Review Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2

Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 is a very good film wide-angle. The AI version with the serial number 540393 came to my review.

The lens was produced in different modifications, but with the same optical design. The first versions had the prefix 'N' in the lens name, which meant 'Novem' - 'Nine', this is how many elements have the optical design of Nikon 28/2 lenses.

Version List:

  • Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-N Auto 1: 2 f = 28mm (non-AI), 1970-1971
  • Nikon Nikkor-N 28mm 1: 2 (non-AI), 1971-1973
  • Nikon Nikkor-NC Auto 1: 2 f = 28mm (non-AI), 1973-1975
  • Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 (K), 1975-1977
  • Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 (AI), 1977-1981, this version is described in the review
  • Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 (AI-S), 1981-2005

Nikon now has the following 28 mm autofocus fixes:

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8 (MKI)
  2. Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8 (MKII)
  3. Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8D (MKIII)
  4. Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 28mm 1: 1.8G
  5. Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 1.4D
  6. Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 28mm 1: 1.4E ED

Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2

Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 is very well made, nothing to complain about. The lens of the old school is immediately felt in the hands. It's a shame the Nikon 28/2 series has never been upgraded to an autofocus version. Although a similar lens was released in 2012 - Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 28mm 1: 1.8G, but already of Chinese assembly, while all the old 28/2s were made in Japan.

The focusing ring is rubberized and rotates approximately 110 degrees. The MDF is 30 cm. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, only the trunk is slightly lengthened. The lens uses the CRC (Close Focus Correction) system to focus. Aperture blades - 7 pieces, aperture closes to F / 22. The diameter of the front filter is one of the most common - 52 mm. Like all old manual film lenses, Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 has all the necessary marks for a convenient photographer :)

The Nikon Nikkor 28mm 1: 2 is an excellent lens, very sharp in the center at any aperture. The edges of the image at open aperture are not the sharpest due to the coma. The lens is well assembled and is of interest even nowadays.

  • Andrei

Thank you for the review! As always interesting.
And where is the report from "vognehreschi" ?!))))

    • kiev_poznyaki

Thanks for the review. In such difficult (literally and figuratively) times, Arkady continues to delight almost daily with interesting reviews.
By the way, maybe it's time to release a book? If you build and structure this site, you can get a great picture-taking guide.
By the way, relatives Poznyaki moment recognized in the photo. How did you manage to climb a 36-story tower? Is there a problem with this? For a long time I want to shoot a night panorama of the Dnieper embankment.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, times are not the best in Kiev now. The city was actually removed from the 37th, the 36th elevator rides, you can go another 1 steps. A friend helped organize the shoot. The subject with shooting from balconies or roofs is not the easiest and sometimes quite dangerous or punishable.

  • Valery

    Good review, thanks !!!

  • Archer

Great photos Osokorkov and not Poznyakov :) nice to see your house :) with your permission I set myself on the desktop. Beauty! Arkady advise shirik or shirik super on Canon (manual, budget plan, but with good build quality and picture quality).
    Thanks for the review!

  • Ruslan

    Wonderful photos from Arkady!
Guys, tell me, why is a metal thing with a slot screwed at the base (side) of the lens?

    • Amatich

These are ears for manual diaphragm drive.

  • Igor

Arkady, what can you say about the Tamron SP AF 70-300mm f / 4.0-5.6 Di VC USD Nikon F glass compared to the similar Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor with a difference 1,5 times the price?

  • Dmitriy

.. I have one, series K, not AI, but later sawn in AI. Wonderful glass, with its own * live * drawing. HA are almost completely absent. There is a coma at f / 2, it can be seen on bright light sources in the corners of the frame, but the detailing even in digital remains at a height - I calmly shoot them at f / 2 at dusk .. At f / 2.8 the coma almost completely disappears.

  • Oleg

And how is it compared to 28mm 1: 2,8 AiS? Does anyone have information or comparison experience?

    • Dmitriy

I do not have 28mm 1: 2,8 AiS, but there was 24mm 1: 2,8 AiS. In detail / contrast, hole 2 in this 28mm is approximately 2.8 in 24mm. Compared to 24mm / 2.8, 28mm / 2 has almost no HA. Of course, at 28mm / 2 on f / 2, spherical aberrations are more noticeable, but they appear mainly on bright light sources in the dark (along the edges of the frame, in the form of * centrifugal * halos departing from them). In general, an interesting glass, with a character, artistic, not dry, if I may say so.

  • D

Pleased with the phrase "film wide-angle")))

  • Dmitriy

Damn, 18.000 rubles on Avito :( and he clearly uses the sold, so that the glass is rare and he has no competitors.
At the old rate, you could buy 28 / 1.8g for the same money.

  • Maria

I was given such a practice to shoot landscapes. But apparently, I hurried. With my crooked hands, the pictures are not quite sharp. It is especially difficult to shoot in poor lighting conditions.

From the point of view of physics (optics), is this logical: with a 100-fold increase in the picture from a modern lens with FR 2 (this is actually a zoom) - I just see a picture that looks like a noisy (although the photo itself is not noisy), as if smoothed by a filter. And at 800x magnification, the picture from this lens is already pixels. Camera - nikon dXNUMX. If you send me to finish reading the theory, I will be grateful for the advice.

From the point of view of work, everything is very convenient. I was scared that the aperture value would give an error in the camera system. For me, at 800d, the indicator displays the actual aperture value, which you set. The light meter works as usual.

Arcadia also wanted to ask how they shot the landscape from the roof - hand-held, or was there a tripod?

    • Roman

There 30 seconds of exposure - of course, or a tripod, or emphasis.

      • Maria

        Thanks! understandably)

Invented my own bike. Emphasis on your knees and shoot in batches. Washes one who is too lazy to itch.

    • Michael

With the D800, living without a tripod is a problem. A smoothed picture - a shutter speed that is too slow - is called blur.

      • Roman

Is it really difficult to take landscapes with any camera down in the evening, or does the D800 have some kind of special movement?

Evening - high ISO, long exposures. To some extent, the stub saves. From some moment it does not help and he - you need a tripod. Or high-aperture optics and good lighting. How else is it?

        • Michael

Due to the multi-pixel nature and the not-so-successful mechanism of the mirror, he has a special movement. Before sunset, not everything is so bad, and then, except for a tripod, nothing will save

  • Maria

    Thanks for the comments)
I’m a teapot, and if I can see a shake under a magnifying glass.
The tasks so far are to master the focus, even with the D800, the focus sensor works absolutely perfectly with this lens, hope for it.

Maybe I'm still not very good at avoiding greases and out of focus, but I already fell in love with this lens. He really, without too much harshness.

They do not claim artistic value - in terms of the “drawing” test - it is really warm, like butter.
https://vk.com/albums636784?z=photo636784_457248012%2Fphotos636784 today the sun quickly went behind the clouds, missed an interesting moment ((
https://vk.com/albums636784?z=photo636784_457248010%2Fphotos636784 interesting effect of flattening the background. But I liked it.
    https://vk.com/albums636784?z=photo636784_457248009%2Fphotos636784

Thanks to Arkady for the review, I would never have decided to buy a manual lens without it.

  • Maria

Here's another question that may not quite be related to the topic of glass directly.
Why in EXIF fr is incorrectly put down, 58 instead of 28. I went over the forums, they write that this error is not a bad symptom, but maybe someone had the same strangeness
    Thank you.

As for the rest, there were no problems in terms of interaction with the camera, even the aperture does not give an error on the indicator (as was the case with the d800 test camera in the store). My camera displays aperture, although there are no bonuses, but still ...

    • Dmitry

most likely, the lens was being repaired and a non-native chip was installed there.

      • Maria

        Thanks. Now it is clear)

      • Sergei

The article and comments are about a manual lens. There is no electronics in it.

        • Maria

Well then, I don’t know what then.
In general, to be honest, I'm not quite in the subject. How does the camera recognize the lens? Well, for manual optics, the diaphragm will definitely not be reliable. And ph fr - from time to time

          • Michael

By the fact that the chip read. And if there is no chip, but the diaphragm rheostat has cocked, then the camera will recognize the lens without a CPU. And what is it you have to choose for yourself

  • Maria

    Good evening!
A question for Arkady (if he sees it), the same story - just interested in the evening photo. I wanted to set the same parameters.
There, too, in the original for some reason the information is not the same as in the description. The shutter speed is not 30, but 10. And the aperture is 22 ... Here, it seems to me, the matter is not in the chip, but I don’t understand something. Thanks.

    • Sergei

Maria, have you entered information about lens data without a CPU into Nikon D800? This is done in the “Settings Menu” of the camera. I think if Nikon D800 recognizes your beautiful Nikkor 28/2 as correctly as possible, then there will be a minimum of errors in EXIF.

      • Maria

        )) did not contribute.

It just didn’t significantly affect the quality of the photos, so I don’t think it’s so critical. Several copies of manual optics have already been on Nikon.
        He somehow recognizes them.

It is important? I thought more if this could wag the process itself)

In general, by eye, taking pictures is even reckless (without accurate information on the screen, except for a light meter)

But with electronics, I realized (probably), thanks!

        • Michael

For work, this is not important. With information about the lens, the camera will insert the correct parameters into exif and display the aperture value. If no data is entered, the aperture will be displayed in numbers (1-2-3-4, etc.).

          • Maria

            Thanks, now I understand)
