Review Auto Tamron 1: 2.5 f = 105mm (Adapt-A-Matic)

This review presents the lens of the Adapt-A-Matic system, which made it possible to mount it on different cameras using various interchangeable rear parts of the lens (shank). There is a Tamron 105 / 2.5 lens in a different design, they should not be confused. The Adapt-A-Matic version was produced from about 1969 to 1973. For a system, 4 years is very little, in 1973 Tamron began producing lenses with the improved Adaptall system.

Also, Adapt-A-Matic lenses could be found in the version without an interchangeable shank - only for one specific bayonet mount. Tamron is known to have assembled Adapt-A-Matic lenses using a special brown glue seal for better screw retention (source) All Adapt-A-Matic lenses did not have multi-light. Due to the continuous development of the Adapt-A-Matic system, you can see slightly different lenses from this series.

Auto Tamron 1: 2.5 f = 105mm with a Nikon F mount, which can be considered similar to Nikon's, got to my review NON AI lens, but with some features: to install Tamron 105 / 2.5 on older Nikon cameras that are not compatible with PRE AI lenses, you do not need to modify anything, however, at the same time, the lens does not transmit the aperture value to the camera, and, moreover, on the copy from the review, the aperture does not automatically close when the shutter is released. As a result, I shot with Tamron 105 / 2.5 only on the open aperture.

The Tamron 105 / 2.5 has an 'M-A' aperture mode switch, but the ring does not lock at the 'M' position and more serves as a diaphragm repeater. At first I was glad that the automatic aperture closing malfunction could be circumvented using a repeater, but it turned out that when shooting with the aperture closed and the repeater clamped down, the aperture gets stuck, it locks at F / 22 and you need to take another shot for the aperture to open.

Tamron 105 / 2.5 is made in Japan, the assembly is excellent, only the clamp with a screw clamp, near the camera mount, hurts the eye. The lens has a small built-in metal hood, which is of little help when shooting with light sources in the frame. The lens itself is quite "chubby", but the filter diameter is only 52mm.

The focusing ring is rubberized and rotates 240 degrees, while the front lens only extends forward and does not rotate. MDF is 1.2 meters. All necessary indicators can be found on the lens barrel: depth of field, focusing distance, F value, IR mark. The Tamron 105 / 2.5 uses a 9-blade diaphragm that forms “circular saws”At values from F / 2.8 to F / 8.

It’s difficult for me to judge the quality of the image, since I took pictures only at F / 2.5. Who cares, the originals of the pictures can download from this link (206 MB, RAW, 12 bit, conventional compression).

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700. On camera JPEG L (compression 'optimum quality'), without processing. Functions: Control vignetting, ADL, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds, noise reduction at high ISO - were off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - position 5 out of 10. The size of the photos has been reduced to 3 MP. Find out how to take photographs with old lenses here.
