1992. In 1996 it was replaced by the 171D version. For example, the first such super-zoom in Nikon appeared only in 1998 - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6Dand Canon in 2000 - Canon EF 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6.

This review presents a version of the lens for Sony / Minolta cameras, as indicated by the letter 'M' in the 71D lens modelM... I used a lens with a Sony α SLT-A55V camera, which 16MP proved to be overwhelming for the 'old man'.

Tamron 71D is light enough. The sample from my review has a slight backlash in the sections of the lens trunk. The focusing ring and focusing ring are rubberized. The focusing ring is very narrow and, when the focal length is changed, it 'leaves' with the trunk. I found it more convenient to focus manually by directly rotating the front of the lens rather than using the focus ring.

Surprisingly, the autofocus speed was quite fast, especially at 28mm. Focusing speed at 200mm focal length is noticeably slower than at 28mm. The lens does not have its own focusing motor, so there is a lot of noise when focusing with the camera's motor. When focusing, the front lens rotates and moves forward. Focus ring rotates 90 degrees. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate (the rear lens moves like a pump). While working, I did not experience any focus errors.

A serious drawback of the Tamron 71D is the very large MDF, which is as much as 2.1 meters. In order to somehow mitigate this drawback, in those days it was possible to purchase a special lens - Tamron close-up Adapter Lens for 28-200mm / F3.8-5.6 A9FB, which was installed in the hood slots and allowed the lens to focus from 2.1 to 1 meters. There was also the A9 lens, which was screwed directly in place of the light filter and fulfilled the same role. Indeed, using a lens with such an MDF for a number of tasks seemed quite difficult to me.

The diaphragm consists of 6 blades and closes to F/22@28mm and F/36@200mm. The diameter of the front filter is large - 72 mm. There are no useful marks on the lens (except for the focal length). EGF on Sony APS-C cameras will be 42-300mm. It's a pity, but the 28mm focal length on Sony APS-C cameras does not always give a wide enough angle of view, especially when shooting indoors.

As for the image quality, everything is very bad here. Very weak sharpness, even at closed apertures, as well as the strongest chromatic aberration. But the lens tolerates backlight quite well (there are examples in the archive with source codes).

Apparently, the designers decided to compensate for the small number of lines with a contrast height. What is called a "flaw". There seems to be sharpness, but it seems not ...

And there they just compared the optical characteristics of it and lenses with similar properties. Maybe it's “more suitable” for film than for matrices? I don't know, but I worked for it and was pleased with the quality of the photo (until I drowned it on an expedition).
