Review Mir-20M 3,5 / 20

Radozhiv already has a detailed review of such a lens - MC Mir-20N 3.5 / 20 (Arsenal plant, Kiev), which differs from Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 (KMZ, Krasnogorsk) in its bayonet, body frame, enlightenment and aperture control method. Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 has an M42 landing thread and a diaphragm switch 'AM'.

Mir-20M 3,5 / 20

Rear view Mir-20M 3,5 / 20. The photo shows the diaphragm control switch AM

Unlike MS Mir-20N 3.5 / 20, the Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 focus ring rotates approximately 180 degrees and there is an infrared shift mark on the lens. Also, Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 has a minimum aperture of F / 16, against F / 22 at MS Mir-20N 3.5 / 20... MDF is the same 18cm. The lens is made entirely of metal and glass. Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 has no thread for light filters in front of the lens. But color filters, of which there are 3 pieces in the case with the lens, can be screwed into the thread near the rear lens of the lens.

Mir-20M 3,5 / 20

Simple enlightenment of the front lens of the Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 lens

Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 - has impressive dimensions and an interesting convex front lens, looks very unusual on the camera :). The protective front cap simply slips snugly onto the lens.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Mir-20M 3,5 / 20

Light filter ZHZ-2x mounted on the Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 lens

Optically, Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 turned out to be weak, noticeably worse than the brother with multi-lightening MS Mir-20N 3.5 / 20. Actually, there aren’t even any sensible shots with Mir-20M 3,5 / 20, only I wasted time with him. Perhaps I got the wrong World-20M :)

The parameters of the photo in the review:
All shot on Canon EOS 350D. On-camera JPEG L, high quality. Noise reduction at slow shutter speeds was turned off. Parameters: contrast correction - 0, sharpness - 0, saturation - 0, tone color - 0. Used white balance: 'Shadow' and 'Cloudy'. The size of the photos has been reduced to 2 MP.

Conclusions:

There are a huge number of different Mir-20 lenses. Mir-20M 3,5 / 20 is not the best option. In my review I had a very battered copy with serial number 842141. Perhaps the lenses that are better preserved will show the best result in the photo. Mir-20 is one of the few Soviet lenses that provide a truly wide angle of view when used on cropped cameras.

Comments: 40, on the topic: Obzor Mir-20M 3,5 / 20

It seems to me that it was stored in a high acidity room. It is because of this that the lens glass loses its transparency and becomes "cloudy".

  • Madness Scif

yes, there is a problem in the glass - as if some kind of shroud ...
Arkady, have a quarrel that I am moving away from the topic, but I still cannot understand - what is the glazed slot in the nikon n8008s and nikon n90s (and not only) above the viewfinder shaft ???? what is it for ??? Does anyone know ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Optical amplification of the brightness of the information line in the JVI. Described here https://radojuva.com.ua/2013/09/endorphin/

Good afternoon, I got into the hands of a good copy of the MS world 20m, export 99g release, I can do a little review.
I had to sit with the adapter for a couple of days, changing the working segment, generally satisfied with the lens, sometimes it catches hares, but this is not critical.

  • Madness Scif

tobish, if the light hits it, the information line in the viewfinder will be better highlighted ??? I noticed on the d3100 and d7000 digital mirrors and on the nikon f65 film camera - if you shoot forgiving the sun, the information line fades. I will have to try with n90s

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, that's right.

  • Madness Scif

Thank you very much for the clarification))), as I understand it, does not affect the quality of exposure and metering. It's a pity that they don't put them in digital-SLR cameras - otherwise it's really almost impossible to see what you are turning in the settings against the sun, especially when the high-aperture optics are hanging.

    • Gene jb

I see everything on Canon. What do you use?

      • Madness Scif

nikon d7000, nikon n90s. looking back at nikon d3s or nikon d800

I have had a 20m world since the early 80s. Stood at LTL Practice. EXTREMELY sharp lens with rich colors. Somewhat distorts the geometry, like a fisheye, but it does not interfere. easy to get used to keep the horizon. When shooting against the sun, he showed himself from the beautiful side. Hard. very sharp Very good for landscapes. I preferred it to other widths like Flektogon or Mir 1B
I am extremely surprised by this negative review. NOTHING like this was noticed in principle, in terms of “color” it was much more pleasant than the similar “Zonnar 4/20
All these well-deserved accolades go to
BUT. FOR SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, I HAVE NOT TESTED IT ON A DIGITAL CAMERA. I tried to install Nikon 801 on film and it turned out that when lifting the mirror, it touches the rear lens. on crops, the main lenses started with F 18 mm and an absolutely working and good lens “left a spare”

  • Novel

Yes, big and dark and squalid. If there are regular 18 on the crop, it makes no sense to look in his direction. On FF, too, not very much. And due to the high cost of Zonnar 20/4, it is better to pay attention to Samyang 14 2.8 - modern, wide and luminous.

  • Mahal Makhalych

    Informative.
    I will make an offer.
Organize data on Soviet lenses in one article.
For example: on focal or relative apertures.
And the very best one available :-)
Also, purchase recommendations - is it worth looking for a specific model or not ...

    • Novel

Mahal Makhalych, the whole family of Helios-44. A high-aperture fifty kopecks literally for a penny. On the second, perhaps, Jupiter-37 is a moderate telephoto, not very dark. Well, and Industar-50-2 - the price, size and peculiar pattern. Well, that's all. The rest is rare, expensive and not for everybody. Or frankly weak by today's standards, although capable of producing good results.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a long time already everything is there - https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/04/optika-na-nikon/#what-mount

  • Mahal Makhalych

    Thank you!
My Nikon d7100 coexists wonderfully with Helios 44 N. Remained from Kiev 19.
There is Jupiter 37. Here there is a thread. Where to look for a decent adapter? And is it worth it?

    • Dmitriy

On the website of the Kiev Arsenal store. there are "backdrops" for nikon.

  • Farid

Arkady. You've got the right lens. This lens gives me the same image quality. No clarity, no color. These lenses were convenient to use on Zeniths when photographing the scene. When an overview shot of the room was required. There was simply no other. That's all. And in the b / w photo, most of the problems are not even a problem. Moreover, when drawing up a photo table. The quality of the picture was not as important as the information content.

    • Jury

Having seen the review of the forensic scientist, I join the comment about shooting from the chest. I tried it myself on the K5 crop Mir-20m and Mir-20N, the latter, although with scratches on the front lens, looked more worthy in terms of sharpness and color. The new Mir-20m had to be adjusted to infinity, otherwise it was impossible to look at this soap ... Conclusion: if you have a lens or it was inexpensive, it is quite possible to fit it to a carcass for a landscape and interior. If you have funds, it is better to immediately take something more useful for your system without wasting time on it.

  • Sergei

I recently acquired Mir1, but yes it’s cloudy, and Arkady repeatedly mentioned bespontovy glass on the crop)

  • Anatoly

Arkady, Tell me please, when installing this lens on Nikon (for example, D7000), its focal length will not be 20mm, but 30mm, and will it lose the meaning of the wide-angle? Not to mention the infinity that can be returned if conjured with the lens. Do I understand correctly? Thanks.
PS: A very interesting site, I've been reading for a week :-)

  • Ivan

Arkady, I have a similar lens .. similar, because it has the designation MC MIR-20M 3.5 / 20, M42 thread (designations are in English), Krasnogorsk, has a pronounced lilac enlightenment, infinity after 4 meters on a scale and serial number 942181. There is also a thread for filters on the front frame of the case. Is this an export option? Or a modification?

  • Azamat

how to achieve infinity on nikon?

    • Ivan

I have through an adapter with a lens. Focusing is almost always on infinity. With different types of adapters, it can cling to a mirror on the D600.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

There is a newer version of the multiline lens. It would be interesting to see an overview of this, since KMZ produces and sells them so far.

  • anonym

and at the zenith ET will be normal?

  • a lion

The review presents a very poor lens option. I tried 5 kmz'eshnyh world of 20m and they are all the same, they were from 87 to 97 years of release. All gave the same picture. I shot them on kenon 1ds m2, 5d, sony a7r. This lens is so sharp in the center that it easily resolves the a7p or Nikon d800 matrix, only here there is a very strong drop in sharpness from the center to the edge. If we compare it with the Pope Flektogon from Pope Zeiss 20mm, then Zeiss gives a more uniform sharpness in the field - smaller in the center, slightly larger at the edges, while the Zeiss center does not allow modern matrices from 18MP. Personally, I like the world more, it is sharper, but from practice I would prefer not to use either one or the other, choosing Nikkor 20, 24, 28mm. If someone says that it hurts expensive
, then I will say that in a decent condition, the world is 20 cheaper than 6tr, 'respectively, the price tag for a flektagon in a decent condition starts from 20tr. Nikkor 28 bu can be found from 6tr in good condition.

  • Artem

Is it true that filters are part of the optical circuit and without them it does not work normally?

  • Anatoly

Artem buy a bottle of Jean-Jacques cognac a hacksaw and an adapter ring for a Nikon bayonet and if you live in Ukraine I can give you a touch, show the photos and tell you how to put Mir 20M on a Nikon d7000. At the same time, the lens focuses from a distance of 5 cm and has infinity ...

  • Frizzle

Mir-1 was intended primarily as a replacement for Zenith cameras and others with compatible mounts.

    • Anatoly

All world brands have produced the world's best lenses for their cameras, but what divine photographs are obtained on Nikon d 7000 if you put Vegu 12b with infinity. Planar 50 1.8 Falklander 75 3.5 Topkor 58 1.4 Distagon 35 2.8 or Fujinon evs 24 2.8 yes, they all have different flange lengths, but if you are not in a hurry using the same hacksaw for metal in 3 years, I rearranged more than 30 objectives of which 3 became macro since the mirror was hooked 1 was thrown out. With the price of a set of used optics less than $ 1500 and a range from 14mm to 500mm, I enjoyed shooting with fixes and rested ... Panoramas of 18-20 frames shot on Mir 20m compete with Zeiss and Japanese optics and sometimes give a more interesting picture.

  • Pastor

Recently acquired this glass and in general my copy pleased me. Apparently the review was not the most successful option. My is quite sharp in the center with 3.5, however, the edges sag noticeably. And even on f8 the edges on ff are still lousy. But on the crop is quite normal, since the soap itself is cut off. Given that I bought it very cheaply, I am very pleased with the lens. Of course, on crop 18-55 it will produce an image no worse, well, on ff I have 17-40 4l gives more sharpness and uniformity in the field of the frame, but still the world can be used for fun and as a temporary measure to close a wide angle on ff.

  • Andrey movie

Tell me, did he buy separately or went full-time? If so, with which lens?

  • Andrey movie

    Which camera *

  • Sergei

The lens is not even bad. But worried about the strong vinenting over the entire exposure range. But how to deal with this is not clear. maybe someone will tell you. Canon 6 d camera

  • petya

Probably licked from someone and as always unsuccessfully :)

All of these absolutely well-deserved accolades apply to film cameras.
Mir 20 is a great lens, I am sincerely surprised by the words of A. Shapoval, Obviously they are caused by poor alignment of his lens to the camera

I will add that the diaphragm on it is jumping, it is turned off by the A-M switch to the non-automatic position. manual The resolution to the edges drops moderately, I would even say - imperceptibly to the photographer's eye. half a stop faster than Flektogon.
This is a lens with a clearly defined “character”
He left the best impression on me.
As I already wrote - it is NECESSARY to “shoot” the fixes when changing the camera along the collimator to this camera. The results of the fitting will often be simply stunning.
For example, my Nikkor 35 - 70, when switching from Nikon 401 to Nikon 801st, “faded” And only after the collimator adjustment in the workshop “played” for real, as if the lens had been changed
