Review Yashica Lens ML 28mm 1: 2.8

Yashica Lens ML 28mm 1: 2.8 is a good fast wide-angle for Contax / Yashica film cameras. The focusing of the lens is manual only. I used a Yashica Lens ML 28mm 1: 2.8 on-camera for this review. Canon EOS-1DS using the C / Y-Canon EOS adapter.

The 'ML' in the lens name stands for 'Multi Layer', i.e. multi-layer coating, later the 'ML' prefix on Yashica lenses was replaced with the usual 'MC'. There are several versions of Yashica ML 28 / 2.8:

  1. The first is an optical design: 8 elements in 7 groups.
  2. The second is an optical design: 7 elements in 6 groups.
  3. The third is the 'c' version, it can be easily distinguished by a 49 mm filter and a 23 cm MDF. Optical design 5/5.

The same lens also exists in earlier versions of 'DSB', that is, with a single layer coating, an overview can be found here.

Yashica Lens ML 28mm 1: 2.8 when focusing on MDF

The lens is made in Japan, serial number A1236536 and judging by the number, this is a version with an 8/7 scheme. The assembly is excellent, outwardly it somewhat resembles modern Zeiss, only without the rubberized diaphragm ring.

The focus ring is rubberized and rotates approximately 200-220 degrees. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk is lengthened by half a centimeter. When focusing, all lens elements move. MDF is 30 cm. The lens uses a 6-blade diaphragm, with closed diaphragms it is easy to get “nuts” in bokeh and 6 ray stars... The aperture closes down to f / 16, in my opinion, as for a wide-angle, the aperture range of f / 2.8-f / 16 is too small.

Original photos available at this link  - 290 MB, RAW files from full camera Canon EOS-1DS in TIF format, 30 photos, when shooting in half of the photos, the Hoya 52mm Skylight (1B) Japan filter was used.

The lens creates a sharp image at F / 2.8 in the center of the frame at any aperture value. But around the edges and corners on F / 2.8, everything is not so good. If you close the aperture to F / 8, then excellent sharpness occurs throughout the field of the frame. Of course, there is vignetting and distortion, the latter is not very strong (see the example of a photograph with rails themselves, etc.). The lens holds lateral light well and is slightly worse than the backlight, creating small sunbeams in the pictures.

Can Yashica Lens be bet on Nikon?

    • Yaroslav

You can put on Nikon, but through the adapter there will be no infinity. To have infinity, you need to change the mount. I can make a bayonet and there is such an extra lens - write in a personal.

Arkady, I beg your pardon, I wrote a big comment here about 4 hours ago - did you moderate it? Something is wrong?

I wrote it again, it does not work - maybe due to the fact that the comments contain links to my photos with this lens?

Well, then I will write again.
The lens, in my opinion, is simply magnificent - in search of "my" 28-ki, I tried almost all conceivable options, from Aishnykh Nikkor to Zeiss distagon and, as a result, settled on this Yashik. Since in my free time I am engaged in converting old optics for Nikon, I immediately included it in the list of highly recommended lenses and everyone with whom I converted them is very happy.
This lens was produced in the same period of time and at the same factory as the Kontaksov Zeiss and, I think, this lens was not without the participation of Zeiss engineers. The copy, which I use myself, even has Zeiss enlightenment T * - occasionally on ML-kah it comes across. But also a serial lens, this lens is not much, but better than the “big brother” Carl Zeiss T * Distagon 2.8 / 28mm. Comparison http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/yaroslav-photo/album/375444/
Well, just how he takes off http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/yaroslav-photo/album/383656/

Yashica ML at wide angles, in general a very successful series, but fifty dollars do not shine with anything special - ordinary planars, solid and nothing more. It is a pity that 85mm is not provided for in the ML line - with Yashikov quality it would be an excellent and budgetary portrait lens, such as Rolleinar MC 2.8 / 85mm. Only here Rolley, in order to put on a modern camera, needs to be cut almost in half, and Yashik is altered without interfering with his native hardware, by replacing the bayonet.

So I hope, Arkady, if you use this lens longer, the review will end like this: “Excellent lens, I recommend it”. After all, with more than good optical properties, it has something that most lenses cannot boast of - a chic, plastic "pattern"

Please tell me, how do the versions of this lens differ from each other ?, ML or another?
Now I see on sale at OLH there is only one lens of this kind, but not ML ...
Will they be different in the picture?

  • Andy

Great lens! I confirm. It is especially good at night shooting and in cloudy weather.

Please tell me who in Ukraine can do the job of changing lenses
    Yashica mount to Nikon mount.
And after the change, will the diaphragm "jump"?
    Thank you.

    Good afternoon!
I am interested in the opinion of which lens gives a sharper and more contrasting card for landscape photography, the choice is between Olympus M.Zuiko 28 / 3,5 and Yashica Lens ML 28 / 2,8, or, as an option, three times more expensive than Olympus M.Zuiko 24/2,8, eight. There is no way to compare myself ... I will buy according to recommendations and opinions from the Internet.
Arkady, you tried both lenses, what do you recommend for crop first of all for landscape photography? I really need advice. Thanks!

    Good morning friends!
Loved your site! I watch it with great interest, especially information on manual lenses.
    That is the question!
I have a canon 5dmii, I chose this one for myself as a landscape lens! Yashica Lens ML 28mm 1: 2.8
What are his modifications of the mounts? Just what is in your picture? For canon, as I understand it, which will stand on my carcass without any problems? Will it work, and will it be sharp at infinity? Please help with the choice, I'm going to choose it on ebay, I would like to know with accuracy that I ordered what I need.

I liked the lens. Even more.
It gets into sharpness easily, it's nice to focus. It is controlled normally.
Last year I walked with him. You can see what happened.

    Canon 5D Camera.
Do not judge strictly, I am a simple amateur photographer.

Thanks for the tip, but the figure doesn't tell me much. It would be nice to know how it behaves on film, what color is fresh and expired, and whether it is significantly inferior to Papa Carlo, because it was created when there were no digital cameras yet. Is it justified to buy it for shooting on film? now its price is significantly higher than that of the others from the Japanese five.

    • Andrei

      behaves very well on film.
