Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor (AI) review

Before reading this review, I advise you to look into the review Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm 1: 2.8 (MKII version)

Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor AI is an old but good manual focus wide-angle for Nikon cameras. The copy from the review was made around 1980, but it is very well preserved and can still please with its work :)

Ai version of Nikon 24 / 2.8 is different from previous ones Non-ai Nikkor NC Auto, K, Nikkor-N lenses with a new, improved optical design. Later, the same circuit was used in Nikon 24 / 2.8 lenses. Ai-s,AF MKI, AF MK II and AF-D.

Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor

Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor Side View

Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor is very well assembled, the focusing ring is rubberized and rotates smoothly through approximately 180 degrees, while the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk is slightly lengthened. When focusing, the rear lens rotates. The lens uses a floating lens system to correct the image when focusing at close distances (formerly called FEE, now CRC).

Lens lens enlightenment

NIC lens lens enlightenment

In the center of the frame, the lens creates a sharp image already from F / 2.8, tolerates side and back light normally, but still catches the hares. Distortion is easy to see in the photo, and the edges of the frame are much less sharp than the center. The lens creates strong vignetting.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression), no processing. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - position 5 out of 10. Used white balance: 'Shadow', 'Sunny', 'Cloudy', 'Auto'. The size of the photos has been reduced to 3 MP.

The lens is primarily interesting when used on full-frame cameras. How to shoot with such manual lenses on modern Nikon cameras see 'How to use Non-CPU lenses on modern Nikon CZK'.

Conclusions:

Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor is a good old wide-angle, it does not produce the best image quality, but it is quite usable.

  • Eugene

Hello. I want shirik full frame. There is nikkor 24-85 / 2.8-4D. He was at your review. Now, if you compare 24mm on the zoom and 24mm on the fix (24 AFD or manual, it doesn't matter) how much will the difference be? thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

24-85 on 2.8 is almost idle, the same from the review can be used on 2.8

  • Sanya

Thanks for the review. And at what aperture is sharpness good across the frame?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      With 8-11

  • Tandemk

To compare lenses on specific carcasses or matrix sizes, I use the site http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Camera-Lens-Ratings
There, of course, it is measured in parrots, but visually you can compare both glass and matrix.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Synthetic tests may not always show many other aspects of the lens.

  • Angela

Arkady, can I ask you a question as a professional? Tell me please why if the lenses are all round then the photos are rectangular?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Because the matrix is rectangular, the same as film frames.

    • Artem

Great question! Or are you so trolling?

  • Andrei

I use this lens on the Nikon D300. Hooked on a hood, no vignetting. Some hint at the vignette was suspected when he put the hood on the polarik twisted into the lens.

On crop, all edges of the frame fly away for the image.

They say that full-frame 24mm are not good at cropping ... They are good for me. :) In terms of image size - 35ka, but in focal length it is still 24mm.

Here are some photos from him (bricks without any processing): http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/tyrson/album/373539/?

    • Do_Oraemon

Yeah, shirik with a polar when photographing a cloudy sky in clear weather is hard to overestimate :)

If you deal with landscape photos or reports, then 24mm even on the crop will be enough. Moreover, those who are seriously engaged in photography, even if as an amateur, will not use crop all their lives. A set of optics for FF is useful in any case. Stupidity is committed by one who buys sets of optics for crop. For rooms, maybe not enough, but for all other tasks - it’s enough.

24, 50, 85, 135 should be for every serious amateur photographer. For example, I really like fixes and I will not exchange the picture that they give out for the convenience and versatility of zooms.

      • Alexander

I agree that fixes give better quality. But when shooting in rapidly changing conditions, especially a nimble grandson, without autofocus zoom is difficult. Fixes are most suitable for leisurely thoughtful work. The given line is good, but 14, 24, 35, 50, 105 and 200 mm, probably not worse.

  • Nelly

Please help with a choice of lenses for the Nikon D800, in sizes of $ 400. I think about 24mm (2.8) or 28mm (2.8), but I don’t know which of them is better suited to the D800. Thank you in advance!

    • Vitalij

Nicholas are not the minds of people, as they buy such expensive professional carcasses, but then feed, which is an object of brothers. The photographs with such equipment do not have such food, they know the stench, what a need. Even so, it’s not cheap to buy a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm F / 1.4G ED.

      • Igor

So! The truth-yak light is old: it’s easier to paint a camera, but a bit more expensive :-) Ale chuv takuk dumka, 24 / 2.8 is more beautiful for 28 / 2.8 (I think, not just kutom).

      • Vadim Ogolyar

G glasses do not fit film cameras. Suddenly he has a film and a number? Then you need to take the universal.

    • Nikolai

Nelly. It's too late, but I want to offer a rare glass. Nikon nikkor 35mmf / 1: 1,4.

  • Maksim

Arkady, good afternoon! I have 24 / 2.8D on the D600. Tell me, please, does this lens allow the matrix?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Stupid question, if you yourself do not see, is the point to ask?

  • max

Arkady, do me a favor, if you were dealing with the tokina / quantaray 19-35 / 3,5-4,5 lens, tell me what to prefer for the landscape, his or Nikkor 24 / 2.8?

  • max

or prefer to all this world-20?)

  • Danila

Arkady, does the floating lens system not affect the sharpness of the lens? Thanks!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, it is designed to preserve it when focusing at close focusing distances.

  • Vadim

Arkady, for what reasons do you say that this lens is better for FF than for crop, with such a vignette and sharpness at the edges?

    • Arkady Shapoval

And why is he even on the crop?

      • Vadim

It is slightly lighter than whale, and generally 35mm wide angle classic. I have a manual 28 / 2.8 on the crop now, which is somewhat narrower, and I think it would be just right for 24 / 2.8.

        • Jury

Of course, this is a matter of habit, but I would call this glass wide with a stretch. 17 mm in this regard will be more comfortable. When I switched to full frame, I began to like the 24mm f / 2.8d much more.

          • Lynx

wide - is called a lens that is shorter than "normal".
            for a crop normal - about 35-40 mm, i.e. 24 is definitely a shirik.

            • The

              For crop 1.5 - normal 27mm

          • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

24mm is still considered a wide-angle and wider than 21 and 20mm are already ultra-wide. Wide angle is 24-35mm. In the film time, this was exactly the alignment. I remember talking with a street photographer on the embankment and he took out a 17mm Tamron from the wardrobe trunk, I'm abaldel! In 95, this was rare. Then 19-35 zooms appeared in the public domain, one such from Tokina got to me almost as a gift. Of course, the handwriting was rather dry, not Pentax, but it solved its problems, and on the slides there was no particular difference with native glass at all.

  • Jury

By saying “stretch with a stretch”, I meant that on the crop it differs from normal by only 10 degrees. Obviously, this is a wide-angle lens, but it is more convenient to shoot landscapes with a lens that has at least 78-80 degrees. For a crop, this is 17 mm.

    • Lynx

Well, landscapes are filmed differently. Even on television specifically.

      • Jury

Of course, just a subjective opinion.

  • Peter Sh.

It’s extremely difficult to shoot the landscape. It is necessary that there would be a lot of all sorts of interesting things on the ground under the feet and in the sky above the head. Such places are far from everywhere. Usually you have to drag there more than one day.
Otherwise, half the frame will be earth, half the sky, and the subject itself will hang indiscernible somewhere far away on the horizon. In the city, half a frame will be occupied by asphalt, and the buildings will be tops in a heap.
Here's an example, just 18mm on the crop:

  • Peter Sh.

    In general, longing is mortal.

I don’t know how others find landscapes for themselves, they rarely come across to me:

    • Vyacheslav

And he brought a very good shot :) Probably to refute his own words. In my opinion, shirik is needed just for landscapes, so that in one shot, for example, to cover all the beauty of the sky at sunset. When photographing the sky, you cannot approach or move away if there is not enough corner width, so there is usually only one way out - to use a shirik. Another example: when you are standing on the bank of a river and want to photograph a beautiful city view from the river, so that the river is in the frame, you can of course move away so that everything fits in the frame, but the river will then disappear from the frame. And not everyone knows how to correctly stitch panoramas.

      • Vyacheslav

Photos without processing (not old, did not have time).

      • Vyacheslav

Sunset, I would like to shoot wider. Both photos are 18mm., Shot with a standard Sigma 18-50 f / 2.8-4.5 zoom

    • Sveta

The width is needed on vacation, the rest of the time I even have 35mm of crop on the shelf.

  • Sergey T.

Please tell me - Is there a difference in the files shot on

    Nikon D600, Nikkor 24mm 2,8 AIS (manual) and Nikkor D / AF 24mm

2,8 (digital), and if so, in what?

  • Liana

Good day. Give me joy, I don’t know myself anymore Mayu nikon d7000 iz ob'-ktivom 24-85 f2,8-4d, In principle, everything is miraculous not working 2,8 diaphragms, you can use it to reach such a dark suppression without adding niyak. = (((I know with my camera in the dark super Prof. picture is important rozrahovuvati, ale I know that trochi can be more beautiful) I’ll think about buying a Nikon 24mm 1: 2.8, but I still want to power it up for the joy of my brother?

    • BB

Buy a good flash. And if shooting conditions allow, then several flashes.
      70-300Vr @ f / 5.6 + a pair of flashes + synchronizers, dark room, shooting distance of about 8 meters
      http://vk.com/photo44381128_369355501

      • Liana

70-300? I’m afraid that the child’s day is important. To that I want to buy abo nikon 24mm 2,8, abo 50 mm 1,4, I stand in front of the vibrator .. (

        • Sergey

Children's birthday indoors - only a flash will help you here.
At 2,8 DOF, small, children by nature are mobile, will constantly fall out of DOF.

          • Liana

I give a flash, that if at the corporate party I can know it from her, then, on the other hand, the church has already grown old іncoli practically not ... that і I joke with options ...

        • BB

I do not suggest buying 70-300. I recommend purchasing a flash for shooting in dark rooms.

  • Max

Normal photo with 5D MarkII with Nikon 24 2.8. Shot on a facsimile shutter, with shutter speed and a tripod.

  • Igor

Cool lens sharp, I advise you to use on FF. Sharper than Nikon 17 35 2.8 and Nikon 24 70 2.8

  • Maxim Shekhovtsov

Have a nice day! What manual shirik can you recommend for nikon d 7000. I was thinking of taking nikon 24 1:28 AI-S, but now I doubt it (((advise Soviet or Nikon! Plizz !!!

    • Onotole

Bower (aka Samyang) 14 / 2.8. 24mm too narrow for crop.

  • Igor

Greetings! Need help with a choice. I thought about buying this lens. Now there is Samyang 14mm f / 2.8 on which it is very difficult to put filters. Who has experience with both lenses, how is Nikon better or worse in quality? I take landscapes and astrophotographs. Thanks!

    • Rodion

There is samyang 24 / 1.8 like, it is clearly better for an astrophoto to be.

  • koba

One question to the owners or dear Arkady - tell me please, can the aperture switch be fixed at intermediate values, or only at fixed 5,6 - 8 - 11, etc.? Thanks!

    • Vyacheslav

No, not a single old Nikon has intermediate steps, the diaphragm changes with clicks entirely by one step. But in principle, you can just catch an intermediate position between clicks, it will hold.

    • Michael

No you can not. But in AI (AI-S) versions, this retainer can be easily removed.

  • Oleg

Can anyone tell me the difference between these lenses, well, except for the shanks. Which is better? . The review is different. Structurally similar to the one on the right, only the focus ring has a longer turning distance
