Review Nikon 18-140mm VR

Nikon 18-140mm VR was introduced in the summer of 2013 as a replacement for the obsolete Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Asphericalreleased back in 2006. I suspect the 140mm focal length was dictated by the need to accurately distinguish the new '18 -140 VR 'from the old '18 -135', which turned out to be not the most popular lens.

Main technical characteristics of Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical:

It is interesting to note that the Nikon 18-140mm VR only has one aspherical element in its optical design, while the old Nikon 18-135 has two. You can view and compare optical schemes in the section about 'Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses'.

Since the Nikon 18-140mm VR has a built-in focus motor, it is perfect for any Nikon DX class camera. The lens itself can act as “lens for all occasions“. True, for versatility you will have to pay low aperture.

Autofocus speed is average, almost exactly the same as that of Nikon 18-200mm GII VR, Nikon 18-200VR, Nikon 18-300 / 3.5-5.6 VR, Nikon 18-300 / 3.5-6.3 VR, Nikon 18-135 и Nikon 18-105VR, if we compare the focusing time from infinity to MDF and vice versa (analysis can be carried out on video from the network). Of all the Nikon DX zoom lenses, it only focuses noticeably faster Nikon 16-85VR, Nikon 17-55 и Nikon 18-70. Funny but even the simplest lenses Nikon 18-55G, 18-55GI, 18-55 VR, 18-55VRII still focus a little faster than Nikon 18-140mm VR.

The autofocus speed at 18 mm focal length is slightly faster than 140 mm. A decrease in the auto focus speed with an increase in the focal length is common to almost all super-zooms Nikon DX.

The lens has internal focusing, which makes it possible to use light filters without any problems. The front lens also does not rotate when zooming. But the rear lens moves when zooming and creates the effect of a “vacuum cleaner”. The zoom ring is rubberized, wide and easy to operate.

The minimum focusing distance is only 45 см. This is a very good indicator for super-zoom, and allows you to shoot objects close-up, with a magnification of approximately 1: 4.3.

The lens has a 'A-M' focus mode switch, exactly the same as previous lenses: Nikon 18-135 и Nikon 18-105VR. Sorry but the lens does not support continuous manual focus control Nikon M / A.

The 'A-M' switch in this lens is non-standard. Normally, in all lenses equipped with such switches, manual focus cannot be performed in 'A' mode. But here is what the manual says for Nikon 18-140mm f / 3.5-5.6G:

Manual focus can be performed even if the AM lens mode is set to A. Set the camera to focus on AF-S and press the shutter-release button halfway to autofocus. Then, while holding the shutter-release button halfway, manually rotate the lens focus ring to fine-tune the focus. Note. Do not try to rotate the focus ring while the autofocus function is operating. When the autofocus function completes, release and press the shutter-release button halfway again.

Thus, in AF-S mode, after successful focusing, you can still rotate the focus ring to adjust the focus or refocus it. Unfortunately, such a property is only a miserable semblance of a full-fledged regime M / AM with the possibility of constant manual focus control.

You can find more information about lenses with a similar feature in the section Focus Features 'A', for some Nikkor lenses with the 'A-M' switch.

It's a pity, but, unlike more advanced lenses, Nikon 18-140mm VR, apart from focal length markers, does not have any useful designations, such as focusing distance or depth of field.

Made lens in Thailand. There are no complaints about the assembly. Very good, which, unlike Nikon 18-105VR и Nikon 18-135The new lens has a metal mount. The lens from this review is new, and therefore I have not yet observed a spontaneous loss of a trunk under its own weight, perhaps such an ailment will never occur in the lens. But still, a small drawback is the lack of a hood in the package, which will have to be purchased separately. Nikon 18-140mm VR uses the HB-32 lens hood exactly the same Nikon 18-105VR, Nikon 18-70 и Nikon 18-135.

The lens has a built-in image stabilizer and a dedicated 'VR ON OFF' switch to turn it on and off. The stabilizer works fine, I have no problem took off without grease at shutter speeds of 1/60 second and 140 mm of focal length. When turning on and off, the stabilizer emits quiet clicks.

Nikon 18-140mm VR tried to do well, it has good sharpness, but chromatic aberration is not so good. The lens noticeably suffers from distortion (especially at 18mm, the gallery has examples of photos with curved walls) and vignetting on open apertures. In backlight, it can easily catch glare. I did not find anything outstanding or serious flaws in the lens.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D80 using protective filter fox Digital SC UV 67mm. On camera JPEG L fine without treatment, reduced size to 3 MP. Everything was shot in N (Neutral) Picture Control. Noise reduction function is disabled at slow shutter speeds, noise reduction function at high values ISO - 'Norm' or 'Off'.

In my opinion, the Nikon 18-140mm VR can be a worthy replacement for staff members from the category 18-55 / 3,5-5,6, but change to it Nikon 18-105mm VR I don’t see the point. Yes, and the newcomer is still a little expensive. The advent of Nikon 18-140mm VR can satisfy those who need focal length Nikon 18-105mm VR 'few', and Nikon 18-200mm VR - roads. I almost never met Nikon 18-140mm VR as a complete lens for modern cameras and I think that it is much more profitable to buy a kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR... My rating of stock Nikon DX zoom can be found in the 'Choosing a Nikon Camera and Lens'.

Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical turned out to be a worthy super-zoom. Such a lens is suitable for most photo tasks and will be damn useful on vacation or outdoors.

  • Olya

and here I am considering 18-140 or even 18-200. I don’t want to change the lenses during the shooting, I need some kind of station wagon.

    • BB

You can change cameras, it's faster ;-)

    • lech

Are you 18-140 and 18-200 budget ones?

      • Alexey

in general, they are budget ones. those. cheap relative to other similar zoom lenses.
        the main word is relatively))))
        photo in general is ruinous)))
in fact, a good zoom already has a price tag from 1000doll to 2500doll.

  • Olya

lens with stub and autofocus. Maybe not Nikonovsky, but another company?

    • BB

Tamronovsky 18-270 it washes pretty much on the extreme focal lengths, and its resolution is not very good - a colleague has, the version for Canon - with 40d is not bad (10MP), and for 60d it is already rather weak (18MP). I definitely DO NOT advise.
Nikon 18-200 - 200 soap, and 18 does not shine.
Nikonovsky 18-140, IMHO, is a little expensive compared to 18-105. And so, I recommend one of them, there is a possibility - take 18-140.

      • Alexey

        that's right
18-140 is not bad but the price tag is clearly overpriced. and something a lot of complaints about the quality of 18-140, probably the threshold of quality was lowered.

  • Olya

    But what about Nikon 24-85 and 24-120? I have a Nikon 5100
    Thank you

    • Alexey

24-120 / 4 is a good all-round lens that works great with crop (with D5100).
on the crop, it needs shirik in a set, some kind of Tokin.
24-85 - there is no special meaning in it.

  • Olya

Thank you all very much! I will dwell on 18-105 for now.

    • brighty

Do not make mistakes, 18-140 is better than 18-105, and do not listen to anyone who says that there are many complaints about 18-140. 105mm is short for travel and the plastic mount, 140 is also not a super telephoto, but 18-200 expensive. Therefore, if you do not want 55-300, which is cheaper than 18-140 and optically better than it, then still 18-140 will be preferable to a simple whale 18-105. Changing lenses is not such a hemorrhoid activity if you have only two of them, but having 18-55 plus 55-300 you cover all the necessary and often used focal lengths.

      • BB

18-140 is not much better than 18-105, slightly longer - yes, and more expensive.

  • anonym

Or maybe 16-85 would be more interesting.

    • Olya

      16-85 or 18-140?
I understand that different focal lengths, but still? )))

      • Olya

        Tamron 18-200?

      • brighty

It seems that you do not understand anything.

You already have from 18 to 55 mm, why do you still need glass with 18 mm, or do you think that they are different? If you do not like what you get from 18-55, then to you from 18-140 and 18-200, etc. will not like it.
Want a different picture quality, so look for fast fixes.

And so that you understand that you can shoot great shots at 18-55, here's an example: Nikon 3300 + 18-55.

The photo is not mine, but I think the essence is clear.

        • Olya

Bright, I'm looking for a replacement 18-55. I will not carry three lenses. 18-55 I will take off.

      • brighty

        One more.

      • brighty

        And more.

  • Olya

    oh, a difficult choice.
    Well, 24-120?
I take pictures according to the principle - now the general plan, then a separate face, then a chamomile against the background of something))
therefore I want something of high quality, but universal.
    I was thinking about 55-200 ..

    • BB

18-55 + 24-120 is a strange set, if without 18-55, then 24mm is often not enough to capture the 'general plan' (at least on my 18-105 18mm is very popular).

18-55 + 55-200 - normal, average in quality, 55-200 in quality, about the same as 18-105, or a little sharper.

And changing the lens is a matter of habit. If the lens is 'at hand', then its replacement is a matter of 10-15 seconds.

    • Oleg

Olya, look, please: a little lower I posted examples of photos from glass 18-140 (with an emphasis on versatility).
Judging by the description, I also shoot “... now a general shot, then a separate face, then a chamomile against the background of something”. I would be glad if it helps with the choice)
      PS
I was 18-105. I will say that the replacement for 18-140 was worth it, although many write that there is no big difference. There is a difference.

  • Goalkeeper

As you can clearly see, the Nikkor 18-140 lens is excellent for its class copes with portrait photography - an amateur photographer, having got used to it, can easily afford to do with a single lens in almost all life situations. For me, only a wide angle is missing here, but a wide-angle is always an independent lens. But, if the photographer does not need to shoot the beauty of old cities or crowd scenes, then it is quite possible to do with the only one 18-140.

    • Oleg

      +1
Amateur))) I have been using 18-140 for a year and a half in conjunction with the D5300. Report: travel, rest. Enough for everything - and “old town and blossoming apricots”))) I shoot RAW, then ACR. With a certain experience, it is possible to work out the architecture in detail and depict macro with dragonflies reasonably enough) From the point of view of universality, this is a good solution, unambiguously. Regarding quality - here you just need to clearly understand the level of tasks to be solved)))

      • anonym

These are examples at 18mm open diaphragm.

      • Oleg

        same point for 70 mm

      • Oleg

105 mm in daylight. So the glass is really universal and enough for the amateur with a margin

      • Oleg

        PS
To close all the focal points to the maximum - 140 mm. I apologize in advance for the "exhibition", but I think that it is better for an amateur to show by example than to tell :))

  • Lana

Good evening. I own a DSLR since 2012, I do not consider myself a professional, and not enough, which I understand in terms. I re-read all the comments available here, but the question posed for myself did not solve this. Recently sold its Nikon D3100 with an 18-55 whale lens. To date, I have decided on the camera (this is NikonD5300), but I couldn’t make a choice between the 18-105 and 18-140 lens. I shoot mainly a child (at home, matinees in kindergarten where they mostly do not stand still, but also on the street). Would it not be dark 18-140 for a room without using a large flash? because I have 55-300, which I do not like to take off the matinee

    • Valery A.

And what did 3100 not suit you? One could try it + 35 / 1,8. These zooms are of course dark for indoor use, they are the same as 18-55. Unless the sun is in the large windows. Zooms from F / 2,8 are not much different. A DX 35 / 1,8 would probably have helped. And guaranteed - a flash into the ceiling, and s400 suits me, especially in kindergartens the ceilings are low and white as a rule.

      • Lena

as a parent, I don’t have the opportunity to move around the room, and sometimes I want to take my child closer (bigger), which you won’t do with 35 / 1,8, because we are sitting in a place reserved for parents

        • Valery A.

Clear. I also prefer zooms when “reporting” children. Then you need it (at least 18-105, not in principle) and a flash with a possibility. “To the ceiling”. Not artistic, but example:

        • BB

18-140 is as dark as 18-105.

The only correct solution for your tasks would be to purchase an external flash (you could buy a flash and not change the device). Even a relatively inexpensive 'Chinese' with TTL will do the job.

Well, there is another option - a fullframe (there are significantly higher Iso workers), but this is completely different money.

  • Yarkiya

18-140 is certainly preferable, especially given the choice of camera, the 5300 works fine at high ISOs and in some cases, you can do fine without a flash. But then you run the risk of using the wonderful 55-300 lens less and less, it is of course with slow autofocus and dark for rooms, but optically it is very good. I understand that money decides a lot, but it may make sense to look at the 16-85 lens?

  • Lena

Thank you all very much for the advice. I will dwell on 18-140. Lens 16-85 is certainly a good option, but you're right, money decides a lot (the difference of 10t is significant for me). I will definitely buy an external flash over time.

    • Oleg

Lena, if you plan to shoot just for your home collection, then 18-140 will be the preferred option. The D5300 in combination with 18-140 works decently at high ISOs. At least you can shoot something static even in poor light, even with your hands (there is an example of a photo in a cathedral above, where ISO 3200 was taken without a flash). The situation will be a little worse if there is movement (and children, alas, have a habit of moving). Using the built-in flash of the D5300 is somewhat problematic, since the 18-140 is still purely physically long and its shadow will be present in the lower third of the frame at short foci (the same for the 18-105). Alternatively, the D5300 in the “sports” mode for dynamic scenes (we continue to talk exclusively about the home collection) quite correctly raises the ISO itself and the shutter speed allows you to take pictures with minimal noise even without using a flash. In normal daylight, there are no questions at all - the lens is pleasantly sharp and versatile.

  • Olya

Friends and comrades! Thanks so much for the tips and comments. I bought a Nikon 16-85, albeit an expensive lens

    • brighty

      Fine. Good shots.

    • Oleg

In any case, a new lens is always great! Good luck!
For those who are still looking. I looked again at the description of 16-85 from guru Arkady Shapoval and found an interesting phrase from the author: “I do not advise changing models 18-105, 18-140, 18-200, and 18-300 for this lens”. It is clear that everything is subjective. Out of interest, I took to shoot 16-85, but I did not find any effect "wow," in comparison with 18-140. It is clear that I am not a pro, and I cannot make a diagnosis :). But these are the same 1: 3.5-5.6G. Perhaps it makes sense to pay 5000 UAH for a window with a distance scale (maybe someone uses it, and it looks impressive) and a slightly wider angle (by the way, I liked it), but, as for me, to lose 140 for such a surcharge. mm on a lens with a claim to versatility is a controversial decision. There are situations when it is simply physically impossible to level 85 and 140 mm with your feet :) Here is a technical example:

      • Oleg

18 mm: two points on the horizon - sails

      • Oleg

140 mm: the surfers themselves (from the same place). Getting closer to them is quite difficult :) And such situations happen quite often

  • anonym

Tell me, please, if you compare 55-200 and 18-140, what would be the best option? need sharpness and focal zoom

    • lech

      of course 55-200

  • anonym

thank you very much . reassured)))

  • Alex

Greetings! I'm trying to find a replacement for 18-55VR on the D5100. The lens is needed for travel, a wide angle is often used. 18-55VR is not bad, the sharpness drop to 55 mm does not suit.
I read reviews, looked at 18-140 benchmark results on dpreview.com and dxomark.com, according to which 18-140 is sharper than 18-55VR at all comparable focal lengths. I tried 3 copies of 18-140, the result - my 18-55 copy is sharper than 18-140 on all comparable focal lengths except for 50 mm (here 18-140 has a clear advantage). Is it worth looking for a normal specimen 18-140 or is it just that
(mild in the range of 18-45)?

    • lech

do not look. here only 16-85mm will help you. detailing will give out in full, and an additional 2mm at the short end will not hurt.

    • Oleg

In one of the reviews on 18-140 I liked the phrase: “... if your photos at 18-140 are not sharp, then you are doing something wrong”. We can agree with this. Distortion on short focal lengths - yes, chromatitis - yes, vignette on an open aperture - yes (everything is easily corrected in ACR, there is a profile of this lens). But something, but just the sharpness of 18-140 is very, very, you just need to set the “correct” aperture for different focal lengths. There are no questions with detail either - if this lens was made for a 24 MP matrix, then 16.2 MP (like in the D5100) it will obviously master without question :) And for trips this is the same thing: +85 mm at the long end is usually preferable than +2 short :)))

      • Oleg

So, I found an 18 mm image (D5300, 18-140) with a large number of small details for a technical example (I don’t know, it’s true that with this reduction it will remain)

      • Oleg

And this is 140 mm (the left edge of the previous picture). The distance to the crane (focusing on the central point) is 3,5 km. Filmed without a tripod.

        • Nick12

Hello, and what settings were set?

      • Alex

Here are the full sizes on the D7000 (16.2 megapixels).

I'm more interested in the wide angle and here it is clearly worse than 18-55VR (VRII). In the examples at 18mm, the picture is as blue as with those copies that I managed to try.
All that remains is the new 16-80 (although also imperfect), but the price ... ..

        • Oleg

I smiled about the new 16-80 :))) Of course, light glass 16-80 f / 2,8-4E ED for 25K UAH should definitely be something better than dark 18-140 for 7K UAH :) But this is what the charm is 18-140, that for such a price (and with a good coverage of the focal) you can carry it with you on any trip, especially without shaking it, and get guaranteed good pictures. Yes, making money with this glass is quite difficult, but it is very, very good for amateur photography.
If we return from the price to the topic of a wide angle, then no matter how hard I tried, I did not see this “clearly worse” in comparison with 18-55VRII :)
I used to go to flickr to find out who shoots what and how. In due time they reviewed everything that was for 18-140 on different cameras. This is more interesting than synthetic sharpness tests, albeit subjectively - the photographer still controls the sharpness, not the lens :) And the question of ideal sharpness in itself is already very, very subjective (note, I still have not asked the main question, which was I initially have: why do we need superhuman sharpness at a wide angle, unless, of course, we are talking about commercial photography and printing posters? % increase). Well, no one has canceled post-processing of images yet: control the sharpness as you wish in LR, PS or ACR, if it is so critical.
Out of sports interest, it would probably be interesting to see two test shots from the “sharp” 18-55 and “soft” 18-140 under the same conditions on the same camera. I'm pretty sure it would be, at best, two nearly identical shots.
          PS
In general, the "passion for sharpness" eventually disappears for almost everyone :)

          • Denis

why then is 18-55 bad if you don’t like it so much?

            • Oleg

I mean bad? And where did you see that I do not like 18-55? Nonsense :) I will always like 18-55 if only for the fact that it was a whale lens on my first DSLR :)) Then I changed it to 18-105, then to 18-140 along with the camera.
Just Alex wrote (see above regarding the search for a replacement glass for the D5100) that he tested three 18-140 lenses and all of them turned out to be worse in sharpness at short focus than 18-55. Since I had experience using 18-55, I’ve rented recently for 18-140 and there have never been any questions with sharpness, so I allowed myself to doubt. That, in fact, is all.
In general, the essence of a long text is that happiness is not in harshness. It would be something to shoot)))

              • Denis

                understandably)

            • Alexey

in 18-55, a special element was removed for a long time, this is a plastic lens capable of giving a relatively sharp picture in the center at some focal lengths with certain aperture positions. and with super low price. in new models, the power button is beyond good and evil)))
everything else is mediocre to very bad. very poor microcontrast, in many modes and after 30mm - soap, dark, off scale CA and distortion. disgusting color.
its title - "plug" for a carcass - this lens deserves by right. what else to expect from a lens with a s / s of about $ 40?

              • Oleg

Well, the point is again to repost literally the "hot" polemic of 16.10.2015/18/55 :) Why torment 18-55 again? Everything about him is perfectly written in a separate review (and comments) exactly at XNUMX-XNUMX :))
The same topic is titled “Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical Review”. It will be more useful if here we objectively praise / disparage (underline the necessary) this particular glass :)))

  • Victor

I go to the link “All prices for Nikon 18-140” and the question arises: “WHY IS THIS DISTRIBUTION IN PRICES” ????

    • Lynx

both new and used prices are taken into account at flea markets

      • Victor

No, what boo? Follow the link at the end of the review. In one online store there are about 7 thousand hryvnyas, or even less, in another - 12 thousand hryvnias. And everyone sells new lenses !!! Price with a huge difference! And for a lens that exists in nature only in one version !!! The only difference is one: where the price is less - a 1 year warranty from the store, where it is more expensive - an official warranty from Nikon. Is the official guarantee almost half the price? ...

        • BB

The greed of sellers is the main criterion (and yes, the 'official guarantee' is always more expensive, according to my observations - by 20-30 percent).
And one more thing: often online stores artificially lower the price, and when you ask “where to pay”, it turns out that the price tag is 2-5-10-20% higher (due to the rise in the exchange rate, “it was an old purchase”, “not managed to change on the site ',' insurance ', or something else)

        • Lynx

firstly - Nikon's official guarantee, which means that the lens is official, not gray, not returned or repaired or something else.
Secondly - Internet shops are very fond of cheating with prices indicating less.

          • Victor

After calling 4 stores, I found out the following. The price indicated on the website is ACTUAL at the time of the call or differs slightly (no more than 10-30 UAH - daily fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate). This is the answer for uv. Lynx.
Further. Everyone answered the question of a lower price in the same way and approximately. There is a supplier who has most of the cameras in a kit. And someone orders a body-camera from him, someone wants to take one lens. For this, the kit is dismantled and sent in parts to different stores. And the lens will come to you only with a store guarantee and in a white package, and not in a proprietary Nokon's one, since it does not come in a whale version and there is nowhere to take it. Believe - not believe ???

            • Lynx

Well, I think all your questions will be answered only by a real purchase.
IMHO - to take 18-140 new as it does not really make sense. Boo is much more logical.

            • Oleg

Yes, that’s exactly what I bought, I confirm: an 18-140 lens in a white box, a D5300 carcass in a box where an 18-55 kit should have been. Dismantle under the order. And yes, with a store guarantee. And yes, at the appropriate price. So everything is true.

              • Alexey

lenses from whales are often sold, a white box. absolutely normal lenses)))
unless you can find them much cheaper than the lenses that are sold in the "boxed" version.

            • Oleg

Yes, and again: the seller’s price is clearly tied to the USD dynamics (indicate the rate directly on the site)

            • BB

It is very similar to the truth: I took a new D7100 carcass, and the box is large, it says “kit 18-105”, and there is room for it in the box.

    • lech

Do you want something like in the Soviet Union? in all 1/6 of the land one price.

      • Victor

And here is one price? Read carefully - the difference is almost two times in one country and one city (in this case, in Kiev). There must be some reasonable explanation for this. There would have been a difference of 1-2 thousand UAH. with an average of 11 thousand, no one would have raised the issue!

        • lech

sometimes something is stated on the Internet at a very cheap price. call, ask, but it turns out there is no.

          • Victor

Well, this is the carelessness of the store, not timely updating of the site, it happens ...

  • Alexander

I talked with the service technicians of Nikon. They claim that any nikon lens resolves a 24MP sensor. Ie. we select on fr and mtf. from budget lenses they recommend 18-140 or full-frame 24-120, etc. I myself choose a travel to 3300., I have not decided yet.

  • Lukas

Hello. I bought a D5500 carcass. Having read the reviews here. I chose between 24-120 f4 and 18-140 + 35 fix. chose 18-140 to start. the lens is sharp enough but dark, autofocus is working properly. heavy truth he weighs more than a carcass. I shoot mainly in the afternoon, for twilight and portraits I will buy a fix later.
Advise a flash. will the SB-700 be enough for me?

    • BB

Enough for most tasks, unless you're going to burst in a huge dark room at a low ISO.

      • Lukas

Thank you, there’s no need to beat in lots. Photography is still an expensive hobby, no more.
I noticed that the aperture ratio of 18-140 is clearly not enough. but on the street during the day it's generally fine.

  • Sergei

I was going to buy a Nikon 5300, it is with a whale lens 18-55 mm. 18-105 mm. and 18-140 mm. and now I don’t know which lens is better to take. Tell me about the lenses of 18-105 mm. and 18-140 mm. how they are characterized as portraits, as wide-angle lenses, as telephoto lenses, or as macro lenses. The trouble is that when I decided to buy such a camera for myself, then none of the sellers really can say anything by lenses that this is the golden mean, that is, as a portrait, a wide-angle telephoto lens and a macro lens. Is it really? And another question is which of the whale lenses is 18-105 mm. 18-140 mm. It’s best to shoot a home video and what the 18-55 mm whale lens is for. I will be very grateful for the characteristics of these three lenses and the Nikon D5300 camera itself. Sincerely, Sergey.

    • Lynx

They are characterized as “generalists”. take 140, it is still better than all three.

    • Jury

In addition to the difference in focal length range, the 18-55 has less distortion at wide angle, so it can be said to be more suitable for landscapes and any genre where wide angle is more in demand. For portraits, in my opinion, they are all so-so - the bokeh is dull, and the low aperture does not allow blurring the background well when shooting at full height.
If you compare 18-105 and 18-140, then the second is much better.
18-55 is interesting for compactness, less distortion at the short end and the lowest price.

      • Basil

from the subjective - on the whale 18-55, it seems to me, the glasses are worse. Sharpness is lower and the whole picture is more noisy (at the same ISO)

        • Jury

For 18-55, a spread in quality is characteristic. on photo.ru sometimes people post frames from 18-55 are quite decent in sharpness. Of course, undercover.

  • Valery

on nikon 3100 used indoors at the short end, aberrations disappear on the diaphragm 5,6, in nature I use f 35 -1,8

  • lech

    Such an interesting blur.

    • anonym

I’m embarrassed to ask, what’s interesting here?

  • anonym

Nikon d 5100tushka and lens 18-140 bought as the main one, the lens is good., I will not sell)))

  • villi

tell me if the objectiv 18-140 will fit for nikon d5300, since I really want to buy it ... ..

    • Valery A.

So it was developed for such cameras (and marketing - they will cut some money).

  • Valery

I bought it from the availability of funds, of course, it is not a fix in terms of sharpness, but the presence of 18 - 140 is sometimes necessary. I like.

    • ssirman

In terms of color 18-140 and saturation, of course, dull, cruel, wooden. Even kit 18-55 is even more interesting in this regard.

  • Victor

Hello Arkady! Tell me, for easy use and shooting (nature, sea, forest, etc.) Nikkon 7100 camera which lens is better to get: 18-105 mm or even 18-140 mm? Which of them is more modern today? Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      18-140 new

      • Oksana

        need help)
I can not choose a lens
        Choice between
        Sigma 17-70 mm f2,8-4,5
        И
        Nikkor 18-200 mm f1: 3.5-5.6G
        Or
SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM
I select for Nikon 5100, there is a kit 18-55, the quality of photography and the functionality of which to choose! I understand that the first aperture, and 18-200 universal, maybe better 18-140?

        • Denis

          not so 17-70 f2,8-4,5 and fast ... take 18-140

  • Denis

Guys need advice on how to focus in manual mode without marking the distances on the 18-140 lens, for example, wind up infinity to take pictures of stars, or a night landscape, in general, in cases where autofocus does not work? The ring scrolls, and even during the day, photographing the landscape, it is hard to catch focus in the viewfinder! And in general, is it normal that the ring scrolls by clicking in a certain place?

    • Valery A.

And you have not tried to navigate by the focus confirmation sensor (green circle at the bottom left in the OVI). If the selected focus point is in focus when the focus ring is rotated (you can catch the star as well), the circle appears. Nikons.

      • Denis

I’ll try thanks, and what is really so focused on the black sky? I wonder how it works in total darkness !? Well, in the portrait, it’s clear what prompts but did not try in the dark)

        • Valery A.

The focus sensor will not be able to catch a clear sky or darkness, incl. in the manual, you need something contrasting - a star or a cloud, in your case also a landscape during the day.

    • lech

The ring scrolls is normal. Autofocus does not work during the day, it’s not normal anymore. At night, it should focus on the moon without any problems, this will be infinity. There should be no clicks, only slight resistance. In light twilight, autofocus still works, no longer.

    • anonym

Denis, I shot stars with 5100 with this glass: I focused on a bright star (having previously summed up) with autofocus, then switched from AF to MF and everything was normal.
