Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

According provided by lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical many thanks to Vladimir Tarasyuk. What do all these 'letters' in the long name of the lens mean, you can see here.

Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical - standard universal lens for full-frame cameras Nikon fx. Released in the summer of 2012 and often comes with a camera Nikon D600 and maybe will go with D610. My guess is that the Nikon 24-85mm VR was specifically designed for the amateur full-frame cameras that became Nikon D600 и Nikon D610... Most likely in the future it will be installed on all Nikon amateur full-frame cameras. Despite the fact that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is actually a 'kit' lens for FX cameras, it performs well in real conditions. Probably Nikon did its best to ensure that the first full-length 'inexpensive' kit was warmly received by amateur photographers.

Nikon 24-85mm VR is a lens with all the modern features you need. Here you can find both Image Stabilizer and Internal Focus and slightly improved aperture F / 3.5-4.5 (not F / 3.5-5.6), compact body and 3,5x zoom. There is a very similar lens, but without an Image Stabilizer - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED SWM IF Aspherical. The latter was produced from 2002-2006 in Japan and Thailand, and between 2006 and 2012 there was a 'chasm', as few people were interested in budget lenses for expensive (at that time) full-frame cameras.

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

The lens body is made of plastic, but well assembled - no backlash or obvious flaws. The Nikon 24-85mm VR weighs a little less than 500 grams, and will not weigh too heavily on a rather massive full-frame camera. The mount is metal, the zoom ring is rubberized, but the focusing ring is made of plastic.

The focusing of the lens is quite quiet and the focusing speed is above average. I cannot write that Nikon 24-85mm VR focuses quickly, as its focusing speed is inferior even to some old similar lenses - Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF и Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5. It’s a pity that even a 20 year old Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 Ultrasonic focuses faster. Nikon 24-85mm VR has internal focusing with useful mode 'M / A'. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens works like a vacuum pump :). In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 145 degrees.

I shot a small American-style wedding using the Nikon 24-85mm VR (unfortunately, I can’t show it), but I can say with certainty that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is the best among inexpensive similar regular zooms. The weak side, of course, is not the best focusing speed, 'humped' distortion and vignetting with a drop in sharpness at the edges of the image when used on full-frame cameras. For me, vignette and weak edge sharpness are not always important. But on Nikon DX cameras, the lens is sharp across the entire field and at all focal lengths, while EGF is 36-127,5mm. I really liked that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is not afraid of backlight at all and creates images with pleasant contrast and color reproduction. If we change Nikon 24-85mm VR, then only for faster and faster Nikon 24-70 / 2.8, Nikon 28-70 / 2.8 or the universal Nikon 24-120 / 4 and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon FX cameras. Of course, the lens has obvious flaws, but in general it is completely a 'working machine'.

I took a used 24-85. I tried it - I liked it, for one thing: when cropping a picture at 85 mm, the sharpness is normal, at 24 mm a specific soap. What is it - tell me, explain, maybe the reason is in the lens or ...?

  • Michael

On FF and BF checked on different FR? Which lens with a stub or not?
I tried without a stab. A very good result was everything clearly on all FR

  • anonym

Look at an example photo of Victor 12.11.2013 at 03:43

  • Igor

I saw examples of photos, but the question worries:! When cropping a picture from 24mm, i.e. when zooming in on the camera's display, the frame is not sharp. Can someone explain - why so?

  • Michael

Check the Front (FF) and back (BF) focus, the focus can "blur". Try to squeeze the diaphragm again, see what happens .. It's not clear what it means not sharp in your case ..

  • Igor

When shooting at 85 mm - the sharpness when enlarging the finished image is beyond praise. Increasing the f-number improves the quality, but all the same, why is the sharpness worse by 24 mm. Is it all 24-85, or just on my copy?

  • Ivan

Advise: this lens or 28-105d (on D7000)?

  • Oleg

I liked the lens. More compact than 24-70, the quality is very sane. Sharpness is high. The bokeh is not very good. But if you want macro or plastic bokeh in a portrait, I use Zeiss. And I would call this lens an excursion and walking lens - when you take pictures in a hurry and that's it. And for the soul you need another and in a calm atmosphere)

Who cares about the photo from this lens on the crop. my first photos on the Central Control Commission.

I looked at your pictures. I don't understand the logic. Why set ISO 1600 in the daytime? You get digital noise. And also the use of flash ... A flat face and glowing dots in the eyes.

  • Eugene

Good afternoon, Arkady !!! I need your advice, on the occasion I got a Nikon d60 whale. The device turned out to be small (the right palm hangs halfway), it’s an awkward focus. For the future I’m thinking of getting a full d610 frame, but for now I need a lens instead of a full-time one on Nikon d60 with the condition of full use in the future on a full-frame model. Is such a compromise possible? Wishes for a new lens, it would be nice with a stabilizer, universal, costing within 20 rubles.
All the best !!! Thanks in advance to Eugene

    • Igor

I was 24-85. In conjunction with D 5100 - lathers at the wide end and with an external flash requires exposure compensation up to +1. Sold - bought Tamron 28-75. Quite another matter and decent bokeh. I bought it on Slando at a nice price ...

Only buzzing wildly and no stub :)

  • alex

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR did you even have a lens in your hands? Scribblers! It just infuriates your nonsense

    • Victor

alex, reviewed the comments and accidentally saw your. I understand that you are so emotional about “Only buzzing wildly and there is no stub”? When "delirium enrages", I recommend carefully reading the previous comment. We are talking about Tamron 28-75. And if you read all the comments, you saw my link to the photos taken by Nikkor 24-85 (this is to the question, did I hold it in my hands) :)

  • Dmitriy

Good afternoon. Arkady, I ask for advice. I choose a “workhorse” for full frame for little money. I read your reviews on Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical and old Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5. I understand that the second option is more universal in terms of focal length (not counting the smaller angle). I give a report that the 105th has no stub. But ... Is there a difference in the picture of these glasses, which would have outweighed the scales? (used 105th is actually two times cheaper). Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Better VR option.

  • Dmitriy

    Thanks for the advice.

  • Dmitriy

Thanks again for the advice. Bought Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical. Quite adequate standard lens for a full frame. Considering the price. (purchased for 400 cu) After reading the information about "a large number of these on the secondary housing", I shoveled it too. Didn't find “many :)”. I took a new one. Sharp, contrasting. Distortion is a little annoying. It is being treated.

And can this lens be checked accurately enough on a cropped camera? - What do I mean? - I bought one for the D7000, I plan to switch to full frame. On my copy, there is a scratch on the lens facing the matrix 5m from the edge, I'm afraid how would not come out later. What area of the rear lens is generally used? The scratch is located below, along the long side of the matrix.

  • Sergei

A small clarification)) - not 5m but 5mm from the edge of the lens.

  • Anna

Tell me please, is it worth buying this lens for the D7100?

  • Yernar

What is better in optical quality for this Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR or Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED?

  • Andrei

    It is possible to purchase Nikon 24-85 mm f / 3.5-4.5G IF-ED AF-S
Those. lens without a stub what can you say about the quality of this lens?
It is planned on the d5100 crop the focal ones are satisfied.

  • Alexander Malyaev

I came across an interesting comparison of picture quality on a full frame of Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G, Tamron SP 24-70mm f / 2.8 Di VC and Nikon 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G. Interesting for two reasons: the first is that a state employee got into the comparison of top-end glasses, and the fact that the comparison was carried out thoroughly both in the center and in the corners at the entire focal range and with different apertures. So, in a nutshell, the quality of Nikon 24-85 f / 3.5-4.5G at its price is more than decent, and on the crop it should be even more so since the edges will be off-screen. By the way, the owners of Nikon D7100 speak very flatteringly about the sharpness of this lens on their carcasses. I rarely use a wide angle.

  • Kairat

Good day, Arkady. Tell me, whether it is a weasel, which lens is better as a standard lens: described, Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical or TAMRON SP AF 28-75 mm F / 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical. Thank you in advance.

  • Alexander

Hello Arkady. Do you think it is worth wearing a Nikon D7000 DX-format camera on this lens? Purpose: shooting nature close-up - leaves, flowers, fruits, etc., subject photography. Do you think it is not too dark for these purposes? My budget is small, expensive glasses are too expensive, so I would like to know your impressions of how this lens behaves when shooting in macro mode, in terms of chromatic aberrations, sharpness and focusing accuracy (speed is not important). Or do these parameters vary from instance to instance? Sorry for the “bunch” of stupid questions. Thank you in advance for your answer, Thank you very much for your work. Sincerely, Alexander.

    • anonym

Alexander. If you are interested, I can take a few shots of this lens in conjunction with the Nikon D7000. Write just what specifically to photograph and with what settings.

      • anonym

I am not Alexander, but I myself am interested in such a bunch in terms of shooting portraits on a 4.5 by 85 mm aperture. Can you take a couple of shots?

    • Peter Sh.

Sorry to fit in, but you don't need this lens at all - it's for a full frame. Whale 18-55 VR will do your job perfectly.
