Review Nikon 18-140mm VR

Nikon 18-140mm VR was introduced in the summer of 2013 as a replacement for the obsolete Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Asphericalreleased back in 2006. I suspect the 140mm focal length was dictated by the need to accurately distinguish the new '18 -140 VR 'from the old '18 -135', which turned out to be not the most popular lens.

Main technical characteristics of Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical:

It is interesting to note that the Nikon 18-140mm VR only has one aspherical element in its optical design, while the old Nikon 18-135 has two. You can view and compare optical schemes in the section about 'Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses'.

Since the Nikon 18-140mm VR has a built-in focus motor, it is perfect for any Nikon DX class camera. The lens itself can act as “lens for all occasions“. True, for versatility you will have to pay low aperture.

Autofocus speed is average, almost exactly the same as that of Nikon 18-200mm GII VR, Nikon 18-200VR, Nikon 18-300 / 3.5-5.6 VR, Nikon 18-300 / 3.5-6.3 VR, Nikon 18-135 и Nikon 18-105VR, if we compare the focusing time from infinity to MDF and vice versa (analysis can be carried out on video from the network). Of all the Nikon DX zoom lenses, it only focuses noticeably faster Nikon 16-85VR, Nikon 17-55 и Nikon 18-70. Funny but even the simplest lenses Nikon 18-55G, 18-55GI, 18-55 VR, 18-55VRII still focus a little faster than Nikon 18-140mm VR.

The autofocus speed at 18 mm focal length is slightly faster than 140 mm. A decrease in the auto focus speed with an increase in the focal length is common to almost all super-zooms Nikon DX.

The lens has internal focusing, which makes it possible to use light filters without any problems. The front lens also does not rotate when zooming. But the rear lens moves when zooming and creates the effect of a “vacuum cleaner”. The zoom ring is rubberized, wide and easy to operate.

The minimum focusing distance is only 45 см. This is a very good indicator for super-zoom, and allows you to shoot objects close-up, with a magnification of approximately 1: 4.3.

The lens has a 'A-M' focus mode switch, exactly the same as previous lenses: Nikon 18-135 и Nikon 18-105VR. Sorry but the lens does not support continuous manual focus control Nikon M / A.

The 'A-M' switch in this lens is non-standard. Normally, in all lenses equipped with such switches, manual focus cannot be performed in 'A' mode. But here is what the manual says for Nikon 18-140mm f / 3.5-5.6G:

Manual focus can be performed even if the AM lens mode is set to A. Set the camera to focus on AF-S and press the shutter-release button halfway to autofocus. Then, while holding the shutter-release button halfway, manually rotate the lens focus ring to fine-tune the focus. Note. Do not try to rotate the focus ring while the autofocus function is operating. When the autofocus function completes, release and press the shutter-release button halfway again.

Thus, in AF-S mode, after successful focusing, you can still rotate the focus ring to adjust the focus or refocus it. Unfortunately, such a property is only a miserable semblance of a full-fledged regime M / AM with the possibility of constant manual focus control.

You can find more information about lenses with a similar feature in the section Focus Features 'A', for some Nikkor lenses with the 'A-M' switch.

It's a pity, but, unlike more advanced lenses, Nikon 18-140mm VR, apart from focal length markers, does not have any useful designations, such as focusing distance or depth of field.

Made lens in Thailand. There are no complaints about the assembly. Very good, which, unlike Nikon 18-105VR и Nikon 18-135The new lens has a metal mount. The lens from this review is new, and therefore I have not yet observed a spontaneous loss of a trunk under its own weight, perhaps such an ailment will never occur in the lens. But still, a small drawback is the lack of a hood in the package, which will have to be purchased separately. Nikon 18-140mm VR uses the HB-32 lens hood exactly the same Nikon 18-105VR, Nikon 18-70 и Nikon 18-135.

The lens has a built-in image stabilizer and a dedicated 'VR ON OFF' switch to turn it on and off. The stabilizer works fine, I have no problem took off without grease at shutter speeds of 1/60 second and 140 mm of focal length. When turning on and off, the stabilizer emits quiet clicks.

Nikon 18-140mm VR tried to do well, it has good sharpness, but chromatic aberration is not so good. The lens noticeably suffers from distortion (especially at 18mm, the gallery has examples of photos with curved walls) and vignetting on open apertures. In backlight, it can easily catch glare. I did not find anything outstanding or serious flaws in the lens.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D80 using protective filter fox Digital SC UV 67mm. On camera JPEG L fine without treatment, reduced size to 3 MP. Everything was shot in N (Neutral) Picture Control. Noise reduction function is disabled at slow shutter speeds, noise reduction function at high values ISO - 'Norm' or 'Off'.

In my opinion, the Nikon 18-140mm VR can be a worthy replacement for staff members from the category 18-55 / 3,5-5,6, but change to it Nikon 18-105mm VR I don’t see the point. Yes, and the newcomer is still a little expensive. The advent of Nikon 18-140mm VR can satisfy those who need focal length Nikon 18-105mm VR 'few', and Nikon 18-200mm VR - roads. I almost never met Nikon 18-140mm VR as a complete lens for modern cameras and I think that it is much more profitable to buy a kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR... My rating of stock Nikon DX zoom can be found in the 'Choosing a Nikon Camera and Lens'.

in my opinion, quite so objective lens)

  • Vladimir

Hello. I have one question for this article. Whose cat is in one of the pictures? And this time, your lady turned out to be especially mysterious (although, in other pictures, she is no less beautiful). Here. And again: Arkady, thank you for this site, I read with interest.

    • Arkady Shapoval

We found a cat (or cat) while we were going to the location for shooting.

      • Vladimir

Arkady, you constantly praise NIKON 18-200. Of course, on your ancient NIKON D80 it is good (10 megapixels). However, modern matrixes in 16-24 megapixels IT DOES NOT PERFECTLY. I wanted to buy it 3 years ago for the NIKON D7000, I took it from a friend and I was frankly disappointed. And the friend also has NIKON D80, and on it he is beautiful. So, you are more careful with tips. Now compared to NIKON 18-105. NIKON 18-140 MUCH MORE, MUCH MORE, especially on the long range. I am writing this not unfounded, because 18 pieces went through my hands through 105-8 lenses, and only one lingered on my NIKON D3100 camera, and compared it with 18-140 very tightly. But your photos are interesting and with good color.

        • Oleg

Now compared to NIKON 18-105. NIKON 18-140 MUCH MUCHER MUCH. Vladimir, a question for you. More sharply who is 18-105 or 18-140?

          • anonym

            Yeah, let’s guess, you’re a robot. )

        • Konstantin

I completely agree with Vladimir on November 17.11.2014, 18. The advantage of the Nikkor 140-24,2mm, compared with its competitors, is clearly visible on the 80 megapixels. The difference in sharpness and detail is hard to miss! It surprised me very much. On matrices with lower resolution, for example on the Nikon D10,2 with its 18 MP, there is generally no visible difference between the Nikkor 105-18 and 140-5300, and my Nikon D24,2 with XNUMX MP gives a completely different result.
I think that when testing modern optics of a new generation, you need to use different equipment with different matrices in order to get objective results.

        • Sergei

No need to offend 18-200. I now have 18-200 and 18-140 - there is no stupid difference in sharpness! But the 18-200 has an extra 60 mm (just extra) and a very steep stub, unlike the 18-140. The test was carried out on the D5300 and D7200 - both 24 megapixels. But I noticed that the D5300 suffers from underexposure and sharpness, but this is no longer relevant

  • Denis

Arkady, constantly in the reviews of lenses I cling to the phrase "Everything was shot on ... using a protective filter ...". I think lenses like 18-105, 18-140 and the like get a little blinded by protective filters. As soon as I removed the protective HOYA from my 18-105, I immediately noticed an improvement in autofocusing, and an increase in sharpness, and in general the picture became more pleasant in colors, more contrast. Perhaps 77mm filters, designed for professional lenses, do not interfere with the process so much and there they can not be removed.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Filters in reviews of users who submitted them for the test. I do not remove the filters, so as not to accidentally dirty the "new" lenses.

    • d.martyn

About the filters I want to say (sorry, that is not the topic). Even UV filters, not to mention the polarizers, are best taken from high-quality ones, so that there would be no loss in contrast and focus, and frankly unpretentious generally often hang additional hares. I recommend Heliopan, Rodenstock, Schneider B + W, Zeiss, believe me, you will never notice anything like this with them, but Hoya, Tiffen, Marumi, Kenko are perhaps the most common and affordable, but it’s difficult to reach them. And yet, in such an element as a filter, the presence of enlightenment, and preferably not a single layer, is very important. I know about all the above not by hearsay.

    • Do_Oraemon

Yes you stop. The magic directly happened as soon as the filter was removed. Yeah. How many I rent with filters (there were all kinds: frank cheap and expensive) I never noticed such nonsense. Sometimes, however, some add a parasitic hue, but this is easily eliminated in the editor. But it’s extremely rare to clean the lenses of the lens. And believe me: the constant wiping of the antireflection coating on the lenses never improves the characteristics of the lens. Buy a filter with enlightenment and you will be happy: both contrast and color. And even better - shoot in regime time. And then you can do even with a cheap filter.

      • Sergei

        + 100 %
tested with different filters, there is no difference up to an increase of 2: 1.
no longer increased because there is no point :)

        • BB

Affects only in the backlight. Cheap ones glare much more (the “visibility” of a glare is 2-3 times more on a cheap one). In normal lighting, even the cheapest filter almost does not spoil the quality (if it is clean, of course).

    • Vladimir

HOYA is one of the best filters, it doesn't spoil the picture, I also had such a "glitch". It's just that the lens itself doesn't pull the matrix, that's the whole problem. Or you ran into a left filter without enlightenment (I observed the same thing with a cheap filter. And now I have HOYA UVC MULTI COATED, everything is in order.

  • Sashko

    > Nikon 18-140mm VR uses the HB-32 hood, which is exactly the same as the Nikon 18-105 VR and Nikon 18-135.
give me Nikon 18-70 (win tezh Vikoristovє HB-32 blend)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Added by. Thanks.

  • Valery

    Good review !!!

  • Victor

I have been using this lens for 2 months, there are no differences from 18-105, only focus ones. With filters, they really have lower quality photos.
By the way, I bought 12900 Russian rubles at Sotmarket.
But the feeling about 18-105 is much nicer, like the new model in June 2013, cool. But the pictures on the focal 80-100 are just the same.
Thanks Arkady for the reviews, for me as a beginner it’s just a gift.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

    Good afternoon.
If we compare 18-105mm and 18-140mm exclusively in terms of picture quality, will they be the same?
You wrote that 18-105 is noticeably soft on 18mm. for 18-140 is this also characteristic?

  • Sergei

18-140 is a good budget zoom. now its price in the whale has dropped to $ 200-300 - black Friday however! ;)

    • Natalia

A couple of weeks ago I bought this lens in China for 10 thousand rubles. I am very satisfied. Before that there was Tamron 18 - 200 - absolutely not a sharp lens, without a stabilizer, I suffered with it. Even if the focal range is smaller, but the picture is much better.

  • Anatoliy

Good afternoon, I found this lens bundled with a nikon d5100 camera, the price is about 25000, although this camera with a standard 18-55 costs about 19000, so I think it's worth taking ...

    • Lynx

depends on the tasks. Everything STRONGLY depends on the tasks.

  • Alexander

I bought this lens complete with Nikon-5100 (in a connected-24500r.)! The picture is good. A bit dark in the room - but with the SB-700 the problems disappear. I use this unit for several days, I'm happy as an elephant. before this year was nikon-3100 with a whale 18-55 which I sold and do not regret it!

  • Alexander

Thank you very much for the reviews to the author! really helped me with choosing another SLR and lens!

  • Anatoliy

    I bought d90, while I can’t judge,))) but I like Fotik Pts a little

    • willow

Anatoly! Also eyeing the d90 here is a dilemma or the 90th or 5100?

      • Lynx

I repeat once again - it all depends on the tasks and planned use.

        • Alexander

Yes, nothing depends on any tasks…. It all depends on the wallet…. An acquaintance of mine with a good wallet bought D4 and sometimes snaps a cat and flowers in the field for them, but he himself knows nothing more than the power button and the release button…. He doesn’t even have a clue what ISO is… And he said, “I want to take a photo of a cat with a camera once a month….

  • Andrei

Hello! Happy New Year! I am eyeing the “station wagon.” Nikon 18-105 - Nikon 18-140 - Tamron 18-200. Your advice - which one will be better (willing to sacrifice the focal range if it's worth it). PS - read the reviews, and yet your opinion?

  • Ivan

Arkady, your review has zero information content. I think you also understand that testing a lens on a camera that does not reveal its capabilities is pointless. Your, apparently, specially spoiled photo examples (after all, you do not shoot with a faulty device) can disorient and alienate potential buyers. The D80 is a much better camera and even with its whale camera (Nikkor 18-135) allows you to get a photo of much better quality. Your very superficial “literary creation” of recent times makes me suspicious of a bias in the approach in the reviews.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Your opinion is important, I would be glad if I wrote sensible comments on the review, maybe somewhere there is an inaccuracy, and maybe a mistake at all? As a result, in the comments I heard only thoughts about the d80.

  • anonym

I apologize for some sharpness and may be incorrect, but now, when I am interested in this lens due to very conflicting assessments and examples. Your positive ratings should be assumed from testing on the D80, which is absolutely irrelevant today, completely refuted by examples of photos, in which there is neither normal color, nor sharpness, nor resolution (m. from the used filter). Considering all the information available on the Internet, I can’t understand how good this lens is for its price. Good reviews and examples of regular testers are very different from mediocre snapshots of real owners.
    Information on http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=665&Camera=614&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=916&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0
just seems weird. I would not like you to perceive my writing as an "attack" on you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. Modern cameras, for example, take the D5300, are able to correct lens distortion, because they simply show the processed image by the camera processor, and not the result of the lens.
      2. Photos in the review without processing with zero sharpening, etc. (this is indicated in the review), which of course, differs from the bright colors of modern cameras.
      3. My experience allows me to clearly understand that laboratory tests, for example, the world to which the link was sent, ultimately very weakly show the complex operation of the lens in real conditions.
      3. For that matter, then half the work http://www.photozone.de/ You can choose, because they tested the optics on the same old 10-megapixel Nikon D200. Actually, I understand that 10MP and 24MP new cameras will give a different picture due to the different pixel size and everything related to this. But unfortunately, how to retest the same lens on all Nikon cameras? Therefore, you have to think up an amendment for use with different cameras.

  • Ivan

In the last post, I forgot to provide a name. Despite the very insufficient information on this lens, m. It is precisely because of this that I had a suspicion that under the Nikkor 18-140VR brand, lenses of very different optical qualities are sold. A huge variation in prices among sellers (almost 2 times) reinforces these suspicions.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I suspect that the spread in prices is due to the fact that this is a relatively new lens, and many can easily overcharge it. Nikon itself produces only one 18-140, maybe you are confused by different names with different numbers of consoles. For example, in the review I call him Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical, because it is written on the case itself, on the very official Nikon website it is referred to as AF-S DX NIKKOR 18 -140mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR, and with the names in online stores in general there is hell. As it is written in my review, this is a pretty brand new whale lens, an 18-135 replacement that many did not like, but no more.

  • Skai

Arkady, thanks for the review, I would like to add that auto-correction of distortion appeared for him only in Lightrom 5.3 in 5.2 there was no profile ... Naturally, Nikon's native software supports glass without problems.
Do not consider it arrogant yet, I would like in the captions to the photo a minimal legend of lighting (in particular, how the flash was and in what mode it worked (reflection from something, an umbrella, or direct light) ... It is very lacking, since you notice little experience only the direction backlights and all :-(
The second day I own this lens, unusually dark after 35 1,8 but the wide angle and zoom are worth it! PS: tomorrow is the first exit to the forest, let's see how he behaves in the cold ...
ZZY: The price has already come close to 300 dollars, although it is also found at 450 O_o
ZZY: 14 I especially liked the photo, it is directly mesmerizing :-)

  • Vladimir Sychev

Good afternoon. I recently took pictures with this lens (a friend bought it). The impressions are neutral, the far plan is soapy, it's not bad near, there is some boke. Just recently, just a week ago (after 2 years of searching), I finally found a sharp, correct NIKON 18-105VR. So the picture from him, according to my feelings, is more pleasant than from this 18-140. Correctly Arkady wrote, if the additional 35 mm focal length is not important and you have a decent copy of the 18-105 - just shoot them. And the metal mount will not add to your photo quality. For high-quality photos, there are lenses with real optics. For everyday travel tasks 18-140 and 18-105 berries of the same field, moderately sharp, moderately colorful. But 18-105 can be bought on the secondary housing almost new for 5-6 thousand rubles (already with a hood, I note). 8 pieces 18-105 have passed through my hands, and now I can say for sure that he is good on matrices up to 12-14 megapixels, 16 megapixels is already too heavy for him, I don't know what is going on at 24 megapixels. Maybe this is one of the advantages of the new 18-140, maybe it has a higher resolution, so far no one has found instrumental tests.

    • Anna

What lens would you recommend for Nikon D3200? (we only take amateur pictures with the camera ... we are new to this business)

    • BB

Apparently, I came across a good copy of the 18-105: I could easily pull 16MP on the D5100. When I bought the D7100, I thought it wouldn't be enough. I tested it - and the glass is quite capable of 24MP. Yes, there is no prohibitive sharpness, but if you slightly cover the aperture, it is quite suitable Universal glass. I think to replace it with 18-140: sometimes two station wagons are needed, and 18-105 is already more than 100K frames, suffers from a trunk runaway. Will be the second / spare.

  • Konstantin

Please help with advice. Bought this lens. D7000 carcass. Found the problem. The further the subject is, the more soapy. And at any focal length and at any aperture. Sharp photos come out only when shooting an object at a distance of up to 3 meters - then CREEPY soap. On fixes 35 f / 1.8, 50 f / 1.8, as well as on the kit 18-55, this is not observed.

What could be the problem? Poor instance?

I also have such a lens and a 7000 carcass. There have never been any such problems. Checked the lens before buying? Either a replacement or a service, but without seeing the photo, it's hard to say something.

"But still, it's not a big drawback ..." - in this case, "small" is written together.

Most recently, I saw this lens in the kit, either with 5300, or with 7100.

When you have about five layouts on the keyboard, then you'll be smart ...
(PS for those who do not know: on the keyboard in the Russian layout, the letter E is on the same key as in Ukrainian Є)

Good afternoon. I live on your resource. I was going to take the d7100, I puzzle over the choice of a regular lens. I rush between 18-140 and 16-85. The first has more options for portraiture, the second has a more advanced design, and a more reliable construct. Again, the ergonomics of 16-85 are better. Help decide. Experience shooting only on a whale.

I have the same dilemma. But all the same I am inclined to 18-140, it is new, more universal, and cheaper by one and a half times.

I have d7100, which I bought together with 18-105. After using fix 50 1.8 and 35 1.8, I didn't want to shoot 18-105 anymore and it was successfully sold. However, after several trips to nature and on vacation, I again realized that the zoom is still needed. For this reason, I bought 18-140, which won over with its novelty and…. Several shots immediately showed a significant improvement in the quality of images, especially the detail of landscapes increased, the picture is juicy. I would recommend the d7100 share with its 24 mp 18-140.

    "I have d7100"
The camera does not need to have. The camera must be removed.
