Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical - standard universal lens for full-frame cameras Nikon fx. Released in the summer of 2012 and often comes with a camera Nikon D600 and maybe will go with D610. My guess is that the Nikon 24-85mm VR was specifically designed for the amateur full-frame cameras that became Nikon D600 и Nikon D610... Most likely in the future it will be installed on all Nikon amateur full-frame cameras. Despite the fact that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is actually a 'kit' lens for FX cameras, it performs well in real conditions. Probably Nikon did its best to ensure that the first full-length 'inexpensive' kit was warmly received by amateur photographers.

Optical lens design

Optical lens design

Nikon 24-85mm VR is a lens with all the modern features you need. Here you can find both Image Stabilizer and Internal Focus and slightly improved aperture F / 3.5-4.5 (not F / 3.5-5.6), compact body and 3,5x zoom. There is a very similar lens, but without an Image Stabilizer - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED SWM IF Aspherical. The latter was produced from 2002-2006 in Japan and Thailand, and between 2006 and 2012 there was a 'chasm', as few people were interested in budget lenses for expensive (at that time) full-frame cameras.

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

The lens body is made of plastic, but well assembled - no backlash or obvious flaws. The Nikon 24-85mm VR weighs a little less than 500 grams, and will not weigh too heavily on a rather massive full-frame camera. The mount is metal, the zoom ring is rubberized, but the focusing ring is made of plastic.

The focusing of the lens is quite quiet and the focusing speed is above average. I cannot write that Nikon 24-85mm VR focuses quickly, as its focusing speed is inferior even to some old similar lenses - Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF и Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5. It’s a pity that even a 20 year old Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 Ultrasonic focuses faster. Nikon 24-85mm VR has internal focusing with useful mode 'M / A'. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens works like a vacuum pump :). In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 145 degrees.

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

I shot a small American-style wedding using the Nikon 24-85mm VR (unfortunately, I can’t show it), but I can say with certainty that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is the best among inexpensive similar regular zooms. The weak side, of course, is not the best focusing speed, 'humped' distortion and vignetting with a drop in sharpness at the edges of the image when used on full-frame cameras. For me, vignette and weak edge sharpness are not always important. But on Nikon DX cameras, the lens is sharp across the entire field and at all focal lengths, while EGF is 36-127,5mm. I really liked that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is not afraid of backlight at all and creates images with pleasant contrast and color reproduction. If we change Nikon 24-85mm VR, then only for faster and faster Nikon 24-70 / 2.8, Nikon 28-70 / 2.8 or the universal Nikon 24-120 / 4 and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon FX cameras. Of course, the lens has obvious flaws, but in general it is completely a 'working machine'.

  • valera

Well, who of the competent would prompt me working sharp glass on Nikon 3100.

    • Peter Sh.

      Whale 18-55 VR.

      • VALERA

18-55 WE ON THE SECONDARY MARKET FOR 10 THOUSAND TENGES ARE DELIVERED FROM THEM. IN RUSSIA THIS IS ABOUT 2 THOUSAND RUBLES. IN THE REVIEWS, PRAISE, AND IN PRACTICE, DELIVERED. PARADOX. THANKS FOR PARTICIPATING.

        • Lynx

losers same. . everyone immediately buys for themselves "cool fifty" ..
and 2 thousand for it is expensive ... 1-1,5 still all right.

          • Oleg

Good afternoon . Help me decide on the standard lenses for d7000 (zoom): 16-85 or 24-85 f3.5-4.5. The first has angles, the second has sharpness ... The priority of shooting a mountain, a park and so on is whatever you like. I have fifty dollars and a zenith of 16 f2.8. Thank you very much . PS "The brain is boiling."

            • Lynx

You know, I recently happened to shoot on a bunch of d7000 + 16-85 and I did not notice any problems with sharpness.
Despite the fact that landscapes are shot on covered apertures, there will be more sharpness.
A wide angle on the crop for the landscape, it seems to me more relevant, than a slight drop in sharpness on the open.
And for portraits it is still better to use a fast fix

              • Oleg

                Thank you.

  • Nicholas

Not “dress”, but don. At the beginning.

  • Ivan Wolverine

with a focal length of 70 to 85 mm, you have to shoot at an aperture of no more than 5,6, and even better at an aperture that is more clamped than 5,6…. otherwise on the long end there will be a solid soap ... ((... here's the best zoom for you .... at the short end 24-28 mm at aperture of 4,0, sharpness is good ...

  • Maksim

I think to put this lens on a dx camera instead of nikkor 18-105. The question arose: how much better (or worse) image quality?

    • anonym

Better, compared on D7000, 24-85VR is much more advantageous in terms of quality, but less advantageous in terms of covering a wide angle.

      • Maksim

About the wide angle is understandable, it is the picture quality, focus speed, etc. that interests.

        • anonym

Focus speed is slightly faster. The picture quality is also noticeably better (especially on the crop), since the crop matrix picks out only the central part of the image, and there 24-85VR is very good. If it suits me on the full frame, with a slight loss of detail at the edges of the frame, then on the crop it is generally amazing.

  • Eugene

What is better to take on d5200: 24-85 or sigma 17-50 2.8 in terms of quality of the picture that will be better (about the angle and aperture it is clear, especially since there is an external puff)

    • Lynx

they are generally similar in the picture.
But with all the others, I would take a sigma as a "back seat after the whale".

      • Eugene

Yes, I did not have this "whale") I immediately knew that I would shoot birds, animals, so I took photos from 55-300. But for a year I got tired of shooting them.

        • Pastor

Take sigma 17-50 wasps. Glass came out very worthy, at the level of top native lenses for crop. And 24-85 and darker, and without a wide angle.

  • seva8698

And with better luck, buy Sigma 18 50 HSM MACRO without any OS
glass pleasant in the picture and sharpness and then they made 17 50 OS from it ...

  • Valery

Please tell me how this lens on the D90 will be compared to the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR. It's clear about the corner, the picture itself is very interested.
    Thanks in advance.

  • anonym

    tell me, is there a choice what to choose Nikon 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED VR AF-S or Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX? Nikon D3100 camera. there are whale 18-55 and 35mm 1.8

  • anonym

the first one does not fit the camera?

    • anonym

      why not fit? aka AF-S

  • Ruslan

mostly I shoot portraits to the full height or waist-high, but sometimes they ask me to shoot a wedding, sometimes we go on vacation. so there is a choice between Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX and was advised to look at 18-140.? Nikon D3100 camera. there is a whale 18-55 and 35mm 1.8 Help determine

    • anonym

Ruslan, of course, better take Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX and sell your 18-55, I would also replace 35ku with 50mm f1.8G

  • Sergei

Help with a choice of 18-140 and 24-70 on the D5100

    • Igor_K

If for versatility and everyday use, then 18-140 (18-200 is even better). Well, if you have enough funds for 24-70 \ 2,8, then you will get a noticeable lack of a long angle, an unpleasant “advantage” in the balance, a sharp “rise in the cost of construction”, you will constantly “take care of the lens”, and, as a result, miss a lot of wonderful moments for shooting! But if, after all of the above, you still dare to buy 24-70 \ 2,8, then in combination with the D5100 matrix, the picture will simply “fall off your feet”, and you will soon, be sure to buy in addition to the best Nikon's standard zoom - full-matrix D800E (D750, D ...), and you will “take care” of them, but for D5100 you still buy 18-200, and you will constantly carry it with you in the car (carry it in your bag), and you will make them a lot of wonderful photos and make a great video, and you will love this “bundle” very much, and you will have double happiness! (And you need it7 Or you are so rich7 Joke)

    • brighty

The 24-70 is a cool, professional, ponto-cut glass for full frame that completely loses its crop versatility. A kind of staff-portrait, and not body and not wide.
And 18-140 is very sharp and versatile glass, but dark, or rather not aperture. It all depends on the tasks, if I needed a portrait painter and a staff member, then at a price of 24-70 it’s better to take 35mm 1.8 + 85mm 1.8, and even a fifty dollars to catch.
And for complete versatility, instead of 18-140 and for almost the same price, 18-55 (with a button) + 55-300.
In any case, before you buy and then think “what the hell I need it”, you should take your time to sort out as many options as possible.

      • Alexey

nafig 18-55 ... the same 18-70 will be much more pleasant both in quality and picture, bayonet mount - metal, ma - mode, internal focusing, a little lighter, well, a little more versatile, macro is better, portrait is better, group photo of some some people at a wide angle, what is there, that there will be trash.

  • Aashim

    Thanks for the wonderful review!
Could you tell us something about this lens, which is almost identical to the one described here - Nikon 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G IF-ED AF-S. Found here http://magazilla.ru/desc/nikon-24-85mm-f-3-5-4-5g-if-ed-af-s-zoom-nikkor/

  • Aashim

    Is it better or worse?
And what, in the end, I have to choose, I'll lose my mind!
AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical or
    AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G IF-ED or still
AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) as the first native lens.
Help, I beg you! I read a bunch of reviews, I can not decide.
Nikon D610 camera, my second CZK. Before that I shot all the time on film (Pentax)

    • anonym

Nikon has only one lens with 24-85mm f / 3,5-4,5G - on the official website it is designated AF-S NIKKOR 24-85MM F / 3,5-4,5G ED VR. I would just take it - the characteristics are similar, but since it was released 12 years later, it is probably better in resolution and resistance to backlight. I also used to choose between these glasses for a long time, but according to the reviews it is difficult to draw a conclusion - each sandpiper praises its swamp. As a result, I bought two fixes))

  • anonym

There is an old Nikkor 35-70, 2,8d, is it worth it to change to 24-85. Hire to the crop.

    • Jury

The picture 35-70 is much more interesting - this is a lens of a different class.

  • Igor

    Good afternoon!
Maybe someone knows, tell me, the same Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G but without VR, in addition to the lack of an optical stub, is something else different from the one described?
    Thank you!

  • Alexander

    Good. Tell me whether it is worth changing a Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G AF-S ED DX VR lens. I use it now on a Nikon 24-85 mm f / 3.5-4.5 G ED-IF AF-S zoom-nikkor without a stabilizer, will there be a noticeable difference. Nikon 5100 camera

    • BB

You will lose a wide angle, and this is noticeable: 36mm versus 27mm EGF.
And what's the point of changing one dark zoom to another dark zoom?
It makes sense to change 18-105 to 17-50 / 2,8 (or 17-55 / 2,8) - in this case, you get a higher aperture ratio, but you lose the range of 50-105.
Or it makes sense to buy good fixes, and leave 18-105 as a station wagon.
It all depends on your tasks.

      • Sergei

But do you need to recalculate EGF on DX lenses? The difference will be 18 versus 36.
“It is important to keep in mind that DX lenses (designed for cameras with an APS-C sensor) indicate the real, not the equivalent focal length” source -http: //prophotos.ru/lessons/16486-krop-faktor-i- ekvivalentnoe-fokusnoe-rasstoyanie

        • Valery A.

If you are switching from FF to HF, then recount (50mm for FF is the same as 35mm for HF), and if you have only HF, then the FR on all lenses are the same: 35 / 1,8 DX = 35/1,8, 55 for FF; 200-70mm is slightly wider than 200-2,8mm / XNUMX, etc.

        • BB

This means that you have misunderstood the information (do not confuse FR and EGF) - for DX EGF is always recalculated, no matter which lens (DX or FX), read the article:
          https://radojuva.com/2011/05/size-of-matrica/

  • Alexander

Thank you. I will take note.

  • anonym

paired with d5200 will be the norm?

    • Alexander

On crop, this lens gives excellent sharpness, put it on the D600 and on the D3300, on the D3300 the picture quality is much better than on the D600 and I like the result, but on the D600 the result is average. As Arkady said on crop, most of his shortcomings go away. Of course, taking it is better in the secondary market)

  • Alexey

You can summarize: -Excellent lens for crop; - bad lens for full format.

  • Georgy

Arkady, answer a few questions, please.
There is a D5100 carcass with an 18-55 lens.
There is a desire to get rid of him and buy the discussed 24-85.
So I don’t understand a bit what angles I will get from him on my carcass.
    1) It is more convenient for me to compare, of course, with my own ... so if on my 18mm FR I see in the viewfinder, for example (for example!) 100 degrees, then what is the equivalent of the focal (in comparison with mine) I will get at 24-85? Those. A 24mm FR lens 24-85 after being mounted on a crop will match on my 18-55?
I want to compare Pts with mine, because I want to know how much angle I’ll lose from the current, namely from my 18mm.
    2) and more ... I dug up information on the internet that when the lens is installed from the FF to the crop, the aperture is also lost. Is it so?

    Thank you.

    • Michael

So compare. There is no need to recount anything. The angle of 24-85 by 24 mm will correspond to your angle from 18-55 to 24 mm. Aperture there. https://radojuva.com/2011/05/size-of-matrica/ read.

      • Georgy

Aperture there too…. in what sense is this to be understood?))

        • Michael

This is about your second question. The aperture does not need to be counted, because this is a characteristic of the lens, as well as the focal length and does not depend on the size of the camera’s matrix. It’s just that you are replacing the concepts of EGF and FR, aperture ratio and the resulting depth of field. This applies to the use of the same lens on different sized matrices.

      • Sergei

Nothing like that, to understand what angle you get on 24 FX, you need to set 36mm on your DX lens!

        • Michael

Corner, yes. But the focal point is unchanged. You confuse again

            • Michael

This is just ether, i.e., the angle of view of the objective

        • a lion

Everything is exactly the opposite. Set FF to 35! Since the FF captures twice (in area) more at the same focal length. I'm sorry.

        • Victor

They wrote nonsense. 24mm are the same in both angles.

    • Denis

There is a desire to get rid of him and buy the discussed 24-85

What do you expect from a purchase?

      • Georgy

I expect about the same from 24-85 as from 18-55 it can only slightly less soap at the edges of the frame.
It's just that my current one is with a jamb and needs to be changed.

        • Denis

understandably. I thought that if the meaning was in the prospect of switching to a full frame, then you can probably get it later with the camera as a whale

  • a lion

Well, moo is the author! For full-length cameras! You have to write reviews and not even understand the basics. So that I don't disgrace myself anymore, I will inform the author that full-frame (for example, Hasselblat) and full-frame are different things. The lens is just right for small format cameras.

    • Alexey

Well, it's just that a revelation came to us from you ... otherwise no one knew what format 24 by 36 refers to. And the term "half-frame", it is clear that it is given as a translation of full frame, so marketers designate digital cameras with a matrix of 24 by 36, which of course corresponds small format. And if you carefully read all the information on this site, you will understand that the author knows this very well.

  • Leonid

    Good afternoon!
I want to order a couple of filters for this lens. Vignetting is very undesirable. Tell someone, do they give it standard filters with a wide angle vignette? Do I need to look for SLIM filters?

    • Leonid

I will answer myself. I found it with a well-known foreign surveyor: low-profile filters are needed.

  • Kateryna

I choose between 24-85 and 24-120 for Nikon d7200 crop
the main goal is to shoot dogs on the street, sharpness at open diaphragms and more or less nimble AF are important
which of these 2 lenses will be sharper?
    Thank you!

    • Gennady

I think that Niccor 16-85 will be better, he is sharp and for crop

  • Marat

Hello Arkady. I need your advice, for Nikon D7100 I choose universal zoom, there are two options: 1-NIKON NIKKOR 24-85 F / 3.5-4.5 EG VR and 2- Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF). Who do you think is better in reliability, and who has a better picture. I am going to operate only on crop.

What is better for reporting, 24-85 or 28-105?
