Review Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) lens A17 from this review has a Nikon F mount and is suitable for all Nikon digital SLR cameras, including full-format cameras and cameras without a focus motor. Please note that there is earlier lens model - Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD Macro model 572D and model 772D. Versions 572D and 772D differ only in body color, the first is black, the second is silver. There is also a later model that has an image stabilizer and an ultrasonic motor - Tamron SP AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Di VC USD Model A005.

View of the Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 lens focused on MDF at 300mm focal length.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is available for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony cameras, when buying, be careful to take a model with the same mount as your camera .

Examples of photos on the option of the lens for Pentax mount can be found in the camera review Pentax K-S2.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6, as for telephoto, is a very light lens, its weight is a little more than 400 grams. The lens was made in China, the assembly is not bad, but still in the hands of Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 it feels like a cheap toy. But the lens has a metal bayonet mount and a plastic hood, which comes in a box with the lens. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried, though in this position it blocks access to the focus ring, but access to the zoom ring remains open.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 with a hood clad back to front.

Sorry, but Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 has very slow focus. To achieve fast focus does not even help focus stop 'Normal / Marco 180-300'. You can turn on the 'Macro' mode only when the zoom position is between 180 and 300mm, and turn it off only when the lens is focused more than 1.5 meters. This use of the switch is not very convenient, especially when you need to quickly exit the macro mode.

At 'Macro 180-300' the focusing becomes monstrously slow. When the limiter is set to 'Normal', the lens will focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. In the 'Macro' position, the minimum focusing distance expands to only 0.95 meters, while you can shoot macro at 2: 1 magnification, which is a really good indicator for a budget 'dark' lens.

The lens has an aperture with 9 petals, which can close to F / 32 at 70mm and up to F / 45 at 300mm. When zooming, the rear lens of the lens moves and creates the effect of a vacuum cleaner, which does not affect the cleanliness of the mirror and matrix compartment): Also, the zoom ring goes very tight in extreme positions, I could not rotate the zoom ring smoothly, without jerking.

The focus ring is rubberized as well as the zoom ring and rotates 90 degrees in the 'Normal' position and 180 degrees in the 'Macro' position. Manual focusing in the 'Normal' position is not very convenient due to the small travel of the focusing ring. The lens makes a lot of noise during autofocus. It is also a pity that when focusing, the front lens rotates and goes forwarduse Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 s polarizing filter it will be difficult. The diameter of the front filter is small - only 62mm, I advise you to immediately put on the lens any inexpensive protective filter.

Attention: the lens has an MF / AF focusing mode switch, for manual focusing, be sure to set this switch to MF (Manual Focusing) position, otherwise the built-in motor may be damaged.

This is how the lens looks on my film camera

This is how the lens looks on my film camera

The most interesting thing is that, despite a number of its shortcomings, Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 optically turned out to be a pretty nice lens. It more or less normally copes with backlight and has not the worst sharpness and weak distortion. On closed apertures on my full-size camera Nikon D700 the lens produces quite normal image quality. Of the shortcomings - noticeable chromatic aberration and sharpening at extreme aperture and focal lengths. In general, the image quality is quite suitable for simple photo tasks.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using a hood. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression), no processing. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - from 5 to 9. Used white balance: 'Shadow', 'Sunny', 'Overcast', 'Auto'. The photo size has been reduced to 3 MP. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will match the range 105-450mm.

Conclusions:

The Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is a very cheap zoom lens. Slow focusing is a serious drawback. I think the lens has a good price / quality ratio. With such a lens on a sunny day, you can take pictures of birds and animals, and just shoot for your own pleasure - the main thing is to get used take off.

  • M.S.

    thanks for such reviews!
tell me which lens is better to take on the basis of a small budget and a huge desire? :)
    Sigma AF 70-300mm f / 4-5.6 APO DG Macro or Tamron AF 70-300mm F / 4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro 1: 2?

    • Arkady Shapoval

This Tamron shoots with an increase of 1: 2, visually can shoot larger than in the examples sent.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, thank you very much for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, I had to edit the links after they were published (so that they could be opened by clicking), and I had to restart the browser, since the revision did not "go through". And now the text of the first topic has disappeared, only the edited one remains. Therefore, I am completing the question myself. Is it possible to shoot a macro with this lens, as in my photos taken with a Samsung NV 11 digital camera? And that in this review there is a catastrophic lack of pictures taken in macro mode. Is it possible to add 2-3 photos of maximum macro with this lens to the review? They just advised me instead of a kit, to NIKON D7000, 18-105 VR, this one, so I'm looking for information about it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I do not have this lens at hand.

  • Natalia

The motor on this lens has broken ... now it works purely on manual focusing, but I would like to return the automatic one. Tell me, is it possible to find this motor separately?

  • anonym

Separately, they vryatli, and indeed the focusing speed of this motor is so killing that it is faster with your hands.

    • Serg

come on! with this lens many times I shot cycling contests of misses, it was no more than 5% for that kind of money, this is ideal

  • anonym

good evening . tell me, please, I'm trying on different modes, including auto, but from a distance of a little more than a meter I can't focus, it's a marriage or it should be .... with the whale nikon, everything is not bad .... thanks ~!

  • anonym

If the latch is in the normal position, then the minimum to the object should be 1,5 m, if in macro (zoom from 180 to 300 twisted), it should focus from 0,95 m (maximum increase) on the crop, it turns out even more than the declared 1: 2.

  • Pastor

Interesting glass. As far as I understand, no glass at this price will give such a macro. I seriously thought about buying it for the macro at d80. Macro rings are already tired, but it's a pity to take an expensive makrushnik. Aperture in macro is useless, but 300 mm will be very useful. With a flash on the camera and two slave on the sides, you can take great macro shots at home. If I manage to buy and try it in the near future, I will unsubscribe here again.

  • anonym

I use this lens and it gives a macro image much better than a tele, such a budget bag and makrik.

  • Valera

I’ve been using it for about 2 months now, I’ve taken a good telephoto and macro at such a price, I took it for 5000 rubles, shooting macro and at large focal lengths from 200 to 300 is best with a tripod. Yes, slow autofocus, but it’s not so bad, in general I like the photos from this lens, I give a link to the photo album in my classmates, I’ll immediately warn the photo a little edited in Aesdi pro. http://odnoklassniki.ru/profile/131465838733/album/565894882957

  • Dmitriy

For almost a year I have had this lens, I will not say anything bad about it, he works out his 5600 rubles for all 100, shot them a fireworks from the window of the apartment, the result turned out to be quite nice for himself, but he does not give anything supernatural, but he can reach “that house on the shore” in condition

  • Paul

The cat in the photo is clearly accustomed to photographing and squinting at the sound of confirmation of focus. Waiting for a flash :))

    • Arkady Shapoval

This sound is always turned off for me.

  • Elena

Tell me, will the lens with the D3100 work?

Good evening. Someone can open their eyes to a teapot in photography ... Which lens is better, this one or the Tamron AF 18-200mm f / 3.5-6.3 (IF) Aspherical LD XR DiII Macro A14 in terms of its technical characteristics and why? Thanks in advance.

  • Ivan Wolverine

bought in June 2014 for even more ridiculous money 4500 rubles in Svyaznoy in the Krasnodar Territory of the Russian Federation (as I understand it, they were selling illiquid assets) bought precisely because of the cheapness ...))) ... I did not count on good quality pictures for such a ridiculous price ... but I was surprised that the sharpness is very good even at 300 mm…. it really does not focus quickly, but for sure…. I shot macro - cherries in the garden and flowers and I can confirm - the colors are very pleasant .... The constructive is very good if you compare similar objects from CANON, where everything hangs out ((... I don't really like this worn-out phrase - but I have to admit - I'm happy with it like an elephant ...))))

  • anonym

I bought for kenon, the mount is plastic, painted with silver paint, although there are metal ones, pay attention when buying.

  • Alexander Kobzev

I liked the photo with the cat! As it goes! What about the look ?! Lynx!

  • Kate:)

Hello) today I was presented with a Tamron SP AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Di VC USD ... it is mentioned in the article, but there is no review ...
Or is there, I just could not find?

    • Lynx

      no review.

  • Xprofoto

Kind ... first of all, thank you very much for the reviews.
Please tell me tamron 70-300 A17. Nikon on the crop will be 105-450, there is no DX lens tag.
The lens went like a whale on a Sony A200. Pentax is written on the back of the lens. Which adapter do I need to work with nikon?

    • Lynx

      will be.
      .........
nikon-pentaks zh ... but infinity will still not be.

      • Xprofoto

Thank you! "I read your comments, I like it)" then it makes no sense since there is no infinity) let it lie gathering dust)
And you can ask a real pro, evaluate my shit photo, I think I only ruined the moments, such a girl was
please look, otherwise I gave it and now the soul is not in place ((( https://yadi.sk/d/mJLz2CzNiZq2h
I shot of course on bullshit ol E410 with a whale of 40-150 rank (((and there are 18-180 3.5-6.3 dx sutsko. And now I realized that I want manual glass) D200 on the road, after olo with a 4/3 matrix and a child’s look, there will be a mega super duper. I want 81helios. and a nice tele-macro zoom. That would be 90,150-500,750mm and lighter on the crop. Maybe I'll take a 500mm F8.0 snake for a start, it's just a bit dark judging by the reviews

Only I am scared of the recall of the noisy d200 matrix. that it’s straight so noisy as on my Olympus E410 E500 in general hawaii is noisy.

        • Lynx

I am not a pro at all - in the same way I had a chance to study by joy 3 years ago ...
          .....
On technique - do not worry.
Dvuhsotka is good in flowers, almost like a "soak". despite the slow work.
Noise there is only at elevated iso, from 400 and above, and at 100-200 it is very suitable.
          ....
from the pictures - make 20, or even better, a dozen photos from this pack. then it will be possible to speak substantively. One of the very useful perks of a photographer is selection.
          ....
Tele macrozoom above 55-200 or 70-300 is unlikely to be needed, unless you shoot stars.

        • Peter Sh.

For some reason, people are terrified of noise. Noise to noise - strife. Bad color noise on the face yes it looks like a nightmare
A uniform noise is a noble grain, no big deal, it even adds charm.

          Here is the D200, ISO1600:

          • Lynx

            noise, noise, strife ..
A shot at high ISO, but with GOOD lighting, does not produce as much noise as a picture at medium ISO, but with fig lighting.

  • Ivan

Will autofocus work on the D5000?

    • Xprofoto

Of course not. The D5000 does not have a screwdriver. A tamron drive auto focus screwdriver.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 will work at d5000, as this lens model has a built-in focusing motor, which is indicated in the review. The “AF” designation in this case does not represent the capabilities of the lens, as it is a non-Nikon lens.

  • Xprofoto

    Guys took D200 81n, 37A, and Soligor CD 70-210 3.5 macro
And what I want to say as it seemed to me when my dad and I went with Olympuses, when meeting with Nikon, Kenon, it seemed to us that our oliki are shit, children's toys.
having read reviews on forums, blogs about the divinity of nikon ran to buy one.

But in fact, the e410 is still that machine, it is a pity that the 4 \ 3 crop 2X is somewhere minus somewhere plus, for example, in macro. But the color rendition at a height clicked what you see with your eyes and you get in the picture
At d200, I clicked 2k in three weeks. I understood him, I take off my hat to two hundred. But the Olympus will remain in our arsenal forever!
The only way the Olympus would support the confirmation of focusing on a point with manual price optics would not be for him, the exposure meter works very correctly. even on F11. For d200, for some reason after 5.6 you need to make exposure compensation in plus (Although the data in the CPU are entered correctly

I bet if oli makes the flagship type D4 D3S.
That Nikonons with Kenons taken together will not have what will be in the Olympus.

  • Levon

Is there no screwdriver in the Canon EOS 50D? In the 40D review, you don’t mention this.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Canon EOS cameras have no concept of a "screwdriver", it is absent in principle, since all lenses have built-in focusing motors.

  • anonym

But will it work on nikon 3200?

  • Dimey

    Good afternoon.
I’ve been thinking about buying this lens for more than a week.
Interested in both length and what is macro.
But the question is different, I'm interested in drops of water, with this lens, as I understand it, do I need a distance from a meter from the object? Is it worth it to take it in your way, since a good, 105 / 200mm macro will not be overpowered financially for now. A 40mm micro did not look very well, since you need to shoot at close focus, you will have to wipe the lens after each shot.

    • Aresky

Dimey, here is a photo from a distance of about 2 meters :). Nothing cropped, a bit in LR processed and put a vignette. Shot TAMRON LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

      • Denis

this is not macro yet. the usual 55-300 minutes. distance 1.4 meters :)

        • Aresky

This one has 1,5, but is it really that the macro is determined by the minimum distance to the object ???? )))
For me, it was always a macro - it was as if it was large :) and it is not necessary to kiss a fly in the eye if there is an opportunity to take a picture of this eye being a couple of meters from this very fly.

          • Denis

in this article they write like this

When the limiter is set to 'Normal', the lens focuses from infinity to 1.5 meters. In the 'Macro' position, the minimum focusing distance extends and is only 0.95 meters, while you can shoot macro with a 2 to 1 magnification, which is a really good indicator for a budget 'dark' lens

I think that the cat's face is not a macro
By the way, 18-55 has better macro capabilities than 55-300, and, obviously, your lens, too. minimum range is the same as the last

            • Denis

Oops, sorry. yours is not 1,5 meters. misled me by this statement)

              • Sergey Obskura

                Not 2 to 1, but 1: 2.

              • Denis

                “2 to 1” - I quoted the author
