Review Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) lens A17 from this review has a Nikon F mount and is suitable for all Nikon digital SLR cameras, including full-format cameras and cameras without a focus motor. Please note that there is earlier lens model - Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD Macro model 572D and model 772D. Versions 572D and 772D differ only in body color, the first is black, the second is silver. There is also a later model that has an image stabilizer and an ultrasonic motor - Tamron SP AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Di VC USD Model A005.

Review Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

View of the Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 lens focused on MDF at 300mm focal length.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is available for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony cameras, when buying, be careful to take a model with the same mount as your camera .

Examples of photos on the option of the lens for Pentax mount can be found in the camera review Pentax K-S2.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6, as for telephoto, is a very light lens, its weight is a little more than 400 grams. The lens was made in China, the assembly is not bad, but still in the hands of Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 it feels like a cheap toy. But the lens has a metal bayonet mount and a plastic hood, which comes in a box with the lens. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried, though in this position it blocks access to the focus ring, but access to the zoom ring remains open.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 with a hood clad back to front.

Sorry, but Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 has very slow focus. To achieve fast focus does not even help focus stop 'Normal / Marco 180-300'. You can turn on the 'Macro' mode only when the zoom position is between 180 and 300mm, and turn it off only when the lens is focused more than 1.5 meters. This use of the switch is not very convenient, especially when you need to quickly exit the macro mode.

At 'Macro 180-300' the focusing becomes monstrously slow. When the limiter is set to 'Normal', the lens will focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. In the 'Macro' position, the minimum focusing distance expands to only 0.95 meters, while you can shoot macro at 2: 1 magnification, which is a really good indicator for a budget 'dark' lens.

The lens has an aperture with 9 petals, which can close to F / 32 at 70mm and up to F / 45 at 300mm. When zooming, the rear lens of the lens moves and creates the effect of a vacuum cleaner, which does not affect the cleanliness of the mirror and matrix compartment): Also, the zoom ring goes very tight in extreme positions, I could not rotate the zoom ring smoothly, without jerking.

The focus ring is rubberized as well as the zoom ring and rotates 90 degrees in the 'Normal' position and 180 degrees in the 'Macro' position. Manual focusing in the 'Normal' position is not very convenient due to the small travel of the focusing ring. The lens makes a lot of noise during autofocus. It is also a pity that when focusing, the front lens rotates and goes forwarduse Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 s polarizing filter it will be difficult. The diameter of the front filter is small - only 62mm, I advise you to immediately put on the lens any inexpensive protective filter.

Attention: the lens has an MF / AF focusing mode switch, for manual focusing, be sure to set this switch to MF (Manual Focusing) position, otherwise the built-in motor may be damaged.

This is how the lens looks on my film camera

This is how the lens looks on my film camera

The most interesting thing is that, despite a number of its shortcomings, Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 optically turned out to be a pretty nice lens. It more or less normally copes with backlight and has not the worst sharpness and weak distortion. On closed apertures on my full-size camera Nikon D700 the lens produces quite normal image quality. Of the shortcomings - noticeable chromatic aberration and sharpening at extreme aperture and focal lengths. In general, the image quality is quite suitable for simple photo tasks.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using a hood. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression), no processing. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - from 5 to 9. Used white balance: 'Shadow', 'Sunny', 'Overcast', 'Auto'. The photo size has been reduced to 3 MP. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will match the range 105-450mm.

Conclusions:

The Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is a very cheap zoom lens. Slow focusing is a serious drawback. I think the lens has a good price / quality ratio. With such a lens on a sunny day, you can take pictures of birds and animals, and just shoot for your own pleasure - the main thing is to get used take off.

Good day. Please tell me how this lens will work on the D3100? Whether all functions will work - autofocus, etc. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • BB

Read the first 10-12 review lines

    • Arkady Shapoval

All functions will work and focusing and stabilizer and iris control. This is an analogue of AF-S, G, VR Nikon Lenses. Only the A17 model is needed.

      • anonym

Tell me where you can see that this is the model A17? They offered to buy such a lens, but said that there is no stabilizer, autofocus works.

        • Michael

          The case is usually written

      • anonym

Is the model number written on the box or on the lens itself?

      • Michael

It seems that this lens is without a stabilizer, so there will be no VR.

        • anonym

Thanks for the answer Michael. And without a stub, is it very critical or can you get used to it? for 4000 is it worth taking?

          • Michael

If there is a lot of light, but the rules. You can clamp any of your lenses at f / 5.6 and shoot with it at a shutter speed of about 1 / 300-1 / 450. And you will immediately understand whether it is critical for you personally to have a stub or not. Also the question of the budget, because with a stub, it will be 3-4 times more expensive. You can get used to everything))) For example, carry a tripod with you))))

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, that's right, I confused the lens from the admin panel, I apologize.

  • Andrei

    Good afternoon, Arkady.
Good advice is needed. I have a Nikon d3200, a few days ago I bought a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm F4-5.6G, took a very long time shooting at the zenith, I thought that I could handle the manual focus, but I often miss it and it’s not very familiar. I think to change it to Tamron AF 70-300mm f / 4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1: 2, which has a focus motor.
Tell me, how does this Tamaron with a picture compare to the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm, is it worth changing Nikon to Tamaron?
I can’t decide, I really hope for your advice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron is quite good, with autofocus it will be much more convenient.

      • Andrei

But how is he much inferior in the picture ???

  • Andrei

Or is it worth it to look at NIKKOR 55-300mm ????

    • anonym

      Works !!!

  • I took such a lens. At first I liked it. Now for the vacation I looked closely at the pictures - soap soap. I thought my hands were crooked. Nefiga, the soap is terrible, especially at 300 mm. My specimen is physically unable to take a picture like a cat in a survey. Well, it's just unrealistic. I looked at macro shots from that summer - the same thing. Decent colors and generally nice picture, but no sharpness at all, as a class. Got upset. I tested it on the target, of course, the zoom lens is dark, but still ... There is a front focus, not the same as on my Nikon 35 mm, but there is. It was useful to see what they write about Tamrons in other places - put out the light, the spread of quality.

  • Pilot

I went to the service. Expected crowds of disgruntled Tamron owners. Nothing like this. Cool service! It's generally empty. The prices are low. They were coming forward, asked me to make a diagnosis at once, they did it in front of me in 5 minutes. They immediately showed the target. Calibrated under warranty. Sharpness has become better. The lens's picture and colors are very good, that's a fact. Compared with nikkor 28-105 - contrast works very strangely. Formally, nikkor is much more contrasting, but the output picture is more pleasant from Tamron. At 28-105 contrast, sharpness in the center. Tamron has much sharper edges, I open and, but more HA

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I bought an A17NII lens that does not focus on infinity, on a scale it rises to L and then the emphasis goes on to infinity, should it be so? Or how to fix it?

  • Alexander

Arkady, tell me what are the differences between the Tamron AF 70-300 mm F / 4-5.6 Di LD Macro lenses for Nikon (A17N) and the one in the review (Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1 : 2) A17)

    • Arkady Shapoval

A17 is the general model name, A17N is the Nikon version.

      • Alexander

        thank you

  • Alexander

    here is his photo

  • Sergei

There are autofocus errors, the trunk is flimsy, annoying with focal lengths on the crop: 70mm turn into 113,4 mm, which is not always convenient, yet it is for a full frame. So I think it might be worth taking Canon 75-300 or 70-300. But be that as it may, I use it constantly, but I'm thinking of changing))

  • Rinaldo

Sorry, but how does it work with flashes. Does it transmit the distance to the camera?

    • Evgeniyklimko

It works fine with the flash. The flash zooms from 70 to 105 in my case.

  • anonym

Good day! Please tell me, under Nikon D90, what will be better in image quality, sharpness and other parameters, this model or Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6D? Thank you

  • Basil

    Hello
Tell me how it will work with Nikon D 3200, some write that it has a small optical resolution, up to 16 megapixels
    thank you

    • Dmitriy

Everything is fine with the sharpness of the lens with Nikon d3200

  • anonym

Strange ... I have exactly the same, but for Kenon. This bayonet is metal, and mine is plastic))

  • Sergei

I read the review and even thought about how much macro and distance to the subject are there? I put it on, went to the kitchen and found out))). Maybe someone needs a photo with the maximum macro, the distance when shooting is about 0,8 m. Photograph specially hand-held and with a short exposure to assess the absence of a stabilizer, lighting - a chandelier. FR 300mm (eq. 450), f9, 1 / 25s, iso 1600

    • Sergei

      And another one. f14, 1/60, iso 6400

    • Serg

      steel arms

  • anonym

While the minuses are very slow focusing, this determines everything ...

  • Sergei

I want to buy it for Nikon D80, will it work normally with it?

  • Alexander

Dear professionals and photography enthusiasts, help with choosing a 135mm lens for crop kenon for shooting distant objects, not people, options: tamron 70-300 from this review, ms jupiter37a, token 135 mm 2.8 rms, vivitar (token) 135 2.8 auto telefoto

    • Arkady Shapoval

tamro from review due to autofocus

  • Levon

This is a macro lens, among the examples did not show its capabilities) Other models with a ratio of 1: 3.8 are even more suitable for macro photography? thanks

  • Alex

I have the same, but Promaster, one to one, as described, very pleased, it’s a pleasure to shoot on the beach :)

  • Levon

I bought a non-motorized version of A17 (without the AF-MF slider), because I have a carcass with a screwdriver. The bayonet also has a ring with apertures from 4 to 32. The device takes off only when the aperture 32 is on (it is drawn in orange) When you put any other, the shutter does not work, and fEE is set in the viewfinder. What does it mean ??
It looks like after “playing” with this ring, the monochrome screen stopped showing the number of remaining frames, but shows some other numbers (4.0k, 3.9k) (((

    • Arkady Shapoval

It should be so. Bet 32 and forget about this ring. As for the number of shots - you changed the quality, now it shows k-kilo i.e. thousands.

  • Victor

I got myself this lens because I thought that every photographer (or amateur) on the farm should have something like that. But since, first of all, you are equipped with priority glasses, then it was this lens that I bought completely by accident, not used, in a box and for ridiculous money (only 4 thousand rubles). Honestly, I thought that the quality would correspond to the cost. After the first series of pictures, I realized how wrong I was. Of course, this lens cannot be compared with expensive glasses, but it justifies its cost by 250%. I think that the owners of expensive models cannot boast of the same results (if we take PRICE as a basis - QUALITY). Filmed on the legendary Nikon D90. The results are amazing: color rendition, range, macro mode, detail, etc. All this taking into account the lack of an optical stabilizer

  • Levon

Arkady, I bought this used ear glass and have been suffering for a month now. I don’t understand if it is working properly or the zoom is broken. Usually in zooms, when you turn the ring and look at the in / finder, the objects increase or move away, respectively. There’s such a zoom lens on the wife’s canon; on whale Nikonovsky 18-55 one ring and when you twist in manual mode it happens. And I have something wrong with the A17. There are two rings and when you twist the first ring with focal lengths in manual mode, nothing changes in the viewfinder; that 70, that 300. The trunk does not leave AT ALL. In auto mode, the trunk leaves, but not to the maximum length, focuses, everything is fine. You also wrote that with lenses of this design, if you lower the carcass down, the trunk spontaneously increases. This is not on my copy, but in manual mode you can manually pull it out to the full length and then the picture in the viewfinder is enlarged, everything is as it should. Can you tell me if my glass is defective or is it the way it should be? Maybe I’ll explain it chaotically, but please try to understand me))

    • Dmitriy

Levon, this Tamron has a very tight zoom ring. You need to understand that zooming occurs in any mode (auto AF or manual MF) only by rotating the zoom ring by hand (it is located closer to the mount). The second ring is just the focusing ring. With the switch in the MF position, you can adjust the focus manually. In the AF position, the lens does this automatically. I was surprised myself at such a tight move. Over time, I think, "will get used to it, will develop"

  • Dmitriy

By the way, the Tamron AF 70-300mm di (A16) lens for Pentax stopped producing, but if someone else needs it, I saw it here http://www.pentaxist.ru/p/blog-page_4331.html#mmp=ViewProductPage&mmpid=11747

  • Denis

good colors and sharpness. I never had tamrons, but I like their bokeh with reviews and colors :)

  • Jury

Personally, my opinion. It is good only for a start and then you begin to see flaws. It’s better to add a bit and look at the sigma or nikor of the same parameters, the result is immediately visible especially in the sharpness and sharpness of the spims.
