Pentax K-5 review

According provided by camera Pentax K-5 many thanks to Petr Lewandovich. As soon as I was about to review the Pentax K-5, the new Pentax K-3 was released, but nevertheless the Pentax K-5, Pentax K-5 II and their modifications remain very good cameras.

Pentax K-5 review

Pentax K-5 review

The Pentax K-5 is an excellent advanced consumer DSLR camera. The Pentax K-5 was released in September 2010, and in 2012 it was updated to the Pentax K-5 II version. Many users are skeptical about Pentax products, arguing that Nikon, Canon and Sony are always one step ahead. Let me remind you that it was Pentax who revolutionized the camera industry by creating a modern look for a SLR with a quick-return mirror and pentaprism. At one time, the Pentax K-5 was one of the best DSLR APS-C cameras.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 uses a 16 MP sensor that allows you to take pictures of 4928 X 3264 pixels. It is interesting that the same sensor is used in a huge number of cameras: Nikon D5100, Nikon D7000Pentax K-30, Pentax K-50, Pentax K-500, Fuji X-Pro1, Pentax K-5 II, Pentax K-01, Sony a580, Sony A55, Sony A57, Sony NEX-5N. Apparently the sensor is really good, since so many cameras have been released on its basis. Pentax K-5 can work in the range of ISO 100-12.800, but if you enable the extended range in the menu, you can use ISO from 80 to 51.200. For example, Nikon D7000 with the same sensor can use the ISO range of 100-25.600. When I shot on the Pentax K-5 with the noise reduction function turned off at high sensitivity, then at ISO 100 to 1600 the picture was immediately shown on the camera display after the shutter was released, when switching to ISO 2000 and higher the picture was shown with some delay. I attribute such a delay to the fact that already at ISO 2000 the camera still turns on the noise reduction function. As for the noise level, the Pentax K-5 has no special problems with this, the main thing is not to use the 'inflated' values from 12.800 to 51.200. In the Pentax K-5, you can set its own level of noise reduction for each ISO range, for example, set the average noise reduction level for the ISO 800-1250 range, and turn off the noise reduction function for the 400-800 range.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 can shoot at 7 frames per second. This is a very good indicator. Burst speed is almost as fast as that of Nikon D300 (with booster) and Canon 7D. It is very strange that the optical viewfinder and monochrome display do not display the frame buffer capacity. If you turn off all the additional features that improve image quality and that reduce buffer capacity, the camera can continuously shoot approximately 25 photos in PEF or DNG format and 35 photos in JPEG format at maximum quality, after which the burst speed drops noticeably. For the test I used a Transcend card SD HC 16GB class 10.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 sample photo

But if you turn on all the functions at once: distortion correction, chromatic increase correction, noise reduction at high sensitivity, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds, light compensation, shadow compensation, then Pentax K-5 starts think very hard, each shot the camera processor processes more than 5 seconds! At this time, you can neither launch the menu, nor view the footage. Imagine, when I shot a series of 10 frames, I had to wait a whole minute while the camera processed and recorded the photo on a memory card, and all this time there is just an hourglass on the camera's display. Such serious brakes completely discourage shooting further. But still, in order not to waste time and not wait for the camera processor to process the picture, you can just continue shooting. I noticed that the 'corrections' function takes the most processing time. lens'.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 sample photo

It is very strange that the Pentax K-5 has very poor set of functions when working with video. Before recording a video, you can set only the aperture value and the correction exposure. There is no control during video recording. shutter speed, no aperture, no ISO. And most importantly, when recording a video, automatic focusing does not work, and sound is recorded from a monaural microphone. And the maximum quality Full HD 1920 * 1080 works only at 25 frames per second. In my opinion, video in the Pentax K-5 is implemented as badly as in the first, similar cameras from Nikon and Canon. But the built-in image stabilizer Shake reduction Helps to create videos without jerking pictures.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 sample photo

There is HDR function. When shooting, the camera takes several pictures without lowering the mirror, and then one of them. The process of merging images also takes a very, very long time.

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 sample photo

Pentax K-5 has a lot of useful settings, which are often specially cropped in advanced amateur cameras Nikon and Canon. For example, the Pentax K-5 has the function of quick enlargement of a picture; the magnification itself can be set in the menu. You can calibrate the display color and adjust the font size. There is an interesting function for masking pixels, setting focus priorities, fine-tuning autofocus. The Pentax K-5 can remotely control flashes in flash mode W. In the camera menu, you can configure the built-in flash only to emit command pulses. Of course, there is a focus trap that makes it very easy to use old non-autofocus optics. Pentax K-5 functionality is at a very high level, and you can study the camera and pick settings for a very long time. The camera is very pleasant to operate, has a large 3-inch display with 921.000 pixels, an additional monochrome display. Ergonomics at a high level.

If I had a choice between Pentax K-5 and Nikon D7000then I would choose Nikon D7000 due to the 39-point focusing system, a more thoughtful video, two slots for memory cards and a more thought-out system for remote control of external flashes. Still at Nikon D7000 Auto-ISO operates in 'M' mode, and there is a minimum excerpt sync with flash 1 / 320s versus 1 / 180s with Pentax K-5, both cameras support high-speed synchronization with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 s. Yes and it costs Nikon D7000 cheaper.

The direct competitor of Pentax K-5 is often called Canon 7D, I made a small tablet of the main parameters, the advantages are highlighted in green.

Conclusions:

The Pentax K-5 is a very good camera, perfect for advanced hobbyists. The Pentax K-5 has huge functionality for taking photos and a stripped down functionality for video shooting. I would like to highlight the fast burst shooting of 7f / s, not bad frame bufferbuilt Shake Reduction Image Stabilizer, many fine-tuning and overall good image quality.

I AM A NEW BREAKER AND I DON'T KNOW THE DESIGNATION ON THE LENS ... HELP TO DECODE THE LENS Pentax smc HD DA 70mm / 2.4 Limited HD ... THANKS.

    • Dark

Glory. You probably already figured it out. Just in case, I’ll say. 70 millimeters. On the crop it is more than 100. Aperture 2.4, not great, let's say. But good one.

      • Pavka

Temka, you yourself do not know much about pentax glass. Why then are you telling a person? Why didn’t you tell him about the Limited series that they were premium compact, metal, safety glasses?

      • Alexander

DA is already the designation of KROP. Exactly 70 mm. But this is so, it was not purely passable in the 22nd year. The lens is excellent.

        • B, R, P.

Focal distance is a constant value and does not depend on the size of the matrix. But this is so, it was not purely passable in the 23rd year.

    • Pavka

https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/ here the whole Pentax database with reviews

    • Someone

Pentax smc HD DA 70mm / 2.4 Limited - there is an error here, you cannot have SMC and HD at the same time - these are two types of coating, SMC is the older classic multi-coating, HD is the latest coating from Pentax.
Pentax has two versions of this lens, with both types of coatings; it is easy to distinguish by the color of the stripes on the side surface closer to the mount. For the SMC version it is green, for the HD it is red (but on other lenses this rule may be violated - on the HD 16-50/2.8 there is a green stripe).
The lens is considered a portrait lens. For militant uncompromising aesthetes there is 77/1.8 Limited. But 2-3 times more expensive.
      Other designations:
DA – lens for 1.5 crop. At full frame it can either give dark corners or vignett, or it can completely cover the full frame. Also, all DA lenses do not have an aperture ring - control is only from the camera, but purely mechanical, i.e. works even on old film cameras (except for completely new lenses with electronic aperture control for the KAF4 mount - only available on the newest cameras).
Limited is a series of high-quality fixed lenses (with the exception of one zoom 20-40/2.8-4), extremely compact, optically excellent (although not always too bright), and well-made mechanically. Expensive or very expensive.
      Other designations on Pentax optics:
ED – like everyone else, low dispersion glass
      * – top series of lenses, but slightly below the Limited level.
SDM, DC, PLM – motor in the lens (from oldest to newest). In this case, the “screwdriver” (mechanical focusing drive from the carcass) may or may not exist.
IF - like everyone else - internal focusing (external dimensions do not change when focusing)
WR, AW - weather protection, it differs on different lenses.
DA-L - plastic mount (but this marking on the lens does not always look like this)
D-FA – lens for full frame, for digital focal point.
AL – like everyone else, aspherical.

This is an exaggeration. The tool is equally important. For some reason, Paganini played the Guarneri violin, and not those made in a furniture factory.
Paganini before becoming a Paganini, played just on the violins from a stool factory, and dad flogged him with a belt to exercise more)))

Arkady good afternoon! Thanks for the review! I choose a camera between K-5 and A580. I need high ones, up to iso 3200 I have to shoot dog shows sometimes, the halls are different but often dark! Tell me, what would you prefer? Of course, the budget is limited, but I think these models are quite working!
I use the nikon d200 camera for which you need a separate Arkady Thank you for your help in choosing!
Of course I’m used to the correct colors from d200, basically I have to edit only the exposition if I don’t want a (fabulous) picture)))

    • corsair

K-5 is more functional than A-580. JV for K-5 is the same as for Nikon D200 and in terms of functionality it is not inferior to D200, for A-580 JVI is terrible, small and dark. The matrix is the same for them, but the A-580 in jeep delivers such a gorgeous picture as in K-5 you will not get after processing. There’s someone like that.

    • corsair

I took a K-5 with 18-135VR in December last year very successfully, inexpensively and with a small shot. I have not let go of my hands for six months. My first photo in which I use autoiso up to 3200 and shoot a night city not with high-aperture optics, but with eum 18-135, if necessary. At high noise there is, of course, but it looks more like a film and looks quite even. The K-5 has a very good dynamic range, the photos are voluminous as if they were not taken on a crop. I don’t know about the video, I don’t use it, but for a photo it’s an excellent phot - which is just not. Unlike my D-200, it is very compact, lightweight, the battery lasts much longer. It's a pity to look for optics for pentax with us, while for nikon I have several excellent fixes, so in good lighting my D-200 is still relevant.

  • Koba

Inaccuracy in the review - all pentaxes have full Aoto ISO in all modes. I have one pentah and I can say that for sure. In general, on pentaxes, autoexposure is possible in literally all modes, and if you use TAV, you can rotate anything and how you want, the device will still determine the exposure correctly. In manual mode, just set AutoISO and please shoot ...

    • Michael

Not at all. In M and Sv mode, AutoISO is not available. So everything is indicated correctly. Most likely, the TAv mode was not mentioned in the review, which is the usual manual mode with auto-sensitivity.

      • koba

I'll answer a little later - I have a Pentax k-01, and I constantly shoot in M mode with AutoISO. In K5 it should be the same, if it is not spoiled.

  • Alexey

Dear Arkady, thanks for the detailed review of the Pentax K5 camera, I was very interested in the camera. It stops my purchase from my not yet sold Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. You do not know if there are adapters for installing 2/4 (not MFT) system lenses on the Pentax KA / KAF / KAF3 mount, if I can sell the camera, I want to keep Olympus 40-150 f / 3.5-4.5? And yet, will it not be difficult for you to review the Olympus OM-D E-M5 MFT camera? Thank you in advance for your response.

    • Michael

4/3 adapters do not exist, as these lenses are not applicable on APS-C

      • Alexey

for self-development, why not applicable on APS-C?

        • DmitryK

Probably because the glasses were originally designed for 4/3 mikru, which is noticeably smaller in size than the crop 1.5 / crop 1.6.
Glasses from medium format can be used on FF, glasses under FF can be used on crop.
Pull glasses from a smaller format onto a large matrix - until I heard about this.
At least there will be a strong vignette at the corners and soap at the corners and edges of the frame.
In short, this is pulling an owl on a globe.

          • Denis

or maybe the length of the working segment does not allow

          • Alexey

            Thank you, I didn’t know.

          • Alexey

So the pig is pulled onto the globe. True, not all focal. Try Nikor kit18-55 for the crop to install on the d700. You will be surprised.

            • B. R. P.

The sprinkled whale and D700 have the same working length, and Olik and Pentax have a very big difference. A double cropped lens will not cover either 1,5 crop, and especially ff.

Many people and the author of the article write that the K5 and even the K5ii and K5iis have the same sensor as the Nikon D7000, D5100 and some other cameras. But Pentaxes give out pictures much cleaner than others, and the colors there are different, better. The fact is that I don’t know about K5 that K5ii and K5iis use a modified version of this sensor, with much better performance. Together with the best processor for processing signals, the Pentaxes give pictures an order of magnitude cleaner in terms of noise, and their colors are also an order of magnitude better than those of Nikon. I have three systems, including Pentax, and I can confirm this from my own experience. I no longer take D7000 and D7100 in my hands, because the pictures from them are noisier and less “processed” in editors. K5iis gives a particularly good picture! As for the K5, even my K-01 gives a much better picture than the D7000, especially at high ISO ...

    • al

I confirm. Pictures from Pentax are better drawn and better in color than from similar Nikon models.

  • alesandro

Breaks everything!) Tell gentlemen and ladies who has Pentax K5 or K3 in use and how reliable they are. ATP for answers in advance

    • Somebody

Since 2014, I have been holding this thing in my hands, carrying it behind my back, putting it on a shelf, washing it under running water, taking pictures in the cold, in the rain, etc. etc. he was with me in many places - only Ilyich's bulb is more reliable, and it burns out. And this individual endured all the hardships and hardships that left more traces on me than were reflected on him.

  • corsair

Yeah, the 16 mega matrix was great but the pentax shots with this matrix look awful. There is a D7000, eats A580 and A37 on this matrix, everything is much better there. Pentyukh campaign from any candy turd will do. Then the pentaxists are still surprised why their such wonderful and advanced cameras are not popular.

  • Igor

Yes, if the camera is normally set to 5, it will be better to shoot than Sony a580 and Nikon D7000 -Checked ...

  • Denis

If you compare the Pentax K-5 and Nikon D300s, then what are the pros and cons of both? Which would be preferable?

    • Pokemon

The park of glasses for Nikon F mount and their availability at flea markets speak for themselves.

      • Denis

Is this the only advantage of the D300s? And if in the future to change the glass, as gloves are not supposed, then what?

        • Michael

You still need to buy them. If you want to shoot with a whale, then you can buy any camera at all. Moreover, you do not name your goals ...

          • Denis

He asked only to compare the D300s and the K-5 with each other, without an emphasis on optics. I wanted to hear the unbiased opinion of those who had been using both for a long time, but for some reason the conversation turned into a channel for comparing the range of optics. That is, it turns out that these are cameras of one level and so that significantly one is no better than the other?
Well, about the goals - shooting sights, beautiful places, landscapes, people. Use on vacation, on a business trip. I'm definitely not going to shoot weddings and the like ...

            • Michael

Then both will be about the same. These are classmates. The D300 has better autofocus and a thoughtful menu. Pentax has matrix stabilization. That's all, by and large, the differences.

              • Denis

                Thank you

            • Pokemon

Denis, understand correctly the camera separately from the lenses can consider dxomark. When choosing an ecosystem, ordinary people have to consider the presence and cost of lenses for the mount they have chosen.

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I shot with an old Pentax K200, I used to bomb weddings with a Canon 30D, I didn't compare head-on, the time periods were different. But he brought Canon 550 from work and compared, just the landscape and the interior - there is not much difference, but the reproductions of paintings and complex color compositions - here Pentax wins even though he is older. Somehow, during the trip, my camera was discharged and I was given Nikon, a more modern, newer one. So I hardly figured it out, it is not simple and the color there is not so easy to adjust. The color is awful! I read it from the reviews as well. Even in the film time, when the film was the same, out of 5 Japanese firms Nikon mowed the most in color and excessive contrast. The point here is not in the matrix, the glasses there are worthless. It's worth something else. Pentax also has a color, but Minolt and Olympus have more neutral glasses. Now automatics corrects these sins, but good optics will still help to remove the lyrical winter dawn. Here it is more likely like this: in skillful hands, any camera can be configured. But according to my observations, the matrix now solves a lot, and Sony has better matrices. So Nikon can still give good results. Photos of Nikon d70 and d80 are almost indistinguishable from similar Pentax cameras, and Sony with the same matrix reproduces color better, and I think that optics play an important role here.

  • Alexander

    Good afternoon!
I want to first buy Peraks K-5.
Tell me, if it is bought in America,
Then, among other languages, will he have a menu in Russian?

    • koba

And can I answer - I strongly recommend not to take the K5, but to look for the K-5iis, the difference between them is significant, both in terms of the picture, and in terms of work at high ISO, as well as when processing files, autofocus works in the new version in almost darkness , some other bugs are fixed, and there is no filter on the matrix, with good glasses it is noticeable.

      • koba

menus in Russian are in all Pentax cameras.

  • Vladislav

Comrades! Help with advice! I have two cameras: 200 Nikon and 90, for almost a year I have been thinking of changing one of the cameras to something else, I looked closely at 7000 and 7100 and 300, but now I really wanted this pentax for some reason, k5, I don’t know why he’s I gave up in the presence of a flash and three glasses for nikon (fifty dollars 1.8, 17-70 sigma and 18-200vr). I found a lucrative offer for 10k wooden carcass, in excellent condition with one owner and 37k mileage, and is almost ready to take it. stops the fact that glasses are needed (at least an analogue of my sigma and fix), puff (although selling one nikon costs can be partially compensated for), what may “not go in”, that it will also make noise at high ISO or even worse (I'm a little paranoid , Yes). It's also scary to completely abandon Nikon, and I like him too. I shoot mainly the subject, a little portraits, nature (birds in flight). there is an option to take 7000 nikon, or three hundred (within 15-17k), 7100 has become unjustifiably expensive). What do you advise?

    • Victor

I would advise you to decide on your desires and think about why you need a Pentax in the presence of Nikon and glasses for it.

Not satisfied with the work at high ISO - take d7100 instead of d90 (leave two hundred) - and shoot further. Detailing and work at high ISOs will be great.

    • Dmitry Kostin

A big plus of the Pentax is dust and moisture protection and a matrix stub.
Here is the discussion thread of the stub:
      https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5-k-5-ii/142187-k-5-anti-shake-image-stabilization-test.html

    • Michael

Pentax has problems with glass. On the secondary market, they also sell a little and the prices are higher than the analogue Nikon-Canon. You can take a puff from Nikon. You can forget about birds in flight - AF is slow - only a trap can be removed. There is no particular point in taking it, but if you want to ...))) It's always better to try than to lick your lips for years

      • Victor

Yes, there is nothing especially to lick your lips. Moreover, to invest in one more system…. What for? The system has no special advantages over Nikon, the optics are rare, the matrix stub is a weak thing.

        • Anatoly

Oh how rare? On Pentax you can put any glass with or without an adapter, but on Nikon you need a fic because the working distance of focus is not the same. Pentax works with virtually all old glasses, unlike Nikon.

          • Victor

In general, we were talking about autofocus optics, but if we are already discussing manuals, wouldn’t it be better to choose the same mirrorless systems for this purpose? Pentax has a fairly long working distance (albeit slightly shorter than Nikon), and not just any glass will fit there.

            • Anatoly

Don't understand about the working distance? Actually, Pentax can use any kind of glass, and Pentax has old autofocus glasses by the way.

              • Victor

Well, put something from Minolta on the Pentax, maintaining infinity. Or from Canon FD. Or from rangefinder cameras.
I’m not even talking about modern Chinese (and not only) mirrorless optics.

Nikon also has old autofocus screwdriver glasses, so what?)

        • Anatoly

Are the optics on Pentax rare? Don’t rush, any old glass with a K mount fits and through an adapter and M42 without any chips like the Boot, I’m generally silent about Nikon since it generally has a different focal length and you can’t put it out of old optics.

Take ANY camera with a 36x24 matrix (Canon 5d, for example, or Nikon D700), attach a cheap fifty dollar to it and you will understand that the correct perspective in photographs is more important than noise, colors and other heresy. And you will immediately stop rushing between systems and opinions of different "gurus". And you will not give a damn, Nikon, Canon, Pentax or some other "brand". And you can finally start taking pictures and have fun. And you will understand that it happens that photography "conveys" a sense of space. And stop shooting buttercups flowers. And the landscape, the portrait, and the architecture will delight you. Amen.

        What is “correct perspective”?

        • Victor

Well, this is the kind of prospect that appears only with a cheap fifty dollar, wound on a 36x24 matrix.

The correct perspective is when there is no optical distortion, the picture on the camera conveys almost everything as the human eye sees. Some moderate wide-angles (discrete 35-40mm) can give out almost correct perspective, they are called successful. 50-60mm lenses also do not distort many. But by no means "any cheap". Zooms mow almost everything, at a wide position, and this is the price for their versatility.

Even more so for looking at the camera Pentax K-5. For a complete look around, I don’t have pictures of “death with a scythe”, “Antichrist with 1/3 demons”. If you don’t take cameras of other brands for cameras, then don’t hesitate to look around. But if you are robish, then kill everyone like your fathers or children. Can't you ever take full pictures on the Pentax K-5, how can you rob when looking at the Nikon brand?

A good camera with good functionality and flexible settings, even by modern standards. It differs from modern cameras in the absence of several features such as pixel shift, contour illumination, etc. Objective disadvantages include autofocus, which was already corrected in the K-5-2. But if you use “dark” glass (with an aperture of no more than 2,4), then autofocus works well. And this is an “indestructible”, reliable and protected device with a stabilizer in the carcass.

Good review, I use this camera, but I can’t afford a more expensive one
