Review of Tamron SP AF LD 70-210mm 1: 2.8 67DN

This review presents the Tamron SP AF LD 70-210mm 1: 2.8 67DN lens. Letter 'N', at the end of the name, means that this is a lens for' Nikon 'cameras, for cameras of other systems, another letter is indicated after'67D'.

Tamron has a long history of high aperture telephoto zoom lenses. At the moment, she has the following models of high-aperture telephoto lenses of the 70 / 80-180 / 200 / 210mm F / 2.8 class:

  1. MODEL 30A: Tamron SP 80-200mm 1: 2.8 LD BBAR MC, manual lens, 1985-1992, Tamron Adaptall-2 interchangeable mount system
  2. MODEL 67D: Tamron SP AF LD 70-210mm 1: 2.8, 1992-2001, Nikon F, Canon EF
  3. MODEL A001: Tamron LD DI SP AF 70-200mm F/2.8 [IF] MACRO, 2008-2012, Nikon F, Canon EF, Sony A, Pentax K
  4. MODEL A009: Tamron USD DI SP 70-200mm F / 2.8 VC Ultrasonic Silent Drive, 2012-2017, Nikon F, Canon EF, Sony A, Japan or China
  5. MODEL A025: Tamron SP 70-200mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD G2, 2017 - present, Nikon F, Canon EF, China or Vietnam
  6. MODEL A056: Tamron 70-180mm F / 2.8 DiIII VXD Model A056, April 2020 - our time, Sony FE

The names are given according to the markings on the lens barrel. Separately, it is worth highlighting Tamron 35-150mm F / 2-2.8 Di III VXD Model A058, which partially works in the same range (70-150 / 2.8).

The Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 is a huge, heavy professional lens, and it is also quite rare, so I took many pictures of himself:

The instruction goes directly to three lenses. Tamron SP AF LD 70-210mm 1: 2.8 67D lens instructions in English can be downloaded and viewed here.

The Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 has a 'fair' 3x zoom, unlike similar lenses with focal lengths of 70-200mm or 80-200mm. Made in Japan, the body is mostly made of metal. The Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 has a non-detachable tripod socket that can freely rotate 360 degrees and is fixed in the desired position with a special clamp washer. The socket has two threads of different diameters for different tripod types. Two red markings can be found on the body, which, when compared with the red mark on the tripod mount clamp, make it possible to quickly rotate the lens to landscape or portrait position.

The zoom ring is huge. It is rubberized and rotates very smoothly. When changing the focal length, as well as when focusing, the rear lens remains stationary, which completely deprives the lens of the 'vacuum cleaner' effect.

But the focusing ring is very strange. At first glance, it is completely absent, but if you carefully 'feel' the lens, it turns out that the focusing ring is the narrowest, middle part of the lens. The focusing ring is also rubberized, but it is not very convenient to use it due to the fact that it is sandwiched between the convex (front and rear) parts of the lens. Personally, I found it more convenient to focus manually by rotating the front lens with the hood on it.

An interesting feature of Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 can be considered an additional metal clampthat extends from beneath the zoom ring and covers the focus ring. The instructions for the lens say that the collar prevents touching the focus ring when operating in automatic mode, in which the ring rotates using the focus motor.

Sample photo

The lens has a 'Full / Limit' focus limiter that can be switched with one light touch. In the 'Full' position, focusing is available from infinity to MDF of 1.5 meters. In the 'Limit' position, focusing is available either from 1.5 meters to 4 meters, or from 4 meters to infinity. When focusing, when reaching the extreme positions, the objective lenses knock perceptibly. In the 'Full' position, the focus ring rotates 90 degrees, due to the large diameter of the ring, focusing manually is easy.

In the 'Limit' position, the autofocus speed is high, in the 'Full' position, the time to focus from infinity to MDF significantly increases, but nevertheless, even in this position, the autofocus speed is sufficient for comfortable work. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the lens focuses, the speed is comparable to native Nikon AF 80-200mm 1: 2.8D ED MKIII.

On the body you can find a focusing distance scale in meters and feet, as well as infrared shift marks for 210, 100 and 70 mm. There is no focus mode switch on the lens, switching to manual focus mode and back is carried out using a switch on the camera. When focusing, the front lens rotates, and the lens trunk moves forward - this can be considered one of the most obvious disadvantages of the lens among its mechanical parts. Also, under the weight of the huge front lenses, the lens can spontaneously change the focusing distance (only if the camera is in manual focus mode).

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

The Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 aperture consists of 9 blades and covers the entire focal length range up to F / 36 (although a different limit is indicated on the lens - F / 32). Also the lens has aperture control ring (in the photo the ring is easy to recognize by a number of numbers: from F / 2.8 to F / 32). To control the value aperture of any modern TsKK Nikonneed to install ring aperture to F / 32 and fix it with a special button, which is located on the lens housing to the left of the numbers. If this is not done, the 'fEE' error will appear on the camera display. This ring is needed to control the aperture on some film cameras (described in more detail in the section Non-G Nikon Lenses).

For Nikon cameras, the lens is an analog FX, AF, Non-d the lens. Please note that Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 does not transmit focus distance values into the camera, which may give errors in exposure when shooting with flash in TTL auto modes. When using the lens on Nikon DX cameras EGF will be 105-315 mm :) When shooting handheld during daylight hours, there should be no problems, since a large aperture lens allows short excerpts at low ISO.

Such a monster weighs about 1400 grams and uses filters with a diameter of 77 mm. The Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 has a hood that can be worn backwards (as shown in the photo). On my 'large pixel' Nikon D700 the lens has good sharpness even at F / 2.8 over the entire range of focal lengths. If you slightly cover the diaphragm, then the sharpness increases markedly. That's just a pity, a fairly strong distortion is visible at 70 mm. The lens has a pronounced yellow-green color of the image, which is clearly visible in JVI, automatic white balance partly corrects this shortcoming. Of course, at open apertures, the Tamron 70-210 / 2.8 delivers significant chromatic aberration... In general, the picture from the lens is good.

  • Oleg

the diaphragm ring is located in the most inconvenient place you can imagine - right next to the mount

  • SHAH

On all non-G type lenses, the ring is near the lens mount ;-)

  • anonym

vivitar 70-210 in the picture is better although there the aperture is not constant

    • Alexander

The presence of a constant aperture is not a guarantee of a high-quality picture.

  • Dmitriy

I have a vivitar 70-210mm f / 2.8-4.0 (komine). It's just huge XA (((Conclusion: Take either high-quality modern zoom optics or an ancient fix. The zooms were terrible then!

  • Dmitriy

And how much can such a miracle cost today? ..

    • Vladimir

There is an announcement on Avito, a guy 15000 rubles. asks

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

The front lens is just huge!

  • Novel

"System specifies a different letter after '67D'."
    Did you mean "letter"?

  • Sergei

Arkady, you write - "The lens has a pronounced yellow-green color of the image, which is clearly visible in the OVI .."
That is, do you think that the lens does affect the color of the image sufficiently to make it noticeable by the eyes?
In general, I think the same, but when I expressed this point of view somewhere, I was immediately showered with stools. The easiest thing they advised me was to straighten my hands and read about the balance of the white. ;)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Of course it does, I don't think it's a fact. And a huge number of old lenses suffer from this shade (the color of bottle glass). The question of how to properly set up the BB with such a lens is a completely different question.

      • Sergei

        Thanks for clarifying.
I understand that "deviations" are minimal and the character of any lens can be corrected with white balance. But if the lens slightly “yellows”, doesn’t it mean that it has lower quality glasses or the optical design is worse than that of its “lighter” counterpart?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Aperture here does not play a role. Just a poorly made lens, or its circuit, or time forced the lens to change its initial parameters. Sometimes adjusting the BB with such lenses will not do anything good, or will give with a lot of dances with a tambourine.

          • Sergei

I didn't mean aperture ratio. For example, at the same settings, focal and aperture, I take a picture with the whale nikkor 18-55 and sigma 17-50. The shot from the second lens is slightly warmer in terms of WB. You can say "yellower". The kit lens is not bad on its own, but it can't be optically better than the $ 500 Sigma semi-pro.

            • Oleg

Sergey, the optics scheme is not affected here. Other factors are more affected, such as the correct operation of the brains of the camera and lens.

Arkady and how Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F / 2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro Nikon F will work on the D5100

    • Igor

It will only work in manual focus mode. Those. On the Nikon D5100, it will not autofocus.

  • Maksim

And how is it compared to the Nikkor 70-210 f4? Which is better in picture quality? Tell me please.

    • Jury

Tamron will be better. I have such a tamron and nikon 80-200 / 2.8 mk3, there was a nikon 70-210 / 4.0 which I sold. So this tamron is at the Nikon level of 80-200 mk3, both in terms of picture quality and speed.

  • Maksim

Good bright zoom. I have been using it for a couple of months in conjunction with D3. Autofocus is smart, on the open hole it's pretty sharp. Changes colors a bit. Backlight problems and strong HA at 2,8. The picture as a whole gives a pleasant one. There are no complaints regarding the assembly.
    Regarding Nikkor 70-210 f / 4:
I took both of these glasses at the same time, but I had to refuse Nikkor, since he had a jamb with enlightenment due to cleaning, which led to a significant loss of sharpness in the center of the frame. As a result, he left a tamron and decided not to chase a working Nikkor.

  • vvv

The lens exceeded all my expectations. In some respects, it turned out to be better than my 80-200: in particular, the problem with the back focus of the 80-200 at short distances, recognized by Nikon, is absent from Tamron. Turned out to be more accurate and faster autofocus (tested with D700 and D300s) - http://www.viewbug.com/photo/4451368 . In general, the glass is very successful. Too bad it's hard to find now.

    • vvv

As far as I know, this Tamron was the prototype for the creation of 80-200.

  • Zivert

And it seemed to me that the color goes to blue. Judging by the pictures, it’s getting cold.
I took it in conjunction with the Nikon D750. I do not regret it.
In the company of the old man, Nikon 28-70 / 2,8 gives full scope for work.
By the way, thanks, Arkady, for highly artistic reviews of old glasses. Thanks to them, I finally became convinced that real iron does not rust, unlike the current plastic dominance in the field of lenses.

    • Andrei

Do you have any problems with the focus point miss? I have with d300, well, from 30% of the marriage due to a miss autofocus ... though on a bright sunny day everything seems to be ok, but in cloudy weather you can not even get it

      • zivert

I got the same trouble when I tried it on a crop ...
Until the end, I did not understand this.

      • zivert

Focuses accurately only in Full mode on crop. In particular, I tried it on Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro. When you switch to Limit, the glass starts to dull and autofocus misses the mark. Although, this is probably due to the fact that the lens for FF “In the 'Limit' position, focusing is available either from 1.5 meters to 4 meters, or from 4 meters to infinity,” writes Arkady. Then on the crop it will be from 2,25 to 6 and from 6 to infinity. Somewhere on the border, he begins to stir up trouble. No problem at Full.

        • Andrei

hmm, thanks, I need to check

Good evening, photo lovers. Recently I bought such a lens for Sony A, this review prompted me to buy, unlike the one described, in the Sony version there is no aperture control ring, only from the camera. I had Sony 55-200 before it, Minolta Bank 70 -210, Large
Bank 75-300, for a long time doubted having such a set in the correctness of the purchase, because Tamron is priced
dragged the whole set. But the glass exceeded all my expectations, to say that it removes well
to say nothing, it removes better than all the zooms that I had before in my hands (and this
there were not only Sony and Minolta), the constant aperture gives a huge scope for maneuver, it was sharp with an open one, compared with the Sonar 135 3.5 black in sharpness in the open, and the Pentacon 135 2.8 (I have both) is not inferior, it lost only to the Yu-37 but in my specimen there is crazy sharpness, in color it is much better than all the listed zooms and fixes.
with open but without loss of sharpness, autofocus works fine with it, even in low light it practically doesn’t use it, but its main strength is shooting in low light picture
excellent. The main disadvantage is weight, heavy, I solved this problem by screwing the handle from the photo gun to the bracket, now my hands are longer and the weight is less. I sold my kit and
I’m not looking for anything else.

    • Victor

What kind of handle screwed? Can I have a photo? The weight is really huge. Hands get terribly tired.

  • Victor

Thank you very much for the review of this lens and for your blog as a whole. I took this glass for myself, and did not regret a single gram. This cost me 12000 glass on Avito. It is definitely worth its money, it fulfills the tasks assigned to it in full. I am an amateur photographer and do not bother with insignificant in my opinion HA. For such a price, you will not find a better glass. I didn’t notice any misses on autofocus, although I rent concerts for the old D90 on him. Only the stabilizer is lacking, but this is not important. And I didn’t check his killing ability on my own experience, when they dropped him on the floor with a pokey above human height. The back cover just shattered into dust, and this piece of metal and glass is nothing. Perfectly works.

  • Livendariser

I got such a lens, after six months of use I can say - a gorgeous thing !!! He has some solid pluses and one small minus. Yellow gives off to green, due to enlightenment, this is noticeable in the shadows and front of yellow. It is extremely easy to treat in post-processing.
But the picture is gorgeous, sharp from 2.8, the front lens does not spin, does not change dimensions, autofocus is very fast. It's just an awesome lens, my best buy!

    • Livendariser

And also a small minus - chromatics, sometimes very noticeable, but less often not. Edited by handles post-processing. No distortion or vignette

  • Michael

Good day. Tell me about the account
    Tamron 70-210mm F / 4 Di VC USD (Model A034)
if there is no review, then in a nutshell it can be bad and good.
    Regards, M.

  • Vyacheslav

I sell such a Tamron under canon ef! Ukraine. Email: simonsaykill@gmail.com

  • Igor

In general, I bought one for Nikon. What can I say a glass of my money say so $ 200 worth. About the focus, the focus on his level of Nikon whale lenses, I even seemed to quickly. I liked the color bright and saturated. Contrast and sharpness in no particular order revealed any problems. There is no vignette on the full frame either on the long or on the short end. Now about the sad chromatic aberration here is an ambush, they are. A lot of them. They constantly get out where they should and should not. Well, he clicks when focusing just frighteningly.

  • Igor

In general, I got this miracle. Immediately on the minuses, glare is noticeable in the stadium even with a hood. Well, not even glare, but lighting effects. Chromatic aberration is. Noisy autofocus with clicks in extreme positions. Well, the lack of a built-in focus motor will upset camera owners without a motor.
Now the pros. Autofocus is smart enough and not very blurry, the picture is sharp.
As a result, I would rather recommend it for purchase. For 12-15 tyrov, he simply has no analogues

  • TT

Should the metal clamp that covers the focus ring move on it's own? I bought a copy and the clamp moves under the influence of gravity and there is no way of fixing tight anyhow

    • B. R. P.

No, it shouldn't. It appears to be broken.
