Review Yongnuo YN565EX Speedlite

The YN565EX Speedlite is another Chinese flash from Yongnuo. I got a review of the brand new YN565EX for Canon. Yongnuo is tricky and measures the guide number with the flash zoom set to maximum, which gives a guide number of 58m.

Here are the key features of this flash:

  • The YN565EX's flash head rotates 270 degrees: 180 to the left, 90 to the right. Up / down the head is lowered 90 degrees.
  • The zoom ranges from 24 to 105mm, the same range of the head zoom for the flash YN568EX. When installing diffuser cards the flash zoom does not change.
  • The flash has a large monochrome display with orange backlight. The backlight turns on when you press the corresponding button.
  • Flash control is tricky, it’s difficult to understand without instructions.
  • YN565EX supports ETTL Mode, M Mode and Strobe Mode (Multi). Flash has no high speed sync mode.
  • Flash may be remotely controlled using the system Nikon CLS Nikon cameras / flashes and Canon cameras / flashes. The YN565EX can be controlled remotely by any other commander flash unit. To enter Slave remote control mode, press and hold the 'Zoom' button. Then use the joystick to select the desired group and channel. In remote control mode, automatic ETTL mode is available without high speed sync support. The flash can simultaneously receive control commands from both Canon and Nikon flashes. You can customize the work only from Canon and only from Nikon. I think this confusion is unnecessary - since they made a flash for Canon, why add gadgets from another system there and cross a hedgehog with a snake?
  • With S1 mode you can ignite the Yongnuo YN565EX flash at the first light pulse from the master flash. In S1 and S2 modes, the power is manually set, from 1/128 to 1/1 (full). In S2 mode the flash is ignited without any problems on the second (or last) flash pulse. In S2 mode, the YN565EX is convenient to ignite with a flash that works in ETTL mode. S1 and S2 modes cannot work in high-speed sync mode. The same modes can be found in a very cheap flash Yongnuo Speedlite YN460-II и YN460. Attention: The light trap, which is responsible for receiving command pulses, is located on the front panel of the flash, therefore, to synchronize with the flash, you need to place the YN568EX so that it “sees” the command pulse of another flash. In remote control mode, a single red LED on the front of the flash blinks to indicate that the flash is in remote control mode and ready to fire. You can configure the YN565EX in remote control mode to beep for accuracy and notify of successful recharge after each pulse. Attention: Yongnuo YN565EX cannot control other flashes.
  • Flash alerts can be turned off. The Yongnuo YN565EX has a flash-ready indicator button, when you press it, a test pulse occurs.
  • The flash has a diffuser card (wide-angle diffuser) and a reflector card. It is very difficult to get them out of the flash. The first time I pulled out cards with a clerical knife. The Chinese apparently made up their minds.
  • The flash is attached to the camera using a spinning disk. To install or remove the flash from the camera, you need spend some time to twist / unscrew the locking disc.
  • In ETTL mode, you can set the flash output correction to 5 ev in increments of 1/3 ev
  • The flash has a special auto focus lamp.
  • Yongnuo YN565EX is made in China, the body is made of nice matte plastic. The foot of the shoe is metal. On the flash there is sync connector studio flash PC sync and connector for external power unit SF-18C and SF-17C. The battery cover, to my surprise, is made in good faith :)
  • A cloth cover comes with the flash. The cover cannot be attached to the belt. There is a compartment for a flash stand in the case.

I frankly did not like the flash: there is no high-speed sync mode, a tricky menu, an incomprehensible mixture of Canon ETTL with Nikon I-TTL, the difficulty in removing the diffuser card and reflector card, long-spinning disk lock for installation on the camera, etc. YN568EX It has the same button interface, but it is more intuitive to manage it. When working on my Canon 350D ETTL (E-TTL II version) worked fine, but not perfect.

You can see the price for this hereor in the price block located below:
All prices on YN565

The cheapest is to buy Yongnuo flashes at aliexpress.

Conclusions:

Yongnuo YN565EX Speedlite is a good Chinese flash for Canon cameras with automatic ETTL mode, it can also work in automatic slave mode. Can be ignited by command flashes on the corresponding Canon cameras (7D, 650D, 60D, 600D) and Nikon (D7000, D90 etc.). If your camera does not have a flash that works in command mode, then the YN565EX can be set on fire using S1 and S2 modes, or using another external flash in Master mode.

For those wishing to purchase - there are prices and cheaper (he took 565 and 560 (1).

  • Sergei

Yongnuo YN565EX Speedlite is a great budget option for beginners and more. I saw a similar YN in many wedding photographers. I myself have been using this for over a year in the most severe mode and do not experience any difficulties in management. Managed delivery of less than 150 dollars.

  • mig

Really sophisticated menu. But, I think that for 100 euros with delivery, a good flash. I’m buying the second one, both are working stably. Of course, there is better.

  • Vadim

I constantly read and re-read Radozhiva. Thank you Arkady for your work. A lot of informative and most importantly often appears here. You are a real workaholic. But I have some comments about this article. I have been using this flash for more than a year, well, not every day, but, if necessary, in conjunction with the D5100. My never let me down. I have never experienced any inconvenience. Installation on the shoe is very fast, just like Nikonovsky’s relatives, fixing also takes some 2 seconds and does not bother at all. Removing the diffuser is also no problem, just pulled with a fingernail and that's it, but the card is not removed separately, but it is removed without problems with the diffuser. If the diffuser is not needed, it simply slides back, and the reflector card remains extended.
High-speed synchronization is really a necessary thing, but on my camera and on all the Nikon junior cameras, it doesn’t matter whether it is on the flash or not, since the cameras themselves do not have such a function. I don’t know how on the Kenons, but I think the picture is the same.
And honestly speaking, I did not understand about TTL - "normal, but not ideal ..." - how's that? I understand it works - it does not work, that is, it shines well or does not overexpose. I had no problems because of the flash. Well, with the price you went a little too far. I paid UAH 1350, which is about 160 green. Relatives are about 2-3 times more expensive and for an amateur, it seems to me they are not justified.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. All flash units get both the card and the diffuser right away.
      2. I had a version for kenon and I played with it on the old 350d, which had a lot of overexposed pictures, so I wrote it as it is. Indeed, just like that on 565 and 560-2, the card is damn hard to get. Maybe a scatter in the copies, Chinese products, right?
      3. I do not indicate prices, it's just a script pulls them up.
      :)

    • Lynx

Yukins give "normal measurement with TTL" only when the flash is directed clearly forward at the object.
When you try to use a "diffuser" or "from the ceiling", it gives a very strong overexposure and you have to "trim".
At least, I had to deal with just such a TTL problem.

      • balu

Exactly! And so it is! A correction of ± 5 steps is not true, it barely gives up to 1.5 degrees!

    • Novel

At Canon, the presence of high-speed synchronization only depends on the flash. If there is a fuss, it will work with both 300D and 1D X)

  • Victor

I liked the flash. I bought for my Nikon 5100 for $ 100 with free shipping (see. http://ali.pub/2i8e62) There were no overexposed shots.

  • igor

Victor, skіlki spalah yoshov to you .. well, the exact delivery?

  • Alex

What kind of powder is more powerful this 565 or 568?

  • Nazar

Please tell me from what kind of fumes the lamp is suitable for YN 565. Thank you very much

  • balu

I have been using the products of the Jungs for the second year, Canon 622 synchronous and SF 18 blocks are all higher than the roof !!! N Oh! 565 FLASH under Kenon - rare sucks! Solid problems! Took 10dek2013 in Strobist near the South railway station. In the morning I took it back, checked two more flashes — all the same! Now about the problems 1-E-TTL works with wild overcooking both near 2 ~ 4m and 12 ~ 15m, I'm silent about the macro. Tinkered with her until the morning! 2-declared correction value ± steps-bullshit! Really barely up to 1,5! Maybe it’s such a party, but there’s NO past confidence! PS all this was carried out in comparison CANON Speedlite EX580 ll.

  • Paul

I'm sorry, a little off topic, but will it work on the Nikon D5100?

  • Daria

About “overpriced” is not true. On the same aliexpress I took for 80 bucks with free shipping, why in Ukrainian. stores draw such prices - it is not clear (that is, it is clear that everyone wants money).

And the question is a little ... and will someone teach me to work with her? : D My first flash and can't figure it out)

    • Ivan

Please throw a link, where on Ali for 80 bucks? I find 105 only ..

    • Dmitriy

The question of the price of Chinese goods is a matter of service and convenience. Now it costs about $ 100 http://infoto.com.ua/studio-equipment/flash/yongnuo-yn-565ex-canon
+ $ 20 to the price - 25% - many products now have this. Sometimes you need to buy right now and there is no way to wait, or not everyone can then challenge the purchase if the product arrives defective.

  • Nikko

I bought a version for Nikon, put it on D70s, the flash icon appeared on the display, but the camera locks, focuses, but does not remove. And the flash seems to slow down, reacts to the buttons after three seconds. What can i do wrong?

    • Occupation

please tell me you found out what the problem was, I now have the same situation I do not know what to do !!!

      • Nikko

No, I didn't solve the problem. I found a way to get around it - to seal the contact with tape on the shoe, bottom right, if you hold the camera with the lens up. So the flash works normally in manual mode.

However, after six months of operation, the flash stopped working. The transistor that controls the lamp has burned out. Interestingly, the same problem often occurs with Canon 580EXII flashes. Disassembly and research showed that the head, the high-voltage part, and the control units for the lamp of our flash are licked off this canon, with all its bugs and flaws. The ignition electrode is sometimes shot into the reflector. The transistor was replaced, the lamp assembly was finalized, as is done with the kenons - I connected the ignition of the lamp with the reflector. and the flash worked as before.

It’s a little unclear why SpeedLite is present in the name if it does not support HSS / FP synchronization ???

  • Maria

The question is already worrying a couple of months.
The ready light is constantly green and, of course, the flash cannot flash. This has already been happening for about 2 months. What should I do?
    Help me please.

    • STIV

Repair needed. I had a similar case (after a year of work). Gave local "kulibins" - no result. The supplier also advises to send it to the factory for repair. I'll try to do so.

  • Valery

how to turn off the beep. Help. Thank you.

  • Svetlana

I am also very tormented by the sound signal, can I turn it off? Thanks!

    • STIV

      Download the Russian-language instruction - section 7:
      Fn NO: 14
      SO nd on - enabled
      SO nd - - off

Hello, Arkady. Recently tidied up the old CANON EOS 3000N Date film camera. The camera is working, all parameters work out. There is a flash 568EXII. When installed on the camera does not work. The focal length of the camera receives the flash. Often in your reviews I see the old film NIKON. How does it work with new flashes? Is compatibility possible at all? On the 550D, all modes work out.

  • anonym

Good afternoon everyone! I have been using this listing (under Nikon) for about a year, on the Nikon D300 (2 pcs.) Rarely on the D7000. I use it often, the problems that the descriptions in this review did not find, maybe they aren’t on models under Nikon, since both lists work out at 100 for their price. Of the minuses, as this lack of an Akum charge indicator has already been pointed out, it is simply annoying to such an extent that it is evil, at first for a transcript, and then for forgetting to charge it;) And not quite convenient fasteners, although it is already used to and it seems that such a method is no more comfortable (fast) but stronger than the eccentric method. Also, sometimes the high-speed synchronization mode is not enough, as Arkady wrote, but as for me it is absolutely not critical (although it's nice when it is) !!

P.I. What Arkady noted in more than one article did not indicate how long this or that copy lasts for long, this copy works out on fully charged Sanyo Eneloop 2500 Akum about 800-1000 piks. What is sometimes small, sometimes normal, it is difficult to compare since situations are different.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I do not indicate, because the number of responses depends on both the ack and the output power.

  • anonym

People, on Nikon D80 is it worth taking this or is there anything better?

  • Vitalij

Good day. I stand in front of the vibrator of the fir on the D5100. More co-pay and take a sat 800 chi qiu? I’m repairing it, take a look at photography in commercials.

  • TVU

I bought a daviche in exchange for the SB700, which had gone to another world. There was no money for my own, but the event was on the nose. I didn’t expect it myself: TTL- works perfectly, there are no complaints about the build quality, the AF backlighting is accurate, the menu is tricky (maybe after the usual Nikonovsky), and to hell with it after reading a tricky instruction everything became very clear. On a 2500mA battery I shot somewhere 1000 shots, on the Litions I shot about 2500. In short, I’m quite satisfied, even so far I decided to postpone my native purchase.

    • Jury

      What are you shooting?

  • Benjamin

    Good afternoon Arkady!
The functions of FEB and FEC are clear.
I ask you to explain the FEV function in this flash.

    • Taras

If you mean “FV lock” - then this is Flash Value Lock - lock the value of flash power. If you set the AE-L / AF-L button to this type of lock, then the flash, when you press this button on the camera, will issue a test pulse to determine the exposure, and when changing the composition, lighting conditions will still give a pulse of the previously set power. On the D5100, I have no way to attach this function to the AE-L / AF-L.

      • Benjamin

        Thank you.

  • Benjamin

The other day I received the YN565EX for Nikon.
When the flash is charged, the green color of the indicator changes to red.
My question is: With a TTL flash in the hot shoe, will the flash display show the zoom value when the focal length is changed on the lens?

    • Taras

The flash display in TTL mode shows the current flash zoom corresponding to the focal length of the lens (24 to 105 mm)

      • Benjamin

In M mode, by briefly pressing the ZOOM button and pressing the direction buttons, I can change the flash of the flash in this mode; at the same time, the flash zoom is audible. The range of lighting distances also varies.
When you press the OK button, the indicator stops at the selected value of FR.
When you switch to TTL mode and change the FR of the lens, the FR indicator on the display does NOT change. Flash zoom operation is NOT audible. The range of lighting distances is NOT changing.
Maybe I didn’t do something in the flash settings or is it a flash malfunction?

        • Taras

It is impossible to turn off the function of adjusting the focus of this flash to the lens phased array through the menu. Together with D5100, this function works in all flash modes: TTL, M, Multi. It means that you have incompatibility at the software level (mismatch of command codes when the flash and camera communicate)

  • Benjamin

Arkady, I want to note some more properties of the YN565EX i-TTL flashes
On the camera itself, there is no way to switch the standard i-TTL mode to the balanced i-TTL BL mode. However, this can be done by changing the metering mode on the camera itself.
When the camera sets the spot metering mode to the exposure, the flash will be in standard i-TTL mode; when the camera sets the metering modes to center-weighted and matrix, the flash will be in i-TTL balanced BL mode.
In addition, it is interesting that in the Nikon proprietary software ViewNX2 EXIF defines this flash as ... SB-800.

    • Benjamin

I will add. Interestingly, ViewNX @ Portadle software recognizes this flash as ... SB-900.

  • Taras

An interesting feature of this flash on the D5100: with the “red-eye reduction” mode enabled in the camera menu, when you press the shutter button fully, there is a 1 second pause before firing. When this is done with the built-in flash, the autofocus-assist lamp illuminates before the release, whose role is to make the pupils of the eyes narrow and thus reduce the red reflection of the fundus. And with Yongnuo flash, the AF illuminator on the camera does not work. The camera may think that red-eye reduction is unnecessary when using an external flash. After all, the greater the distance from the optical axis of the lens to the flash reflector, the less likely red eyes will appear.

    • Benjamin

But is it because this happens that when an external flash is inserted into the camera’s hot camera, the built-in flash is turned off together with all its functions, including “suppressing the red-eye effect”?

      • Taras

Probably. Obviously, the camera has a rigidly written sequence diagram of the AF, shutter and backlight operation order. And when the latter is turned off as unnecessary, the camera should work out a full cycle with a pause at the time the “sleeping” node is idle.
