Auto Beroflex 1 review: 3.5 f = 135mm

Beroflex 135 / 3,5 is an old non-autofocus lens for film cameras with M42 mounting thread. The 'Auto' prefix symbolizes only the presence of an automatic blinking iris. The aperture can also be controlled manually as the lens has an 'A-M' switch.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

Auto Beroflex 1 Side View: 3.5 f = 135mm

Auto Beroflex 1 Side View: 3.5 f = 135mm

All Beroflex lenses that have been in my hands, for some reason, turned out to be of very low optical quality. The Auto Beroflex 1: 3.5 f = 135mm from this review has finally demonstrated normal image quality and proved that there are good Beroflex lenses.

Beroflex 135 / 3,5 - classic 135mm fix. He cannot boast of good aperturewhich is only f / 3.5. There is a huge number of 135-s aperture F / 2.8, which is 2/3 stops better. But at the same time for 135mm F / 3.5 - not so bad! Recall at least the fact that the legendary Soviet Jupiter-37A has the same parameters, while Jupiter and Beroflex 135 / 3,5 can be used already with F / 3.5.

This instance of Beroflex 135 / 3,5 has a white (they also say that the color is gray or metallic) body color. The lens is well assembled, it is pleasant to work with it, it is not modern Chinese plastic :). Beroflex 135 / 3,5 made in Japan, front filter diameter 52mm.

The focus ring is rubberized and rotates 270 degrees, which is pretty good. When focusing, the entire lens unit of the lens is linearly shifted, while the front lens does not rotate. MDF is 1.5 meters. It turned out to be quite convenient to focus. The number of aperture blades is only 6 pieces. The aperture closes down to f / 22. The lens has depth of field scale for F / 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 and an infrared shift mark. Beroflex 135 / 3,5 has a built-in hood, which I did not notice when shooting with this lens for two days :)

The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using a simple adapter M42-nikon. With a lensless adapter, you can focus within 8 meters. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression). Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - position 5 between 0 and 9. Used white balance: 'Shadow' and 'Cloudy'. The size of the photos has been reduced to 3 MP. Filmed using a trigger Commlite ComTrig T320umbrella and SB-910.

Conclusions:

Auto Beroflex 1: 3.5 f = 135mm is a good old prime that can serve as a portrait lens perfectly. The image quality is at a normal level for such a lens. In general, it is difficult to make a bad 135mm lens, and even with this aperture.

    jupiter or beroflex?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Jupiter, smaller MDF, smoother focuser, easy to any system through the shank, Yu-37 can be found with the MC, in my opinion the Yu-37 is sharper.

In addition, Daniof Berofleks set up his own hood and camera on the camera, so that it’s below Jupiter-37a. First time, education in Boreflex is more beautiful than Jupiter without MS.
Tsey ob'єktiv to finish not fouls, ale Jupiter-37a all the same, we will reduce.

I singled out the lenses separately, but thanks for the hood - when I shot and twisted it in my hands I did not notice it.

I had auto revuenon 135 2.8 of the second modification (not the one that Arkady had in the review) the design is full copy paste from this beroflex, and the duralumin hood also protruded .. the quality didn’t surprise me, the bokeh was like from the usual 18-105 to 105, the sharpness is also mediocre, and HA is noticeable. I think that u37 and u11 are the most tolerable 135s, despite the fact that there is a spread of quality and are made like an ax.

If from the Soviet, then yes, but if at all, then the Germans are more pleasant from 135-k.

The contrast gives a good one. I would like to understand from these pictures which ones without a flash.
