Sigma 35mm 1:1.4 DG A HSM is suitable for full-frame cameras (designation 'DG') and is available for Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Sony A, Sony E, Sigma, Leica L systems. This review presents a modification for Nikon cameras. On full-frame cameras, 35 mm focal length is convenient to use for a very wide range of tasks. On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 52,5mm. For Nikon DX cameras, Sigma has two good alternatives: Sigma AF 30mm 1: 1.4 EX DC HSM  and Sigma 30mm 1: 1.4 DС Art HSM with a much lower price tag.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

All Art lenses are made exclusively in Japan, even all their accessories (caps, wardrobe trunks, etc.) are also made in Japan. Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 is a difficult lens, its optical scheme, consisting of 13 elements in 11 groups, has 2 aspherical elements, 4 SLD (low dispersion) elements and 1 FLD (low dispersion type 'F') element. The lens weighs almost 700 grams. The lens barrel is made from a new composite material that is less sensitive to temperature changes than conventional polycarbonate. The diameter of the front filter is 67 mm, I would not refuse the standard 77 mm, since I have several filters for this diameter.

In the hands of Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A feels like something holistic, well-made. True, the lens does not have dust or moisture protection, and the rubber on the focus ring consists of one tape stretched over the body, not glued to anything. Usually over time, the tape begins to peel off.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Focus speed is above average, but I can’t call it fast. The focusing time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is slightly longer than the non-motor inexpensive Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm 1: 2D... Personally, I expected a faster response from the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG. Since the lens has a built-in 'HSM' (Hyper Sonic Motor) ultrasonic focusing motor, the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG will work on all the central control rooms Nikon.

The lens does not have a full implementation of the manual focus priority mode. Permanent manual focus control is only available. when using the AF-S focus method, or in the manual focus mode :(. Most often I shoot in AF-C modeso when using the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM, a 'focus control fight' starts between me and the lens. This is a small thing, but rather unpleasant. With native lenses that support full mode M / A (manual focus priority auto mode), such troubles do not arise. Perhaps lens modifications for other systems such as Pentax, Canon, and Sigma lack such a flaw.

The lens has a 'AF / MF Focus' switch. The focusing ring is large and comfortable, and everything else is also rubberized. In the active position, the ring rotates 90 degrees, which is not very much, but given its large diameter, manual focusing is not difficult. The ring does not rotate during autofocus.

Internal focusing - the front lens remains stationary during focusing, but the rear lens moves. When using special light filters, for example polarizingshould not have any problems. MDF is 30 cm, which allows you to get maximum magnification when shooting close-up 1: 5.2. The lens uses a floating element system to correct image quality when focusing at close distances (the so-called Floating Focusing System, something similar to Nikon Close Range Correction).

Like most modern lenses, the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG transmits focus distance into the camera. In the Nikon lens designation system, Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG is a type lens FX, AF-S (SWM), G, IF, Aspherical, ED.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

In the kit, the lens comes with a case, covers and a plastic hood. The hood can be installed back-to-front, while losing access to the focus ring. The lens supports the use of a special USB docking station, which, together with special software, can reprogram the lens, which will allow you to adjust the automatic focus (back / front focus).

UPDATED

Examples of photos on the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A in the version for full-frame mirrorless cameras with E mount and camera sony a7 III shared photographer Vladimir Shishov. Many of his works can be seen. on his personal website or on the page in Instagram.

The lens distortion is almost invisible, which is very, very good. The f / 1.4 aperture is already fully functional - you can get a sharp image without any problems. At closed apertures, the lens sharp to madness... Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A creates an image with good contrast and has nice bokeh... Due to the diaphragm, with 9 rounded blades, the circles in the out-of-focus area do not look like 'nuts'. The lens tolerates side and backlight well, and chromatic aberration well adjusted. There are no complaints about image quality.

Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM

My experience

In actual shooting conditions, I was rather disappointed by the many focusing misses and not the fastest focusing in general. Therefore, I am very surprised by the actual performance of the lens and the accolades I have seen on the web about fast and consistent focusing. Of course, with good lighting and unhurried tasks, there are no problems with focusing. Otherwise, the lens is very good. Although in many tests the optical properties of the Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM outperform / can surpass those of native lenses, I would not rush to call it the 'best 35'.

Results

The Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM is an excellent lens, a really good alternative to the native 35 / 1.4 class lenses.

It was a shock when I realized that having adjusted the lens with the docking station under artificial lighting (photo studio, apartment with a flash), I get a complete failure in autofocus in natural light - I had to introduce an intra-camera autofocus accuracy correction of +20, then the sharpness became normal at street photography. This means that it is necessary to introduce a very noticeable AF correction depending on the lighting. I wrote a reminder on the hood. As a result, I adjusted the lens for the street, I will use it there more often, and for the studio and baptisms in the church, I will have to introduce the camera AF adjustment every time. I have a Nikon D610, it is possible that the lens is not friendly with this particular model, but it's hard to believe. So, alas, it is not a universal lens, so that without looking at it I screwed on the camera and went to shoot everything, we must remember about its tricks ... There is also an idea to adjust to average values between EO and IO, but then the sharpness is not ideal.

This is my comment from three years ago. And today I had an insight. I also sinned on focusing the Sigma 35 1.4 on Nikon D610 and D750 through the viewfinder. I tried to calibrate with the docking station, and introduced an intra-camera correction - continuous confusion and wobbling, focusing every other time, moreover, with artificial light somehow, then with natural light - just tears and soap. As a result, I rolled back the firmware to the factory firmware through the docking station and left this Sigma alone. And today it precipitated, when I discovered that this infection with my Nikons focuses through the LP during face recognition, just as quickly, clearly and sharply as Nikkors do not focus, and in addition in any light! And with point focusing, it is also quite worthy. Reset all the corrections, try to read the manual into Nikonov's focusing modes for LP, select the desired mode and try to shoot, it suddenly works. I set AF-F (face), aperture 2.8 - it turns out ok. I shot the doll for now, later on a real model I will shoot with focusing on the LP. Now I like the quality of the photos much more than those of Nikon + Nikkor. Here is such a shock. %)))))

I bought this charm from my hands a few years ago on the D7000, it is exhausted. The adjustment in the carcass helped a little, but there was no pleasure, although the picture is really very good, so fortunately I did not immediately sell it. I bought a station, there was also little use. It's time to update the carcass, took the D500, and probably in the very first pictures the whole city heard my joyful screech. But portraits of women are better not to take pictures, for such sharpness it is possible to row with a rolling pin. Plus, with the Sigma 50-150 with the stabilizer there were not frail problems on the long end, now everything is fair.

The entire line of Art is very good, the main drawback is their weight and size. I own Sigma 18-35mm 1: 1.8 DС HSM Art, its weight is just over 800 grams and its dimensions are not small. Honestly, I took it as a staffer on the Nikon D7100, but everywhere you go with it, you won’t especially take it.

    • Lydia

Vladimir, tell me are you satisfied with your sigma 18-35? I can not decide to take it 7100 camera

      • Alexey

Lydia, 18-35 years already with me 5. not removed from the carcass. True questanul with adjustment, but everything worked out. Rent a rental immediately or buy.

        • Sergei

Greetings. how do you like your sigma lens 18-35 1,8? I plan to buy. But there are a lot of contradictions regarding AF, especially through the viewfinder. I have a Nikon D5600

  • Kate

Who had the opportunity to compare the speed and “tenacity” of focusing sigma 35 1.4 and native Nikkor 35 1.4g? I have a d700 carcass and with dynamic shooting (running and flying kids))) sigma simply does not understand what to focus on and is terribly dull. The familiar d610 and in this bundle her sigma works very fast. On MK, the photographer suggested that this is due to the fact that the d700 has an outdated focusing system. But I don’t want to change the carcass for the sake of the lens, but changing the sigma to nikkor is quite, but does it make sense, will nikkor be faster? There is no possibility to conduct tests in my city, the lucky owners of Nikkor 35 1.4 are absent.

Katya, did you get an answer to your question? it interests me too)

Can you please tell me - maybe someone came across - does this lens (version for Kenon) work on EOS film carcasses (aperture and AF). thanks

  • Ivan

Arkady, hello. Yesterday I ran into a problem on this sigma. I decided to try on a lens on a Nikon D750 camera. Everything is focused well, I really wanted to buy it. But I tried to take a photo in live view, but he does not focus at all! As a result, I had to refuse the purchase. ((((
Have you encountered such a problem? Perhaps on Sigma 35mm you need to update the firmware through the dock?
Now I think I can consider Tamron 35mm 1.8 as an alternative. What say on this lens compared to sigma?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Third party lenses are always a risk. Maybe the native 35 / 1.8G FX?

    • Alexander

I had it on the D750. He suffered only a little more than 2 weeks, returned to the store. Even the docking station did not help, it was all exhausted. Now, in thought, how to replace your old Nikor 50d 1,8.

      • Savel2000

As an option, the new Tamron

    • Arseniy

He worked in a vibrant world, at 7100 a tamron of 17-50 vc was similarly stupid. Specific models lag, it makes sense to flash the camera / lens on the latest version of the software.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Always distrusted third party lenses. I bought it from a friend “for trial”. I am very pleased with the D800 lens. I can say that I use it wherever this focal length allows.
an aperture of 1.4 is just a fairy tale - night photos without a flash under street lamps are simply magnificent.
I think this lens is 100% worth the money

  • Yuri

From the "arts" it does not pull on anything. I will not explain, so as not to confuse users. And, to think, why on Nikon thirty-five from Sigma, when there is Nikkor 35 / 1.8ED? For 1.4 versus 1.8?

  • anonym

Good article, good comments. There was a question about buying 35mm. on the D610. I'll probably take Nikkor 35 / 1.8ED

    • Marina

Have you taken what you planned? Now I choose Sigma 1.4 or Nikon 1.8.

  • Yana

Good afternoon, I bought a lens and faced such a problem: with a camera flash, the lens gives back focus, you have to enter a correction of -16, but this is if the subject is at a distance of about 2 m, if it is farther or closer, then you will not get into focus. The lens was immediately aligned under the Nikon D750 camera, without a flash it works fine, apart from the focusing speed, and with a flash it’s just a disaster. Have not encountered such a problem, and what to do in this case?

  • Vladimir

Briefly, about my experience with sigma Art 1.4: I got it on the secondary market for the Nikon system. The first shots seemed to me with an undershoot of focus (back focus), adjusted fine focusing and everything seemed to be normal. But then I had several commercial shootings, and it turned out that there was no focus overflight and turned off the fine-tuning of the autofocus at all. Yes, at aperture 1.4 it was very difficult to get into sharpness for a very small depth of field, but at aperture 2, it calmly took away the children's day and everything was in focus and sharpness. About the picture and color: glass, as on me, gives a cool picture and a very “correct” color, which practically does not need to be drawn in the editor. About focusing: in the dark, indeed, it is not very confident to focus, not even very confidently (but this may also depend on the professionalism of the photographer), when. normal lighting there are no problems with focusing. In general, I liked the lens, both with the build quality and the image quality at the output.

  • Vladimir

Yes, and more: Nikon d600 camera. With the on-camera flash, there are no problems either.

  • Andrew Ch.

    I shot the graduation, my D750 + asked for 35 / 1,4 A.
Sharp with an open, I shot mostly at 1,8. There was no problem with focusing and adjustment, I put on and immediately shoot. Light, excellent color reproduction. Before he made a couple of shots on his 24-120 / 4. Although the color is good, it doesn’t have that whiteness (luminosity) and contrast as on Sigma 35 / 1,4 A. I shot it all evening without a flash, in the evening I focused normally. There were no problems with this instance of Sigma. In general, I was satisfied.

  • Alexander

Hello Arkady, are you preparing a review for the sigma 18-35 f1.8 art, it would be interesting to hear your opinion about this lens.

  • Anton

Hello, I wanted to ask, I am facing a choice of 35mm for Nikon, I need for Nikon d800, z6. I wanted to ask which option will be sharp and fast for weddings?

  • Denis

Good afternoon. I want to buy on Avito this sigma for Nikon D700, what should I pay attention to first of all? Who has experience using this bundle?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Pay attention to everything you can. From focus to appearance.

      • Snagen

Hello! I want to ask: If I have an ancient Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 D, is this Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM the best | A for close portraits. Thank you!

  • Jury

What can you say about the work of this lens on the Canon R mirrorless?

  • Dmitriy

Recently I went to the online store to buy Sigma 35 1.4 for my Nikon D7200. Taking a target with me and observing how the distance scale behaves in live view and in the viewfinder, I found the front focus. A +3 correction in the camera right in the store has already improved the situation. I felt relieved and I quietly bought it.

A couple of days later, already at home, I put the camera on a tripod and tested the AF accuracy at different distances. Up to 2 meters, edits from +6 to +10 are enough, at greater distances you need +13.

Having tested the distance of 13 m at +1, I found that here the distance scale in both AF modes remains at the same place, with a sharp picture of the target. As a result, I came to the conclusion that +13 is the optimum for everything and the sharpness at 1.4 is completely satisfied.

PS I also found out that my regular native Nikon 35 1.8 dx, which I had been using for 3 years, is sharp in phase only at a distance of up to 1 m, and then - soap. But with him and to mess around already reluctance.

  • Alexander

You cannot judge objectively about this lens when shooting with the ancient d700. It can only unfold on the 800th episode. Please reshoot

    • Jury

      Funny :)

  • Sergos

Shooting with an on-camera flash is actually kind of frivolous - firstly ... Secondly: how much fuss with DSLRs - the lens is not friendly with the camera, front-back focus ... it's time to switch to mirrorless cameras and it's most cost-effective to use Sony - excellent nexes, cheap on the secondary, with an adapter, excellent minolts and sonya lenses .. look with a sober look at how many years later Nikon and Canon switched to mirrorless cameras, which are not yet expensive, but very expensive ... it is clear that professionals cope with this fuss in the name of fast focus, optical viewfinder and the money invested in optics, but for us, mere mortals or advanced amateurs, why is this. Such an impression, judging by the comments, that there are only reporters and wedding attendants around. (well, and frivolous firms too). And in order to slowly (relatively) get high-quality photographs. From my own experience, I note that you need to take your own optics and learn how to squeeze the maximum out of it. (This, by the way, is also advised by Arkady, on whose website we are discussing.
