Sony has taken the unique step of replacing its line of SLR cameras with SLT cameras. In the summer of 2010, Sony introduced the first two SLT cameras, the Sony Alpha 55 and Sony Sony Alpha 33.

Unlike conventional CZK cameras, SLT cameras have a translucent mirror that does not pop during shooting. With the introduction of new technologies, it became possible to enhance certain functions and capabilities of such cameras. So Sony Alpha 55 became the first cropped camera, which was able to accelerate to 10 frames per second, before that only very expensive SLR cameras such as Canon 1D Mark III, Canon 1D Mark IV, could reach this speed. Nikon D3 и Nikon D3s.

Also, the technology of the translucent mirror greatly influenced the quality of video shooting, now it has become possible to use fast phase focusing during video recording. Conventional SLR cameras have a serious problem in the face of slow auto focus when shooting video. Only recently Canon 70D I was able to implement a more or less functional technology Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which allows you to shoot video with normal autofocus.

Another feature, compared with conventional CZK, in SLT cameras was the lack of JVI (optical viewfinder), it is used to replace it EVI (electronic viewfinder). If increasing the speed of burst shooting and improving focus during shooting video are undoubtedly huge achievements, then the transition from JVI on EVI is a moot point.

Personally, I don’t like the Sony Alpha 55v because of EVI, the reason for this is:

  • slowing down image output, especially when the camera automatically turns on EVI, after you bring the camera to your face. Fractions of a second EVI stays dark. This is very unnerving. Using the menu, you can make the EVI be constantly on, which eliminates the lack of braking. Using the Finder / LCD button (viewfinder / display), you can display the image either on the EVI or on the main camera display.
  • if you use the function of showing pictures after shooting, then sometimes the EVI just freezes for a few seconds. At this time, you just miss the moments during the shooting, because you do not see what you are shooting.
  • EVI remains dark for at least 1 second after turning on the camera, again you have to lose potential images.
  • when sighting in low-light conditions, the picture in the EVI slows down, as if using the slowdown effect. This is most likely due to the use of a high ISO and a long excerpts at sight. Also, all the digital noise is visible, which also makes you nervous.
  • When the eye rotates through different parts of the frame, multi-colored (red, green and blue) stripes become visible, which resemble interference in old TVs.

Most of these EVI flaws relate specifically to the Sony Alpha 55v model. Of course, EVI also has advantages, but this is the topic of a separate article.

The camera supports auto metering exposure with manual lenses, and for accurate and quick focusing, a 7.5- or 15-fold increase in any area during sighting very well helps.

Other aspects of the Sony Alpha 55v are a very good and functional camera. I would like to note the 3-inch rotary display with 921.000 points, HDR function, panorama function, image stabilization system and built-in GPS. GPS function adds in EXIF images of the coordinates of the shooting location, which is very convenient when viewing materials at home on a computer. Most network services can correctly extract GPS data and EXIF, which allows you to automatically set the location of the captured objects when publishing a photo on the Internet. By the way, the Sony Alpha 55v and Sony Alpha 55 models differ in the presence / absence of the GPS function. It's funny, but on the body of both cameras the inscription is exactly the same - 'a55'.

Sony Alpha 55v uses a 16 MP sensor that allows you to take 4912 x 3264 pixel images and use ISO 100-12.800. Likely on the basis of Other Sony cameras were built with this sensor - a35, a37, a57, a580, NEX-5N, NEX-5R, NEX-F3, NEX-C3, NEX-6. It's no secret that some manufacturers also use Sony matrices in their products. Therefore, there is a suspicion that the Pentax K-01 cameras are built on the basis of the same sensor, Pentax K-5, Pentax K-5 II, Pentax K-30, Pentax K-500, Pentax K-50, Nikon D7000 и Nikon D5100... However, due to different modifications of the sensors themselves and different processing of the original signal, the images from these cameras may differ. Nevertheless, I think that the matrix created by Sony turned out to be very popular and cameras are still being produced on its basis.

Shooting at 10 fps is possible only in a special mode, which is selected on the main command dial. In this mode, you cannot control all shooting parameters - in particular, you cannot set the shutter speed, and the aperture can only be controlled in the AF-S or M focusing mode. exposure. If you use focus mode AF-C, then shooting will always be carried out at the maximum available aperture value.

The camera does not show the number of frames that remained until the frame buffer was full. When I was shooting using a Transcend SDHC 32GB class 10 card, before the camera started to slow down, I could get about 17 pictures in RAW format (Sony ARW) and 30 pictures in JPEG format (aspect ratio 3: 2, L: 16M high quality).

15 focus points are responsible for focusing, 3 of which are cross-shaped. Most likely, the exact same focusing system is used in the Sony a57, a58, a33, a35, a37, a580, a560 and a65. The camera has a useful feature for recognizing and focusing on faces, using the focus point closest to the face. The speed and accuracy of focusing is highly dependent on the lens used. Still, it’s very nice to use focus on phase sensors while Live View is on :)

Sony Alpha SLT A55V is a good hobby SLT camera. An excellent choice for those who want fast burst shooting and convenience when recording video :). Nowadays, the A55V is considered an outdated camera and it is difficult to find it in stores; it was replaced by the Sony A57.

Cool review on a cool camera. Its price is now lower than the Nikon d5100, but its rate of fire, coupled with a decent video makes you think when choosing a camera. If there are no lenses from other companies in stock, then Alpha will be a great first camera. Personally, she is my first candidate for a purchase from Sony's cameras. Unfortunately, in the city where I live, such cameras are rarely sold, and often at overpriced prices. Therefore, while it is necessary to be content with Nikon and Canon.

    • AM

I would advise you to pay attention to newer models. In particular, if we consider only the initial price segment, then the best of Sony is Sony a57. She was able to absorb all the best that was before the release of the highly controversial a58. If the question of the video doesn't bother you too much, then something from Pentax from the same price category would be an excellent choice. (do not forget - a high speed of shooting is not often needed, and those who are fond of shooting video are likely to look in the direction of the follow-focus)

  • vnm

Why is the built-in puff so unnaturally arched in the photo?

    • Novel

That is not normal, she is standing. See the second photo from above.

    • Sergei

At puff there is a kind of suspension, it flies out with a roar. Labeling it annoyed, then I smeared some damper fluid there, now it's normal. On the A580, the built-in puff also clangs. Aunt Sony’s quality and materials are now rather mediocre ((

  • Dmitriy

As the owner of the a37, which is worse from 55 and 57 in rate of fire and some "goodies", I can say that the cameras in the line are really good. Particularly pleasing is the large fleet of good old Minolta optics, which has very good lenses and is especially pleased with its price. This is probably one of the essential stones in the direction of the NEX line (although it has its own adapter, and new lenses are coming out). When choosing a camera for me, the a37 definitely beat Canon and Nikon in its price range. True, a translucent mirror has an obvious disadvantage, confirmed by practice: with the same matrix with some NEXs, in low light conditions, quality is lost, due to the loss of about 30% of the luminous flux. Let's see what time will tell regarding hybrid autofocus in the latest Sony mirrorless cameras. They talk about them very well: the advantage of phase detection autofocus, but without a mirror, and the 179 points themselves in the a6000.

  • Denis

"When you rotate the eye over different parts of the frame, colored (red, green and blue) stripes become visible, which resemble the noise in old televisions." they appear to have applied color sequential output like on DLP projectors with a rotating filter. Those. the display shows only one color at a time.

  • Anatoly

In the office, the introduction of a translucent mirror into the cameras was officially recognized as a dead end decision, which probably is, the EVI is also a children's toy for enthusiastic son-breeders with their love for the SONY nameplate

    • AM

No, you're wrong. SLT is not a dead end technology, it's just that Sony was the first to figure out completely abandoning the mirror in all its lines of cameras, and SLT was an intermediate step and a very progressive solution. You are also wrong about EVI - apart from SONY cameras, technology is also used by other manufacturers and is very successful.

      • Denis

It's a dead end. For there is no point in developing it - we have already learned to place phase detection autofocus sensors directly on the matrix, and there is no point in putting a mirror that eats up a decent part of the light.

        • Cd ripper

sensors on the matrix only have a common name with classic sensors.
in all other respects, this is a miserable semblance of the type of right hand.

        • AM

You are only confirming what I said above. Once again, for those in an armored car - Sony, if not the first to understand, then the first to begin to move towards the complete rejection of the mirror - first there was SLT technology, then a complete rejection. As for the sensors on the matrix, from experience I can say that they are still really far from a separate AF module (compared with NEX5R). Regarding EVI, for me personally, there are two disadvantages - power consumption (which can be solved over time) and the second fundamental - you cannot crop if the camera is turned off, but this is not fatal either.

      • Ruslan

“Sony was the first to figure out how to completely eliminate the mirror in all of its camera lines, and the SLT was an intermediate step and a very progressive solution.”

What kind of nonsense? People have already used rangefinder (mirrorless) cameras in the past century.
And what now, and what about 15 years ago (if we take the era of digital cameras) any soap dish is a mirrorless camera. Displaying an image on the screen in live view (or in EVI), so that it really was LIVE (without delay), rests on the power of the processor. Now the processors have become powerful enough to “on the fly” process a picture from a large matrix and display it on the screen or in EVI “without delay”, and thus manufacturers of professional cameras have the opportunity to make professional digital mirrorless cameras (rangefinder cameras in essence) ...

PPZ - this was Sony's experiment, which was not crowned with some grandiose breakthrough success, since the quality of the final picture does not match either classic DSLRs or modern mirrorless cameras with APS-C or FF sensors.

    • Denis

EVI has essentially two drawbacks - picture lag and power consumption. Otherwise, there are some advantages - shooting in the dark (increasing brightness), increasing the focusing area (working with manual optics), information content (you can display anything), instant preview of the result (I think many forgot to remove the DSLR from manual mode and ruined the frames, especially if the display off), etc.

      • Anatoly

The most important characteristic is the resolution of EVI which wants to be the best, but technology does not allow it yet, and it is unlikely to allow it in the near future, therefore the JVI will be in demand for a long time to come.
And the rejection of the mirror and the reduction of the working distance is also a stick from two ends, as if the lenses are smaller with the same characteristics, and the mechanics are simpler and more reliable, which is good, but the DOF is already artistic, it’s not achieved with the same focal lengths, what's on the mirrors.

So, the breeders, EVI are also a children's toy for enthusiastic breeders with their love for the SONY nameplate

        • Denis

The pixel density is growing very quickly - even now the Full-HD screen fits into the phone and this is clearly not the limit. So the resolution of EVI is a matter of time, then in the future they will not be worse than frosted glass, there is no doubt, and given the possibility of increasing any image area, this is already a trump card compared to frosted glass.

        • AM

Anatolia: Do not carry nonsense! :) Firstly, the working distance indirectly affects the depth of field, secondly, the rejection of the mirror does not imply a decrease in the rear working distance (at least due to the preservation of existing lenses), and thirdly, EVI is used not only by Sony and not just in cameras.

          • anonym

PP generally does not affect the depth of field. It affects the physical size of optics and forces lens designers to dry their brains fairly when creating optics whose focal length is comparable to or less than that PP. Optics for DSLRs have always been more difficult to do than rangefinder with a short PP. By the way, if it's about Sony, then let's remember the wonderful zoom on Sony R1. Why is he like that? And because the PP could choose one in which it is possible to construct a zoom with minimal compromises.
By viewfinder. Is there a mirror viewfinder on a crop with the same visible field as this one on Sony, the same brightness and the same field of view? Aha! Why was it so important to screw a fast lens onto the DSLR? Because focusing is possible only when the diaphragm is open, otherwise all these wedges, micro-rasters and so on stop working. And at diaphragms 4 and further, they are not visible at all and they only interfere with focusing. But put on Sonya even with aperture ratio of 6,3 - no difference. So this is not a toy, not a toy. But the shutter cannot be kept closed. This is yes. This is problem.

            • anonym

Oh, one more thing. The protruding eyepiece is very good. Although you can’t crawl on the display :))

      • Sergei

Yes, it is. For the pros, this device is not suitable, I think, but for a leisurely shooting on the manual, I tried all the ancient glass on it.

    • Ingvard

And abandoned the mirror at all))), releasing the A7

  • Andrei

Please elucidate the following question: if a translucent mirror “eats up light”, how much is necessary under the same shooting conditions - with the same ISO and aperture, should the shutter speed be increased when compared to a conventional “SLR”?

    • Denis

Loss of light is about 30%, you need to increase the shutter speed by the same amount.

      • Leonid

Light losses on SLT cameras are small - 5-10%, no more. The fact is that all matrices are produced with a protective layer - an infrared filter, which just takes 1/3 of the light. Therefore, the developers have reduced the protective layer and part of its function is performed by a translucent mirror. So that everything is thought out and justified. Some craftsmen removed the protective layer (thin plate) and received unique photographs. For example, girls began to see all the underwear and more.

    • anonym

1/3 of a stop, that is, a third of the aperture division. This is within the limits of the statistical error of the automation system itself, so let's forget about such a thing. Worse, this beam splitter is part of the optical system of the lens and participates in the creation of the image, unlike a camera with a true DSLR viewfinder. But experiments with a raised PPV and with PPZ showed that the difference is imperceptible. Well, the fact that the matrix in these devices is constantly open, and not closed by the first shutter curtain, as in SLR cameras, is one of the important disadvantages both with regard to the protection of the matrix, and with respect to the “drain” of electrons, general interference, that is. Switching the shutter to the mechanical shutter mode partially solves the problem, but does not increase the protection of the matrix. In general, you will stretch your Head, the tail will get bogged down. But the camera is very good in its own way.

I apologize but it seems to me that everything is already compensated there and is 100 for example on the Nikon sensor, it's 130 on the same sensor standing on the sony and on the Sony camera itself it will be displayed 100

Hello, now there is an Alpha a-37, there are two glasses for it, a fifty dollars at 1.8, and 18-135, I have repeatedly noted that the pictures are noisy, I even conducted mini tests at home by eye, compared them with my brother’s canon, and on both the glasses turned out to be much noisier than on the canon, and I have a question for experts, is the matrix itself weak, or how did I read somewhere that in a bad light they all make noise (I did a photo shoot, and noticed that in a good light there is almost no noise ) or is it only 37, but let's say 57 will be better?

    • Jeka

Yes, a weak matrix, I have Alpha 55 pictures are very good, 37 seems to have a NEX matrix, a57 with 55 has a new matrix

    • anonym

At a37 ISO 1600, the noise is not visible even on the monitor. Night shooting with A3 printing, noise is not visible. There is no talk about ISO 100 at all. There and in ARW on the monitor, the silence is absolute. I do not understand…

      • anonym

By the way, it was precisely by noise that I preferred the a37 matrix to the new a58 matrix.

  • anonym

I will also add to the piggy bank the advantages of a series of these cameras from the "aunt". By attaching a manual lens, you can focus on the working aperture. Here you put 22, and the viewfinder is the same brightness as on the deuce. Only in the shadows can slight noises appear. Therefore, it is very easy to track the depth of field and aperture by the picture, and not at random.
In addition, the focus shift is automatically taken into account when using the Triplet derivatives - Zonnars (Jupiters 3,8,9), Tessaras (Industars, for example, Industar-61). And the Planars, Helios, that is to say, have a groove, although not so noticeable, but if by and large, then it is visible. This phenomenon is well known to portrait painters who worked with long-focus optics on formats. In the small format, the phenomenon also did not go anywhere. So often there is much more sense from EVI than from a closed shutter of cameras with OVI, where focusing is possible only with an open aperture, especially manual.

  • Sergei

I’ll add from myself. I saved up nicknames for six months for D7000 nicknames, but almost at the last moment I found out that it’s problematic to put optics on the zenith of which I have a lot to put on Nikon, I have to cut it. Then I took the A580 from Sonya. A580 is not a D7000 kanesh, but it also draws well. One delivered-ovi small and dark, manually och inconveniently induced. Caught a year ago on the announcement of the A55, this, but in excellent condition, for 9000 rubles. Then I took it and do not regret it. The electronic viewfinder for the manual turned out to be very good. The viewfinder is large and bright, very informative. Focusing is convenient even in low light conditions. The camera is compact, I carry it in my bag almost all the time. The display is actually not a 3-inch, noticeably narrower than on the A580, the color displays are not entirely correct. The battery in the A55 is small, about 500 frames, not more than the A580, in which I clicked 1780 frames. The electronic viewfinder probably consumes too. I did not notice the fact that a translucent mirror absorbs part of the light, in any case, it’s not exactly 30 percent as they say everywhere, the matrices of A55 and A580 are the same, I didn’t notice a special difference.

  • Zombotron

The durable and lightweight magnesium alloy body of the new flagship A77 is complemented by comprehensive protection against dust and moisture penetration, all critical points of the control buttons, memory card slots and the battery compartment are covered with rubberized covers. Sony representatives traditionally do not position Alpha cameras as professional reportage solutions of the universal “unsinkable” class, but the A77 model rightfully can claim to be a device for a wide range of external working conditions.

How many thousand frames of guarantee for a soni a55v?

    • Sergei

The dog knows how much it is designed. The shutter is in cm. In mine, over a hundred ago, it passed somewhere a year ago, but it does not die in any way. The display really got loose for 7 years.

And will the Minoltov lenses give autofocus on these cameras?

Does it make sense to swap A35 for A55? Will the photos be better? The 35 has such a disadvantage as decent noise. Soon to shoot a wedding with friends and I'm in thought - change the awl for soap and go like this.

    • Ruslan

It has. I had an a35 as my second camera, I did not like it, maybe the quality of the photos with a55 is the same for them, but the a55 has much wider functionality.

  • Vladimir

Or take the NEX-5 with a whale lens ..

  • Ruslan

This is a great camera, reliable. I’ve been using it for 8 years. It makes good pictures, especially if you can use raw on lightroom and other programs. I also rent weddings on him. Of course, good lenses are needed. The whale can be removed immediately.

  • Sergey.

Long chose what to buy as the first DSLR. For soapboxes terrified of quality. Before that, only in childhood he filmed Zeniths and Kievs. Consider a new passion had to start.
EVI is very pleased that in reality you usually see the final result. Only with the built-in flash I had a problem recently, for some reason the camera incorrectly selected the exposure to the flash. I usually shoot in aperture priority.
In general, I only use EVI, it’s better at detailing, especially on a sunny day you don’t miss the focus with manual focus. In addition, all the necessary data, exposure and menu settings are displayed in evi.
The rate of fire is highly dependent on light, by the way. Well, he will not do 10 frames / sec if the shutter speed is 1/5 sec.
SLT-55 took from Ibei for $ 300 with delivery, in a practically new appearance. The owner did not indicate the number of shutter releases, but after the purchase I found out that there are almost 4000 of them.
Two cetaceans, 18-55 and 75-300, came with the camera. The quality of the picture from the big one was not good, but the small backlash has large designs. I bought 50-55 whales for 200 dollars, from which some portraits began to be obtained.
Ibey took cheaply 28 / 2.8. 50 / 1.8. 35-105 / 3,5-4,5. 70-210 / 4. from the minolta. Everyone is in excellent condition, the picture is good, but they do not differ in any sharpness. There is still a thought for 300 dollars to take APO 100-400 for a photohunt.
Whale lenses are lightweight, but only 55-200 can be reliably removed from them.
Minoltovsky 35-105 I came across by the way some kind of soap, I need to get rid.
There was a problem buying flash. For modern flashes, an adapter is needed, I chose this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pixel-TF-336-Hot-Shoe-Converter-normal-for-Sony-Camera-Adapter-PC-Sync-socket/173533370948?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
The outbreak, after long struggles and breaking, was chosen by Godox 860-2S.
There is a problem. There is no autofocus backlight in the SLT-55; the built-in flash does this if it is raised. The focus highlight in the flashes, it seems, works only on 77-99 SLTs. I don’t know how the puff will work, it’s going now from Ibei.
Regarding the battery indicator, there are also complaints. Sometimes it shows a complete discharge, but you can go do a hundred frames. It reminded me of a Canon soap dish.
I would also like to buy an eyecup, rubber, because I always use the viewfinder. But, in ibei there is only plastic for 30 (!!!) dollars, which is not necessary.
Here many write terrified of the delay in EVI. Doesn't bother me at all, I'm fine. I set the automatic inclusion of Evi (when you look into it) because you don't want to plant a battery for him. Yes. when the camera is turned on, it sometimes turns on with a delay of a second, I don't see this as a problem. Regarding digital noise in the viewfinder at twilight ... Hmm ... funny you, in an ordinary mirror you won't see anything at all in such twilight.
A joke that is still incomprehensible to me, in poor lighting conditions, in aperture priority mode, the camera not only shows a bright beautiful picture in the viewfinder, but also makes the pictures brighter than the reality.
It is also important to mention that in standard settings the picture is greatly embellished in colors. Makes of old faded parquet, for example, brightly colored. But this is for fans of photoshopping. I did not like. I zaminusil in the color settings so that the color rendition was natural.
    Workers up to 3200.
And also the matrix stabilization was very pleased / not pleased. With hands, with a lens without a stub, you can shoot up to 1/5 of a second! Of course, this will not work on the big sums, but the stabilization work is very clearly visible.
Minus the stabilizer in fast overheating during video shooting and the noisy operation of the stabilizer. The first limits the duration of a single roller to 5 or 7 minutes. (For example, on a soap box, I took pictures for half an hour easily). The second trouble is that the noise of the stub climbs into the built-in microphone (almost like a zoom engine). There is a microphone output. I started a guitar into it from the mixing console, shooting a video, but nothing really good happened. I don’t know about the microphones, but the overload from the remote control was palpable.
The video was also spoiled by a strong sound compression built into the camera.
Another minus that I knew about when buying, there is no exposure setting in the video.
By the way, in our stores there is a SLT-58 from 18-55 it costs $ 500. But, as I understand it, it is not only more expensive, but worse.
Therefore, I am happy as an elephant.

  • Sergey.

ps / AVCHD video. I still do not understand what the problem is. It seems like a class 10 memory card. But when shooting video about once a minute, the final recording slows down for a second or two. I rarely shoot videos, I need to try other media somehow.

  • Victor

In my opinion and experience, one of the most important parameters, or even the most important, is the write speed to the memory card after a series. There is little point in 20 raw frames in a row, if then a minute is unloaded onto the card and the camera is inoperative. What can you shoot in series like that?
Photos on this parameter differ in both heaven and earth. But testers and authors of wonderful reviews are united and do not differ in their ignoring such a parameter.
They can occasionally write that it all depends on the class of the memory card. Although in my experience, not much depends on the class. Some ancient Uz, for example, or old CZK could write a series on ancient cards endlessly, until the battery sits down or the card is full. And many “modern” ones shut up after a dozen shots ...
    Alas, only test yourself ...

Tell me, please, which battery handle is like it?

How fast is GPS detection in this camera? For example, with a camera Samsung had to stand up to 10 minutes before GPS found satellites.

I stopped at a7p2, but it’s a pity to carry it everywhere with me. I picked up an old familiar a55v for cheap on Avito and tried it on a 70-400g2 fairy tale. g series. I was pleased with the beer can, I was, until I compared it. Sonya definitely improved the Minolta lenses ... What I put in + SLT technology is that it protects the translucent mirror from dust. and it protects well - change lenses and rejoice ... of course there is a Z9 from nikon with a shutter over the matrix, but, alas, I didn’t get into the Kalashny row. canons and nikons, then I am silent, otherwise the fans will beat
