Nikon ED AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G IF Aspherical is a versatile super-zoom for Nikon FX full-frame cameras. Nikon has two similar lenses:

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D - the first version of the lens. Produced in Japan and China from 1998 to 2003. The lens has an aperture control ring. Weighs 560 grams.
  2. Nikon ED AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G IF Aspherical is the second version of the lens. Produced in Japan and Thailand from 2003 to 2005.

The second version of the lens turned out to be very compact... This is a real tourist lens - it doesn't take up much space in the case, weighs only 360 grams and gives the commonly used focal length range of 28 to 200mm. Nowadays, you won't be surprised at the 50x zoom in point-and-shoot cameras, but for APS cameras it is very difficult to make a zoom lens with a large zoom factor. This is due to the fact that APS (Full Format) cameras use a large sensor.

Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G, along with its rather large multiplicity of 7.1X, fits in a fairly compact package. The lens owes its small size to the optical scheme, which includes as many as 3 ED elements and 3 aspherical elements that allow you to create compact lenses. For example, the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR uses 2 ED and 3 ASP elements.

There is a lens focus stop 'LIMIT / FULL'. In the 'Limit' position, focusing is available from infinity to 60 cm. The focusing speed in the 'Limit' mode is below average, and in the 'Full' position, the focusing speed becomes very slow. In 'Full' mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 60 degrees.

Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G has internal focusing, the front lens does not rotate when zooming. The lens has 28mm zoom lock - Button 'Lock 28' allows you to get rid of spontaneous lengthening of the 'trunk' of the lens. The zoom and focus ring are rubberized. The lens has plastic mountbut overall the assembly is not bad.

The lens suffers from strong vignetting at F / 3.5 @ 28mm, as well as distortion over the entire range of focal lengths. In the center, sharpness is normal over the entire range of focal lengths, but not everything is so good around the edges. The lens well tolerates back and side light. The image quality turned out to be slightly worse than expected, but do not require anything more from such a zoom lens.

Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using protective filter Hoya HMC UV (c) 62mm. On-camera JPEG L ('optimal quality' compression). Filmed in Auto ISO mode, with shutter speed no longer than 1/200 second. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - position 5 between 0 and 9. Used white balance: 'Auto', 'Shadow' and 'Cloudy'. The size of the photos was reduced to 3 MP.

Conclusions

Nikon has not updated the Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G for a long time. The lens was not destined to get a built-in focus motor and image stabilizer. The continuation of the lens can be considered Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VRthat came out in 2010. In the period between 2005-2010, Nikon did not produce superzoom of this class.

I do not recommend this lens due to its slow focusing - otherwise the Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G can do quite well. super-budget full-time lens for FX cameras, especially if you know how to use the Auto ISO function. On Nikon DX cameras, this lens loses its versatility due to the loss of wide-angle (ERF will be 42-300mm). The analogue of this lens for Nikon DX cameras can be considered Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6G IF-ED, EGF which is 27-202.5 mm (in fact, the same 28-200 mm).

Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G is intended only for simple photo tasks, so expect, and even more so, demand a lot from Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G - it’s just not worth it. If you really want to buy a lens with similar focal lengths, I advise you to add a little money and take his older brother - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D.

Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G is a unique lens, it has no aperture ring (G type) and there is no focus motor (AF type). Simultaneously 'G'and'AF'is very rare with lenses. On the sidelines they call it "Not a mother or a father, but a visiting fellow."

          Be careful. In the Nikon 18-55 review, the conversion to EGF was simply not performed. Indeed, 18mm is a wide angle on Nikon DX cameras.         The actual focal length is written on the lenses, depending on the crop factor, the angle of view changes, so 18-135 on the crop will have the same angle of view as 28-200 (1,5 * 18-1,5 * 135) on the FF. That is, even on lenses designed for DX carcasses, real focal ones are written, and how it will look on the camera needs to be calculated by yourself.

    I got this lens by accident (I bought it with the D200 included). I read Arkady's review about Nikon AF 28-200mm F / 3.5-5.6G and decided to get rid of it right away. However, after testing, I decided to leave it just for travel. With such dimensions and weight, and a ridiculous cost of $ 100. at the moment it is out of competition in the price-quality section among travel zooms. Personally, I didn’t like the protruding trunk and the fact that the “zoom” ring had to be turned counterclockwise unusually, unlike most modern Nikon lenses. And with a focusing speed, everything is GOOD, he checked it on reportage shooting on cameras D200, D90 and D7100.
