Review Nissin Di700

Flash Nissin Di700 is available in two versions - for Canon cameras and for Nikon cameras. This review presents a flash for the NIkon CDC.

Di700 - inexpensive Chinese external flash, able to work in automatic TTL mode.

  • The flash is large, only a little smaller in height than the original Nikon SB-910. It seems to be assembled not bad, but, as practice shows, in Chinese outbreaks after a certain time of use, certain jambs may appear. Nissin Di700 has metal foot for mounting.
  • The flash is fixed to the camera by means of a rotating clamping disk. I can’t stand this method of fastening, it is much more uncomfortable with the usual latch on native Nikon flashes. You don’t always know where to turn the disk lock; it often gets stuck in bad weather, especially in the cold, with your bare hands there is no desire at all to unscrew this disk to remove the flash from the stand or from the camera.
  • The Nissin Di700 supports high-speed sync, with the Nissin Di700 you can shoot at any shutter speed, even for 1/8000 s.
  • Flash support automatic remote control using the system Nikon CLS... The Nissin Di700 can be easily ignited with the Master Flash. The only problem is that with the Nissin Di700 you cannot select a synchronization channel. When I took test shots using any of the available groups, the flash worked on any of the channels set on the camera. This is a trifle, but nevertheless, such a disadvantage can get in the way when, for example, you shoot with another photographer in the same place.
  • The flash head rotates 180 degrees to the left and 180 degrees to the right, so the horizontal coverage angle is 360 degrees, which is very, very convenient.
  • It's nice that the flash has a zoom of 24-200m, this is a very good indicator for an inexpensive product. Attention: the flash does not have the ability to set the zoom manually, the flash either adjusts the zoom to the focal length of the lens automatically, or simply sets it to 35mm. When you take out the diffuser card, the zoom automatically becomes 24 mm.
  • The flash has a reflector card and a diffuser card.
  • The case has PC-sync and a mini-jack for synchronization with studio flashes. There is also a connector for using battery packs.
  • The flash uses 4 AA batteries to operate. They come out of the flash along with the compartment lid, as shown in the picture in the examples below.
  • The flash has an additional backlight for the autofocus system. The backlight is based on two LEDs, in pitch darkness it helps with focusing, although I personally barely notice it through the viewfinder.
  • There are very useful modes SD, SF for remote ignition of flashes based on a light trap. Of course, unlike the automatic remote mode, the power in such modes is set only manually.
  • It is stated that the guide number is 48 m, but how the Chinese define this parameter remains a mystery. Therefore, I do not recommend paying too much attention to numbers. As far as reality is concerned, the Di700 should have enough power for any task.
  • In TTL mode, exposure compensation is set in 1/2 stop increments. Usually, more advanced flashes allow you to use a step of 1/3 stop.

The flash menu is very simple and pleasant, based on LEDs. The flash has very few buttons - SET, the power button, the test pulse button and the wheel. In addition to the presence of a power correction, I still did not find how the 'A' mode differs from the 'TTL' mode, maybe someone will tell me in the comments.

My experience

I am always skeptical of non-native outbreaks. On the one hand, for a small price you can buy a very good and functional device, but on the other hand, nothing is better native outbreaks I have not met yet. In the Nissin Di700, I don’t like that the flash squeaks strongly when recharging, there is no indication of batteries, there is no possibility to set manual zoom, which is important when shooting with remote control. The battery compartment, too, is not the most convenient.

Feedback, as the owner of this outbreak:

This is my first TTL flash, so I have only puppy delight from her).
I took it from the calculation of fast and convenient work in TTL mode on the camera. She copes with this perfectly. Making exposure compensation with the dial is quick and easy - that's the point. The flash has a special feature: the exposure compensation indication is set on the flash + 2 / -2. If more correction is needed, then this is done already from the camera as a correction for the pulse power on the lightning button, which raises the built-in flash. Then an additional + 1 / -3 steps appear.

On racks outside the camera I use purely in manual mode, and as an additional to the YN560-III. An umbrella for clearance or a softbox does not need a zoom.

Zoom The fact that they cannot be controlled is annoying morally, but in fact - there is always a way out. I do not worry and use a manual flash when I need it.

    Total:
When choosing a light for myself, I clearly understood what I needed. I chose 2 non-native flashes for the price of one native. I feel so comfortable. I chose a kit for learning how to work with light.

PS I think it’s not correct to call it Chinese, just because it is going to be in China. It was developed by a Japanese company and this is what distinguishes it from Yongnuo, for example. And so, almost everything that we use is produced in China.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I also can’t call her Japanese :) if I met Nissin made in Japan, then I might have made a division into China / not China. Personally, I don’t like inscriptions like Nissin.Japan (like Japan!), And next to them is a small inscription made in china. In the case, almost all the equipment for my work is made in Japan, so not all of China :)

      • Paul

I have Thailand. This is probably why I have bad pictures).
In general, this is something personal, as you said. I think it’s not correct to poke a finger on an iPhone and say: this is crap that the company is American, and the phone is Taiwanese.

Probably, for professional work, reliability is worth the extra cost, but for amateur use, accessibility is our everything.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Agree that Nissin is far from Apple, and who calls Nissin outbreaks "Japanese"? I agree, this is a personal matter :)

          • anonym

            Nishin Japanese outbreaks since 1967.

          • Woozrael

Nissin is an old and respected flash company for decades. Yes, even older than Apple, and I personally used their flash made in Japan in the second half of the 80s, which still works great.
Because yes, Nissin is not Apple, they are older.

          • Sergei

In 1987, Nissin Digital introduced the world to the AF system, which is still used by many manufacturers in their flash units.

  • Paul

    I also want to add:
The fixture fixer is archaism. Then the people of Mars are going to colonize, but they still put the wheel. And the puff head lock button is tight. On Nikon's sb910 it is several times softer.

  • Eugene

I see it costs about like an SB-700, is there any point in buying China then?

    • Arkady Shapoval

SB-700 for 80-100 USD is more expensive. Much is designed for the inexperienced user. Certain “naked” parameters from Nissin are better, for example, the guide number (measured by the Chinese?), A zoom of 200 mm, as well as a complete lack of understanding of the intricacies of native flashes make users abandon their native flashes.

  • Not an idiot

This is who you need to be in order to put an amendment greater than + -2? This is the real Chinese FIG knows what. Only native flash!

  • Artem

Firstly, I want to express my deep gratitude to Arkady for the blog! Really very interesting to read! Thanks to the knowledge I gained, I started spending money on equipment! And the first purchase was d3100 + 18-55, and now d7000 and tamron 17-50! As for the outbreaks of third-party manufacturers, in the spring I wished money for my own flash and had the stupidity to buy a “German” DAF Doerr 42.
So, TTL works only on her forehead (the flash sees both the aperture and the zoom automatically sets and ISO sees!) When working in the ceiling only the manual! It takes a very long time to charge and at the same time disgustingly squeaks! Fully charged batteries have 200 puffs no more! And the power decreases only to 1/16! No FP sync! I'm sorry that this is of the top, all this to the fact that now I want a sb-700 !! And about all this China in the store they said that they often break! Vobschem take native puff! And no economies on these disposable ones!

  • Paul

It's funny, but it was thanks to this blog that I stopped soaring at the expense of technology).

    • Artem

And I just want so much good! According to the plan sb-700 and 85 1.8

  • Elfik

Judging by what is written in the instructions:
A - The flash is fully controlled by the camera electronics to ensure correct exposure
TTL - The flash is fully controlled by the camera electronics, but the flash power can be manually compensated

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks. So, apart from the power correction, they still have no difference.

  • Leonid

Thanks, Arkady. Everything is accurate and correct. How many times I bought Chinese components in fotika, so many times later I regretted. Marriage, where is hidden where is the inveterate lie in the parameters. I had to hold a camera in which a Chinese flash exploded, it was a good camera. I saw Chinese-made flash drives that burn ports in card readers. For myself, I made a rule: to buy into operation only what is recommended in the specification for the camera. Like the phrase: you buy for cheap, you pay dearly later.

Nishin Technology Center in Japan, manufacturing in China. So to write "china" everywhere is still incorrect. Especially since things like the guide number, for example, are measured by those. center and, according to the Japanese tradition of “keeping face”, Nishin, on the contrary, belittles it. In practice (according to tests), the power always turns out to be slightly higher than the declared one (examples are tests for http://strobius.com.ua/reviews-cat/flashes-reviews-cat/nissin-speedlite-di866-mark-ii-review.html, as well as tests of the MG8000 at a German photo exhibition). In general, the opinion of strobists, who are less skeptical of non-brand flashes, about Nisin is much more respectful. The same MG8000 - the best flash of 2013 according to TIPA.

    • Oleg Belikov

The previous comment from me accidentally happened anonymously.

  • Max

China is developing at a frantic pace and what will happen in 10 years can be imagined. I don’t have Nisin, but the Yongnuo YN-568EX II kit, Yongnuo YN-468-II, two Yongnuo YN-560 II and four Yongnuo YN-622C work well for me and everything looks very decent and high-quality. Of course, it’s logical for the pros to have their own puffs and that is not necessary. I think it’s necessary to get used to the fact that China is becoming high-quality and competitive with the original, and not just a cheap replacement.

  • Witold

Still, if we come to the conclusion that the native flash is cooler, then why are all the pros and cons of Nissin so intently protested everywhere ?! Personally, I have been using non-native ones for several years (including Nissin) and I am quite satisfied with the quality. And everyone is good at telling horror stories about Chinese gadgets (native gadgets can also be brought to explosions). As a rule, advertisers impose this attachment. Use it yourself - and you will not need the opinion of those who themselves do not know what they are talking about.

  • Sergey Krutko

Maybe this is of course prejudice, but I would not risk using China as the main light. They do not live long, but in frost or humid air, they die for a sweet soul. With the cost of the original puff in the region of 10-14 rubles, I see no reason to take China.

He took himself two Chinese puffs, as additional light in the premises. I gave less than $ 70 for each, including shipping from China, they look like sb910, they completely hold TTL, the LCD is large, the wheel and other buns. I took TTL, just in case, and manual options can be found for less than $ 50

  • Paul

Arkady, you forgot to indicate that the exposure compensation on the flash is applied half a stop, and not 1/3 as usual.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you, the information added to the review.

  • Pastor

I have only one camera flash - sb700, but there are also two Falcon Eye studio flash units, complete with umbrellas and stands. So far I've shot 500-800 puffs with them, but they completely suit me, no jambs on their side. I think that any flash will do for studio photography - the main thing is to get used to it. But in the reportage mode, for the time being, I would be afraid to take something other than the native flash - after all, the jambs in the reportage mode are unforgivable.

    • BB

Two studio Chinese 'Arsenal', have worked so far about 10-20k frames, the flight is normal

  • Other

I have long been tormented by the question, why do I need a button lock on the head of the flash?

It's not the first time I've come across a mention in reviews - it's good when it's there and it's bad without it. My Yongnuo 465 does not have this lock and I am very pleased with it. I remember with dislike when I had to take pictures of the SB-600 borrowed from a friend and constantly press the button to turn my head.

    P.S. Thanks for the review!
Just the other day I ordered myself one as an update. The unsurpassed ratio of ease of control, auto zoom, power and price has convinced.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Over time, the rigid mechanism loosens and during sequential shooting, the flash head rotates spontaneously when the camera rotates sharply, which interferes with operation. I’m writing for this for a reason, because it’s a real flaw that you encounter in real working conditions.

      • BB

Nissin Di866 worked for about five years, offhand> 100k puffs, nothing loose. On the SB-900, the constant jerking of this lock is annoying. Hands will reach - I'm picking nafig :)

    • Vladimir

And how your flash Yongnuo 465, works after 1,5 years from your recall.

  • Igor

I ordered the same for 7000. The native sb-700 is available for 10500. The first flash. Fotik D3100. In this situation, is there any point in overpaying for your own? According to this outbreak, reviews from joyfully positive to sharply negative. Is she so bad?

    • Artuwok

I myself have the same camera, I also think about this flash. I would be grateful for the opinions of users. Special thanks to Arkady for the review and Radozhiva :)

      • Elfik

I also have d3100, I photograph for myself. I stopped at this outbreak, because it makes no sense to spend money on the original, and YN a friend advised me not to buy.
The flash is quite suitable for my simple undertakings (home portraits, shooting at salsa parties). True, on the d3100 it looks just huge.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Such an outbreak is quite suitable for amateur and simple shooting, but you won’t torment it for days on end, and several times a week it will last a couple of years :) There are many subtleties, for example, with the same service.

        • Alex

The strobius has an adequate overview with examples and proofs, but this one is sucked from the finger, because the author is a fan of “native flashes”.

          • Arkady Shapoval

I have a blog and personal impressions, always focus on this.

          • anonym

            I agree.

        • Woozrael

And what are the subtleties with the service, for example?

        • Woozrael

I see you answer everyone, but do not rush to my question.
See such nuances that there is nothing to say?

          • Artuwok

Woozrael, for starters, nobody owes you anything :)
And then, I was also interested in this question, I found the following http://nissin.com.ua/active

I think that you yourself could find this information.

            • Woozrael

I found the address of the service center. But this is not a nuance, it is normal when the manufacturer has a service center. And when they say that there are nuances, it is interesting to find out what they are.

              • Arkady Shapoval

I really can not answer this question, it was understood that the service centers of non-native outbreaks work worse, I can not specifically judge.

  • No

Have strobius.com.ua a review sucked from the instructions and what examples are there? RAWy !?

  • Vladimir

And for me (for an amateur) on the D5100 Nissin Di622 and everything is fine. I recommend!

  • Sergei

Arkady hello! Tell me, did you take your used 900s or new ones, if the second-hand would be interesting, your opinion about the choice and is it worth contacting not new ones? Thanks for the blog sincerely respect)))) the first bookmark is on the list)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

I bought new ones, I needed them for work, so I didn't save on this. The 900 has been working for the third year already, the rubber insert from the “temple” has come off and the glass melted a little, changed the lamp a couple of times, the master says that they have a mileage of about 3 flashes. 60.000 is about a year, no flaws. I had a couple of German and Chinese, failed in 910-1 months of operation. Of course, this only means that it was in my case that these flashes behaved like this. Now I have a melted Metz-2 with a broken battery cover (it is attached to the electrical tape) and a plastic leg that is bent and with a 48mm zoom stuck. At one time I took it for decent money. I sometimes use it as a third light source.

  • Some0neElse

And how much does a lamp replacement cost on such flashes?

    • Arkady Shapoval

200-240 UAH, available under warranty, free of charge.

  • willow

I smiled about the problems with the service. I changed the lamp on my 622 and everything is ok! Fast and not expensive! But on the native canon, everything did not go so smoothly, I waited a long time for the lamp. Service is adequate!

  • Sergey Vladimirovich

I’ve been using this flash for half a year, I’m 100% satisfied, the quality of the materials is excellent, the functionality is excellent, I haven’t found any minuses for this category, it’s no worse than sb700.
On the stand, the power of which can be set to zero is ignited from the on-camera flash, that is, the built-in on-camera flash will work at idle and the di700 power can be controlled on the camera, conveniently. I bought for ridiculous money also gave a cool charger as a gift. Prices for Nikon's native flashes are unrealistically high.

  • anonym

Behaved by little things in terms of a squeak and a wheel ... pay more, three times more for your own Nikon! The main thing is that the squeak is not so loud ... this is very important when shooting.

  • Igor

By the way, a normal flash. Quite adequate for the money. I think Nikon for the sake of Nikon is not worth it.

  • Artuwok

I ordered myself such a flash. I have to pick it up tomorrow. I'll take a picture on the weekend and if anyone is interested, unsubscribe here :)
