Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

According provided by lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical many thanks to Vladimir Tarasyuk. What do all these 'letters' in the long name of the lens mean, you can see here.

Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical - standard universal lens for full-frame cameras Nikon fx. Released in the summer of 2012 and often comes with a camera Nikon D600 and maybe will go with D610. My guess is that the Nikon 24-85mm VR was specifically designed for the amateur full-frame cameras that became Nikon D600 и Nikon D610... Most likely in the future it will be installed on all Nikon amateur full-frame cameras. Despite the fact that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is actually a 'kit' lens for FX cameras, it performs well in real conditions. Probably Nikon did its best to ensure that the first full-length 'inexpensive' kit was warmly received by amateur photographers.

Optical lens design

Nikon 24-85mm VR is a lens with all the modern features you need. Here you can find both Image Stabilizer and Internal Focus and slightly improved aperture F / 3.5-4.5 (not F / 3.5-5.6), compact body and 3,5x zoom. There is a very similar lens, but without an Image Stabilizer - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED SWM IF Aspherical. The latter was produced from 2002-2006 in Japan and Thailand, and between 2006 and 2012 there was a 'chasm', as few people were interested in budget lenses for expensive (at that time) full-frame cameras.

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

The lens body is made of plastic, but well assembled - no backlash or obvious flaws. The Nikon 24-85mm VR weighs a little less than 500 grams, and will not weigh too heavily on a rather massive full-frame camera. The mount is metal, the zoom ring is rubberized, but the focusing ring is made of plastic.

The focusing of the lens is quite quiet and the focusing speed is above average. I cannot write that Nikon 24-85mm VR focuses quickly, as its focusing speed is inferior even to some old similar lenses - Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF и Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5. It’s a pity that even a 20 year old Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 Ultrasonic focuses faster. Nikon 24-85mm VR has internal focusing with useful mode 'M / A'. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens works like a vacuum pump :). In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 145 degrees.

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

I shot a small American-style wedding using the Nikon 24-85mm VR (unfortunately, I can’t show it), but I can say with certainty that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is the best among inexpensive similar regular zooms. The weak side, of course, is not the best focusing speed, 'humped' distortion and vignetting with a drop in sharpness at the edges of the image when used on full-frame cameras. For me, vignette and weak edge sharpness are not always important. But on Nikon DX cameras, the lens is sharp across the entire field and at all focal lengths, while EGF is 36-127,5mm. I really liked that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is not afraid of backlight at all and creates images with pleasant contrast and color reproduction. If we change Nikon 24-85mm VR, then only for faster and faster Nikon 24-70 / 2.8, Nikon 28-70 / 2.8 or the universal Nikon 24-120 / 4 and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon FX cameras. Of course, the lens has obvious flaws, but in general it is completely a 'working machine'.

    tortured to choose (((
    help please decide
    there is a camera 5300, standard 18-55 VRII (with a button) and 50 G / 1.8
needed for children's parties, apartments, animals, nature (I really want it to be sharp and autofocus fast)
which is better to take (choose from used)
    1.Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5
    2.Nikon 28 2.8
    3.Sigma 24-70 2.8

    • Valery A.

The 1st and 3rd, probably, will be too narrow for children's parties and apartments, maybe sigma (tamron) 17-50 / 2,8?

      • anonym

Sigma is not sharp (from 4,5 sharp) and not fast, right now I’m selling it

        • Svetlana

          Thank you.
Continuing the selection, now, of these:
          1.Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5
          2.Nikon 28 1.8
Sharpness and speed AF - very important, children and animals do not sit still.
More inclined to Nikon 28 1.8.
          What say

          • anonym

the first question was 28 2.8 now 1.8. Number 2 is more expensive than the first, minus versatility, but it is fixed, so on the same f4 it will be like a razor.

            • Svetlana

In the first post I was mistaken, I considered, namely, Nikon 28 1.8.
Versatility, of course, is good, but I want sharpness and speed of focus.
If you put aside versatility, will the Nikon 28 1.8 be the sharpest and fastest?

        • Alex teufmann

Sigma is the sharpest lens for Nikon. I personally tested Sigma 24-70 2.8, Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5. Both Nikon 24-120 f4 and Sigma 24-105 f4. On Nikon Df and D610. So - Sigma is the record holder for sharpness. Some people don't like Sigma's colors, but this is also a moot point. I will say this, Sigma gives a different picture than Nikon, not familiar. But! If we compare the object that was photographed and the photographs taken by Nikon and Sigma, in 70% of cases Sigma's color rendition is closer to the original. Unfortunately I don't save my test results, but I don't impose my point of view on anyone, believe it or not.
Tamron 28-70 f2.8 is also not bad by the way.

          • Valentine

You simply compare lenses of different classes. There are reviews of all these lenses here. So it is written that Sigma F2.8 is indeed quite sharp with F4. What is there to argue. Look at a similar Nikon with F2.8 and compare with these values, then it will be clear why the Sigma sharpness is not so much praised.

    • Edward

      1) nikon 35mm dx - sharp fix
      2) nikon 18-200mm is a good universal zoom
      3) tamron 17-50 2.8 vc - suitable for dx
      4) YONGNUO 35mm 1: 2 is also a suitable fix, suitable for both dx and fx

24-85 vr is no better than 18-55 VRII - it will be even worse than there will be no wide angle
25 (28) -70 (85) are full-frame lenses, what's the point of spending money and carrying the weight of glasses that illuminate 2.25 times more area than the dx matrix? - besides - having lost a wide angle

the only thing is 24 (28) -85 - they will be better 18-55 VRII - this is a little less vignetting - on open, but the camera itself is able to cope with it
18-55 VRII - Considered the best cheap crop pickup among all of its classmates, it's sharp and it's okay with autofocus

for better autofocus - you need to switch from D5300 to D300 (s) or (D7100, D7200)
switching to the D300 (s) will not require any investment at all (more likely enough for accessories), but you will get a usable autofocus system, a sturdy body and the ability to use a much larger fleet of optics, better flash work, metering with manual lenses, larger frame buffer, high shooting speed, more fine tuning of all parameters, 2 flash drives, a lighter eye, etc.

      • Eugene o

You clearly did not shoot with a subject lens on the crop. The absence of a wide angle in the range of 18-24 mm (27-36 EGF) is not critical for everyone, because 36mm EGF is a standard wide angle. In addition, the lens is physically lighter (the picture is actually brighter in the pentermirror of the younger crop) and the presence of a 85 mm TV range (EGF 132) with a working aperture of 4.5 is a significant plus.

  • Svetlana

    Or this Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G
    Tortured to choose (((

    • Peter Sh.

Svetlana, better take Nikon 35mm f / 1.8 DX and an umbrella with flash.

  • Svetlana

The agony of choice is over, I bought Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G. But, the problem is that sharp pictures are obtained only in Livt Wiew mode. With the usual focus method, the pictures are mostly slightly soapy.
What is the reason, tell me?

    • Valery A.

Check the front-back focus - remove at least a sheet of text at an angle (approx. 45 degrees), focusing on the middle, with open apertures.

      • Svetlana

        Thank you.
How to check if the stabilizer is working? When the “start” button is half pressed, on other lenses, the image “freezes”, but not on this one.

  • Andrei

Great site, I'll try this lens before moving on

  • Trueash

Arkady, hello! I'll start with praises: I have been reading your site for a long time, very informative, useful and interesting. I hope you do not abandon this business. And now, I beg your pardon, a stopitzky question about choosing a lens.
There is a d7100 carcass, I want to close the average FR. Now the list of candidates has been reduced: either this is 24-85, or 28-105. 24-85 attracts with optical quality (The Angry Photographer also praises him very much); 28-105 is interesting in macro mode (albeit not 1: 1, but it will do for flower butterflies in nature). In your experience, how much does the 28-105 lose in optical quality, taking into account that both will work on crop? Genres - whatever comes across (I'm a humble amateur): street, macro, cityscape, candid, portrait, etc. The lack of a wide angle is not critical, for landscapes / architecture there is a good Tokina 12-28 f / 4.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In terms of quality, it loses significantly. Technically 24-85 / 24-85 vr is better than 28-105. And 28-105 is more beautiful, longer, 1: 2 macro with autofocus.

      • Trueash

Thanks for the answer. It's a pity that the toad won't allow you to type everything you want ... Tokina 28-70 is very attractive, but I don't see how to use it yet. So, I'll take the proven safe 24-85 (I'll have to go broke for the macro rings, but that is ...)

        • Arkady Shapoval

Personally, I would take a proven Tamron 28-75, there is a macro of 1: 3.9, which usually allows you to shoot a lot, but on an aperture of F / 3.5-4.5, this lens will bypass 28-105 and 24-85, while it costs a penny (about $ 200 a second version).

          • Trueash

Tamrons are somewhat confused by quality, but perhaps this is a good option. It will be necessary to choose very carefully

            • Arkady Shapoval

The model 28-75, unlike the similar 17-50, although it is hippy shot down, it works for wear for a very long time, is very easy to repair, and is not capricious to use. I constantly recommend it, I personally had this lens for a long time, in fact, like 28-105. Definitely left myself 28-75.

              • Alexey

Arkady, good evening! Can I ask a question about Tamron 28-75? I choose between him and Nikkor 24-120 / 4. You used both, often recommend a tamron, but is there a noticeable difference in the optical quality of these lenses (for a full frame)?

              • Arkady Shapoval

24-120 / 4 is preferable, more convenient and with a stub

              • Igor

I do not know. It was. Focal and price yes! The quality of the photo is horror!

  • Alexey

    Thank you!

  • Victor

Hello! Thanks for your articles. But I can't decide in any way whether it makes sense to change the nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5 to such a 24-85 or to 24-120 from the same nikon. The new ones are attracted by the presence of a stub. On the other hand, the applicability of the stub will be limited to relatively static plots. And there is no additional gain in aperture ratio. Plus 28-105 is a thundering-buzzing something with a dangling and slightly rattling trunk (at least that's mine). However, I tested it with 50mm 1.8d and 85mm 1.8g, and, frankly, in terms of picture quality, this zoom outperforms fifty dollars more than loses to 85. Tell me if there will be any gain in picture quality when switching to newer ones, but still lenses from the same class? Lenses of the 24-70 2.8 class scare me with their size and, so far, also with the price) Therefore, I don't really consider them. And if buying a new zoom does not make sense, I will rather be looking towards the full-frame Nikkor 35mm 1.8g.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Which camera are you using?
New lenses are sharper and more contrast, quiet, with a stub. Successful version 28-105 can serve faithfully for a very long time. Of the options I often recommend Tamron 28-75 / 2.8, it is cheap, light, 4-24 / 85-3,5 and 4,5-24 / 120 on the same apertures do not drop a drop on f4. Plus, Tamron 28-75 has a normal / nice pattern.

  • anonym

Friends let me wedge into the discussion. 48 years of experience as a photographer, I can say one thing that there are no two absolutely identical lenses. Therefore, someone has problems with the lens or with the camera, it's all individually. But mostly from skills and desire, when I started doing photography I was told by one pro photographer such a phrase (if you know how you can take pictures with an iron), I leave my comment on this subject. I have 3 of them and each works in its own way on Nikon 7000 without comment all 3. And on Nikon 600 full-format, all 3 work with the same setting in different ways. My advice is to pay attention to setting up the camera, the lens itself is solid and well-made, it has only advantages and approvals on my part.

  • anonym

Yes, Yuri Muller forgot to introduce myself as I said that from this objective there are only positive emotions, especially when the shot was successful, I mean with the performance. I wish you all successful shots.

  • lawyer

which is better to take - THIS lens or 18-105 ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the Nikon DX camera, 18-105 will be more convenient, for the Nikon FX camera - 24-85

  • Alexandra

Hello Arkady! Thank you for such wonderful reviews. I re-read almost everything, but I can’t decide everything. I am looking for a lens with a wide angle. I’m shooting Nikon d610 on the camera, now Tamron has 70-300mm lenses and 20-35mm tokens in its arsenal, so the latter is very upsetting, soapy and extremely afraid of backlight. I think to take another lens with a wide angle and fit in the amount of up to 30 tr. I choose between AF NIKKOR 24mm f / 2.8D or AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm. Which advice would you give? Thanks.

    • Alexandra

Or maybe a tamron of 17-50 mm in general?

      • Dmitriy

Tamron 17-50 2.8 crop. You have an FF camera. From Tokina, you can use 16-28 2,8 (very good glass is super shirik). Nikon 24-85 VR is an all-rounder. An alternative to it, Tamron 28-75 - 2.8 2nd version at the same price. It should be noted that every millimeter at a wide angle is important. You can also look towards the Nikon 24-120 f / 4 VR. All IMHO.

    • Michael

it is difficult to meet such a sum - shiriki is an expensive pleasure. Try to watch the native 20-35 2.8 - it's just in this price range

  • Oleksandr

And if for Nikon D750, what would be preferable as a staffer in terms of sharpness: Nikon 24-85 f3,5-4,5g ed vr or Tamron 28-75 f2,8 2nd version? I ask since the reviews in both discussion threads on these lenses are ambiguous, one contradicts the other. Thank you in advance.

    • Alex

Tamron 28-75 is better. It focuses more accurately. Sharper, the price is slightly more expensive by 1000-2000 rubles. If you need it for reportage photos, it's better to take 24-120 f4 from Nikon or 24-70 VS from Tamron. They are about the same price

      • Specialist

It is unlikely that the Tamron 28-75 focuses more precisely, on mine, that is, back focus, it is not. What a sharp agree, compared with Nikkor 40 / 2,8 macro - the same. Well, the drawing is more interesting than on dark zooms.

  • anonym

Arkady, hello! I like your site. Informative and interesting. I want to ask you for advice should change 28-105 for this lens and if you change what you want with a stub.

    • anonym

      Damn the same trouble!

  • Irina

The lens is excellent, light, clear. I have been using it for several years, really universal.

  • Oleg

Good day, such a question. I’m shooting now on a nikon d600 camera, I used nikkor AF 28-85 3.5-4.5 as a universal lens. After a recent trip, I noticed quite strong HA in the landscapes, I think to change the lens. What can you advise for landscapes mainly? Regards, Oleg.

    • Michael

Maybe you should try Photoshop. Everyone has HA, especially at a wide angle. The subject must be better than yours

  • Stanislas

Hello everyone, gentlemen, what do you recommend on the Nikon D700 for portraits? Many recommend Jupiter 37A

    • B. R. P.

      105 DC, 85 1.4D.

    • anonym

Yes, Nikon 105 or 135 DC and 85 \ 1,4 D are good lenses, but the price is 40-60 tr, Nikon 80-200 \ 2,8 is slightly cheaper. You can Nikon 85 \ 1,8G, it is cheaper by more than half. You can search from the ancient, for example Nikon 105 \ 1,8 A-is, but it's hard to find a decent one. The cheapest Jupiter 37A or Tair 11A.

      • George

        kaleinar 100mm look

        • Eugene o

Kalainar is a good lens, but in the USSR and in 1988. In 2019, there are much better lenses, with better contrast and autofocus, and for a little more money.

  • anonym

Tell me please, will the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D be much worse than this?

  • Sergei

Good afternoon, now I am faced with the choice to buy this or 24-120 f4 there is a task to close the report. There are also 50 and 105. Is it worth it to overpay for 24-120 f4?

    • B. R. P.

If you need 120mm then it’s probably worth it.

  • Eugene o

I have long wanted to unsubscribe on this lens, but my hands reached only now.
I have already had this for three years, I shot them on the D7000 crop, after which I bought another full frame of the D600. On the crop, in general, there are some good impressions of it: excellent contrast, light, sharp even on open, pleasant bokeh.
On the full frame, the only drawback is distortion, but its camera itself eliminates for jeepgs, any developing RAV can correct it in post-processing.
    Compared to other lenses:
    - Tamron 17-50 2.8: eerie color of tamron, I look at the photo from it with pain
    - Nikkor 18-70: in 2019, it is unrealistic to find such a Nikkor in a normal state. In general, the picture is comparable, maybe 18-70 is not so sharp
    - Nikkor 18-105: no sharpness, super zoom is super zoom
    - Nikkor 18-55 VR: comparable, but 55 mm was not enough for me, and at 18 I almost did not shoot.

As a result - I sold / gave away all of the above and left 24-85.

  • Dmitriy

with a drop in sharpness at the edges of the image when used on full-frame cameras))) yeah ... and this is a full-frame lens ....

  • Paul

Good afternoon, just tell me, is the version without VR worse? Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED SWM IF Aspherical
    I can't find information about him ...

    • koba

I'll tell you, since I have it and have been using it for the last year. It surpasses the version with VR in autofocus speed, it has less distortions, especially those terrible at 24mm, which, except in PT Lens Pro, cannot be corrected by other methods, and it has one subtle advantage - it is marking the distance scale up to 4 meters. and this helps a lot to set the hyperfocal at 24mm at F5.6b, which I use very often, and it costs half the price. But pay attention to the fact that the seller sells it with a blend, since its blend is simply extremely difficult to get and will cost up to $ 30 at auctions, and Chinese simply do not exist in nature, it does not fit new to it! Maybe I'll do a review for this site somehow. In terms of sharpness, it is quite a bit inferior to the excellent Tokina 100 Macro, but in terms of bokeh and pleasantness of the picture it is definitely inferior, the picture from it turns out to be so reportage, technical, but it cannot be called bad.

  • Jury

In connection with the recent acquisition of the d610, I look at this lens for the role of a regular one. I think that he would completely satisfy my needs at the stage of development of FF, especially in conjunction with the existing 50 mm / 1.4 and 70-300 / 4.5-5.6.
    But…
As I can see, now it costs one-on-one with Tamron 24-70 / 2.8 Di VC USD (not G2), and somehow you understand that he loses to Tamron ...

  • Vyacheslav

Nikon 7000, purchased a universal travel lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5, the first shooting was carried out in Crimea on Cape Fiolent in cloudy weather, in M mode, as I used to shoot with other glasses. As a result, I screwed up almost all the pictures - noise, lack of sharpness, and it does not last, in short, a fiasco. The next trip was on a boat trip from Yalta to Sudak, there was no time to experiment with the modes and I decided to shoot in the Automatic mode, no matter how shameful it sounds. And I am very glad - I got several hundred beautiful, rich, clear photos! Yes, someone may find flaws in them, but they suit me completely.
Now the question is, should I always shoot with this glass in Auto mode, or does someone have experience how to use it in other modes ?!

    • Oleksandr

Took a used Nikon 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 G AF-S ED Without VR. All focal lengths up to F9 are nice around the edges, especially strong on the left and at 35mm. New condition without damage.

      • Victor

        Bad luck, sympathetic.

        The external state says little.

That's all you have, not thank God) 80-200, now this one ...

    Gentlemen, I need advice. I'm running out of money Nikon Z5 + FTZ adapter + NIKKOR 50mm f / 1.8G.
You need a universal lens up to 15k rubles. Unfortunately Tamrons (28-75 and 24-70) are not compatible with Z5, I am considering Nikkor 24-85 and Sigma EX DG HSM 24-70.
I shoot in a photo studio, in the future I plan small reports.
What do you think is the best choice?

I know that there are negative reviews on Sigma regarding back and front focus, but on the Z5 the focus is matrix and in theory it should work fine, what do you think?

I have had this lens for many years. The photo is shameful, but the video is good.
