Review of the Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 MS

According provided by lens MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 many thanks Ivan Kosarekov.

Review of the Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 MS

Review of the Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 MS

MC Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 is a very interesting Soviet lens for medium format cameras Kiev 88 / Salyut with 'B' mount. Vega-28V is considered one of the best Soviet medium format lenses. Outwardly, he is very similar to another medium format - MC Volna-3 2.8 / 80. The lens has a good combination of focal length and aperture, which makes it convenient to use on modern full-format cameras.

MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120

MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120

Now such a lens is sold for $ 150-200. This is due to the fact that Vega-28B is able to create a rather interesting picture. The copy that came to my review really creates an excellent volumetric picture with interesting bokeh, but at the same time MC Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 is very much afraid of back and side light. It seems that his lenses are devoid of multi-coating. The lens is sharp enough at F / 2.8, but still I expected a slightly different quality.

MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120

MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120

MC Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 is all made of metal and glass, weighs almost half a kilogram. The focus ring is non-rubberized and rotates 270 degrees, focusing from 1,2 meters to infinity. It's just a pity that such a legendary lens has aperture blades with a metallic sheen, which only interferes when working in backlight. The number of petals is 8 pieces. The main 'trump card' of the lens is bokeh and 'plastic' in photographs.

I would not buy such a lens for cropped cameras, and good bokeh can be obtained with a simpler lens, for example, some Pentacon 2.8 / 135 or Tair-11 2.8/133.

The image from the MS Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 is quite different from Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Biometar 2.8 / 120.

Conclusions:

As I wrote at the beginning of the review, the MC Vega-28V 2.8 / 120 is a very interesting lens with its obvious advantages. Now such a lens is difficult to find on sale, and the price is often overstated. MC Vega-28V 2.8 / 120, I would recommend only for medium or full format. On a full-frame camera, such a lens can serve as an excellent portrait lens.

  • Egor

Arkady, why shouldn’t it be used on a crop?

    • Sergei

      There is no point:)
I apologize for being responsible for Arkady.

    • Novel

This lens covers a 60x60 mm frame; only the central part of it (18x24) is used on the crop. The rest of the rather heavy glass is worn “just like that”. The same, for example, concerns Jupiter 36 - a similar lens, “sharpened” for a crop, would weigh twice less.

The second criterion is sharpness. For SF cameras, the lens resolution was less than for a full frame, while modern cropped cameras require even sharper lenses. But this is all in theory. :)

In practice, if the size does not bother you, you can also vilify it. I really liked his drawing, although I didn’t get my own - $ 200. - a lot, already thinking about something modern. But I use Vega with pleasure. She is less “plastic”, but with her own charm. And I even really liked the salutovsky industry. So these three lenses (Vega-12, Vega-12, Industar-28) are highly recommended to try on a full frame and, in principle, are quite suitable for use on a crop if you manage to get hold of adapters (especially from fireworks).

    • Victor

The resolution in the center and on the periphery is different. When using CMOS matrices 15x25 and 24x36 mm, we select the best central, uniform spot.

  • Sasha

And what is needed on the crop?

    • Lynx

      other

    • Nikita

And on the crop, I personally liked the takumar SMS 1.8 55mm. It also distinguishes an object from the background elegantly, sharp in the open. But I sold it because you can’t call him a full-time one on a crop. Pure portraiture. Within 2-3 tr. can be found on the Internet. I bought with about. Cyprus and I was kind of lucky and got in the original leather case with all the covers of perfect quality.

  • Sergei

“I would not buy such a lens for cropped cameras, but good bokeh can be obtained with a simpler lens, for example, some Pentacon 2.8 / 135 or Tair-11 2.8 / 133.”

Arkady chewed everything for you :)

    • Victor

Tair-11 135 mm 24-35 lines / mm cannot be compared with lenses for 6x6 cm cameras with a resolution of 48-54 lines / mm and aperture ratio D = 2,8. First, get acquainted with the technical characteristics of the lenses of Salyut, Kiev-88 cameras, and then talk about the relative use of lenses. Those who take a portrait and evaluate it can use bottle glass, you don’t care.

      • Victor

I looked specifically at the guide, at Traira-11 at center 28, at the edge of 18 lines / mm, this is very bad.

      • B. R. P.

And how many of these lines / mm SF get on the crop matrix 1,5? And what kind of a bridle is D?

  • Eugene

under the photo of the lens on the CZK signature correct

    • Oleg

The camera is the ZK, not the ZZK. If I'm not mistaken.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Ivan

I really like the lens design and ergonomics. In the open, as Arkady wrote, I still wanted a bit more sharpness, but for a portrait portrait it’s generally normal. If he had good control and side light, then it would be generally excellent. A blend helps partially save the situation.

  • Alex

And how is it compared to helios 44-2?

    • Novel

Heavier. What other criteria are there to compare? :)

  • Gennady

I have the same lens. In the bright sun, the contrast drops, and everything is fine, you do not need to edit the editor. http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/graf-shaposhnikov/ Thanks a lot to Arkady!

  • Alexander

I use on canon 600d. I really like his bokeh. Before him I used jupiter 37a (I bought it for 60 ye). For my taste, vega drawing is much more pleasant. Excellent color rendering. As a result, he sold Jupiter. I bought vegan 28B for 150 ye in average condition and I do not regret + 30 ye adapter. The focus ring of Jupiter is more convenient (much wider) and smoother. The crop is long, but it is quite comfortable to use.
Again, for me its main feature is bokeh. I like it, and that's it.

    • Andrei

Well, of course you compared) 80 / 2.8 and 135 / 3.5 are simply indecent to compare, also on crop.
      Sincerely.

      • Alexander

On vege 120 focal, on Jupiter 135. The comparison is quite logical. The larger the focal point, the larger the blur circles can be. Basically, it's all the same for mugs. The main thing is how it washes. And it blurs the background beautifully. Anyway, look at the pictures of Arkady. Fairy tale.

        • Andrei

my lens is very similar to wave-3, so I thought automatically, you excuse me: -D
but still the focal, the aperture ratio and the scheme are completely different, you can compare, but very conditionally ...

Vega 28v through the rings mounted on a 35mm camera of the camera. the pictures are super.

The girl is so pretty, damn it. And who is this, no secret?

  • Zhenya

Arkady, found Vega 28 in the house. Am I so pony to install it on my Nikon D700 you need as many as 2 adapters?

    • Jury

      One adapter is needed - K88 / N (Kiev 88 / Nikon)

  • Zhenya

By the way, it’s interesting that the box says Vega 28 B and inside C)

  • максим

He gives surprises in the sun, remotely resembles a film. Great drawing with charisma. Very pleased with this lens. I bought for 200 cu 2 years ago and do not regret it. The drawing is much nicer than that of Helios 40 (for my taste), although it is extremely rare, and therefore it is not razed by gourmets.

  • Andreykonoplev

Hello, Arkady. I would like to buy Vega 28 in collector quality. Are there any sellers? Thanks.

    I will sell the Lens MS Vega-28B 120 mm f / 2.8 http://fotoselling.ru/products/23738772

    • Victor

St. Petersburg. At what price. Payment upon receipt.

  • Andrei

And who can tell where to buy an adapter for Vega 28V on Canon?

    • Rodion

In nature, the adapter is so rare that it costs much more than the already expensive Vega-28.
In short, you need to make it yourself.

    • Alexander

There is a pentacon 6-nikon adapter and an adapter ring from mount B to B, the price is generally $ 26. Arax adapter ring, and adapter on Ali.ex.

      • anonym

There is a ring transition from "C" to "B" in Moscow. Search on Moscow sites. Write a letter and send.

  • Andrei

Well, I'm not a turner and not a milling machine operator.

    • Rodion

Forgive me for my French, but I myself assembled a completely tolerable adapter from shit and sticks, more precisely - from trimming a plastic pipe and trimming an M42 macro ring.
Try it - even such a temporary solution works quite well as a permanent one. The main thing is more epoxy and no distortions.

      • Victor

On the knees, the adapter is difficult to make, the whole thing is in the distortion of the optical axis. You can't do without a good turner. I also use a piece of fan pipe, but only to determine the rear flange - 38 mm. Then everything is professional.

  • Serg57

I bought myself last year after reading this review. In appearance and configuration - the quality is "zero". I liked the work very much. Preferences for camera combinations quickly emerged. Combined with Nikon d600 - interesting, but requires too much mental work. I like it very much in combination with d200. So I use it. If I want to have fun - I take d200 and slowly “dreary” shoot. Then I can't tear myself away from the portraits. I'm filming my grandchildren - there are very few good shots. Manual focus - it's so manual….

  • Arthur

How to make an adapter for this lens on a Sony E mount?
I used macro rings for Kiev-6C
Description of the stages - here:
    http://mihanev.ru/blog/vega-28v.html
It took no more than three hours to work

  • Alexander

For Vega 28B: Pentacon Six - M42, adapter for medium format lenses + m42 - canon. Perhaps, for modification 28B, you can also do with two adapters. 20 ye from China. By the way, the lens is good. Worth the money)

    • anonym

Yes! The glass gives joy from photographing. After using it, viewing captured photos turns into a process of getting joy.

  • anonym

The lens is very interesting. It somehow highlights the blurred background in a special way. Often in photographs it turns out that the background becomes more important and more interesting than the object itself. All this, of course, applies to shooting at a fully open or slightly closed aperture. This happens, of course, not always, but only under a certain set of circumstances. His blur is, of course, VERY interesting and beautiful! A lovely sight! The glass itself is sharp. In general, the lens is really VERY good and a must for anyone interested in optics. (In comparison with the medium format "Wave - 3" it is much more interesting and noble, perhaps. They are slightly similar, but you can always distinguish and highlight the pictures taken by "Vega - 28"! Since many photos are obtained close to the characteristics of MASTERPIECES!): -) I definitely recommend "Vega - 28" for use!

  • Vlad

Advise me a not very expensive Soviet portrait painter, in addition to my whale and Helios 81 N (D 3100) ... Helios is good, but I would like to have even more FR, at the same time so that you can photograph some kind of bird, or a daughter growing up from afar ... between Kaleinar 5 N (a little expensive, contagion), Jupiter 37 A (I'm afraid I won't be able to change the shank), or Granite 11 (a bit dark for me) ... What do you say?

    • zengarden

On Kaleinar 5H, prices are usually driven up by greedy sellers; in good condition it costs about 3000 rubles. Jupiter 37A often comes with a Nikon shank; or, if only the M42 is included, the shank can be purchased (Chinese). It is easy to change with a watch screwdriver. Prices are usually from 1500-2000 (the lens was produced in very large series). In any case, you need to look at the quality of a particular copy and not chase the MC version (the difference is insignificant there).
Both are not bad as budget televisions, but no more. It’s better to buy some Nikon 100mm E-series for the same money.

      • Vlad

        What about Granite?

        • zengarden

          This one? https://radojuva.com/2012/04/obzor-granit-11n-80-200/
It’s also not bad, probably, if it is caught in good condition.

          • Vlad

This one (Granite 11 N) can be taken for 500 hryvnia (1000 rubles), Calainars start from 1400 hryvnia, and Jupiters from 700, but you need to buy a tail, it will cost the same thousand ... I think Granite will be good for this money ... PS IMHO prices for Kaleinar and Tair are exaggerated by hucksters, since for this money you can take with autofocus ... They probably also sit on this site :)

    • Victor

In principle, for digital cameras with a sensitivity of up to 3200-820000 ASA (Din), the aperture is not significant. Here, after sunset, it’s a complete nightmare from electronics, so the more the aperture, the better.

  • Alexey

Medium format optics need to be tested on a medium format. If you put it on a narrow screen (for solidity called "full frame"), then we will see about 25% of the picture that gives optics. And the individual picture appears due to precisely that part of the frame that is located at the edges, where the sharpness falls and which does not fall on the digital matrix.

    • Rodion

At least test it on the SF - most of it will be put on the MF.

    • Victor

The larger the serviced format, the better, because the central part of the projection is cut out. Take lenses for 30x40 cm format from a wooden box for printed circuit boards.

      • B. R. P.

Lenses for BF lin \ mm may be even smaller than SF. And what are the focal lengths? At least a staff for 30x40 cm.

      • Rodion

A proportional increase in the lens leads to a proportional increase in aberrations)))

        • Denis Korzun

This rule does not work in all cases (A proportional increase in the lens leads to a proportional increase in aberrations)!

For example, I have a BF lens (aerospace), Carl Zeiss Pleogon A2 4 / 153mm is designed for 240 × 240mm format, its resolution in the center is at least 200 lines per mm and in the corners the same way - by the way, a German specialist checked the lens for me - so there were about 900 lines in the center!

There is also Aero-Ektar 24 ″ f6.0 (approximately 610mm) - designed for 9x18 ″ (228x457mm) format, its average resolution is about 160 lines per mm.

So they can - when necessary, but an ordinary consumer does not need it - apparently so optic builders and specials think so. offices! :)
