Basic information about Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6

Basic information about Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6

Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6 - one of Nikon's first autofocus telephoto lenses. Non-d type... As befits old Nikon lenses - its manufacture is of a very high standard. This is not cheap Chinese 'plastic', but an amazing 'metal monster'. Nikon AF 75-300 / 4.5-5.6 is indeed very well made, mostly made of glass and metal, and therefore weighs just a little less than a kilogram. It's a pity that nowadays modern lens bodies are made of plastic, and lenses are becoming widely available 'consumer goods'.

Length Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6

Nikon AF 75-300 / 4.5-5.6 has a 'Full / Limit' focus limiter. In the 'Limit' position, focusing is available from infinity to 3 meters, or from 3 to 1.5 meters. In the 'Full' position, the lens uses the entire focusing distance range. To my surprise, the autofocus speed in 'Limit' mode was quite fast, and of course, in the 'Full' position the lens focuses very slowly. The focus ring is rubberized and rotates approximately 60 degrees at the 'Limit' position and 120 degrees at the 'Full' position. Most likely the fast autofocus is due to the slow travel of the focus ring, and because of this, manual focusing is not very convenient. When focusing, the front lens both rotates and extends forward - this is the lens's only serious drawback.

The zoom ring has a ribbed plastic grip. The Nikon AF 75-300 / 4.5-5.6 is a piston-type lens - in order to change the focal length, pull the ring towards you or away from you, and not rotate, as is done with conventional lenses. When you zoom in, the lens changes its size. I didn't like the fact that it is difficult to achieve smooth focal length changes with this lens, and often the zoom ring will bounce and ring hard when set to the extreme positions. And the lens also changes the focal length under its own weight (the lens trunk moves out by itself).

Nikon AF 75-300 / 4.5-5.6 has a tripod foot that rotates freely around the lens and is clamped with a special lock. The tripod foot cannot be removed from the lens. Important: the lens has an aperture control ring. In order for the lens to start working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the F / 32 value using the aperture control ring on the lens itself and fix it with a special button. This button has an orange color, it is easy to find on the lens near the iris control ring. After such a manipulation, it will be possible to control the diaphragm from the camera, like with modern lenses, in more detail in the section on Non-G Lenses.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Conclusions:

Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6 is a very interesting lens - it has an unusual appearance, fast focusing and low distortion. It's a pity, at open apertures the lens loses in sharpness to modern analogues, but photography is not rich in sharpness alone :)

old titan says a lot of things)))
Thank you very much for another interesting review !!!!

  • kiev_poznyaki

Thank you so much, Arkady! As always great. I’m looking for such a lens for myself because I was inflamed with the desire to replace my D80 full frame in the face of D610.
A couple of days ago, you convinced me of 24-85, now this one.

    • anonym

I also aimed at the D610, but the announced price for it in Ukraine is practically the same as for the D800: (... ?!

    • Ivan

And why did you decide this particular lens? I will be 70-210, but I advise you! And 610 I've been waiting for a month, I just can’t wait)))

      • kiev_poznyaki

yet 300mm is almost one and a half times more than 210)
And the announced price is not a problem. In a month or two it will fall.
And until our stores sell all the stocks of the D600, it’s not necessary to wait for the appearance of 610 (

  • Maksim

Not a topic descho, Nikon presenting a new camera http://www.nikon.ua/uk_UA/product/digital-cameras/slr/professional/df

    • kiev_poznyaki

The idea is wonderful and has been in the air for a long time. It is surprising that so far no one has implemented it.
I’m waiting for the modern music center to finally appear in the style of the good old Sharp two-cassette player. With pleasure I would have bought myself.

      • Denis

        :)) Sharp-cue two-cassette player !!! :) I have such a Sharp (model WF-970) works flawlessly almost every day since 1998! Miracle technique…. did once ...

        • Maksim

The two-cassette Sharp is no worse in the darkness of the photo :-), if only to know the new normal magnetophone in the fire, I had to take that old Panasonic on one cassette and one disk (without MP3), more than a new one, such a mute dumb, like bullshit alone, but with a normal sound, that with normal autonomous sounding is dumb, iPhonei, Afpadi ... all є, a normal recorder is dumb !!!

      • Maksim

My friend !!! Yes, you have “upset” us :-) Blin, not checking such a price tag, thinking D90 to remember, that bachu is not destiny! Ale dyakuyu for a link!

  • Andrei

Every time I look at / read reviews of old IRON-QUALITY optics, I feel a sense of pride for those people whose minds and hands created them, for those times when there was no plastic sherpatreba and for the fact that today they got a second life at the Central Exhibition Hall! Even more pleased that today there are people who can appreciate these lenses with dignity!

  • Oleksandr

Є such a miracle in usuom, especially color.

  • Maksim

    It was like that.
    Great lens!
put on the Nikon D80 and film F80.
    Recommend.

  • Artyom

Arkady thanks for the review of a wonderful lens. After looking at the photos from your review, I realized that this is exactly the telephoto lens that I need! Most of all I was surprised by the volume that the lens gives! This is the best lens of the 70-300mm range, if you do not take into account the modern af-s version!

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, thanks for the article, you have a mistake - "Everything was shot in the control mode of xsnaps N"

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Maria

This lens is a legacy. At one time they treated him very carefully - not a scratch on the case! Help me sell, what is its price? I don't understand anything about photography myself ...

    • Nicholas

Maria, please inform by e-mail film_135@ukr.net my phone number. If your lens is in excellent condition (without scratches, fungus, haze, etc.), perhaps I will purchase it from you.

  • Dmitriy

Hello! Tell me from cheap telephoto lenses, which is better - a lens from the review or Tamron AF 200-400 mm F / 5.6 LD 75DN?

  • Sergei

The lens slides out when focusing ... That is, do not put on the filter?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Filters are mounted like on any other lens; filters with a diameter of 62 mm are needed.

  • Andrei

I will sell the same lens in perfect condition, without defects, scratches, etc.
    Price 3200 UAH.
    0681306220 Call)))

  • Sirusvirus

“… Has an unusual appearance, fast focusing and little distortion”

    Fast focusing ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, as described in the review, in Limit mode it focuses quickly.

      • Sirusvirus

        I agree :)

One question - do you think this lens has nice bokeh for portraits?
If you can remember (mentally compare with https://radojuva.com.ua/2014/04/nikon-af-70-300-mm-4-5-6g/). I pleased my 70-300 with only 2 things - interesting color rendition + very nice bokeh, but I sold it and I want to buy 75-300 ... Only I would like to know about bokeh

        • Lynx

A dark telephoto is suitable for portraits somewhat limited in principle.

  • Sirusvirus

I would like to be able to download RAW files, I wonder how well things are with sharpness.

In a good light, a dark telephoto gives a pretty good picture, but you do not have to demand more for this price.

For a trip to Kenya, delved into the zooms for a long time. Thanks to this review, I took this glass for a bundle with the Nikon D700. Worked with a bang! Almost never removed from the carcass during the safari. The reserve held 24-70. Almost not needed. Cling only to landscapes. Still, the hole at 24-70 will be more.
75-300 gave a warm and contrasting picture. Direct delight of some kind of "In the world of animals" !!!
One inconvenience - a bit heavy at first. But I screwed the handle for remote release onto the tripod ring - it became easier and more convenient.
I took the glass straight from Japan. In great condition. Here is only one glitch was discovered in the early days. Sharpness only at the far end. I just pull the trombone towards myself and that's it! Autofocus buzzes - twists and "zero phase". I was driven straight into the depression.
Then in the evening, at Ambosselli, he sat down in the room, swallowed for the courage of the viskar, took a pair of nail scissors and started the operation. Everything is neat and without trembling hands. He unscrewed the front lens and found that the inner lens unit freely hangs in the seat socket. He screwed it all the way with the same scissors. Checked for self-twisting. It sits tight. Everything! From that moment, the lens earned five plus points! As a reward I drank a glass of viskar (it was December 31) and went to the New Year's disco.
I think that the lens block got loose during shipment from Japan. I was glad that I had thought of the cause of the malfunction myself and eliminated it myself.
In short, cheap and cheerful with excellent quality of both glass and its cost of 7 rubles.

  • Zivert

It is a pity that you can not edit the message. Mistake Autofocus was not on the long end.

  • Nikolaich

For the second year I have been working with this wonderful glass: at first it was on the D7100 - the pictures were just “normal”, but when I moved to the D750 - here the result became really pleasing. The FX is sharp on all holes throughout the focal range. Color and contrast are surprisingly expensive. You quickly get used to the weight and dimensions - they are generally within reasonable limits (Sigma 50mm Art weighs 815g).

    • Xpro

Good shot, joyful disinterested) Is there anything else with this glass?

    • Simon

I peer into this picture I peer and I don’t see how you can scream from here?

    • Andrei

And tell me please, what was missing to get excellent pictures on the crop?
      Resolution?

  • Anton

    Hello.
Arkady, Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6 can be used for macro photography?
    Thank you!

  • Andrei

I had such a lens. Of the many lenses that I had this one was very sorry to sell. The combination of image with sharpness simply pleasing to the eye. In terms of sharpness, my copy was superior to 3 different copies of the Nikon 70-300 VR in all focal lengths, and especially 200-300 mm.

  • maksim

All pipets ((((((((((28-105 took I can’t get enough of.
And now it’s 75-300 that caught fire very much. Well, I’d be there very much.
And the total money is 3000 UAH what should I do ((((
In short, one sadness, it would be better if I didn’t know for it (((
Damn, and here spring is still, the birds of the bitch arrived, there are no leaves!

    • BB

Either save money, or look towards Sigmo-Tamronov

      • maksim

        Thank you.
I want it precisely metallic Nikon 75-300.
So there is still a snag "straight problem" I want the serial number to start 20 .... 89-91g 30 ... .91-93g

  • Andrei.

I want to note that for all Nikon 75-300 instances the mayonnaise is screwed with 1 blackened screw and the rest of the screws are in the color of the bayonet (metallic color). By the way, this observation can be included in the article.

    • Andrei.

Apology for a typo. This is all auto word matching on the phone. Place the word mayonnaise, the word Bayonet.
