Canon EOS 40D review

The Canon EOS 40D camera was introduced in the summer of 2007 and, at the time of this writing, can be considered obsolete. Nevertheless, the 40D is an excellent device that can in our 'gigapixel'time to delight good picture.

Example photo on camera

Example photo on camera. Helios and colorful pencils.

By today's standards, the 40D has a modest 10 MP matrix, while it takes pictures of 3888 X 2592 (total 10.077.696 pixels). In fact, the same matrix is used on the camera. Canon 400D (without Live View and ISO H 3200 mode) and on Canon 1000D (without ISO H 3200 mode). 40D became the first Canon APS-C camera, which was able to use Live View (20Da do not take into account, because it is designed for specific work).

Sample photo

The camera refers to Live View as 'Live Viewfinder'. Live View turns on with a slight delay, but the display does not freeze during operation. The inclusion of Live View can be programmed to the central button of the control wheel, you can also perform a 5- or 10-fold increase in the image area, and the area itself can be selected using the joystick. But the 40D has one problem when working with Live View - in this mode, automatic contrast focusing does not work (for focusing, the mirror must be lowered, and the Live View mode is off). Full 'normal' focusing with Live View is new to Canon 450D.

The 40D uses a very meager ISO range from 100 to 1600 units, which can be expanded to ISO 3200 (labeled ISO H on the camera). There is a function of automatic ISO, although it uses a range of values from 100 to 800 units, it does not work in manual control mode exposure and has no settings. If auto ISO has been enabled, the ISO always becomes 400 when switching to 'M' mode. The noise level at high ISO values is not good :(

Also in the 40D, a 9-point focusing system first appeared, all of which were cruciform. Subsequently, the same system was used in models Canon 50D и 60D, and as the basis for phase focusing in 650D и 700D. When working with 40D, I did not observe any problems with focusing.

40D is the first Canon camera to use a 3-inch display, although it has only 230.000 pixels, but 3-inches give a completely different feeling from viewing the shot material than 2.5 inches from its predecessors.

A very strong point of the Canon 40D is burst shooting. The maximum shooting speed is already 6.5 frames per second... Faster than 40D at one time filmed only professional 'ones' - 1D, 1D Mark II (1D Mark II N). It's very funny that the successor to the 40D is Canon 50D and especially 60D shoot slower. Even new Canon 70D, according to the speed of burst shooting, is practically no different from the old 40D.

Deserves special attention frame buffer. If you disable all the functions that improve the image programmatically, then it is placed in the buffer:

  • 14 RAW + JPEG L shots
  • 75 JPEG L shots (unheard of)
  • 17 RAW shots
  • 20 sRAW shots (2,5 MP)

When using fast memory cards, the series length is significantly longer frame buffer... If you enable the functions: 'Priority of lights',' Shimmer. for lasts. shutter speed ',' Shumopod. at high ISO ',' Highlights priority ', then, for any selected image quality, only 6 images are placed in the buffer, after which the camera starts to slow down.

It is also nice that 40D uses 14-bit color depth in RAW files, the files themselves weigh 8-15 MB.

Canon EOS 40D weighty, sits well in the hand. The body is made of magnesium alloy. With the optional monochrome display you can always access the basic functions. Unlike Canon 30D, in the new model, some of the buttons located first to the left of the display have moved under the display.

  • Minimum excerpt The shutter is 1/8000 s.
  • Studio flash sync connector, video output, USB, remote control connector.
  • The camera uses large and fast memory cards CF, I used a 32 GB card without any problems.
  • System for cleaning the matrix from dust.

Despite its age, the Canon EOS 40D remains a highly functional camera that can handle a myriad of photo tasks without requiring high ISOs. At one time, the 'forty' was just an amazing camera.

  • Dmitriy

    Greetings!
At one time I wanted to buy this camera :) I read the forums a lot and for a long time, asked, asked my friends for a hobby, looked and studied the photos taken with this camera, but ... three times I was “taken away” from the acquisition of this device) And now, finally until I felt it from a workmate - I understood to the end that it was not for nothing that I had it. Yes, the camera was very relevant at the time, but it was mainly used as a “reportage” due to its high rate of fire. I tested it in terms of portrait photography and there were some disappointments ... In comparison with my old 10D, this camera has an incomprehensible BB and what is most unpleasant, in my opinion, is how it draws shadows.
    I enclose an example:
    shot with 40D http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6310/29768433.d/0_6d176_47173302_XXXL.jpg
    10D shot http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6212/29768433.d/0_6d16a_8a7565cd_XXXL.jpg
All settings of the devices by default, except for exposure. 50mm lens f = 4 zenitar.

    • Dmitriy

Hmm, for me the shot with the EOS 40D is better worked out: look at the neck, at the temples, the whole face is more lively - voluminous, despite the fact that there is an obvious focusing error - the eyes and eyelashes are "dull".

    • Bkrg

For me, there is no difference. At the first, you just missed a bit with focus.

    • anonym

Very cool 40 works, I like the pictures more from him than from 10

  • Oleg

solid brick. but do not take it, the quality is worse than on my Panasonic GF3

    • anonym

It remains for you to see a photo with exif to see how this fairly simple mirrorless with crop factor 3.0 in quality tears the old magpie.

      • Oleg

as folk wisdom says, anonymous is worse pid *** sa. not to mention the "crop factor 3.0"

        • Dmitriy

And is this your worthy answer? Wonderful, however.

          • Oleg

yours is written with a small letter. pull-up pants, intellectual with crop 3

            • Dmitriy

I'm still waiting for photos from exif. And all sorts of excuses like "little", "intellectual" have nothing to do with the declared case - do they?

            • Dmitriy

By the way, yes - Panasonic GF3 has a crop factor of 2.0, not 3.0 - I saw the wrong sizes.

            • Yuriy75

With a small one it is written when there are a plurality of letters, and I think the camera is worthy of attention in the presence of straight hands, especially since the price is very interesting now.

            • Alexey

The pronouns You and Your are written with a capital (capital) letter as a form of polite appeal to one person (i.e. to someone specifically). This is known to people who studied at school. This rule is not mandatory (especially in our time), but literate people, not necessarily intellectuals, do not forget it.

              • anonym

and even in 2016 we remember

        • Alexey

          Bravo!!!!

    • anonym

      Waiting for exif

      • anon deanon bullying

        well, how is it

        • sasha

Yes, he was shut up by his lovers of forty. Now he sits somewhere in the bushes with his panas exif hiding :-)

          • Arthur

            ))))))))

  • Ivan

Finally, I waited for a review of 40s,
thanks for the review, it was interesting your opinion
a good camera, I switched to it after 450 matches, in principle I do not regret it, although some functions are lacking, but still I liked the camera, albeit an old one, but it gives very good pictures.

  • Alexander

the word "your", as far as I know, can be written with both capital and small letters. Here the degree of respect for the person to whom you are addressing plays a role. Strongly respect (or pretend to respect) - write with great respect, this also applies to official papers. And in everyday correspondence - it is possible with a small letter, IMHO.

    • anonym

no, nothing to do with respect. always capitalized

  • Anonymous 1

Ay-yay-yay, young people! No need to be so rude to each other !!! You cannot know the truth like that! And I will tell Oleg: the concept of quality is very subjective. Someone sees moldy cheese in front of them, and someone sees moldy cheese. And both are right. But in different ways. Your Panasonic is very good, but the picture gives a different perception than the Kenon of this model. The difference is not at the level of mathematical calculations, but at the level of human psychology.

  • Alexey

I am the owner of the same device - only positive impressions. Live View is a very useful thing, even without the “correct” autofocus. You just need to buy a good tripod - and the possibilities increase dramatically (manual focusing is still more accurate, the screen allows). Considering the price (and I got the carcass for 10 rubles with a run of only 000 frames) it will be problematic to find a competitor ...
I like the color rendition, although the shades of red on my monitor look a bit flat, but I suspect this is more likely my monitor.

    • Vladimir

As for the monitor, I completely agree with you. He himself was convinced that on budget monitors the photos look different, but not at all like on paper from a photo lab. Well, for the price, of course, the choice is good, if it does not exceed 8-10 thousand for a used carcass (with an acceptable mileage)

  • Edgar

Amendment. The first camera with lw was 1d mkIII. True, it is more topronically made (it is impossible to enable phase autofocus with the af-on button). He owned both cameras, and I will say that the 40d is more than a successful camera. She ran away from me about 70.000 (once at a speed I fell on her, but she couldn’t do anything) and never failed

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Ivan

By the way, yes, price, 40s are now quite affordable on the used market, you can buy them at the price of an advanced soap dish or ultrasound, 40s are slowly being sold.

  • Michael

I want to share a useful thing with the happy owners of any EOS cameras with those who shoot in RAW.
Once I came across such a thing as Technicolor CineStyle which is a color profile built into the camera menu, developed jointly by Technicolor and CANON.
All the charm lies in the fact that this color profile increases the dynamic range of shades in shadows and highlights, which undoubtedly gives a huge plus for subsequent image processing.
I want to add that this is not firmware, does not make any changes to the camera software and does not harm the camera in any way. Good luck in your work!

  • Gene jb

The firmware would be better…. I have 400d, but for some reason it is 12 bits, although the sensor is the same. To be honest, the matrix is poor. She's missing a lot. In 40, they tried to draw out a semi-profile from this matrix, but it seems to me that it did not work out despite the 14 bits. But in general, both the 400d and 40d are about the same cameras and, of course, they are very good for their time, whoever said that. And I can tell Oleg one thing all modern fotiki are cheaper. This also applies to Canon, and your pornographic (a company that has not produced cameras before) is no exception. In general, I am wary of companies that suddenly began to produce equipment unusual for them. The photo is Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Kenon, Kodak, Pentax. Everything else is from the evil one. Although I do not argue, there are also successful solutions.

  • Natalia

Thank you so much for the review!
I sold my Nikon d3100, I chose for a long time, I wanted to take the d90 or d7100 initially, but then after talking with the owners of these cameras, I decided to try out Kenon, I bought a 40d with a changed shutter.
This camera has never disappointed me, even if it’s outdated, but it’s a pleasure to shoot it! Colors give more natural (in my opinion) than Nikon D3100, D90.
A huge plus rate of fire, when shooting animals it is very important.

  • anonym

Great idea with pencils !!! Very colorful !!! Arkady, well done)

  • Oleg

I changed my 500D to 50D. The argument was focus fine tuning (a very useful thing). A similar (or the same) sensor, but there are pluses:
    - you hold in your hands and feel the "thing"
    - Interchangeable focusing screens are very cool feature
    - fast memory card,
    - convenient size
    - 9 cross sensors.
and only one drawback - no video (and even then without alternative firmware)

Arkady, do, plz, a review of 50D - the last semi-professional HHD

  • Novel

I am also the owner of the forty. I have a device for about a year, for the entire time of service it causes some positive emotions. Before him there was 400ka, although they are somewhat similar and inside, but these are completely different cameras, ranging from the convenience of holding in your hands to the focus. Thank you very much Arkady for your articles, as always everything is clear, detailed and accessible. And also forum users write reviews, because the truth is born in a dispute)))

  • Novel

By the way, the question on technicolor cinestyle can someone tell me this profile only applies to video shooting or for photos too?

  • Dima

Help me choose a Nikon d80 or Canon 40d. Interested in how much d80 loses by noise ???

    • Pastor

Dima, I don't have 40d, but I have 50d, which is similar to 40d in many respects. I've even heard people who have tried both devices claim that the 40d is not as noisy thanks to the noticeably larger pixel (just 10MP for the same sensor size). So, at 50d I calmly shoot and ISO 1600 and hardly worry about noise - they almost never happen at this value. I also have d80. So, d80 makes noise even at ISO 800, and, in my opinion, more than 50d by 1600. At 50d, in a bad scenario, you can even take a picture at 3200, but at d80, this threshold just becomes 800. In general, up to 400 d80 is good. Therefore, precisely in terms of noise at high ISO, d80 clearly loses. 40d, like 50d, is also larger and more convenient in size, the rate of fire is twice as high and there is a life view. But the d80 has a good old ssd matrix, which in portrait studio photography leaves no chances for any other modern cameras (in my opinion).

  • Ruslan

I had 400d, then 550d. Then I changed 550d to 40d - there were too many pixels in 550d, for me this is an excess. I am very pleased with the device. The picture quality is good. In 400d there was a function of increasing ISO up to 3000 (using 400plus firmware), but the built-in H mode (ISO 3200) in 40d gives a noticeably better picture, despite the fact that the matrices in these two devices are considered the same.

Judging by the tests, the DXOMark 40d gives a slightly higher image quality than the 50d, yes, possibly because of the larger pixel size.

  • Oleg

And if you use RAW with a lower resolution, then will the difference between 40D and 50D be visible?

  • Andrei

Tell me, I have a Canon EOS 650D, I want myself an advanced DSLR, but it’s extremely limited in my budget, I’m looking at 40D, does this make sense?

    • Oleg

It seems to me that there is no point. It is rather a step back :)
+ 40D - pentaprism, magnesium alloy body, compact flash, minimum shutter speed 1/8000
+ 650D - high-resolution display and rotary touch-screen, video, new focusing system, support for STM, 63 metering zones, exposure bracketing up to 5 stops

    • anonym

To work with aperture and manual optics, I think it makes sense.

      • Oleg

If the vision is good, then you can. On such a camera, the viewfinder is good, but not so much as to accurately focus with telephoto lenses due to the small depth of field.

  • Alexander

    Spasbo Arcadia, for the review

  • Dmitriy

Should I change the 1100D to this unit? Liveview, video, auto modes are of little interest. What are the differences in the matrices, DD, viewfinder. I photograph a lot on the Soviet manulniki Helios and Jupiter 9, using, like portrait painters, I want to continue to move in this direction.

    • Michael

Definitely worth it, I did just that, the 1100D changed to 40D and my joy knew no bounds. The first thing that caught my eye was a huge, bright viewfinder, comfortable to grip, just like an extension of the arm, quite weighty, but this is a huge plus when using heavy lenses. In general, there are a lot of pleasant little things, so I have never regretted =)

      • Vadim

I join. Swapped out my Canon 1200D for a 40D. The 1200D seemed like a toy to me after I just picked up a forty. I am an amateur, I do not need video on a DSLR, Live view too. The 40D is no worse in terms of noise level, I already estimated it with a 24mm 2.8 stm lens. The first thing I felt: I didn't want to part with this camera, and the second - I appreciated how useful the LCD is! I love urban photography, and the 40D gives you more opportunities to catch a sudden shot as the responsiveness is instant!
Quite by accident, a carcass for 8300 rubles turned up, with a mileage of only 11 thousand in perfect condition ... and I could not resist! Now I have 2 DSLRs, but in a few days I got so used to the "forty" that I begin to understand that I probably won't need the 1200D anymore.

  • Dmitriy

And, yes, 5D is significantly more expensive, but I also really want to, I understand that the difference in the format of the matrix with all the consequences, but is there a big difference in the quality of the picture in terms of portraiture?

  • Eugene

I have been using my second fortieth for two years.
A very nice camera, you quickly get used to high rate of fire, and live view helped a lot when working with manual optics.
Took her a Canon EF 35-105 mm f / 3.5-4.5 for its price it shoots very well.
I also noticed that, for example, Jupiter 9 does not open at 40d (details only on the shoulder portrait), but it produces impressive photos in full frame.

  • Peter

Hello, I apologize in advance for the possibly stupid question whether the 40d will have fast synchronization, say with SPEEDLITE 580EX I (the shutter speed is 1/8000, but nothing is said about the function itself), and if not, can I achieve fast synchronization using a Youngnuo type radio synchronizer ?

  • anonym

Arkady, thank you very much for your sincerity in interpreting the topic of 40d. You helped me cross the line in favor of 40D. thanks,
