MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 review

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 review

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 is a standard standard lens for film cameras with M42 thread. This is one of the last mass standard fifty kopecks for Zenit cameras.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50

View of the MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 lens on the ZK

First impressions of the lens are negative - the plastic body in the hands feels like a cheap Chinese toy. The focusing ring is not very comfortable, it is tapered. And the chamfers of the lenses are not blackened, and there are only 6 aperture blades, well, even a dark matte color. Poor manufacturing quality is associated with a reduction in the cost of production - when creating a lens, they tried to minimize the costs of manufacturing the lens and at the same time obtain good optical quality. In the end it turned out, but in my opinion it became a kind of nail in the coffin of Soviet optics, which at that time was already far behind foreign analogues.

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50

Lens trunk MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50

There are many Zenitar brand lenses with a focal length of 50mm, for example MS Zenitar-M 1,9 / 50 и Zenitar-M 1,7 / 50. Fifty zenitar is usually very sharp and, in general, good lenses. The lens from this review is slightly inferior to them in build quality, but optically pretty good.

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50

Multi-Enlightenment of the MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 Lens

The focus ring of the MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 rotates 180 degrees, while the trunk of the lens lengthens noticeably, and the front lens does not rotate when focusing. The lens has a focus distance scale from infinity to 35smwhich is pretty good for a fifty dollars. But due to the fact that MDF is small enough 180 degrees of the focusing ring is not enough for smooth focusing. There is also a depth of field scale and an infrared shift mark. Aperture closes to F / 16, between F / 2 и F / 16 there are many intermediate values. Also MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 has a blinking aperture device without aperture control switch. Front filter diameter non-standard - 46mm, it will be difficult for him to find a cover and a filter. On the lens you can find the inscription M1: 5 which informs about the maximum magnification that the lens creates when focusing on MDF.

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
All shot on Canon EOS 350D. EGF lens on Canon 350D is 80mm. On-camera JPEG L, high quality (without any processing). Noise reduction at slow shutter speeds was turned off. Parameters: contrast correction - 0, sharpness - 0, saturation - 0, tone color - 0. Used white balance: 'Mainly cloudy'. Photo size has been reduced to 3MP.

Conclusions:

MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 optically turned out to be a pretty good fifty dollars - in the center of the frame it is sharp even at F / 2.0, holds side and back light well, bokeh is not for everybody. But the workmanship of MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 is very weak, and aperture slightly decreased compared to the older brothers of the lens. Personally, I would buy exceptionally high-quality metal old Zeniths.

I bought it “for change” when I ordered Zenitar-fish through the KMZ online store.
Curiosity was stronger than common sense.
I won’t say anything for the picture, but the quality of the materials is so lousy, and even in a compartment with rubbing plastic, it discourages them from shooting at all.
    I hope we work together.

  • Timur

And the drawing, by the way, turned out to be interesting. Blur liked more than my zuiko 50 1.8, pentacon 50 1.8.
And the drawing - it's some kind of familiar from childhood, I can't explain the sensation normally.
A good variety for little money (I have it the 8th fifty dollars in a row, the first is domestic), and you can close your eyes to the construct.
I have no more claims to it.

    • Archie

The drawing is interesting, some kind of soft and at the same time dense, reminiscent of gum to taste, figuratively. Maybe it’s such a plastic picture or a taste of childhood, I don’t know. Perhaps again I will buy myself such an object.

  • Alexey

I also liked the picture. The bokeh is wonderful evenly round on the open and can be slightly sharpened. Covering up. Well, sharp and aperture. Replacement whale first.

  • Abundance

Compare it with the MC Helios-44M7; Helios-44m-4; Canon 50 / 1.8; Canon 85 / 1.8 (what I have) on the Canon 550D, draws in a completely different way. Drawing your own, boke twists very interesting. I looked at examples of photos on the internet, the potential is clearly not revealed. His hands are pros for the day.

  • Ivan

I shot with this lens on Zenit 312m. There he was almost perfect. When the Nikon 50D kit appeared, I was looking for other options for lenses, and I tried this Zenitar too. At first, it seemed normal with reduced contrast and focusing difficulty. But later I realized this is a great lens for leisurely artwork. The construct is of course controversial, with an application for a modernist style, it looks cool on a carcass.

  • Ivan

I will try to attach an image. I see here many are unhappy with him. I went to the balcony, clicked what I saw. These are far from his best shots, I reduced it in FS to 1MB, and I also have a habit of compensating for the AA filter with the "edge sharpness" option, although this is debatable.

  • Ilyas

I ordered a lens with kmz, no one knows how to block the pusher from him?
As for the quality, IMHO, now at kmz it turns out to do WELL only fishey, neither the zenitar 85, nor 50 / 1.2, nor gel40 does not shine with special quality

  • Sveta

DD! I read that the Zenithar 2/50 + adapter M42 is a shifter (this is for my samsung nx11), the site said, yes, there is a thread, but I can not screw it on the back. Maybe you need a transition ring? Has anyone come across?

    • KalekseyG

      I read it twice, I still don’t understand …………

  • Sveta

    is the Zenitar-M2s 50 mm f / 2 lens an upside-down lens? I'm trying to find out!

    • KalekseyG

You can flip any. Maybe it’s easier for you to find and use macro rings, otherwise he has a 46mm filter thread and needs an adapter with an external thread 46 and an internal 42 to attach a standard adapter to the carcass.

      • Sveta

There are no macro rings for the whale lens. It is unprofitable to change the camera.

  • Sveta

I did not find a macro ring with such a thread. I have a Samsung nx 11 camera, it's a mirrorless camera, the optics are very expensive on them and it's hard to find. Therefore, I bought the Zenitar-M2s 50 mm f / 2 MC and the adapter adapter m42. Macro rings are inserted between the camera and the lens. In my case, screw the adapter onto the camera, followed by the macro ring and then the lens. I understand that macro rings are needed for 42 mm, I met rings from 49 mm. Here, something like this, you need advice.

    • KalekseyG

not no no, the Soviet rings M42 from the zeniths and Co., they sell a lot. between lens and adapter

    • KalekseyG

and, accordingly, no longer a changeling, but simply a very small mdf

      • Sveta

Yes, I already understood that I’m not a changeling. Thanks for the advice, buy a macro ring at the zenith.

  • Alexey

The lens really looks cheap, but it’s worth a new penny. Now it is being sold by a whale with a Zenit-122k camera. Today I purchased along with the carcass at the Krasnogorsk plant, I will soon tell you about the quality, sensations

  • Sergei

I compared zenitar-m2s on my Olympus with Pentax-M 50 1: 2 and Helios-44-2, impressions are very good. Sharpness is significantly higher at aperture 1.8, bokeh is decent, not worse than on Helios, although not twisted. Aperture and focusing ring is more convenient than Helios. For focusing 180 ° it was enough for me both on Zenit-122k and on Olympus. I don't mind plastic, since I don't need extra weight. I think it's like with the Helios - it all depends on the instance. There is such a historical fact - the best cars on the Ford conveyor were made on Wednesday, you can guess why :).

    • Archie

Why, tell me, don’t languish ?!

  • anonym

    I have two such lenses

  • N

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/zenitarm2s250/page1 Examples of photographs taken with this lens. Unless, of course, the author did not deceive ..

  • Nick

Adapted quite easily to Nikon while maintaining infinity. Even a slight run was obtained. Of course, it was not without shamanism, but there was no need to get a tambourine. At the same time I dripped the grease so that there was no plastic irritating shorkanie.
The first frames did not disappoint. True, conclusions are too early to draw. We are waiting for the weather for tests on the open air.

  • Sergei

    I liked this lens, although I have Helios-44-2, Zenitar-M 50 mm F 1,7 and MS Zenitar-ME 50 mm F 1,7.
In the picture, it is noticeably sharper than Helios-44, and in general, in terms of sharpness, colors and contrast, it complies with modern requirements and is not inferior to Canon 50 / 1,8 standard fifty dollars (at least in crop).
Its main advantage is the price / quality ratio. The price in the secondary market is 1000-1500 rubles. in a good condition. Lightweight (therefore always in the default bag as a fast lens).
The main disadvantage is that the helicoid dubs in the cold. It is very difficult to shoot with it in winter - focusing is difficult, jerky. If you do not have a good manual focusing skill on a matte screen, then it is better to pay attention to AF Yongnuo (3000 rubles) or a used native AF fifty kopecks on your mount (3500-4500 rubles).
With manual focusing, a magnifying nozzle on the viewfinder eyepiece (magnification up to 1,6 times) is very helpful. From 1000 rubles on Ali-express.
I advise you to buy an adapter ring for 46/49 mm filters, since 46 mm filters are quite rare.

  • Antiquary

Today I received such a lens, but I had more than a couple of hundred out of manual glass in my hands. Frankly, I just wanted to try, because from Zenitars I have everything except this. I will not talk about the design, since it is certainly better in metal, but I was very surprised by the sharpness and smooth bokeh, and not by the wrong and twisted haphazardly from the Geliks. I will leave it for personal use on a mirrorless camera, it is most suitable for carrying around for every day, both in terms of weight and convenience, metal is not always needed in everyday life, rather the opposite is more profitable. The picture is juicy and more interesting than natural. Satisfied.

    • anonym

      Thank you.

  • Major Mahoney

Looks perfect on Canon. Sharpest of all Helios I've tried. In diffused lighting, it makes the same flowers perfectly. Filmed in the light of an ordinary chandelier in the evening - I admired. Lightweight, won't pull light cameras.
What plastic criticizes - people, you modern do not use lenses, or what? :-)
In short, of my stocks of old lenses, it is better only Zeiss gives a picture.

    • Archie

      Nifiga myself, I told myself.

  • Sergei

Your conclusion is the case if you pick up an old hackneyed lens. Personally, in 2014 I was able to buy the MC Zenitar-M2s brand new in the store. Despite the plastic case with a Chinese toy, it does not feel, it is assembled very high quality and without a single play. It’s just that the eye rejoices when you look at its crystal clear and so far without a single speck of dust lenses. For a lens for 1500 rubles, it is just super sharp. Example photo on f2.0 in weak artificial light:

    DSC-1637-Dx-O

    • Novel

How cute. People who order wheelsets in China because they cannot produce their own and are happy with “new lenses” that have been produced (like missiles) for decades without changes, they say something about “Chinese toys”, using in as an object for the photo, a Chinese plug, illuminated by the "weak artificial light" of a Chinese mercury lamp (well, with a domestic box at most).

      • 1Ds_mk3

Roman, your malice is understandable, but in fact the post is useless. Neither you nor I can do anything about it. Most of the CIS (except for the Baltics) is a pitiful sight and a raw material appendage of the West. Thanks to the former commies who changed their shoes in the air.

        • Novel

A post that it's time to open your eyes and not use terms like “Chinese toy”. The Chinese make autofocus lenses on their own from their own glass, and they also started by copying like a late scoop. The path of change begins with awareness, and not with nostalgic pseudo-greatness.

          • Sergei

For example, I use a purely Chinese YongNuo 35mm 1.8 lens, and I even like it better in picture quality than the Nikkor 35mm 1.8G DX, which is now just lying around idle. A Chinese toy for $ 100 removes better than the Japanese counterpart for $ 200. So China is now not at all the same China that it was a few years ago.

          • Sergei

And my phone is Chinese, for the third year it has been plowing like new, without a film on the screen.

  • Alexander

The assembly of the lens MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 is really flimsy, plastic, there is plastic. When you switch the aperture values, with a little effort, this diaphragm ring wedges, as if seizing. It is also quite difficult to focus, the focusing ring rotates tightly, with a certain creak, ripple, hence the sharpness to focus immediately, outright, it is not possible, only after several attempts ... But, all this is a matter of technique, skill, habit. Surprisingly, this is a plastic miracle, MC Zenitar-M2s 2/50 - showed excellent picture quality, and as a result, I want to shoot with this lens .... :) https://pp.userapi.com/c849420/v849420987/156ff2/scJF4s528jE.jpg

  • Dima TT

I was VERY surprised by the rather interesting picture that this plastic freak gives out. optically - one of the best shovel lenses

    • Eugene

I could not throw off the pictures, it was difficult to do ... the zenith was stopped, any helicopter has a picture.

  • Shapoval is the best

Look guys, glass is really good ... on the open it is sharp, just wow effect ..
