Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM is a fast full-time zoom for cropped cameras of various systems. I reviewed the version for Nikon DX cameras, so when buying such a lens, pay attention to which system it is made for. The lens is suitable for all Nikon cameras, even the simplest ones, without a focus motor.

Main technical characteristics of Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM:

Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 is intended to be a relatively cheap replacement for 'native' lenses - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED IF SWM DX и Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 17-55mm 1: 2.8 IS USM.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 is a good weighty lens with a huge front lens that uses 77mm filters. The lens is made in Japan, the copy from my review does not have any obvious backlash, and the lens trunk does not spontaneously protrude. The lens has a metal mount and a special zoom lock at 17mm - 'Lock'. But from the side of the bayonet in the lens, you can see its entire electronic soul with boards, springs and other insides. I am concerned that access to such lens elements has not been blocked. And three more screws on the inner sections of the lens, which are located behind the front lens, do not look very good.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 - has fast auto focusalmost the same as the native Nikon 17-55 / 2.8... The high focusing speed is most likely due to the low travel of the focusing ring, which rotates only 45 degrees. I notice that virtually all of these third-party lenses 'save' on either the focus ring or the normal focus motor.

Auto focus is not only fast, but also enough silent. Noise level is several times lower than that of Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 и Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC, all thanks to HSM.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

When focusing and zooming, the front the lens does not rotate, with filters should not be any problems. The focus ring and zoom are rubberized. During zoom, only one lens section extends. The minimum focusing distance is only 28 см, which will allow you to get macro pictures with an increase of 1: 5, which is pretty good for this kind of lens. Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 has a focus distance scale and a zoom position scale.

Bad that the lens does not support continuous manual focus control, but in order to focus manually, you need to switch the lens to the 'M' mode using the 'AF M' switch. Failure to do so could damage the lens motor.

The lens has a 7-blade aperture, which closes to a maximum of F / 22 over the entire range of focal lengths.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The lens comes with a wonderful case and lens hood. The hood can be worn back and forth, while maintaining low access to the focus ring, even 17 mm.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The inside of the lens. Several boards in two rows.

Of course, one of the main features of the lens is the image stabilization system, which allows take off at longer values excerpts... There is a special mode switch on the lens barrel - 'OS ON OFF'. I may be nitpicking, but generally stabilized lenses will freeze the jitter a little. JVIthat I did not see with this lens.

The instructions somehow incomprehensibly say that the stabilizer is powered by the camera even in the 'OFF' mode within a minute after turning on the camera or after pressing the focus and / or metering button exposure, or during the time while the metering is working. If you listen closely, you can indeed hear a slight noise in the middle of the lens, even with the stabilizer in the 'OFF' position. When you press the focus button, the noise just increases - apparently the stabilizer starts working at full power. This oddity can seriously affect the lifespan of a camera battery. I think this method of OS implementation is not logical. Stabilizer on the lens SIGMA C 17-70mm 1: 2.8-4 DC OS HSM MACRO works in a similar way.

Important: when the lens is removed from the camera, or when the camera is turned off, if you shake the Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS a little, you will clearly hear a noise in the middle, as if something had fallen off there. This is normal lens behavior, and the lens group responsible for stabilization is noisy, in the off state the lenses are not 'suspended' in the magnetic field.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

The lens was stuffed with 2 FLD glass elements and 2 aspherical elements.

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM

In work, Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 proved to be quite good. Focus misses are rare, but still happen. The sharpness in the center of the frame pleasantly surprised me. But on the edges of the frame, everything is not so good, and vignetting in the wide-angle range on open diaphragms. And of course, strong barrel-shaped distortion of 17mm. If you close the aperture below F / 4.0, then it's a sin to complain about the lens.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D80. EGF is 25,5-75 mm. On-camera JPEG L fine without treatment, reduced size to 3 MP. Everything was shot in N (Neutral) Picture Control. The long exposure noise reduction function and high ISO noise reduction function were turned off.

In general, I liked Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 much more than its counterparts from Tamron, especially the quiet focus motor and the diameter of the front filter. The diameter of the filter, equal to 77 mm, is considered a professional standard, under which an experienced photographer over time selects a fleet of filters.

Sometimes, when working in the cold, the focus motor starts to buzz / whistle, and the focus itself can take much longer.

Results

If you find a good copy of Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM, then such a lens will be an excellent staffer for every day and will even cope with more or less difficult tasks. The lens is attracted by a constant aperture value of F / 2.8 across the entire range of focal lengths, an image stabilizer, and fast and quiet auto focus.

  • Novel

Arkady, thank you for the excellent reviews.
I am faced with the choice of staffer for Nikon D7000, I bought with a whale 18-105mm. Nice lens but a bit dark.
There is an opportunity to buy Tokina 16-50 / 2.8, but there is a lot of conflicting information here and XA and the lack of sharpness on the open.
To a similar tamron and sigma, the soul doesn’t lie because of the constructiveness and the spread of quality.
I do not like the fact that the stub constantly consumes battery power.
In short, he already ate his own brain.)))
I believe that the Tokin 16-50 / 2.8 is a rather rare lens. I would like to know your opinion.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I didn’t deal with Tokina :(

  • Arkady (namesake)))))

Arkady, good night. I don’t know where to ask the question, can you say something about Sigma 17-70 2.8-4, how to replace the whale 18-105?

Today I bought this glass (Sigma 17-50mm f2.8) The glass is gorgeous. At first I wanted to take the Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G DX, but when I tried on Sigma I didn’t want to take it off. On my copy of 2,8 at all focal working. The lens is very sharp. Stub helps. True discomfort brings a rotating focus ring, and a not-so-comfortable zoom ring. But picture quality overrides these small cons. The kit also comes with a very convenient carry case for the belt, although it is impossible to put it on my Lowepro belt, since the belt is wide. The rest is chic glass for crop for a ridiculous price of 15 500 rubles. I settled on the Nikon D300s.

  • Vasilisa

    don't knock - don't call lens SOLD

Recently I also bought this one (On Canon). I agree with the review. My 1st copy turned out to be without front / back tricks. Sharp at 2.8 at all focal points. Slightly disappointing with noise. No, it is not very noisy, BUT compared to the latest kit from Canon 18-55 with STM motor - it is noisier. STM - almost inaudible, which is good for video. But the whale is dark for many situations. I tried my dear, expensive Canon 18-55 2.8 USM, but even there the focusing turned out to be much noisier than the STM whale! It's a pity there is still no high-speed version with an STM motor, video lovers would like it.
In terms of speed, the STM kit and this Sigma are practically the same, I did not catch the difference .. quickly and accurately, it smears extremely rarely.

Is it worth it to change canon18-55stm to sigma 17-50 2,8 ex-dc-os hsm. According to tests, they are almost identical in sharpness, only different aperture ratio.

      • Valery A.

IMHO, lenses of the 17-50 / 2,8 type are something in between the whale and fixes of the indicated FR, both in aperture and in the picture.

  • Dmitriy

Please tell me what viewing angle is approximately, is it the same as on the whale (18-55) with a value of 30-35?

  • Dmitriy

Very nice lens. Purchased in March 2014 in Seoul. Then bought the D610. Now I can sell the lens accordingly (on Nikon). 16000 rub. svatkov@yandex.ru

  • Garik Armenia

Good afternoon, many thanks for the review, in the reviews there are many comparisons of Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM with Tokina AT-X PRO SD DX 16-50mm f / 2.8, and basically all comparisons are in favor of the latter, if you have experience using both, could you share your experience and opinion, is there a difference in build quality and in which of both cases it is easier to run into a low-quality copy. The problem is that in Armenia we have to acquire one of these instances on the spot and the subsequent adjustment also. So I can’t check with the purchase. I decided to buy on ebay Tokina found only Used, it costs about $ 400, Sigma also has the same amount on average (new)

  • Alex

here, too, I decided to buy a new glass for Nikon D300s, while a little money was collected in my hands, now I hesitate with the elections between sigma 24-70 and 17-50 of the same manufacturer. in principle, the focal length of both glasses suits me. Now the question is what are the differences between these miracles except valuable and focal length. I would specifically like to know about the difference between the pictures, the assembly and the duration of the service. Dear photographers, advise something)))

  • Elena

Alex, both lenses are great. BUT…. At any forum you will first of all be asked for what tasks glass? There is a very big difference between 17 and 24 at the wide end on the crop, much more than between 50 and 70! At 17-50 and at 24-70 I can film whatever I want, because in general, most of all I love fixes and widths, and when there is no telephoto with me - for this there is a crop in the FS, if something does not fit into the frame - glue, if necessary. Weddings usually take 24-70. Again, there is no way to go without a wide angle in the registry office, but many manage. I would like to help you, clarify your tasks, the availability of other lenses and the experience of shooting with them. And which do you like more, the “C” button or the gluing?

  • Vladimir

I can not choose between this lens and the new 17-70 2,8-7 sigma. The quality of the photos is a little better, and there the focal ones are alluring. apparatus D5200

    • Elena

With equal values at the wide end, you will not notice the difference between 50 and 70 mm on the crop, because the difference is more visible at the wide end than at the long. But you will feel that the variable value of the aperture ratio with an increase in focal lengths will tend to increase in numerical terms (i.e., to decrease the amount of transmitted light). Those. preferably (if sigma) 17-50 / 2,8. I have been using this lens for 5 years intensively on the crop, the design and photo quality are excellent.

  • Sasha

Hello everyone, comrades, tell me, was there 17-50 for Nikon without a stub ????? Really needed, thanks!

  • Smoke

I got this lens 10 days ago with a Nikon d7100 kit. Before that, I read a bunch of horror stories that with this model there is a problem with the camera freezing. In fact, everything is not so scary. When viewing a frame immediately after shooting, with a frame enlargement - movement around the frame is carried out by single presses of the joystick, after a minute and a click in the lens, smooth movement returns, it does not cause inconvenience. But I had to choose the lens carefully. I looked at 4 pieces (I didn't find any more), all showed a front focus from 2 - 20 mm., It was purchased with a f / f of 4-5 mm (depending on the focal area) in the camera there is a fine tuning of auto focus. And here is a lens with a f / f 2 mm. did not react to auto focus adjustment, only the introduction of +2 mm to the entire camera by default helped. Sharp across the entire field of the frame, chromatism around the edges is quite noticeable, but there is distortion at small focal lengths in the editors, but acceptable. The stabilizer copes with its duties, although I try to avoid it, since the sharpness is not the same.
I could not find such a lens without a stub. But this specimen got no worse (without a stable one). There are no complaints about the 2,8 aperture. In general, harmony price - quality 16900 rubles.

  • Alexey

It seems that I know that I will buy myself a jam day =) Thank you so much for the review, Arkady, it's nice to read you))

  • mihon

Do you think this lens will fit the Nikon D5200?

  • Jury

Arkady, what do you think is better to take - this sigma or the native 16-85 f / 3,5-5,6? How much better is the 16-86 built or is it generally a delusion?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Sigma is better because of aperture.

  • vladimir

no matter how they praise sigma 17-50, each praises its own, but sigma 24-70 with an ultrasonic drive, although without a completely different class of stabilizer, using a 70mm focal lens and 2,8 aperture + HSM drive on the crop, portraits with 50mm and didn’t stand close, maybe for someone a wide angle is a priority, but people are more interested in contemplating their face and their loved ones - this is my personal opinion

    • Hetzer

Well, for starters, these are different glasses for different purposes. Everything else follows from the first statement.
And for 70-200 2,8 portraits are even more awesome, continue?

      • vladimir

the price of course is different, but the focal price is not that 70-200, go ahead, listen to the pros

  • Hetzer

Glass is just great! AF is fast and quiet; the picture is not bad for glass of this class. The first time I got a sample without FF and BF, maybe lucky. Of course there are drawbacks, but there are fewer than both versions of the tamron. Nikkor is inferior quite a bit, but taking into account the price, you can forgive. Sometimes it is with him that the flash in the TTL mode (power) is stupid, but I usually shoot on the manual using a softbox or reflector. Camera d7000, commercial shooting.

ps Arkady, you have very good reviews, keep it up! I would really like more reviews on accessories (photo filters, tripods, ball heads, etc.)

  • Gordey

This monster came to me yesterday. I'm not overjoyed. Feels more professional iron, heaviness, diaphragm. Hole 2,8 is fully working, which is good news. The only thing - no, no, it smears the focus, I sin on the carcass, since it smears with me from 35mm. And so - the lens is completely worth its money. In the near future I plan to switch to d7100 (now d5100), let's see how the lens will be on the flagship crop, but for now I'll be content with what I have. In general, whoever has a question to take / not take - TAKE. You can hardly find a better alternative for that kind of money. 16-85 (extremely dark) and that is more expensive, but I also plan to take it, just with the d7100 carcass.

    • Vladimir

Gordey, how scary is the dark 16-85? I plan to take it as a station wagon on different trips.

      • Gordey

Well, sigma has 2,8, and 16-85 is 3,5-5,6. In the light of the sun or with a flash, I think it is painless.

        • Vladimir

Hello!! Tell me, please, no one is selling Zoom 17-50 2.8 (not 2.8-4) or 18-50 2.8 macro on canon! I want to buy! Change your kit, tk. it attracts aperture for zoom. Today I tried 18-50 macro, I was pleasantly surprised !!)))

Why doesn't anyone talk about adjusting 17-50 on a Sigma USB dock? Are they incompatible or what?

This is a feature for the ART series. It is not suitable for these lenses.

Arkady, friends! Tell me whether it is worth changing your 18-105 to Sigma 17-70 2,8-4 OS. I face the choice of extra 35mm or aperture.
