Review Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) lens A17 from this review has a Nikon F mount and is suitable for all Nikon digital SLR cameras, including full-format cameras and cameras without a focus motor. Please note that there is earlier lens model - Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD Macro model 572D and model 772D. Versions 572D and 772D differ only in body color, the first is black, the second is silver. There is also a later model that has an image stabilizer and an ultrasonic motor - Tamron SP AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Di VC USD Model A005.

View of the Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 lens focused on MDF at 300mm focal length.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is available for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony cameras, when buying, be careful to take a model with the same mount as your camera .

Examples of photos on the option of the lens for Pentax mount can be found in the camera review Pentax K-S2.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6, as for telephoto, is a very light lens, its weight is a little more than 400 grams. The lens was made in China, the assembly is not bad, but still in the hands of Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 it feels like a cheap toy. But the lens has a metal bayonet mount and a plastic hood, which comes in a box with the lens. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried, though in this position it blocks access to the focus ring, but access to the zoom ring remains open.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 with a hood clad back to front.

Sorry, but Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 has very slow focus. To achieve fast focus does not even help focus stop 'Normal / Marco 180-300'. You can turn on the 'Macro' mode only when the zoom position is between 180 and 300mm, and turn it off only when the lens is focused more than 1.5 meters. This use of the switch is not very convenient, especially when you need to quickly exit the macro mode.

At 'Macro 180-300' the focusing becomes monstrously slow. When the limiter is set to 'Normal', the lens will focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. In the 'Macro' position, the minimum focusing distance expands to only 0.95 meters, while you can shoot macro at 2: 1 magnification, which is a really good indicator for a budget 'dark' lens.

The lens has an aperture with 9 petals, which can close to F / 32 at 70mm and up to F / 45 at 300mm. When zooming, the rear lens of the lens moves and creates the effect of a vacuum cleaner, which does not affect the cleanliness of the mirror and matrix compartment): Also, the zoom ring goes very tight in extreme positions, I could not rotate the zoom ring smoothly, without jerking.

The focus ring is rubberized as well as the zoom ring and rotates 90 degrees in the 'Normal' position and 180 degrees in the 'Macro' position. Manual focusing in the 'Normal' position is not very convenient due to the small travel of the focusing ring. The lens makes a lot of noise during autofocus. It is also a pity that when focusing, the front lens rotates and goes forwarduse Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 s polarizing filter it will be difficult. The diameter of the front filter is small - only 62mm, I advise you to immediately put on the lens any inexpensive protective filter.

Attention: the lens has an MF / AF focusing mode switch, for manual focusing, be sure to set this switch to MF (Manual Focusing) position, otherwise the built-in motor may be damaged.

The most interesting thing is that, despite a number of its shortcomings, Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 optically turned out to be a pretty nice lens. It more or less normally copes with backlight and has not the worst sharpness and weak distortion. On closed apertures on my full-size camera Nikon D700 the lens produces quite normal image quality. Of the shortcomings - noticeable chromatic aberration and sharpening at extreme aperture and focal lengths. In general, the image quality is quite suitable for simple photo tasks.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using a hood. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression), no processing. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - from 5 to 9. Used white balance: 'Shadow', 'Sunny', 'Overcast', 'Auto'. The photo size has been reduced to 3 MP. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will match the range 105-450mm.

Conclusions:

The Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is a very cheap zoom lens. Slow focusing is a serious drawback. I think the lens has a good price / quality ratio. With such a lens on a sunny day, you can take pictures of birds and animals, and just shoot for your own pleasure - the main thing is to get used take off.

If the store has 10 Tamron with the same inscription in the store, then this is actually 10 DIFFERENT Tamron :)

  • Vladimir

Arkady, hello! Thanks for the site! Question. Will this lens reveal itself with the Nikon D800? I wanted to take him for the first time as a portrait photographer for a studio (working with flashes - there will be enough light). Or is it better to dig up and take a high-aperture fix 85 or 105?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good day. 85 or 105 will be definitely better. The potential of the lens reveals the photographer, not the camera. If you want to get pixel-by-pixel sharpness (this is what most often means unleashing the potential), then you will have to try hard with Tamron.

      • Vladimir

Arkady, thank you very much! It was the sharpness that interested me. Then I will take a fast fix. Thanks again!

      • Dmitry

Hmm, on my d3200 this lens almost always gives per-pixel sharpness on a closed aperture. And the d800 seems to have a smaller pixel density.

        • B. R. P.

On the D3100, it does not really give out. Especially on long focal lengths. That's strange)

  • Vladimir

Arkady, hello! Again I am asking you a question. Which lens will perform better in the full frame: Tamron 70-300mm F / 4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro or Tamron AF 28-200 mm f / 3.8-5.6 Aspherical LD IF 171D? There will be a lot of light (flashes in the studio), shooting portraits at a focal length of 90-135 mm. Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

With telephoto, the picture will be better. But it’s better to take something more serious.

      • Vladimir

Arkady, thank you! God bless you for your help to all the photographers who read you and who turn to you for advice!

  • Valentine

Hello. Please tell me the teleconverter for this lens on the D90. Hire birds. Usually Sigma, but now Sigma is stuck in repair for an indefinite period. As an interim measure, this lens was purchased and, of course, a number of claims arose for it. Is it advisable to use it with a teleconverter? And if so, which one would you recommend?

    Thank you!

  • Dmitriy

Please tell me, is this lens suitable for shooting equestrian competitions? If not, please tell me which telephoto zoom lens is suitable. thanks

    • Dmitriy

      Nikon d90 camera

    • KalekseyG

Well, if the subject is constantly in the frame, then it will go. Focusing is really slow, but the main problem is that if the object is not in focus at all, then it first crawls to the MDF and then back again for a total of 2 lost seconds.

      • Dmitriy

Clearly understood. Which television set to choose for equestrian competitions?

  • a lion

"For full-frame and for cameras without a focus motor" No, neither for full-frame nor for medium-format cameras the lens will not work. Only for, God forgive me, small format (full frame) and half format (crop). Sorry.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Leo, hello. I understand your indignation, most likely you are a good expert in technology, and full-frame cameras, most likely, are some kind of misunderstanding among small-format creatures for you. But in our digital time, the concept of full-frame and full-frame, referring to the size of sensors in modern cameras, as it happens, have become almost synonymous. Technically, “full-frame” and “full-frame” cameras are different, but only true experts know this. I will try to correct this terrible sin and use more correct terms so that the old connoisseurs do not get lost.

      • Stas

I don’t understand something. On Nikon d5200, what will the photo frame look like - cropping, vignette, etc.?
or all the same as usual for other crop lenses, those. according to normal.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Everything will be fine.

  • Karina

Good day. Tell me, please. I sold Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC USD A005NII (used) and looked at the Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD DI Macro store, I want to buy a d5100 for Nikon. It seems to be looking, it seems that the lenses are the same. Or am I confusing something?

  • Alexander S.

    Good afternoon.
    There is a D40 + Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 standard +
    Yongnuo 50 / 1.8 + U37A. 95% missing.
But sometimes in nature, children shoot or at all kinds of competitions and performances (including indoors) something more genuine and necessary.
I don't see any serious reason to take something, from the budget I liked either nikon 55-200 vr2 or the hero of the review. Nikon has more convenient focal points and stubs, Tamron has 300mm and in the future it can be used on ff (as the price tag for 750 will stop scaring the toad). For the price they are equivalent.
The first vr was exactly losing the tamron, but what about the second case on the same focal ?.

What do you advise, maybe there are still alternatives up to $ 100?

    • anonym

Good 55-200 is not needed, there are fixes. Yu-37 is not particularly shorter than 200. But the tamron is not particularly for events, very slow. Only in bright light can you work with it or high iso, which is not in the D40. I like it outdoors during the day, but if you have slow-moving objects, I prefer to take my Nikon 100-300 / 5.6

      • Valery A.

Hello. I had a 55-200VR, I remember fondly - small, light, but with its playfulness - a decent quality of work. Application - in the courtyard (outdoors) the object should be brought closer (the same children), the front-bust portrait (no complaints), the body - birds, airplanes (probably not like the Ju-37, having AF, VR and 200mm, by the way, I can't imagine shooting with a telephoto lens without VR, unless you carry a tripod with you) and also some macro: on MDF 1,1m dragonflies, etc. take off. I changed it to 55-300, then the N.70-300VR turned up, like telephoto they are more serious, but weight-size-price ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

It is better to add and take a little Sigma 70-300 OS, they used. not expensive, and with a stabilizer.

      • Andrei

I thank you for the answer and advice)) Now I will try to share the info on it)

  • Irina

    Good day)).
Tell me please. Will the machine work. focus, if you put the Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 Macro (1: 2) lens on the Nikon D5200? Thank you in advance for your response.

    • anonym

      The review is written.

      • Valery A.

It is written that it will be, but it is better to clarify with the seller - there is not one such model, but the designation of the motor in the name of the tamron either writes or does not. It doesn't.

  • Firear

    Health to all!
Arkady, thank you for the reviews. I was looking for cheap versions of Sigma and Tamron, but both reviews on them made me doubt. Now I don’t know what zoom to choose for my Nikon D 90! There is no money for the expensive, but both cheap ones did not please ... 😞

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Look at Sigma 70-300OS.

    • anonym

Yes, in principle, a normal lens, just slow.

      • Valery A.

Inexpensive telezoom with a stub - Nikon 55-300 from hand.

  • anonym

Bought in excellent condition for 1300 UAH. I think it's just the best purchase of the year) I will test and unsubscribe. First impressions are purely positive!

  • DM

How will it be compared to Nikon 70-210 4-5,6D at full frame?

  • Ilya

I bought it a few years ago for a minimal amount to see if I need a telephoto lens. Shooting with Canon 70D. Yes, the focusing speed is creepy, but I'm used to the picture and I even like it. I mainly shoot airplanes with it - I set the aperture around 8-11 and turn off autofocus.
On the open aperture, the picture is soft, but not soapy.
I wanted to change something with USM, but I still haven't changed it.
In my copy, there is a common Tamron jamb - the loop is buggy. But at what point this happens, I figured out and try not to bring it to that.

  • Andrei

Zdraviya, Arkady! Tell me, please, according to my situation. Recently got hold of Sony A7 II. There is whale glass and a fixed 1,4 35. I want to add a telephoto. Native Sonievsky bite at a price (looked 70-200, 70-300) This Nikonovsky is amazing at a price (it’s true that you have to fork out for the adapter). What do you think will be the combination of this glass with my camera? Should I bother? It can still strain for the price. I don’t have any special tasks, I’m not a pro, but I want to have good quality. Thank you)

    • B. R. P.

And how are you going to control the diaphragm on Sony?

  • anonym

Good day! Please tell me for the Nikon D3200 DSLR which brand of lens is suitable? Which lens is better to take? Thanks!

Arkady hello. Tamron LD DI AF lens 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 zoom ring is blocked in the region of 200mm ie does not go to 300mm? what could be the problem? the same thing in macro mode.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s hard to tell. Macro switch shifted? Maybe just a breakdown of the guides

      • Jury

yes shifted. Yes, and the trunk when zooming does not go to the end

  • Leonid.

You need 300 mm, which is better Canon EF 70-300mm f / 4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens or Tamron AF 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens. I understand that these are not the best.

    • Michael

Canon will be more comfortable. If there really is a stub (IS)

  • notapic

I had a chance to shoot once with this glass in conjunction with Nikon D3500. This was the first time with him and I hope that this lens design error will never fall into my hands again. AF is very slow, lathers heavily beyond 150 mm, there is software for 250-300. The macro mode is unsuccessfully implemented, the body is toy, the trunk is backlash. Of the advantages - quite accurate focusing, cheapness (suitable for buying, disappointing and selling / throwing away), lightness - an excellent portable ashtray with a lens function. 2/10

    • Stas

Is this Tamron worse in quality than Nikkor 18-105 kit?

      • B. R. P.

In my opinion, 18-105 is better in sharpness, but these are very different lenses: Nikkor is a standard zoom from a wide angle to a small telephoto, Tamron is a telezoom, with it you will not have a wide angle at all. In terms of speed, af Nikkor is much faster.

  • 111

Tell me who knows the specialist in repairing this lens in Kharkov, autofocus has stopped working.

  • Stas

    Hello colleagues.
Tell me with advice that this one, considered in the article Tamron or Nikkor 18-105 kit on Nikon 5200, is better?
Serious difference to make a replacement?

    • Oleg

The difference in focal points is too obvious to be considered as a replacement, not an addition.

  • Mirina

Hello. Can you please tell me I have a Canon 1100d camera, I want to buy a lens for it, order it via the Internet. Will Canon TAMRON AF LD Lens Fit

    • Victor

      Suitable for Canon version.

But I strongly recommend that you change your mind and take any version of canon 55-250 instead.

      • Mirina

Thank you so much. Then I will search.

Hola pregunto si por si el objetivo tamron 70-300mm f4 . 0.5.6 ld di af le sirve a la cámara nikkor Nikon D5200

    • B. R. P.

Si, este objetivo Tamron LD DI AF 70-300 mm 1:4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1:2) A17 funcionará con su cámara.

  • Vladimir.

Hello, Arkady! I always read your reviews on photographic equipment with interest. I began to look at the pictures you took with this Tamron and D700 and noticed that the photos of the cats (2nd and 4th) were taken with a large ISO (1800 and 3200, respectively). At the same time exposure compensation -0,67. And on the 7th photo (flowers) the exposure compensation is generally -1 at ISO 900. Wouldn't it be better to set the correction to 0 and reduce the ISO?

    • Arkady Shapoval

the question is the efficiency of maneuvers exposure parameters

    • Viktre

It is not entirely clear what you wanted to achieve by setting the correction to zero and reducing the iso: in the photo with 300mm colors 1/400, we remove the correction to zero, we get 1/200, we also reduce the iso and get an almost guaranteed blur.
