Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM is a fast full-time zoom for cropped cameras of various systems. I reviewed the version for Nikon DX cameras, so when buying such a lens, pay attention to which system it is made for. The lens is suitable for all Nikon cameras, even the simplest ones, without a focus motor.

Main technical characteristics of Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM:

Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 is intended to be a relatively cheap replacement for 'native' lenses - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED IF SWM DX и Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 17-55mm 1: 2.8 IS USM.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 is a good weighty lens with a huge front lens that uses 77mm filters. The lens is made in Japan, the copy from my review does not have any obvious backlash, and the lens trunk does not spontaneously protrude. The lens has a metal mount and a special zoom lock at 17mm - 'Lock'. But from the side of the bayonet in the lens, you can see its entire electronic soul with boards, springs and other insides. I am concerned that access to such lens elements has not been blocked. And three more screws on the inner sections of the lens, which are located behind the front lens, do not look very good.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 - has fast auto focusalmost the same as the native Nikon 17-55 / 2.8... The high focusing speed is most likely due to the low travel of the focusing ring, which rotates only 45 degrees. I notice that virtually all of these third-party lenses 'save' on either the focus ring or the normal focus motor.

Auto focus is not only fast, but also enough silent. Noise level is several times lower than that of Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 и Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC, all thanks to HSM.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

When focusing and zooming, the front the lens does not rotate, with filters should not be any problems. The focus ring and zoom are rubberized. During zoom, only one lens section extends. The minimum focusing distance is only 28 см, which will allow you to get macro pictures with an increase of 1: 5, which is pretty good for this kind of lens. Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 has a focus distance scale and a zoom position scale.

Bad that the lens does not support continuous manual focus control, but in order to focus manually, you need to switch the lens to the 'M' mode using the 'AF M' switch. Failure to do so could damage the lens motor.

The lens has a 7-blade aperture, which closes to a maximum of F / 22 over the entire range of focal lengths.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The lens comes with a wonderful case and lens hood. The hood can be worn back and forth, while maintaining low access to the focus ring, even 17 mm.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The inside of the lens. Several boards in two rows.

Of course, one of the main features of the lens is the image stabilization system, which allows take off at longer values excerpts... There is a special mode switch on the lens barrel - 'OS ON OFF'. I may be nitpicking, but generally stabilized lenses will freeze the jitter a little. JVIthat I did not see with this lens.

The instructions somehow incomprehensibly say that the stabilizer is powered by the camera even in the 'OFF' mode within a minute after turning on the camera or after pressing the focus and / or metering button exposure, or during the time while the metering is working. If you listen closely, you can indeed hear a slight noise in the middle of the lens, even with the stabilizer in the 'OFF' position. When you press the focus button, the noise just increases - apparently the stabilizer starts working at full power. This oddity can seriously affect the lifespan of a camera battery. I think this method of OS implementation is not logical. Stabilizer on the lens SIGMA C 17-70mm 1: 2.8-4 DC OS HSM MACRO works in a similar way.

Important: when the lens is removed from the camera, or when the camera is turned off, if you shake the Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS a little, you will clearly hear a noise in the middle, as if something had fallen off there. This is normal lens behavior, and the lens group responsible for stabilization is noisy, in the off state the lenses are not 'suspended' in the magnetic field.

The lens was stuffed with 2 FLD glass elements and 2 aspherical elements.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

In work, Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 proved to be quite good. Focus misses are rare, but still happen. The sharpness in the center of the frame pleasantly surprised me. But on the edges of the frame, everything is not so good, and vignetting in the wide-angle range on open diaphragms. And of course, strong barrel-shaped distortion of 17mm. If you close the aperture below F / 4.0, then it's a sin to complain about the lens.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D80. EGF is 25,5-75 mm. On-camera JPEG L fine without treatment, reduced size to 3 MP. Everything was shot in N (Neutral) Picture Control. The long exposure noise reduction function and high ISO noise reduction function were turned off.

In general, I liked Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 much more than its counterparts from Tamron, especially the quiet focus motor and the diameter of the front filter. The diameter of the filter, equal to 77 mm, is considered a professional standard, under which an experienced photographer over time selects a fleet of filters.

Sometimes, when working in the cold, the focus motor starts to buzz / whistle, and the focus itself can take much longer.

Results

If you find a good copy of Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM, then such a lens will be an excellent staffer for every day and will even cope with more or less difficult tasks. The lens is attracted by a constant aperture value of F / 2.8 across the entire range of focal lengths, an image stabilizer, and fast and quiet auto focus.

    Good afternoon!
All day I’m thinking about buying 17-70 vs 17-50 (from this topic).
Tell me, which one holds back light better?
    Which is preferable for landscapes?
    Thank you in advance.

    • Yura

For landscapes, the lenses are similar, there is 17mm. and here is 17mm. At 17-70 / 2.8-4, when lengthening the focal distance, the diaphragm will be covered accordingly. I think 17-50 / 2.8 will be more convenient in this regard. But if you want to 17mm. shoot architecture, there will be something like this: https://ibb.co/k47tuH

    • Yura

      Or like this: https://ibb.co/j8Hwgx

    • Yura

Although the distortion is corrected in the editors.

    • Yura

In the second example, glare from the filter. The backlight holds well without a filter, but the side one is worse, sometimes huge light results at the bottom of the frame: https://ibb.co/kTk7Mx и https://ibb.co/ngga8c

    • Yura

The backlight 17-50 / 2.8 holds well. In the second example, the glare from the filter, without it they would not have been. But with side light worse, large glare is formed in the lower part, sometimes occupying up to 1/4 of the frame. https://ibb.co/kTk7Mx

The picture is unsuccessful, but as an example ... https://ibb.co/n9UL8c

What is its maximum aperture of 50mm?

Hello Arkady, I am writing to you for the first time and sorry off topic on the forum. But I only trust you to ask. I have such a problem: I bought a Kenon 24mm stm glass, a fix in one word, I heard a lot about it, both good and not so good, but now I have it. The first impressions are very good, but after filming the last calls, I'm a little out of my mind. I will explain - as if the sharpness in vmemu frame is very good on dirk 5,6, but just starting to enlarge the face and look eyelashes, it's just cute! Question: is such a copy caught or they are all soapy. Comparing 50mm 1,8 version 2, everything is ok, sharpness at 100% magnification for all 1000% (: !!! Thank you in advance, and sorry to bother you on the weekend!

        • Arkady Shapoval

Maybe anything, send a link to the archive with a photo, maybe I'll tell you more thoughtfully. Thanks.

  • Vadim

At focal length 50 it is perfect. On the rest of the focal points, everything is fine in the middle (40% of the area), the edges diverge at the edges, that is, it requires correction of chromatic aberration, for example, in Silkypix, click on the color contours with a pipette. There are no complaints about geometry.

  • Julia

Good day. Tell me, will sigma 17-50 with nikon 5100 function?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Good day. Yes it will.

  • Valery

Arkady, good afternoon, tell me please, I want to buy myself a 17-50 sigma, I went to the hotline and I can't understand, some sell for 11000+ UAH and most of them have a price of $ 280 - 7200-7500 UAH, what's the difference? Help understand.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You need to ask this in stores. Situations are different. The main dilemma is that the price of a lens can differ significantly for different markets. And, depending on where the lens came from (from Asia, America), such is its price. Also, the type of guarantee and other little things affect the price a little. The lenses, by themselves, are all the same from the same factory.

      • Valery

Arkady, one more question, I have Nikon 18-105, change it to 17-50 Tamron or 17-50 Sigma and don’t think about it? Because 18-105 quite a while ago I am not satisfied with the quality of the image. Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 17-50, as I understand it, will be much better than 18-105.

        • Arkady Shapoval

If you need a longer station wagon, you can change it for another Sigma 17-70 2,8-4 (there are several versions of them). But 17-50 VC, 17-50 OS are the best balanced options for image quality

          • Valery

Thanks, I will take sigma 17-50.

  • Andrei

Hello! Thanks for your reviews! Very professional and detailed! I have a question on this lens. I want to get this glass. Faced with the fact that the price for June 2018 varies from 7 to 12 thousand UAH. Although the name of the model is one. I assume that these are different versions, that is, released at different times. Could you explain how to understand where is which version?

    • Arkady Shapoval

All versions are listed here. There is only one option 17-50 (for different mounts, like Nikon / Canon). There are no more. The price varies due to the policy of the stores (country of the supplier and some subtleties).

  • Igor

does it make sense to change nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6g ed vr af-s dx nikkor to Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

      There's a meaning

      • Igor

taking into account the luminosity? or other parameters as well? the fact is that in this case we are working with the Nikon D-500, it has a fine AF + setting - so will the D-500 see sigma in the settings? besides all, getting a lens through a new mail is difficult in the conditions of a delivery warehouse to test on the back front, well, primitively, you can certainly check at least roughly to shoot the calendar numbers in the center with an open aperture, but can you use the AF correction in Nikon D-500 or not? with Uv.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Amendment + - will be seen for any chip lens.
Aperture pulls a lot of things. In the general case, covering the aperture to 3.5-5.6, to the equivalent values of the lens 16-85, we get a better image from the lens 17-50 / 2.8. In this case, the aperture is transformed into image quality from aperture. At the same time, sometimes the quality is not very critical, because even at 2.8 you can remove something, which is already very difficult to remove at 5.6. You can walk around the bush for a long time, but everyone comes to the conclusion that there is nothing better for work than a universal bright zoom. If the native 17-55 roads (although it would be at d500), then sigma tamrons will also work.
Personally, I had and still have 17-50 / 2.8 for work, and I never would have thought that I could take some kind of a dark brain instead, albeit vaunted 16-85. Perhaps a new 16-80 exchange would be arranged. Of course, everyone decides for himself and choosing a lens is always a difficult task.

          • Igor

I already thought about the issue of buying 16-80 is a little expensive but since after reading a lot of reviews on sites in particular and in your review I will order in secret (for 7200gr) a new one with 2 year warranty I hope I will not regret this sigma Save Arkady for the answer

            • Alexander

Be careful when choosing, I got two defective ones, there is a terrible soap on the right side of the frame .... even on f8, the first one passed it to the service, they said a marriage, they offered to take another one, and it's even worse there ... I've already ordered it in another store, I'll look there and test it.

              • Igor

                thank you

              • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Alexander, that's for sure! The quality of these lenses varies greatly. The first copy I bought was a wildly disappointing lack of sharpness, especially after the Nikkorov 35mm fix. Even the stock dark zoom shot much better. I changed it. The second turned out to be much more successful, and left him. If possible, you must carefully choose from several.

            • Alexander

I took the third one and this is darkness, I have 18-105 sharper than 17-50 on all diaphragms, I wash my hands. Maybe I'm so lucky or maybe it's a sigma batch like that ....

          • Michael

What about the stabilizer? Do not take into account? Although this is not for people and reporting, of course.

            • Arkady Shapoval

              What is a stabilizer?

              • Michael

Allows long hand-held exposures in low light. Let's say shooting at 50 mm from Sigma will turn out to be f / 2.8 - 1/80, from Nikon's dark zoom f / 5.6 - 1/15. That is, the equivalent, and the quality on the open at 16-85 is better than that of Sigma. The picture, however, should be static. The zoom with 2.8 somehow did not seem so fast to me and I preferred the stub, because the picture turned out better. Now if this and that))

  • Olga

Please clarify if there is any incompatibility of this lens with the D5100 carcass?

    • B. R. P.

Quote from this article: "The lens is suitable for all Nikon cameras, even the simplest ones, without a focus motor."

      • Denis

Olga asks if there is any problem, for example, as with the D7100, when when viewing photos the device freezes for a few seconds

  • Eugene

Yes, Denis is right, these and other "nuances" of incompatibility are of interest.

  • Sergei

I draw your attention to the possible presence of backing and front focus on this lens. Everything is of course corrected in the Sigma service.

  • Dmitriy

Nevertheless, I decided to try this lens for the D3200 (having the same D7000). And I bought a new one a month ago in an online store for 7200 UAH without having the opportunity to precheck on a carcass. In the presence of BF-focus, I planned to use it on the D7000 using fine-tuning AF.

    What happened:

    1. BF is absent. Therefore, I use it on the D3200, because It gives more detail than the D7000.
    2. The stabilizer is working. The picture in the JVI is slightly frozen, but not as noticeable as on the regular 18-55 / 18-140. It seems that the stabilizer is not always worked out, but in most cases. Without grease, it was possible to take frames up to 1/10 by 50 mm and up to 1/4 by 24 mm. I really missed this when using fixes.
    3. There is an unevenness in the focal plane. I even thought about returning it, but it's good that I didn't, because having filmed about 2 thousand frames did not notice this manifestation. I noticed only on tests-comparisons at 35 mm with a fixed 35 in landscape shooting using a hyperfocal at 7-9 apertures (when there should be maximum sharpness over the entire field of the frame). I noticed the unevenness when I photographed the tree from the balcony, being in front of the center of the tree. Focused on the top or bottom of the tree. The lower part of the trunk was at the same distance as the upper part. Portrait orientation (vertical). The top turns out to be very sharp, and the bottom is “floated”. If you take pictures by turning the camera over without refocusing, the top of the tree is “floating”, and the bottom is sharp. The "float" is only visible if you zoom in and look at it hard enough. But I'm used to analyzing pictures like that. Therefore, I was upset and wanted to return. But after taking regular (not test) pictures, I did not see the effect of this problem on them. I decided to leave and in the end did not regret it. On a 35-ke fix, the focal plane is perfectly flat (I checked it on the same tree and the same conditions).
    4. At 35 mm and diaphragms from 4 sigma, it gives technical quality no worse than 35 fix. Yes, up to 4 fixes are certainly better, no doubt. But for open apertures I have 50 1.4g.
    5. During a month of use, there were 2 freezes when the D3200 “didn't want” to press the trigger. It is treated by switching the camera. With other lenses this is not and never has been. It's not critical if you don't make money on it.
    6. The standard hood is very good and fastens tightly, you just need to snap it all the way in.
    7. Tight zoom, jerky. I’m not making a video. For the photo is not critical. The zoom lock button may never be needed.
    8. The spinning ring during AF operation is very annoying. At first, he often pressed with his finger, which is why the AF engine starts to squeak. After a few days I got used to it, I had to change my usual grip.
    9. Aperture 2.8-3.2 conditionally working. In low light, it can be used if other shooting parameters cannot be sacrificed. Also, in some scenes when there is backlight (including indirect), then on the open there will be irreparable HA. Indoors with dim lighting, you can safely use 2.8. Together with the stabilizer, excellent technically high-quality images are obtained without using ISO above 400. This was very lacking when I used a 35-fix and missed 18-140 / 18-55 :). Of course, this is for scenes where subjects can freeze :).
    10. AF rarely misses. Not more often than on 35-ke fix. Speed fast, faster than 35 matches.
    11. Actively used the polarik marumi on beach shooting. The pictures got a new breath :)

Conclusion: at the moment, for 7200-7500 UAH for a new full-time aperture zoom for crop, this is a perfectly balanced option. Especially if you can pre-check on your camera. But for creativity, there must still be a fix, although this sigma also solves part of the creative tasks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the detailed comment.

      • Dmitriy

And thank you for the fairly objective reviews that save people time and direct you to the right path of choice.

  • Lina

I have a stupid blonde question) .Yes, I understand the presence of zoom. The question is actually the same. When shooting, the image deletes the image, but you can say it doesn’t bring it closer. So it should be ??

    • B. R. P.

      Try spinning the other way.

      • Lina

Well, he is limited to 17 and 50 .. how close does he bring?

      • Lina

My concept is to approximate. This, roughly speaking, an object at a distance of 5 meters, approached 1 m))) 🙈

        • Boris

Zoom is just a lens with a different set of focal lengths; they can be universal (in your language, both zoom in and out), wide-angle (zoom out) and telephoto (zoom in). Sigma 17-50mm and the simplest Nikkor 18-55mm both zoom in and out. You do not notice the zoom effect due to the peculiarities of the viewfinder (it, again in your language, removes). If you need a lens for close-up photography of distant objects, look towards lenses such as the Nikkor 55-200mm (you need a version with stabilizer) or if the objects are not very distant, then the Nikkor 18-105mm (it both removes and zooms in). It seems like he just wrote.

          • Lina

Thank you very much. Everything is clear and accessible) 😘

      • Arkady Shapoval

This is a brilliant answer :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It should be so.

  • Alexey

Arkady, hello. Thank you for the great reviews. The only question that torments me a lot is whether it is worth completely believing the review for this Nikon lens version, if in general I was looking for a review for the version with the canon mount? (not only for this lens, as I usually look for information from your reviews for lenses under canon)

    • Arkady Shapoval

+ - all the same on canon.

    • Michael

The difference is usually only in the work of autofocus, because each has its own algorithms and can be successfully faked, or they may not

  • FED2

Arkady, thanks for the review! it is noticeable that the lens is very popular. Probably not in vain, it attracts so much attention. Tell me, what do you think, this lens in comparison with the Nikon 50 / 1,8D?
I'm interested in comparing sharpness, color reproduction, contrast, and the picture as a whole.

    • Dmitriy

I had 50 1.8d (bought new and sold pretty soon) and have been using sigma for 2 months now. If we take only the focal length of 50 mm into comparison, then sigma starting from 3.5 aperture in sharpness will be no worse than fifty dollars, in contrast it is much better than fifty dollars regardless of the aperture, in sigma color rendering the colors are neutral / natural, in fifty dollars the colors are heavily yellowed, moreover, even in lightroom it is difficult to make them neutral later. They are equally good in focus.
And it's all just at the focal length of 50 mm. And now think that you still have focal lengths of 17-50 and there is quite a stabilizer compensating for 3 steps of shutter speed.
Personally, I almost never remove the sigma from the camera, although I still have nikkor 50 1.4g. So practical and it gives a high-quality picture. But you need to check on your camera a specific instance.

  • Maksim

Are there people who use this sigma on the Nikon D500? There is a problem? There is a Sigma EX 30mm f1.4 which works great on the D90, but autofocus does not work on the D500 in LiveView mode.
He looked towards Nikkor 17-55. But it seems to be designed for 10-megapixel matrices, unlike this sigma.

  • Catherine

    Good afternoon.
Arkady, really want to replace my Nikorr 50mm 1.8 d lens with a Sigma 17-50, is the Nikon D300S camera worth it? Shooting an art model in height costumes dresses location locations sea fields mountains ruins, native is not an option because Expensive. Is it also worth replacing the indicated 50mm d with 35mm DX because the D300S is a cropped camera

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I would simply add 50-1.8 / 17 to 50 2.8d, and leave 50mm.

      • Catherine

Arkady, thank you for your prompt reply. The quality of the photos from this lens does not suit the very sharp shadows, great contrast, plus from a distance of more than 4 meters from the hands the model as in a box does not have space and composition, 18-105 nikor does not save the picture in quality, everything is flat, 85mm nikor wanted but read your review about crop lenses and experience with 50mm d led to sigme. Therefore, I still doubt that you would recommend 17-50 or 85mm 1.8g at the same price

        • Valery A.

Ekaterina, I think that “harsh shadows (maybe from a flash on the forehead? Try on the ceiling), high contrast” is not the problem of the lens, but of the image processing settings in the camera. You can also get rid of this in editor programs. Of course, 17-50 will give normal and wide angles (versus fifty) and some blur (and bulk) versus 18-105.

          • Catherine

Valery and thank you for your advice and participation. The point is not in the flash of the photo from this 50mm D lens in daylight, the dawn and the daytime turn out dirty or something, I use reflectors and remote covers with synchronizers (thanks to Arkady for the description of synchronizers and flash settings), the feeling that you have to accustom the moire between the lens and a person there is a lot in FSh on 18-105 3.5-56, but there is neither depth nor beauty or something. The problem seems to me that 50mm does not fit the D300S and I need a DX lens. And the essence of the matter is to help you take an 85mm 1.8 nikorr or 17-50mm Sigma plus two D300S cameras, the main one for thin shooting and a duplicate D40 family of guests. I don’t want to part with the D300S and I don’t see the point in the full frame. In the studio with 50mm1.8 D there are no problems, but there is no difference with 18-105 either. This means either the light or 50 mm 1.8 does not work with the D300S correctly

    • Dmitriy

Full-frame lenses do not reveal their potential on crop. Previously, I only read about it, but now I have personally verified it myself. Recently bought a full-frame camera. On the crop I had: sigma sigma, Nikkor 50 1.4G, Nikkor 80-200 2.8 MK2, Nikkor 50 1.8d, Nikkor DX 35 1.8g and several dark dx-zooms. So: on a crop for artistry in a limited space, it is dx 35 1.8 itself. Nikkor 50 1.4g on crop certainly gives a sharper picture, but when I used it at full frame, I saw it. The same border of the matrix, which the crop camera does not provide, a full-frame lens will also focus the image on this place. Or, on the other hand: a full-frame lens is designed with the expectation that the entire surface onto which the image is projected will be used. This is seen primarily in art photos where the diaphragm is open. Then this border of the full-frame matrix will bring to the frame the very highlight that can be seen on the crop. It is difficult to convey in words, you can only feel it yourself if you have all the tools: FF and crop camera and corresponding lenses.
      Substantive issues:
      1. Replacing 50 1.8d with sigma. Lenses for different tasks. For a 50mm crop, these are portraits and a close report. You will not be able to take landscapes a little, like everything that requires even a moderately wide angle. Sigma is primarily a full-time universal zoom: reporting, landscapes, subject. Portraits are the same, but artistry less than gives 50 1.8d. But much sharper with a more correct color rendering (in my opinion).
      2. Replacing 50 1.8d with dx 35 1.8g. Definitely yes. As for the artistic possibilities, I would say that there are more. Better sharpness, wider angle: much more comfortable indoors than fifty dollars. Large portraits will show slightly more geometric distortion. But it can be used almost fully in reports and landscapes. Again, remember that fifty is a full frame lens. All his possibilities are not revealed on the crop. On FF it gives the same frame as 33mm on crop. Those. 35mm on crop ~ 50mm on FF. And 50mm on FF is the most popular universal focal length (if you use only one focal length). And 50mm on crop ~ 75 on FF, which is “neither this nor that”.

      • Ekkatrina

Dmitry Thank you very much !!! This is what I wanted to know. You understood the essence by writing "words cannot convey it"
There is simply no desire to throw money out on an 85mm FF lens and get the same result as a 50mm 1.8 lens and a cropped lens is needed for a large camera.

  • Alexey

Arkady, hello! There is a review lens used with the D5300. The question is as follows. Why in the aperture priority mode, when shooting in the same conditions (subject, distance, lighting, etc.), with the same settings (aperture, ISO, PR, etc.), slower shutter speeds are obtained compared to the whale AF -P 18-55 VR? The difference is approximately 1-2 stops at 1/3 EV. After studying the question, I realized that the shutter speed, it seems, depends on the real bandwidth of the lens (transmission or T-stop). Does the Sigma trap more light than the plastic Nikkor? There is not a lot of information on the network on this issue, so I ask you to explain, if possible, why such a problem may arise.

    • Michael

      1 / 3-1 / 2 EV is quite possible - this is not a revelation

    • Dmitriy

If there is a difference in light transmission on one diaphragm, then you would hardly have noticed it. In a good way, it was necessary to test in a different way: fix in the manual all the settings, without exception, which affect the exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) so that the frame is normally exposed. You also need to fix the white balance setting. The perception of illumination of the frame may differ from it. Then make the same and equally illuminated frame with both lenses on the same focal and equally focused. Of course, lighting should only be artificial without street light, because the latter can change very much at any second.
In this way I tested the light transmission of 18-55, 18-140 and fix dx 35 1.8. Then he compared the frames. There was practically no difference in the illumination of the frame. Fix dx 35 1.8 has a very simple optical scheme compared to zooms and yet the illumination of the frame was almost the same.
If you use settings on the camera that activate automatic aperture / shutter speed / ISO, then you become dependent on a program code that uses the readings of the matrix light sensor and settings for the metering method.
It’s better to set all the settings manually and finally compare the illumination of the picture with your own eyes.

  • Anna

Good afternoon. I am considering this lens for purchase, I found it at a good price in an online store, but I'm afraid that there will be problems with focus ... The store offers me to take a docking station to set it up, but its cost is half the lens, does it make sense? Maybe it can be rented somewhere, someone came across it?

    • Pokemon

A good store can allow you to try on a lens and take a couple of shots.

    • Dmitriy

It seems like this lens cannot be adjusted using the “Sigma USB Lens Dock”.
Here is a list of supported lenses for this station: https://www.sigmaphoto.com/sigma-usb-dock

      • ferom

Nope. No way. He is not an "Art" series

  • Anton

Good day! Thanks for your lens reviews.
Please advise, there is Tamron SP 17-50 2.8 (Nikon D7100 camera), the sharpness is normal, but terribly noisy and overshot autofocus. Does it make sense to change to Sigma EX 17-50 2.8?
There are a lot of critical sharpness reviews about Sigma.

    • Dmitriy

      https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/AF-S-DX-Zoom-Nikkor-17-55mm-f-2.8G-IF-ED-on-Nikon-D7100-versus-17-50mm-f-2.8-EX-DC-OS-HSM-Nikon-on-Nikon-D7100-versus-Tamron-SP-17-50mm-F28-Di-II-XR-VC-LD-Aspherical-IF-Nikon-on-Nikon-D7100__173_865_377_865_498_865
dxomark “believes” that tamron is the same as sigma in distortion, slightly better in vignetting, but slightly worse in sharpness, aperture, and much worse in chromaticity.
Personally, my sigma on the d7000 autofocus works well (until I bought the d750 + tamron 24-70 2.8 g2). Now, of course, when you have to use d7000 + sigma for a short time, then of course I feel the difference in autofocus performance strongly. But until there was a d750, after all my previous glasses, sigma works best. Even better than the native nikkor dx 35 1.8. For tamrons of the g2 series, the autofocus module has greatly improved, for the first tamrons I am sure that it is worse than sabzh sigma. But autofocus on sigma is quite noisy. Watch the videos on YouTube how sigma autofocus is heard when shooting video from it.

    • Dmitriy

According to dxomark: I made a mistake on chromatics. Tamron is much better than sigma. Although in practice the level of chromatism I felt much less than on nikkor dx35 1.8.

      • Michael

You didn’t feel what dxomark measured) The level of transverse chromaticity at dx35 1.8 is very low, the main problem of freezing there is longitudinal chromatism

  • Volodimir

    Good day.
Will AF fine tune be active on the D7000?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nothing will happen if the setting for specific lenses is enabled only.

      • Volodimir

        Crazy.
I’m on uvaz - what will be the ability to be correct, how can front-or back-focus appear on Sigmi?

    • Dmitriy

Fine-tuning the autofocus on the camera is applied to the lens immediately for all focal lengths and for all focusing distances. Therefore, if the FB focus is manifested in different ways at different focal and / or different focusing distances, then fine-tuning the autofocus, you will not be able to adjust well.

  • Anna

Good evening. I choose between this lens and Nikkor 35 1.8
Tell me, under the same conditions, let's set 35ku to 2.8, and unscrew the sigma at 35mm, will they give the same bokeh?

    • B. R. P.

      Hardly. Optical designs are different.

    • Denis

they will give the same degree of blur on the same aperture
and the bokeh will obviously be different

    • Anna

And which picture will be more pleasant for portrait photography? By colors.

      • Denis

in color for portraits, Canon is better suited)
as for these two lenses, of course, the native (once) Nikon fix (two) will give a better picture.
but 35mm focal length is not for portraits, better than 50mm or 85mm

        • Anna

I have 50 1.8, but it's problematic to shoot with it indoors. So I choose something more universal ... and I just can't dare to take it.

    • Dmitriy

Here, I specially selected several photos taken on the D3200 on the DX 35 1.8 and on sabzhuyu sigma.
EXIFs are saved, you can see what apertures were and how the bokeh looks as a result. At that time, I was not yet good at developing raw materials, so the quality is so-so. unfortunately did not save raws. On 35-ku taken photos of the 7xxx series, the rest - on sigma.

  • Vladislav

Who tried it on FF? how will he show himself? if you switch to FF, can you add it to and in what modes? I am satisfied with the objective! on the d300s it works like a Kalashnikov assault rifle ...
I'm waiting for objective comments ... for fans of starry and dusting, please do not focus on this topic .. THANKS TO PROJECT

    • Mimocrocodile

This is the same lens under the crop. There will be a vignette on FF.

    • Arkady Shapoval

At full frame, at any focal and at any aperture and at any focusing distance, there will be a strong vignette.
At full frame, you can easily use it only in DX mode, but then all the charm of a full frame will be lost.

      • Vladislav

35DX works on FF at distances close to MDF. Perhaps in similar conditions, sigma will provide a margin?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Will not, in any way.

  • Alexander

Comments are powerful. As a user I will say. I will not talk about the pros and cons, dear Arkady said everything. He who knows the letters will read it.
I'm on the impression. Funny stuff. The back cover is strangely dressed, as if some barbs interfere. everything would be fine - but time is lost when changing glasses))
The lens itself is placed tightly on the carcass with pressure.
and most importantly - it's still not used to it - the rotating focusing ring is constantly "caught" under the grip and slows down a little. It is necessary to change the grip. And this is a habit)) and habits, as you know, have the resilience of Borodino's heroes))

    • Denis

and do not forget to remove the lock? I think this is the most unpleasant after rotating the zoom ring in the opposite direction to Nikon

  • Sergei

Tell me please, but on your copy were observed HA?

    • Dmitriy

On my copy they certainly are. The closer to the open and long end the more. Generally a strange question. I used more than 10 lenses: all were and are HA in certain conditions. What on fixes, especially on zooms. And this is normal. You need to know which apertures + focal lengths and in which scenarios they appear more and use this information to minimize this. Almost always, the developer program pretty successfully removes the HA.

  • Novel

I noticed two bugs when working with the Nikon d3300 camera
    firmware
    C 1.02
    L2.015

    1. The auto-off timer does not work, the camera remains on all the time.
    2. When viewing the image on the camera, the four-position button for navigating the image only works in the push-release mode, with a long press, the movement occurs only once.

    Is it being treated?

    • Novel

      UPDATED
I asked myself, I’ll answer: I’m not being treated. And this is written in plain text on the manufacturer's website:
Due to the communication specification of the OS unit, the function to automatically turn off the LCD display on the camera will take about one minute longer than normal.
Moreover, to magnify the image or to move the cursor to scroll, it is necessary to press the button each time.
