Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

According provided by lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical many thanks to Vladimir Tarasyuk. What do all these 'letters' in the long name of the lens mean, you can see here.

Review of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical - standard universal lens for full-frame cameras Nikon fx. Released in the summer of 2012 and often comes with a camera Nikon D600 and maybe will go with D610. My guess is that the Nikon 24-85mm VR was specifically designed for the amateur full-frame cameras that became Nikon D600 и Nikon D610... Most likely in the future it will be installed on all Nikon amateur full-frame cameras. Despite the fact that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is actually a 'kit' lens for FX cameras, it performs well in real conditions. Probably Nikon did its best to ensure that the first full-length 'inexpensive' kit was warmly received by amateur photographers.

Optical lens design

Optical lens design

Nikon 24-85mm VR is a lens with all the modern features you need. Here you can find both Image Stabilizer and Internal Focus and slightly improved aperture F / 3.5-4.5 (not F / 3.5-5.6), compact body and 3,5x zoom. There is a very similar lens, but without an Image Stabilizer - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED SWM IF Aspherical. The latter was produced from 2002-2006 in Japan and Thailand, and between 2006 and 2012 there was a 'chasm', as few people were interested in budget lenses for expensive (at that time) full-frame cameras.

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-85 VR

The lens body is made of plastic, but well assembled - no backlash or obvious flaws. The Nikon 24-85mm VR weighs a little less than 500 grams, and will not weigh too heavily on a rather massive full-frame camera. The mount is metal, the zoom ring is rubberized, but the focusing ring is made of plastic.

The focusing of the lens is quite quiet and the focusing speed is above average. I cannot write that Nikon 24-85mm VR focuses quickly, as its focusing speed is inferior even to some old similar lenses - Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF и Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5. It’s a pity that even a 20 year old Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 Ultrasonic focuses faster. Nikon 24-85mm VR has internal focusing with useful mode 'M / A'. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens works like a vacuum pump :). In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 145 degrees.

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

Basic TX Nikon 24-85VR

I shot a small American-style wedding using the Nikon 24-85mm VR (unfortunately, I can’t show it), but I can say with certainty that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is the best among inexpensive similar regular zooms. The weak side, of course, is not the best focusing speed, 'humped' distortion and vignetting with a drop in sharpness at the edges of the image when used on full-frame cameras. For me, vignette and weak edge sharpness are not always important. But on Nikon DX cameras, the lens is sharp across the entire field and at all focal lengths, while EGF is 36-127,5mm. I really liked that the Nikon 24-85mm VR is not afraid of backlight at all and creates images with pleasant contrast and color reproduction. If we change Nikon 24-85mm VR, then only for faster and faster Nikon 24-70 / 2.8, Nikon 28-70 / 2.8 or the universal Nikon 24-120 / 4 and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon FX cameras. Of course, the lens has obvious flaws, but in general it is completely a 'working machine'.

  • Alexey B.

I'm going to switch to full frame. What is better as a regular zoom (in terms of picture) this lens or Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-D NIKKOR.

    • Sergey

      Nikkor 24-120 / 4 VR

    • Roman D

      24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR definitely
24-120 / 4 for its price is not justified

      • Novel

I confirm. With all due respect to Nikon from 24-120, they specifically screwed up. Not only is it more expensive than analog Canon 24-105so optically worse.

Z.Y. I never justify Canon, 24-105 also has a large bouquet of shortcomings. But at least he justifies his present value as a universal street reporter.

        • Sergey

          I have both lenses in stock, and Nikkor 24-120 / 4 and Canon 24-105 / 4L
optically Nikon is better - which is confirmed by a bunch of tests, from DxO to lenstypes.
Kenon 24-105 / 4 - first of all, not even 4. read in the net, really darker.
strongest vignette and sharpness closer to 8.
so try to measure both lenses or give a link where it would appear that Nikon is 24-120 worse :)

      • Sergey

        work with both lenses.
24-120 / 4 - yes, dear, so constant aperture and great focal lengths, not counting the best anti-reflective coating in the industry. so it costs about $ 1100.

24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR - plastic craft, with sharpness only in the center. and selling it later for a reasonable price is not easy.

    • Valery

      Best of all 24-70 2/8!

      • kiev_poznyaki

        Exactly! But the price ...

        • Basil

the neck will fall off =) from 24-70 :) Better half a half =)

        • Denis

:)) At 24-70, the price is constantly quietly admitted, I myself want this lens and expect it to become even more cheaper :)). The fact of the massive availability of 24-70s in the secondary market is also hindering: (? They usually don't part with good lenses, try to find a used Nikkor 70-200 f2,8 :)) ...

Thanks to the author for the next review, a good station wagon at an affordable price, really worthy prints of autumn in all its glory.

    • Roman D

      Keep

  • Sergei

worked with this lens, was in a whale with D600.
on the full frame - a mediocre lens, with a lot of problems with the picture. I think that the lens was made for the whale as cheaply as possible with the lowest possible quality picture.
at its price of 500-600 dollars in the market, it is drained at 300 dollars after buying a whale.
Kenon in a kit with 6D puts an excellent lens 24-105 / 4 elka and a kit costs the same money as the D610 / D600.

    • Roman D

      Great Elka 24-105 / 4?
think write. if it is elka, then it should be designated as 0.5L
      almost 5% distortion at a wide angle, a vignette even at f / 5.6 to 2EV (I am silent about f / 4)

Nikon 24-85 loses except by a noticeable drop in sharpness in the corners (which did not stop me from getting and printing excellent shots) and a little more chromate than the canon. and this at a double low price.

      • Sergey

for your money in a whale - and it costs 24-105 / 4L in a whale only 600-700 dollars (the difference is a sun whale carcass)
this is a great lens. much better in all respects than nikon 24-85 - optical design, performance, focal, etc.
Well, it can’t cost 24-85 from Nikon as much as Elka from Kenon :))))

      • anonym

24-104 f4l from kenon is much better than 24-85. Who has serious problems with the vignette and sharpness, break your horseradish against the wall, maybe I had 3 lenses, used it at different times for 5dm2, 7d and 6d. In sharpness, he is magnificent. Sharper than 24-70 2.8 L Who says there is no f4? Morons? Do not confuse relative aperture with light transmission! Learn the materiel!

    • Roman D

well, almost twice (+ 85%) price

  • Alexey

Is there a normal bunch on d 5100?

    • Roman D

no, you’ll be left without a wide angle. read the comment below

    • Sergey

      Of course not.
      this is money thrown away.
meaning in nikon 24-85 - if you buy it for $ 300 as a temporary solution.
at $ 300 we have them poured on the secondary having bought a whale D600.
for $ 600 to buy 24-85 - it makes no sense in principle.

  • Arthur

For Nikon d90 what do you recommend? And leave them who is in 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.
tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 AT-X PRO (already used - but in good condition)
Tamron AF SP 28-75 F / 2,8 Di XR LD Asp. (IF) Macro for Nikon
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical
For Nikon d90 what do you recommend?

    • Roman D

      d90 better than Sigma AF 17-70mm f / 2.8-4 DC HSM OS | C
with those insoles you won’t have a wide angle at all

      • Arthur

Have you tried shooting with tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 AT-X PRO lenses
Tamron AF SP 28-75 F / 2,8 Di XR LD Asp. (IF) Macro for Nikon
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical?
        What are the best ???

        • Roman D

          I now have a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR on the D700
the other two have not tried.
they start at 28mm, which will look like 42mm on the crop. for a crop, take a cropped staff. go to FF - sell.

    • Sashko

Bullet Tokina AT-X 28-70mm f2.8 on D300, so in practice I will say a wide kuta will be good everywhere. Reshta ob'ktiviv will give the same problem. Recommended for Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (DX), Tokina AT-X PRO 16-50mm f2.8 (DX).

  • Anonymous 1

Please share your impressions of comparing this survey lens with the old 24-85 / 2,8-4D. I'm in thought ...

  • Volodimir

Observing a review of the mine, in front of him is the old 24-85 f2.8-4 in the ideal standard, which is a sales volume due to the software on the open aperture at 24 mm and at 85mm, if the bullet is more pronounced at long distances up to ob'єktіv zyomki, that came to gradually tighten the diaphragm. In case of zyomtsi on the visitor's neighbors to mdf everything is clear and quick.
The little one in the old more will add (alive, big), in the new trocha "plastic", I want more contrast and clear.
In a new way, I have been encouraged to have good and excellent stability, make it easier to use micro-lenses when I’m in front of the window (it’s important for bagatomegapixel matrices), I’m able to perform better operation at all focuses !!! Also, a plus є those that have a little motor excitement (focus quietly on the old).
Porvnyuvav on the crop d7100, for the most part it was accepted bulo pratsyuvati with a name of 3.5-4.5, after which the bullet is sold for 2.8-4.

  • Anonymous 1

The thing is. that I have been using film 28-70 / 3,5-4,5 for many years and I am VERY pleased with its wonderful portrait drawing, especially at a fully open aperture; excellent bokeh, and even in the case of covering the "hole" 9 aperture blades help out (this is on a budget lens!), again the device is made in a very Japanese way, unbreakable. But a problem arose: it would be necessary to add the focus length. And 85 mm would be just enough. It has long been ripe for the idea to change to 24-85 / 2,8-4, but there are too many different opinions about it, I just can't add 2 + 2. And here Arkady claims that the new 24-85 / 3,5-4,5 seems to be better in terms of characteristics.
ferki is, of course, good, but not to lose the main thing - the plasticity and picturesqueness of the image. Otherwise, it will turn out like with Nikkor 70-300: his cheap, but surprisingly beautiful in design Tamron 70-300 smashed and replaced with “carrion” Nikkor, formally sharp and contrasting, but “deaf” in the picture. I'm afraid of this ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don't think you will like the 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR, as the old line is better than the new one in terms of artistry problems. I think that the 24-85 was not created for portrait purposes at all, the better the lens is technically, the better for a station wagon in this case.

      • Sergey

        + 100 %
the lens is sharpened for multi-pixel arrays to allow them to be centered and only centered. contrast is twisted to the detriment of everything else.
the construction was made according to the principle - maximum economy for minimum suitable quality.
        total
        - spread in quality even within one box
        - boring dry picture
        - detailing only in the center, then - soap
        - abundant use of plastic - low weight

      • Nicholas

what would you recommend the lens on the d600 as a regular?

    • Dmitriy

I read your question about Nikon AF 28-70 \ 3,5-4,5
If it's still relevant, is there a wonderful and inexpensive Nikon AF 28-85 \ 3,5-4,5? apparently the same "ruler" as yours.
I really like the picture of this lens, especially on focal 50-85mm. (use with D90)
Before that I looked closely at Nikon AF 24-85 \ 2,8-4.5D, but the reviews on the Internet are very different, and there is Sigma AF 24-70 \ 2,8 D (heavy in weight), the modern ones did not like the picture.
If interested, I will answer questions, I will show some pictures.
      Sincerely. Dmitriy.

Old dobiry 28-105 1: 3.5-4.5 D kudi krashy bude, and not at all, oh well, dumb VR, or overpaying styles for VR - as for me, vibrate a larger range and a wonderful picture
with normal hands it is possible i 200mm to 1/30 knowledge

  • Victor

I took this glass 7 months ago for $ 420 quite deliberately for the sprinkled 5100. On the spade I completely avoided problems: distortion, diffraction, vignetting and soap.
I get a very sharp picture with good colors. Blur the background, too, like it (but it's not for everyone). He planned, if necessary, in a wide angle, to put the whale 18-55. For all the time, it has never been needed. 24mm. quite enough. For this money, I am very pleased with the quality of the glass.

    • anonym

Doesn't he suck dust? On off. the site says that there is a rubber gasket on the mount. I also want to take the 7100 for myself. I think "old" or "new" The old one is more expensive.

  • Michael

Good afternoon, dear readers and users of the site. I ask for help. I use a DSLR D5100. I want to change whale 18-55 to something more interesting. I photograph mostly a child. I considered a variant of this lens and Tamron AF 28-75mm F2.8. At 24-85 I'm afraid that the aperture is not enough for beautiful photos (bokeh). I must say right away that I have not tried anything other than 18-55 (except for Helios 81). Tell me what would be better to take for my case ...
Special thanks to Arkady for the widest review.

  • Igor

If you like Helios, I recommend Nikon 50 / 1.8zh, it gives great bokeh, and the autofocus is very fast. I think it is the best lens for the D5100.

  • Michael

Nikon 50 / 1,8zh will be a replacement for Helios 100%, but I want to have a zoom in the state as well. shooting a child and it’s not always convenient to run to catch a good shot. Therefore, I puzzle that it is better to take. Native drip speak better but aperture ?? How much it will be worse than Tamronovskaya 2,8 I do not know.

  • Victor

For Michael. See my comment for 18.10.2013/28/75. I can add that initially Tamron XNUMX-XNUMX took it through the online store. The next day I returned it. Focus marriage (not front-back). After that I took the described lens. I repeat - very satisfied. When it comes to background blur, it's not just the open aperture that determines it. I sometimes upload pictures to Yandex. If interested, take a look. All of them are made on this glass. http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/sichkar-vic/

    • Michael

Thank you very much for the answer Victor. Probably all the same, I'd better try to take Nikonovsky 24-85 (all that is native). Your pictures on this glass impressed. And to him also half a half 1,8 and I will be happy :).
And how does the video turn out on it, have you not tried it?

  • Michael

In addition, it is possible to take inexpensively 18-105. Who used respond that it would be better 24-85 or 18-105.

  • Victor

I like the video on this lens too. Just read about the features of shooting on DSLRs. If you set the "saturated" or "landscape" mode when shooting a photo, then with a video the contrast, saturation must be driven to zero. Or "neutral" mode. Then the colors are real and the shadows are worked out. I tried 18-105 on D7000. Glass is definitely better than 18-55. But you shouldn't compare with this. And it costs almost two times cheaper than that. And don't forget 18-105 for a crop. Pay attention to what Arkady wrote in this review. A lens for a full frame, and if for a full frame it is just a good lens, then for a crop it is excellent (the picture is taken from the center of the glass, which means maximum sharpness, and the absence of "soap", distortion, chrome aberrations). I also wanted in addition 50 / 1,8G. But now I'm not in a hurry :). Somehow this glass became for all occasions :)

    • Oleg

Good day . I understand that 24-85 f 3.5-4.5 for the d7000 is cool glass, because I can not decide on a regular lens. If possible in a nutshell your impressions
      Thank you.

      • Alexander

I have been using such a lens (though the old version, without VR) with the D7000 for about 3 years now. Mostly landscapes, panoramas, sometimes portraits, subject shooting. In general, an everyday tool that I'm quite happy with. I change it only during the photo hunt at 55-300.

        • Oleg

          Thank you.

  • Michael

Who can advise Offer 24-85 without a stub (Japanese) of the year until about 2004 issue. Is it worth taking it or is it better to look away from BP a fresh little difference in the used price of 600 UAH towards BP.?

  • Snezana

I want to buy on the D7000, is this lens suitable or would you recommend something else?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it does. I can not recommend, because the needs are not indicated.

      • Snezana

As a staff member, children can take off their matinees and take them on trips. There are 50 1,4 G. I choose the zoom, which would be cheap and cheerful :)))

        • Michael

          Snezhana from personal experience ...
I tried this glass on the advice of Victor (special thanks) I liked it very much in terms of versatility (well, if you don't need a wide angle). As the zoom is good for all cases, but in a room without puff, it’s not very good. I took myself 35 / 1,8 Super ... So far, the zoom is not needed. Indoors is gorgeous compared to f3,5.
If there is a need for a zoom, then I will take only this 24-85.

          • Snezana

            Thank you!

          • Snezana

So I wondered if it makes sense to take 35 with the already available fifty dollars? I understand that on the crop the focal length increases ... will there be a significant difference between 35 and 50?

      • Stepan

Arkady, tell me, please. I have D90 + 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G and 50 f / 1.8d. Genre preferences - portrait. Does it make sense to swap the 18-105 for this 24-85 lens in terms of being more versatile for portraits, or won't it make a big difference? Thanks in advance!

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

just bought on the D600 for a wedding report

  • Igor

Tell me! There are two lenses 24-85. One with a stub and St. filter 72mm, the second without a stub and St. filter 67mm. What are their differences? Which is preferable for D5100?

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Easy to handle with good colors and contrast. There are very few misses in focusing. For those who have no time or do not want to bother. The picture is rustic, the flu will not work. In one word, universal, I am satisfied.
Not suitable for creativity, but stable.

    • Mkhail

Igor has a difference in their optical design and the presence of a stub. Better of course with a stub, but the difference on the crop with an unarmed glance is invisible. You can look at the optical design and characteristics here http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/specs.html#14_24-xx.
Without a stub, it is not produced for a long time, but with a stub they started recently. So if you take it without a stub, you need to carefully examine it. Unscrupulous sellers play very strongly on this type of brand new one (without a stub) and break the price for it (second market price is about $ 130-180)

  • Sergei

    Arkady, thanks for the review!
Which of the lenses (at equal focal lengths) on the crop did you find more interesting in terms of sharpness, pattern:
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical
    or
Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical
I choose a station wagon on d7000, 24-85 focal lenses are quite suitable for my purposes, I can give preference to 16-85 only if it is better optically or more solidly made. Thank you in advance for your advice.

  • Alexander

    Hello Arkady!
Thanks for your reviews, but after reading this review, as well as others and "thoughts", I did not find some statements for myself. I want to ask you for advice, because I can't decide on the choice of lens for the D600, I need a station wagon with a decent picture for every day and for travel

    3. Tamron AF SP 28-75 F / 2,8 Di XR LD Asp. (IF) Macro for Nikon (or version without motor)
As can be seen from the list, budget glasses are considered, I am more inclined to 28-105mm, based on examples of photos, I want to hear a professional's resume.
    Thank you.

And how does he behave on the crop? Is it worth taking for a crop?

You can see how it behaves on the crop in the galleries from the Nikon APS-C DX D80 in the same review.

Now with the advent of more affordable full-format DSLRs such as Nikon D600 / 610, many people began to wonder what to get lenses.
As for me, it’s best to use fixes (for example, my set of 24 (landscape), 50 (staff) 85 (portrait)). Someone else wants 135.
BUT sometimes because of circumstances there is no time (or desire) to change fixes. Then without a zoom in any way. Right now I reviewed a lot of information and selected the following candidates for myself:
If you have enough money - Nikon 24-70 2,8g, but the price bites, and it's too heavy ...
You can 28-70 2,8d, but even harder, also a little expensive, and even a bit old on the secondary market
There are aperture Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 24-70. But the price is under 6 and 10 thousand UAH and, nevertheless, a third-party manufacturer, and the quality varies greatly.
It turns out that you will have to take FROM CHEAP either Nikon 24-85 BP or 28-105D. The first is more stable in the quality (sharpness and contrast) of the picture, but at the same time it is more "dry". And 28-105 - there is no stabilizer and the quality of lenses on the second-hand market varies.
Many may still recall about Nikon 24-85 2,8-4d, but there are many negatives about the non-working open diaphragm on the SHU and the end, and the lack of a stub further aggravates the situation.

By the way, I advise you to write uv. Arkady separately article on the choice of staffer for full-frame Nikonov, painfully lately this topic has become relevant.

It was not about the TV range - everything is clearer there)
