Sigma 35mm 1:1.4 DG A HSM is suitable for full-frame cameras (designation 'DG') and is available for Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Sony A, Sony E, Sigma, Leica L systems. This review presents a modification for Nikon cameras. On full-frame cameras, 35 mm focal length is convenient to use for a very wide range of tasks. On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 52,5mm. For Nikon DX cameras, Sigma has two good alternatives: Sigma AF 30mm 1: 1.4 EX DC HSM  and Sigma 30mm 1: 1.4 DС Art HSM with a much lower price tag.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

All Art lenses are made exclusively in Japan, even all their accessories (caps, wardrobe trunks, etc.) are also made in Japan. Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 is a difficult lens, its optical scheme, consisting of 13 elements in 11 groups, has 2 aspherical elements, 4 SLD (low dispersion) elements and 1 FLD (low dispersion type 'F') element. The lens weighs almost 700 grams. The lens barrel is made from a new composite material that is less sensitive to temperature changes than conventional polycarbonate. The diameter of the front filter is 67 mm, I would not refuse the standard 77 mm, since I have several filters for this diameter.

In the hands of Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A feels like something holistic, well-made. True, the lens does not have dust or moisture protection, and the rubber on the focus ring consists of one tape stretched over the body, not glued to anything. Usually over time, the tape begins to peel off.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Focus speed is above average, but I can’t call it fast. The focusing time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is slightly longer than the non-motor inexpensive Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm 1: 2D... Personally, I expected a faster response from the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG. Since the lens has a built-in 'HSM' (Hyper Sonic Motor) ultrasonic focusing motor, the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG will work on all the central control rooms Nikon.

The lens does not have a full implementation of the manual focus priority mode. Permanent manual focus control is only available. when using the AF-S focus method, or in the manual focus mode :(. Most often I shoot in AF-C modeso when using the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM, a 'focus control fight' starts between me and the lens. This is a small thing, but rather unpleasant. With native lenses that support full mode M / A (manual focus priority auto mode), such troubles do not arise. Perhaps lens modifications for other systems such as Pentax, Canon, and Sigma lack such a flaw.

The lens has a 'AF / MF Focus' switch. The focusing ring is large and comfortable, and everything else is also rubberized. In the active position, the ring rotates 90 degrees, which is not very much, but given its large diameter, manual focusing is not difficult. The ring does not rotate during autofocus.

Internal focusing - the front lens remains stationary during focusing, but the rear lens moves. When using special light filters, for example polarizingshould not have any problems. MDF is 30 cm, which allows you to get maximum magnification when shooting close-up 1: 5.2. The lens uses a floating element system to correct image quality when focusing at close distances (the so-called Floating Focusing System, something similar to Nikon Close Range Correction).

Like most modern lenses, the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG transmits focus distance into the camera. In the Nikon lens designation system, Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG is a type lens FX, AF-S (SWM), G, IF, Aspherical, ED.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

In the kit, the lens comes with a case, covers and a plastic hood. The hood can be installed back-to-front, while losing access to the focus ring. The lens supports the use of a special USB docking station, which, together with special software, can reprogram the lens, which will allow you to adjust the automatic focus (back / front focus).

UPDATED

Examples of photos on the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A in the version for full-frame mirrorless cameras with E mount and camera sony a7 III shared photographer Vladimir Shishov. Many of his works can be seen. on his personal website or on the page in Instagram.

The lens distortion is almost invisible, which is very, very good. The f / 1.4 aperture is already fully functional - you can get a sharp image without any problems. At closed apertures, the lens sharp to madness... Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A creates an image with good contrast and has nice bokeh... Due to the diaphragm, with 9 rounded blades, the circles in the out-of-focus area do not look like 'nuts'. The lens tolerates side and backlight well, and chromatic aberration well adjusted. There are no complaints about image quality.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

My experience

In actual shooting conditions, I was rather disappointed by the many focusing misses and not the fastest focusing in general. Therefore, I am very surprised by the actual performance of the lens and the accolades I have seen on the web about fast and consistent focusing. Of course, with good lighting and unhurried tasks, there are no problems with focusing. Otherwise, the lens is very good. Although in many tests the optical properties of the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM outperform / can surpass those of native lenses, I would not rush to call it the 'best 35'.

Results

The Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM is an excellent lens, a really good alternative to the native 35 / 1.4 class lenses.

Interesting lens. Reading your tests, I learn a lot of useful things. Thanks for the tests.

  • Sergei

    Hello, Arkady.
There were problems with focusing on both the D80 and the D700?

    • Arkady Shapoval

These are not obvious problems, just a lot of mistakes. On d80 the same situation.

      • Basil

On D800, you need to do a correction from the body .. in general, grief is glass ..

Nikon 35D 2.0 small compact works confidently good colors….

  • Anton

Arkady, welcome. Does this glass have no stabilizer? As I understand it, this is a really creative lens for taking pictures. I really liked the sharpness! Thanks for another good article !!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no stabilizer, otherwise I would have written in a review. Yes, and similar stabilizer lenses in general are not needed.

  • Oleg

An interesting lens. Tell me, who knows, but how to get bokeh with circles, as in the photo with a mug

    • Arkady Shapoval

An open aperture, a small focusing distance, and in the background I hung a garland.

      • Oleg

I understood about the garland did not think

    • Dmitry

In the background, put a lot of crochets, it will turn out bokeh with circles.

  • Sergei

Maybe focusing errors due to the high sharpness of the lens, focus sensors “catch” in a wider range?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I think this is not so, but just the general specificity of the lens with a specific camera.

  • Eugene

It seems that the word ART in marking is dry marketing, the picture is high-quality but no more, it seems the price is only due to the ability to work in difficult conditions.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, as I pointed out in the review, there is only a modest letter “A” on the lens itself. As for marketing, of course, it is present here :)

  • Galina

good evening, Arkady! the question is off-topic :) but, you do not know what is the name of the priest in your photos, who conducted the sacrament of baptism most likely in the Holy Elias Church?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I often shoot there, but I don't know what the name is.

    • Ilya

Yes, this is Ilya’s baptism, and this is about Igor. Pleased with relatives :)

  • anonym

Does he have a badly polished rear lens ??? on the bokeh there are circles in the lines ... it looks like here https://radojuva.com.ua/2014/02/olympus-pen-e-p5/

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, there is a bit.

    • Sergei

Uneven light distribution on defocus circles from aspherical lenses, and not from poor grinding

      • Arkady Shapoval

Usually all sorts of "byaki" on the circles are associated with problems of the rear lens. Thanks for the information about aspherics.

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, hello !!! And on the d300, this Sigma or native 28 mm 1,8 is better (for wedding shooting) ?! As I understand it, they will be at about the same price. By the way, Nikon 35mm 1.8 FX came out.

    • NE

with 28 1.8 it is impossible to focus on the extreme points. You can read here - http://www.club-nikon.ru/forum/topic/80751-nikon-24-f18-vs-nikon-28-f18/ I have both Sigma 35 1.4 and Nikon 28 1.8, you cannot compare them, especially when after the first one you cling to the second camera or vice versa, everything becomes clear at once. Nikon 28 1.8 is complete mediocrity in my opinion. And the Sigma 35 1.4 is superb. If you want nikon, it is better to look towards 24 1.8

  • Sergei

Yes, the ART Sigma series is really cool! I bought myself Sigma 18-35 1.8, incredibly good glass !!

  • Jury

I used this lens on Nikon D7000. Disappointed - there are a lot of focusing misses even in good lighting conditions. Native Nikon 35mm 1.8 is much cheaper, but the quality of the images will be better.

    • Alexey

yes a good lens, sharp. only vignetting him :(

    • Sergei

native 35 1.8 - are you talking about the DH version?
so because it’s cheaper that 1.8 and under the crop.
and there are also a lot of AF misses - read the reviews and tests, for example, on the lenstype and photo ru.
and optically Nikon 35 DX 1.8 - junk - creepy HA, crazy distortion (as for a fix), etc.

  • Alexey

Yes, with focus, a true remark! I personally tried sigma 50 1.4, and sigma 18-50 2,8. I was very upset by the mistakes. Therefore, one did not buy, the second returned to the store a day later.

  • anonym

Appetizing bagels, I want to be bored. Samovar at VDNH, they celebrated Shrovetide, interesting. Well done, good live photos. Pencils are bright as always. How many interesting angles you can think of with pencils !!! The clock and photoappart look very organic.

  • Alexander

Arkady has very interesting reviews. What is remarkable is how he expresses his impressions, trying not to impose his opinion. Actually, he does not occupy authority. Now for this lens. On the Nikon D7100 it focuses perfectly even in semi-darkness, although the speed is really slow. The detailing even in the open (in the area of impact into the depth of field) is simply amazing. I'm already used to the fact that 1.4 \ 1.8 \ 2.0 is quite “soft” on almost all lenses, but here it is… The correction on the carcass had to be set to +5, while the accuracy is quite high. WONDERFUL glass! I would like to warn you about one more thing; - use it on such models as D800 (E), D600, D7100, D5300 so that the lens fully shows itself (in terms of picture detail). On the D80, for example, it will just be fast, expensive, heavy, the same as Nikkor 35 \ 1.8 and…. completely unnecessary. So, figuratively speaking, - each “Senka” needs OWN hat.

    • Igor

Alexander! I also have a D7100. I look towards this glass. Could you take a few photos from Sigma. It is possible to mail 3369393@gmail.com. Thank you.

    • Saddler

Please tell me, can I use it on the D3200?)

  • Ux

And I don’t like the tones from Sigma,
not alive any - cold, how not to twist them.

  • Sergei

    Arkady,
did you have the lens with the latest firmware?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      No idea.

  • Denis

And tell me, will this lens on the crop in the picture be an approximate analogue of 2/50 in full frame? I mean blurring the background.

  • Nikolai (sn797)

Arkady, hello! Thanks for the interesting review and wonderful photos! It is noteworthy, however, a little later, Dmitry Evtifeev published a review of the same glass!
    http://evtifeev.com/16743-obzor-sigma-35mm-1-1-4-dg-art-hsm.html
I am pleased to read both blogs and if I look at Dmitry, then after that I will definitely go to you or vice versa, first here and then there:) And now, such a coincidence! One lens (not taking into account the lens mount) and two different, interesting and unlike each other's review!

  • Sergei

Hello. Fluorite came to the masses! Yesterday I acquired this Sigma for the D5100 and for growth. Tested at home and on the street in cloudy weather without fanaticism. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of blueness as in Nikkor 35 / 1.8, which so irritated and spoiled the pictures, especially the color of the skin. Focusing through the viewfinder at close distances often failed, and if you immediately translate it into a live view, the motor moved everything into place. I never made a mistake on a liveview! The focusing speed is yes, it’s slower, but the lens block is also more massive, apparently, the developers specifically did this to reduce inertia so that there were no flights. And most importantly, the resolution exceeds the matrix of 16 megapixels on crop, observed the effect described by C. Rockwell in relation to the Zeiss 35mm f / 2.8 C Biogon T * ZM on http://www.kenrockwell.com/zeiss/zm/35mm-f28.htm
Here's the translation: “Little color flashes on branches are aliases that are triggered when the image formed about the sensor is so sharp in the light section, so small that it only hits a single pixel at a time. The system creates a funny color, alias, because by hitting only one CCD well, it is interpreted as being the color detected by that single well. The more colored flashes you see, the sharper the image. ”
One drawback is heavy and expensive.

PS Dmitry Evtifeev's review of this lens shows “chromatic aberrations” on branches, but as far as I understand, this is freezing in the out-of-focus zone! Correct if I'm wrong.

    • Sergiy

Did not try to flash a new version? Having read, he helped, but didn’t try it himself.

      • Sergei

For firmware, you need to buy a dock separately. Yes, and actually there is nothing to improve, except for the matrix on the camera!

  • Beegg

Interestingly, I have no misses on 5dm2. A very unexpected conclusion. On the native 35 1.4l there was more marriage than with sigma.

Don't flatter yourself, there were no comments, there was only one “commentary” :)

  • Sasha

I have this glass on the canon .. and all the rules 10 out of 10 hits the mark. It just really behaves differently with different carcasses. I know that on 5d mark3 this glass often needs to be adjusted on the docking station .. And with mark2 everything is fine.

  • Maria

oh, finally there was a review about this miracle. Soon I will be using it together with d90 for a year - no complaints at all! Misses? no, I have not heard)) excellent sharp pictures from 1.4 - I can't imagine how it could be otherwise! although not, the only negative: glare in the form of large greenish-gray balls skips at night!

  • anonym

on d610 behaves perfectly - the glass is super, 10 out of 10

  • Ivan

Marketing is understandable. Only marketing from Nikon and Canon costs us much more ... Judging by the picture in the open hole, all competitors smoke on the sidelines.
