Review Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) lens A17 from this review has a Nikon F mount and is suitable for all Nikon digital SLR cameras, including full-format cameras and cameras without a focus motor. Please note that there is earlier lens model - Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD Macro model 572D and model 772D. Versions 572D and 772D differ only in body color, the first is black, the second is silver. There is also a later model that has an image stabilizer and an ultrasonic motor - Tamron SP AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Di VC USD Model A005.

View of the Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 lens focused on MDF at 300mm focal length.

Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is available for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony cameras, when buying, be careful to take a model with the same mount as your camera .

Examples of photos on the option of the lens for Pentax mount can be found in the camera review Pentax K-S2.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6, as for telephoto, is a very light lens, its weight is a little more than 400 grams. The lens was made in China, the assembly is not bad, but still in the hands of Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 it feels like a cheap toy. But the lens has a metal bayonet mount and a plastic hood, which comes in a box with the lens. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried, though in this position it blocks access to the focus ring, but access to the zoom ring remains open.

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6

Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 with a hood clad back to front.

Sorry, but Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 has very slow focus. To achieve fast focus does not even help focus stop 'Normal / Marco 180-300'. You can turn on the 'Macro' mode only when the zoom position is between 180 and 300mm, and turn it off only when the lens is focused more than 1.5 meters. This use of the switch is not very convenient, especially when you need to quickly exit the macro mode.

At 'Macro 180-300' the focusing becomes monstrously slow. When the limiter is set to 'Normal', the lens will focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. In the 'Macro' position, the minimum focusing distance expands to only 0.95 meters, while you can shoot macro at 2: 1 magnification, which is a really good indicator for a budget 'dark' lens.

The lens has an aperture with 9 petals, which can close to F / 32 at 70mm and up to F / 45 at 300mm. When zooming, the rear lens of the lens moves and creates the effect of a vacuum cleaner, which does not affect the cleanliness of the mirror and matrix compartment): Also, the zoom ring goes very tight in extreme positions, I could not rotate the zoom ring smoothly, without jerking.

The focus ring is rubberized as well as the zoom ring and rotates 90 degrees in the 'Normal' position and 180 degrees in the 'Macro' position. Manual focusing in the 'Normal' position is not very convenient due to the small travel of the focusing ring. The lens makes a lot of noise during autofocus. It is also a pity that when focusing, the front lens rotates and goes forwarduse Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 s polarizing filter it will be difficult. The diameter of the front filter is small - only 62mm, I advise you to immediately put on the lens any inexpensive protective filter.

Attention: the lens has an MF / AF focusing mode switch, for manual focusing, be sure to set this switch to MF (Manual Focusing) position, otherwise the built-in motor may be damaged.

The most interesting thing is that, despite a number of its shortcomings, Tamron 70-300 / 4-5.6 optically turned out to be a pretty nice lens. It more or less normally copes with backlight and has not the worst sharpness and weak distortion. On closed apertures on my full-size camera Nikon D700 the lens produces quite normal image quality. Of the shortcomings - noticeable chromatic aberration and sharpening at extreme aperture and focal lengths. In general, the image quality is quite suitable for simple photo tasks.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using a hood. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression), no processing. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - from 5 to 9. Used white balance: 'Shadow', 'Sunny', 'Overcast', 'Auto'. The photo size has been reduced to 3 MP. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will match the range 105-450mm.

Conclusions:

The Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 is a very cheap zoom lens. Slow focusing is a serious drawback. I think the lens has a good price / quality ratio. With such a lens on a sunny day, you can take pictures of birds and animals, and just shoot for your own pleasure - the main thing is to get used take off.

Arkady, thanks for the next photo article :)

Your Nikon 8008s is found in almost every full-frame lens review. As I understand it, this is a hint at what the photographer is shooting, not the camera :)
    I wish you good shots!

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s just convenient for me to take a look of the lens on 8808s, since I have it without a strap, and all other cameras with a strap. Before that, I shot a 350d view of the lens, which was also without a strap, but I’m uncomfortable using it constantly in my hands. And about the fact that I specifically shoot at 8008s I did not think :)

  • Vladislav

... I join, with gratitude for the next review!

I shot with this lens for four years until I accidentally broke it. I was literally in love with his optical drawing, with a very gentle reproduction of colors, unobtrusive sharpness, very useful for the vividness of the picture, especially the portrait; decent contrast. Moreover, it showed itself very stable throughout the entire range. The “macro” mode often and reliably helped me out, giving an excellent image at aperture up to 11. I did not observe any back-front focuses with either the D-50 or the D-90. Yes, it focuses slowly and sometimes wrongly; with the D-90 it “didn’t work” due to the frequent loss of telecommunications, which, however, is a whim of the camera, and not a flaw in the lens. The nerve factor for me was the strong purple border, which was difficult to remove manually in PHOTOSHOP. But if you look at the visual quality of the pictures taken by this TAMRON, you can forgive him all the weaknesses and shortcomings, and rejoice in having such opportunities for absolutely ridiculous money! I bought it new in the store for 6200 rubles. Isn't it funny?

  • Jury

Arkady, how do you think, in comparison with the Nikon 55-200 VR? Of course, in the FR, available to both.

    • Arkady Shapoval

on the range of 70-200 it’s better, especially on the crop, and it turns out a little lighter,

  • Andrei

For the cost of 150U it is just a gorgeous lens, but such a price is exclusively for sony / minolta cameras. For other systems, the price is about 400ue.

    • Andrei

I'm sorry, but 400 is for a version with a motor, a non-motorized version is half the price ...

  • Ilya

TO: Andrey $ 400 costs VC USD and such is 160.

  • anonym

    Nikon 55-300 or tamron 70-300 for D5100?

    • Anton

I join the question. Which option is preferable to crop 55-300 or this. Thanks.

      • Vadim

Of course, I’m not Arkady, but I think there’s nothing to think about. Native with a stub plus 55 f3,5, the price is sane and the quality is definitely not worse. Well, there is no such macro, but is it macro?

    • i-hero-in

      This camera disappointed:
      Exposure 1/4000
      Focus 39 points
The matrix is only 16 megapixels, albeit from D4.
      The exposure meter is old.
      Price 3000 ye

This is not a professional camera. Another retro gadget with amateur characteristics. Those who shot on film will remain on it. And those who are digital will find a better instrument.

Nikon's marketers have recently gone berserk ... Apparently from Yabloko, some boss came to them ...

    • anonym

It's cool of course, but the D700 receiver, it seems to me, would be more in demand.

  • Sergey.

I am the owner of this lens. Really lacking a stub. You have to overestimate the ISO, or shoot a series, and choose successful shots. On a sunny day, the photos are excellent. I use it as a portrait and macro.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

As always pleased. Good and laconic.

  • Capiton

It seems to me that this Tamron is one of the most popular non-native lenses. It's moderately sharp, very good at f / 8 macro shooter. The main disadvantages are the drop in contrast and chromatism. Flimsy but lightweight. Dropped from a meter height on the carpet - the hood mount crumbled, but the drop did not affect the optical properties.

  • Vyacheslav

The same is the owner of this lens. He showed himself perfectly in sunny weather in the summer. But in the fall I was not happy until I bought a flash. Recently, at a children's party, he took Nikon 35 f / 1,8 with him and this Tamron, at first he tried to shoot on Nikon but often did not get into focus, not enough focal length, Tamron literally saved. If there is enough light, then for crop on focal 70-120 it is an excellent portraiture. I didn’t like it as a macro, a very large MDF for macro. Compared to Nikon, the 35 f / 1,8 eats up the battery faster, perhaps this is a subjective opinion. The aperture changes very smoothly depending on the focal length, i.e. up to 180mm maximum aperture of 4,5. I like the lens construct. Nothing dangles, does not produce a feeling of fragility at all, those who write like this may be compared with Nikon 80-200. Both rings are rubberized, wide and very comfortable. Nikon 55-300 is better only due to VR, but again the owners complain that it’s soapy, Tamron is not at all soapy.

  • Dmitriy

I was looking for did not find, who can tell if there is still a difference between the tamrons LD Di and Di VC USD except for different motors and the presence of a stabilizer?

  • Anna

Good evening. I couldn't find the autofocus switch, and my camera (Nikon D3000), when set in M mode, writes to me “lock the lowest aperture value with the ring on the lens (maximum f-number). That is, it asks to close the diaphragm completely. ((

    • Arkady Shapoval

Located on the bayonet side. Tamron has flaws with chips for his lenses.

  • Andrei

Hello. Be kind, enlighten the dense. What a beast is this Quantaray 70-300mm 1: 4-5. 6 LD TELE-MACRO (1: 2)? Is it someone else's analogue, or what? Search engines have not clarified much. There is an opportunity to buy Nikon D3100 with this "glass". My first DSLR. P.S. Thank you for a wonderful and popular site.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Work with d3100 will not be due to lack of motor.

      • Andrei

Thanks! Then I'll take it as a "carcass". And Quantaray will go to work :-) Very interesting price.

      • Andrei

The A17NII version has an internal motor, and accordingly will work on the D3000-D5000 series

  • Max

    Hello! I'm new =)
I bought myself a Nikon D3200 with a Kit 18-55mm VR lens, but it’s not enough for me, and now I want to buy another lens.
What do you recommend Nikkor DX 55-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S or Tamron AF 70-300mm F / 4-5,6 Di LD Macro?
The first has two ED glass elements and a vibration reduction system, and the second will be cheaper and has a macro mode (I like to take pictures of insects, flowers, ice crystals ...)

  • Eugene

Max, if you need a macro, then your whale can replace this tamron, you just need to enlarge the picture and crop, the sharpness at 18-55 bp is good, but with a tele-range with the same algorithm of action, the result will be slightly worse, I took this tamron 2 months ago only from - due to the fact that it was new and for 2500 rubles, for the owner the lack of a stub was critical, I just took it so that I had 450 mm air on the crop

    • Max

      Thank you very much!
I, too, leaned more towards Nikkor, and your advice helped me a lot. =)

  • 321

such a lens for sony slt-a37?
    compared to whale 18-55sam

  • Denis

Hello. Let me ask. As far as I understand, this lens will not work autofocus with devices without a “screwdriver” - like Nikon D5100 and hedgehogs with them, do you need to look for an SP model for them?

Correct please if I am mistaken.

  • Eugene

Denis, this glass not only with a built-in motor is also suitable for a full frame, but there is no image stabilizer, only for working in sunny weather.

  • Olga

So I think, take a tamron 200-500 or still wait 150-600 ???? If anyone is personally familiar with this beast, tell me your opinion)))

  • Alexey

I bought one the other day, I am very satisfied, I am working out my money 100%. I don’t use autofocus, so the noisy and slow motor does not bother me. Aberrations slip at the extreme large focal points, just like soap.

  • anonym

But what kind of soap are you all writing about? When shooting with 300mm hands, set the shutter speed to shorter than 1/500, and the miracle soap disappears, and with a tripod, use mirror elevation together with a timer or remote control, the lens with sharpness has full order for all FRs.

  • Vladimir

Who will recommend which filter to him? I mean - ordinary, from mechanical damage to the lens. I ask because the lens is already "darkish", but what filter to take so that the aperture ratio does not drop even more, and of course the sharpness.

  • Ivan

I bought this lens on occasion) I just don’t understand, they write here about the built-in focus motor .. Is this so? My version, with serial number 084994, the full name of Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17, does not have a focus switch and, accordingly, a motor. What is this version of the lens? The previous owner bought it for the D5100, I thought that the focus motor was broken and resold to me for a ridiculous price of 700 rubles.
