Review Nikon 1 J1

The Nikon 1 J1 camera and several lenses for it were provided by Oneschuk Vadim for review.

Review Nikon 1 J1

Review of the Nikon 1 J1. It looks like Nikon J1 without a lens (body)

The Nikon 1 J1 is one of six (2013) 'Nikon 1' interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras. The Nikon 1 J1 has a 'Nikon 1' mount and, for the first time since 1960, Nikon has released a range of non 'Nikon F' mount cameras. On sale you can find both Nikon 1 J1 Body (a camera without a lens) and Nikon 1 J1 kit (a camera with one or more lenses). The Nikon 1 J1 has a simple menu that anyone can understand. Shooting with a camera in automatic mode is very, very easy. But for professional use, the Nikon J1 is no good.

Nikon 1 J1 fixed lens 10mm 1: 2.8 1 Nikkor

Nikon 1 J1 with fixed lens 10mm 1: 2.8 1 Nikkor. The camera can be of different colors.

Lenses

Fix Lenses:

  1. Nikon 1 NIKKOR 10mm f / 2.8 (black and silver)
  2. Nikon 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f / 2.8 (only black)
  3. Nikon 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f / 1.8 (black, silver, white)
  4. Nikon 1 NIKKOR 32mm f / 1.2 (black, silver)

Zoom lenses

  1. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 6.7-13mm f / 3.5-5.6 (black and silver)
  2. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f / 3.5-5.6 (8 color options)
  3. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f / 3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM (6 color options)
  4. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f / 4-5.6 (5 color options)
  5. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f / 4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM (only black)
  6. Nikon 1 NIKKOR 11-27.5mm f / 3.5-5.6 (6 color options)
  7. Nikon 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f / 3.5-5.6 (black, silver, white)
  8. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f / 3.8-5.6 (8 color options)
  9. Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6 N (only black)

For myself, I would take a bunch of universal lens Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f / 4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM and portrait lens Nikon 1 NIKKOR 32mm f / 1.2, however, such a set will be quite expensive :). It's very funny that Nikon released Nikon 1 NIKKOR 32mm f / 1.2but still not updated to the autofocus version of the old Nikon 50mm 1: 1.2 AI-S.

There is a special list of Nikon FX, DX lenses that you can easily use on your Nikon 1 J1 camera using the FT1 adapter. More details about this issue can be found in the section on Nikon CX Lenses.

Nikon 1 J1 has a very short working length, which allows you to use many manual lenses from rangefinder cameras. But here's the trouble - Nikon 1 J1 the possibility of measurement is reduced exposure with old uncoupled optics. You can shoot with manual lenses only in 'M' mode. Modes P, A, S, M must be selected in the camera menu 'Exposure mode'.

Matrix

Nikon 1 J1 is a tiny system camera with crop factor 2.7X. This means that matrix size Nikon 1 J1 7,3 times smallerthan any film (135th film) or any full-format camera. Matrix size plays a huge role in the construction of the image. Nikon 1 J1 sensor with a nail - 13.2 x 8.8 mm... On such a small (in physical size) matrix, 10.0 megapixels were placed. Most likely, marketing played here, because anything less than 10 MP, nowadays already causes a malicious grin. In this way, the camera can take pictures of 3,872 x 2,592 pixels (exactly 10 pixels). 036 MP - this is quite enough for amateur tasks, for example, with 224 MP you can print A10 images without any problems. In order not to bother about the number of pixels, I advise you to look at the article ' Battle of Megapixels '.

By the way, 3 more cameras of the Nikon 1 series use the same CMOS sensor - this is Nikon 1 J2Nikon 1 S1Nikon 1 V1. Nikon 1 J1 can use ISO from 100 to 3.200 and expand to a value of 6.400 (ISO HI 1). The camera has three auto ISO modes:

  1. A3200 - Uses ISO 100-3200 range
  2. A800 - Uses ISO 100-800 range
  3. A400 - Uses ISO 100-400 range

True, automatic ISO selects not the most successful excerptsmost likely focusing on the focal length of the lens (Golden Rule) So, the camera often gave me a shutter speed of 1/30 s, while I could take a picture of stationary objects without problems, but people were already blurry for 1/30 of a second.

The lower the ISO level, the less noise you can get in photos. Nikon J1 is comparable in noise level to old SLR cameras Nikon D40, D70s (noise starting from ISO 200). A miracle did not happen, and at ISO 3200 I get a good image, but the noise reduction function removes image detail. Here original shot at ISO 3200, in the photo due to the noise reduction algorithm, the cat's face became similar to Vrubel paintings. But in any case, the picture from the Nikon 1 J1 looks decent.

Nikon 1 J1, unlike mirrorless cameras Sony Nex and many others, does not have a mechanical shutter. During shooting, there is no excess noise from the movement of the shutter shutters. Also, the iris control mechanism is built into the Nikon 1 lenses themselves and is very quiet. Focusing with Nikon 1 lenses is also very, very quiet.

Very important points in the Nikon 1 J1 camera:

  • the camera can use an ultra-fast shutter speed equal to 1 / 16,000 seconds. Among Nikon SLR cameras, only Nikon D1x, D1h, D1.
  • the camera has neither optical nor electronic viewfinder. You can only zoom in using the camera display. A camera display 3-inch, TFT LCD type at 460.000 points.
  • the camera has a built-in flash that shoots (rises) upward when you press the corresponding button. By the way, the flash works pretty well.
  • There is also an auxiliary focus auto focus light, which lights up in green.
  • remotely control the camera using a cheap remote control ML-L3.
  • the camera has a USB output and mini type C HDMI.
  • camera supports memory cards SD, SDHC, SDXC (and UHS-I).
  • The battery is powerful enough, I had about 500 photos per charge.
  • the camera has a sleep mode, the time after which the camera goes into this mode is configured.
  • the camera has features that enhance the picture: Active D-lightning, noise reduction at high ISO and slow shutter speeds.
  • the camera can be connected to an outlet using an EP-5C cable. For the camera, there is even a special GR-N2000 handle for a comfortable grip (not to be confused with the booster).
  • the camera has an interesting 'Motion Snapshot' mode, during which a short video is recorded at a high frame rate per second and a photo is taken in parallel.

Camera performance

Nikon 1 J1 weighs a little less than 300 grams, a camera with a small lens can even be placed in a jacket pocket. The camera body is made of aluminum alloy.

Sample photo on Nikon 1 J1

And now the fun part is this baby can take off photo at a speed of 60 (sixty) frames per second! This is an outrageous indicator. At what you can shoot 60 fps with any parameters, even RAW + JPEG. However, a serious drawback of such super-fast shooting is the very small frame buffer. The processor is responsible for image processing EXPEED 3, the same as Nikon D800, D7100.

Photo at Nikon 1 J1

Photo at Nikon 1 J1

Buffer:

  • 12 frames in the shooting mode 'Continuous -> Electronic (BC)' with a frequency of 30 or 60 fps, moreover, with any quality settings, the buffer is always exactly 12 frames. This means that only 60/1 of a second can be shot at 5fps. At 10 fps, the buffer becomes 13 frames.
  • 17 frames in JPEG, L, Fine. With this function ADL, noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at long exposure, auto ISO - off.
  • 23 frames in JPEG, L, Fine mode, if you also switch to M mode in addition.
  • 83 frame in JPEG, S, Basic mode and all disabled functions
  • 14 frames in JPEG, L, Fine mode or in RAW mode or in RAW + JPEG mode with all additional functions enabled

Frame buffer turned out to be quite capacious, it's a pity you can't put 83 frames at 60 fps. In other modes, the camera can shoot at speeds up to 5 fps. And in the 'Electronic (BC)' mode, you can set 10 or 30, or 60 c.s. RAW files have 12-bit color depth and weigh an average of 10 MB. JPEG L Fine weighs an average of 5 MB.

Focusing

Focusing on the Nikon 1 J1 is fast, several modes are available. You can select one focus point and know exactly where the camera focuses. In manual focus mode, you can enlarge any area of the image, but only the increase is not available when working with manual optics.

Nikon 1 J1 uses a hybrid focus method. Focusing in video mode is also fast, so the Nikon 1 J1 outperforms its mirror counterparts, where there is a serious problem with focusing speed. Typically, SLR cameras for video use contrast focusing, which is why focusing is very, very slow, even on very expensive cameras.

Nikon 1 J1 rear view

Video

A very strong point of the Nikon 1 J1 is the video. The camera can take Full HD at 60 frames per second... MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920 × 1080, AAC 48000Hz stereo 128Kbps codec in MOV container. You can also shoot at 1920 × 1080 30p or 1280 × 720 60p.

And the camera has two slow motion modes:

  •     640 x 240 400 frames per second
  •     320 x 120 1.200 frames per second

Just think - 1200 frames per second, while you can make really interesting videos. The movie itself is played at standard 30 frames per second, and it turns out 40-fold slowdown. The camera also has stereo microphone to record video. In aperture priority mode, aperture changes are available during movie shooting. In M mode, you can control and shutter speed and diaphragm, such a complete control of these two parameters is only in the very expensive CZK Nikon D4, D800,D800E.

Lenses

I used two native lenses - 1 Nikkor 10mm 1: 2.8 RF Aspherical и 1 Nikkor 10-30mm 1: 3.5-5.6 VR IF Aspherical... The lenses are very small, compact, with internal focusing. Focusing itself is fast. The lenses do not have a diaphragm control ring, focusing ring, focusing distance scale, depth of field scale, they have nothing at all :). The lens aperture is controlled by a mechanism built into the lens itself. The number of aperture blades in lenses is 7 pieces. In the removed position, the lens aperture is completely closed. The MDF lenses are 20cm and use a tiny 40.5mm filter. You can buy a lens hood for the lenses.

1 Nikkor 10-30mm 1: 3.5-5.6 VR - stock lens with stabilization. Has an interesting zoom latch. In the inactive position, the lens trunk is hidden. You need to zoom manually, like with any lens from a SLR camera. The zoom button can automatically turn on the camera. The lens has a metal mount. Weighs 1 Nikkor 10-30mm 1: 3.5-5.6 VR 115 g. Minimum aperture is f / 16. The lens can catch glare in backlighting.

1 Nikkor 10mm 1: 2.8 RF Aspherical - fast wide-angle lens. Weighs 77 grams. Instead of a focus ring, it has a 'snag'. The minimum aperture is F / 11. The mount is metal.

There are no serious comments on image quality for lenses. I do not plan a detailed review of these lenses, since there is practically nothing to view. Examples of photographs on lenses:

Photo parameters: on-camera JPEG L Fine without processing. All shot in Picture Control mode SD and VI. Used white balance: 'Auto', 'Shadow', 'Direct Sunlight' and 'Cloudy Sky'. Photos have been resized to 2048px by 1363px Q = 85% (about 3MP). More photos from Nikon 1 J1 can be found in Jupiter-8 2/50 review.

Personal experience

I was extremely uncomfortable using the Nikon 1 J1. This primarily refers to the fact that the lenses do not have a manual focus ring. For any change in the settings you need to climb and poke around in the menu. But for camera enthusiasts such a camera is of great interest.

Another weird stuff I found in the camera:

  • The battery cover does not snap into place.
  • camera and lenses are made in China - oh, this Nikon :).
  • There are 4 modes in total on the shooting mode dial. What's the rest of the 75% wheel for? It was possible to take out the modes P, A, S, M, or 'landscape', 'night portrait', etc.
  • I still don't understand how the Smart Photo Selector works.
  • Who needs Motion Snapshot?
  • the camera does not have a very interesting HDR function for fans.
  • there is no possibility to create panoramas, a trifle, but unpleasant.
  • on the official website indicated that camera performance is 600 megapixels per second. But the camera can’t even take 1 second at a speed of 60 fps to get the claimed number of 600 MP / s. In fact, the camera takes 12/60 = 0,2, that is 1/5 of a second :)

If I had before me the choice of buying a camera with interchangeable lenses, then I would look towards the Sony Nex cameras. Well, if the Sony Nex is quite expensive, then instead of the Nikon J1 I would take a simple but more bulky SLR camera Nikon D3100 with a whale lens. Of course, this is just my experience and my desires.

Conclusions:

Nikon 1 J1 is one of the simplest cameras in the Nikon 1 line. The camera is very small and powerful: here you can shoot 60 photos in one second, and Full HD 60i (with slow motion), and a large frame buffer, and many other pleasant things. Such a camera is suitable for those who do not want to mess with large DSLRs, but want to get a fairly high-quality image and video.

In 2018, all Nikon 1 cameras were added to the archived products section of Nikon official websites.

  • Alexander

The camera is interesting, of course, that it will be difficult to shoot weddings in difficult conditions. But to consider it as a camera for everyday shooting, for traveling, where size / weight plays a huge role, I think this will be a good option.

  • Evgeny Belyaev

Nikon is on top! instead of turning to face the consumer (like micro 4/3, nex for example), they castrated and mirrorless)))
the banal lack of scale with the manual is already worth a lot.

in vain such an approach in the struggle for the buyer's money - a suitable autofocus proprietary lens will buy anyway (if it really is suitable). and if the native optics of the UG, then even deliberate self-harm cannot be driven onto it ...

    AMENDMENTS TO THE ARTICLE

Firstly, in 2014, Nikon 1 is considered the fastest mirrorless camera in the world (!) (It was given the number “first” not because of the matrix size of 1 ″). Thanks to two hundred points of contrast-phase focusing on the matrix, it is able to focus at a speed of 0,05 seconds! I own a Nikon 1 V3 camera myself, and I almost never press the shutter button halfway to aim, but immediately press down on it completely and get a finished shot even in low light conditions! Plus, this camera has very fast optics (Nikkor 32mm f / 1.2) and an unrealistic 810mm zoom lens with a built-in stabilizer! And it's all made entirely of metal, including the camera itself!
    ● Very powerful percent. Expeed 4A (giving output image quality comparable to APS-C cameras);
    ● Lack of an optical AA filter on the matrix (giving a noticeable increase in the sharpness of the picture, as if you “magically” turned the 18-Mpix matrix into 22-Mpix without increasing its noise, or applied sharping.);
    ● Rate of 10-60 photos per second with a buffer for 40 shots in RAW + Jpeg;
    ● Maximum shutter speed - 1 / 16000s;
    ● Recording Full HD video 1920x1080p with a frequency of 60 fps;
    ● Recording high-speed video with a frequency of 120 to 1200 fps;
    ● Hand-held multi-frame noise reduction without “shaking”;
    ● Handheld HDR without shake;
    ● Dynamic range extender;
    ● 360 degree panorama with hands;
    ● The choice between a mechanical and electronic shutter;
    ● Rotatable touch display;
    ● Indescribable tactile sensations from the metal case and camera buttons.

And remember! In 2014, image quality is no longer responsible for the size of the light receiver, but the processor that creates the color image.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Where are the amendments? And if I have image quality on board the i7, look between the memory bars?

  • Basil

I agree with Pasha. Arkash! What does your memory stick have to do with it? I've specially checked the lens 10mm - and so, instead of a focusing ring, it has a Metal 'snag', and not a plastic one as in your review, but you don't make any corrections

    • Arkady Shapoval

Fixed. I will always correct shortcomings in the reviews, if any. Pasha simply wrote his own impressions of the Nikon 1 V3 on his own, signed it as “CORRECTIONS TO THE ARTICLE”. As for the memory sticks - we were talking about the processor, Pasha thus wants to justify the small size of the sensor, indicating that the processor nowadays plays a decisive role in creating an image.

  • Basil

Thanks. And those who write their own "amendments" - as the ultimate truth - should be ashamed, because the site has a decent amount of work, moreover, only one person. By the way, are there any assistants, or is it really all alone?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Mostly only I work on the site.

  • Maksim

Tell me if anyone knows a way to get around the maximum exposure limit of 120 seconds (“bulb” mode). For astrophotography I really want :)

  • Nikon Canonus

I am a passionate photographer when there is time, of course. xD
For many years I have been with me Canon SX210, I bought it as soon as I came out (I took it for this photo and trips through the valleys and hills :-). It was convenient to carry with you, a good zoom, an alt. firmware…
And in his spare time, in a good mood, he photographed with Kiev 19M, Nikon EM and Canon EOS 500N. All film, something mine, something friends. Nikon is certainly good!
But, Canon’s digital zoom ceased to please me with the quality of the photo, so I decided to buy a mirrorless camera, compact, so I could carry it with me in a bag.
A little upset by the crop in 2.7 on Nikon, I decided to take the Sony a5100, but it's without a shoe ... Hmm, I thought, a6000 is something, this is a thing! But somehow it is expensive for an amateur, especially since the formation of a new, my, family was still ahead of me ... In general, I found NEX5RK, but I also went bankrupt with it. I was already thinking about taking a Canon EOS M, when I was suddenly offered a little yuzanny Nikon V1 for ridiculous money. And I took it without hesitation.
Of course, I still dream about the crop at night, but it also has a plus - the ability to install C-mount lenses, but they are still fast. And so, you can safely use any optics, through the acc. an adapter, and a portrait lens of norms and a telezoom is good. That's what I need.
The second thing I thought, I have a full frame, well, yes, film, but what kind of film. I still have to figure out the intricacies of the film, and there it is already possible to take a "mature" TsZK, Nikon D600 or Canon EOS 6D, and in the case of mirrorless cameras - Sony Alpha A7 and A7R (which I am more inclined to).
And there is no difference for me, ff, he is in africa ff, and crop is a crop. If the lens is under ff, then you need to use it on it, and not tulle it anywhere through cheap Chinese adapters. But I myself am a sinner, tulu ff on crop :-)

What can I advise a beginner amateur photographer who needs a compact, but with the maximum chips and buns from the CZK (DSLRs), to take Micro 4/3, namely Olympus. It has 2 crop (average between Sony, Fuji, where the crop is 1.5, Canon with 1.6 and, between Nikon, with their 2,7) A large selection of optics, accessories and other good ...

If you don’t care about finances, take a full-frame mirrorless mirror or a central dial brake or whatever you want, then take it. :-)

And now about the Nikon V1.
With fast lenses, with the right settings, he still can and does great photos!
Someone (and I) like his film-like colors (that’s what they called his color. Gamut on foreign forums).
You can set any curve, color values as you like through picture control, or you can download ready-made (including parameters from D2X) and install it on the camera.
It's fast, good photos and videos, mic output, accessory port, manual DSLR settings hidden in the menu. The menu is fast, with the function of remembering the last action.
What is missing is the wheels for a quick choice of modes (or rather it is, there are at least modes on it), as well as the Live View function (which, sometime, with breaking the firmware, will be added sometime).
But, those who want to photograph thoughtfully, set all shooting parameters themselves, Live View will not come in handy. For those who want to get rich, cool pictures in auto-mode - welcome, Nikon 1 system is truly one of the best auto modes and fast AF.

What, in essence, is it, Nikon V1 - a mixture of a soap dish and a CZK?
In the crooked hands and the best ones, the camera will be a soap box, and in capable hands the soap will become your quintessence, that fifth element, that great creative force that God has endowed you with.

Yes, I had to tinker with the camera menu at first, but now, sleight of hand has evolved to automation.
And yes, it’s not difficult for me to switch from Nikon 1 to film, I’m starting to figure out what’s what, how much to put on, what and where to turn in advance when I compose a scene, and not click at random and take the same photo a hundred times ... and it makes me happy.

So, if money does matter, and you get a chance to get a Nikon V1 for “ridiculous money”, you are new to the world of photography and you don't have a bunch of DX or APS-C crop optics at home, you can take it.
With the adapter, you can put owls. manual optics and get beautiful pictures at the exit. Oh yes, the adapter is better not to take a simple Chinese, but with an AF and AE confirmation chip. Also, there are rumors about the start of production by the Metabone adapter with a focal reducer, i.e. crop will be as if smaller.

    Peace to you!

How to find the resolution in the center-edge lines of the Nikon 1 NIKKOR 10mm f / 2.8?

    • Ruslan

The nikonimaging website has it all. Well, in the photo zone there is a test.

  • Alexey

    Hello.
I am a simple user of this camera. I bought it at a discount two years ago. Fotik is now more annoying than happy. 60 percent of the photos are blurry. I also bought a holder, and I try not to breathe when I take a picture. And when you ask to take a picture of me, some passerby, the pictures will be blurry anyway.
Guys help with tips, the settings in the menu are the same as at the end of the article: maybe the stabilizer does not rattle, can it somehow take a picture in manual mode?

    • BB

Is there a stabilizer in your lens?
In general, read on this site about otkrzhku, aperture, iso, understand the basic terms and their relationship, then you will understand why the photos are blurry.
And there are actually two options: either incorrect focusing or shutter speed too slow for a given focal length.

  • Alexey

I take a picture on the machine. The lens is native, the initial 3.5-5.6 10-30mm. Maybe tell me?

    • anonym

Try shooting in different AF settings.

      • Alexey

Yes, indeed in AF mode, pictures are better and less grease. THX.

    • just Vanya

If possible, try on another native lens. Perhaps the stabilizer is lying. Some software inconsistencies are possible. It can even be assumed that the matrix is dangling (they took it for a promotion!)
It is possible with a pancake of 10 mm, there is no stub.
It is possible with any manual (Soviet for example). Set the manual mode, in normal light set to 200 or even 400 (for a short shutter speed). A lens, preferably cut (type Zenitar-M2 inexpensive, but good). Or tighten the diaphragm for at least 4 (on the G-44 or G-103). But follow the shutter speed!
After that, at least, it will become clear who is parting - a lens or a carcass (software, hardware).
If the grease does not disappear on the manual and the shutter speed (min. 1/200), try updating the software.
      ps
if you are a beginner, then really read the principles and technologies of photography - it will be easier and more understandable.
      ps
if you conduct experiments write - interesting. for 4 years Nick B1 for the first time I read about this.

      • Alexey

Thanks for the tip. The firmware in the carcass is the last. But it won’t work with lenses: I’m not financially ready to invest in this camera. I really wanted to take a picture on the machine, as my wife likes to take a picture, but it’s not fate.

        • just Vanya

The 10-30 lens is the shittiest of the entire Nikon 1 line.

    • Alexey

not just shitty but also with problems in the design, there was a recall on it.

  • Tatyana

For two years now I have Nikon j1. Every time I open more and more new things in it, I improve the quality of photos, but I still haven’t managed one: the lack of sharpness in the photos. Constantly it is necessary to add sharpness to every photo in Photoshop. Even the settings in the fotik menu with the addition of sharpness did not help. Probably the case in the lens 10-30? I’m taking a 30-110 lens from a friend and I was amazed that he had sharpness on top! Probably you need to change the lens to 30-110? Or can I somehow improve the sharpness on my own 10-30 lens? Tell me please!

Have you tried to cover the diaphragm?

      • Tatyana

Yes. It's still fuzzy. For example, landscape, urban views are not clearly obtained.

        • BB

Maybe your lens is defective (specifically, your copy of this caught)? If possible, try another instance.
I do not believe that the whale lens is very blurry.

          • Tatyana

Here is an example photo with a cat with a 10-30 lens.

            • BB

there is probably not enough light here, maybe "blur"?

              • Tatyana

It was afternoon, the room was lit by two fairly lighted windows. I bow to the fact that this lens is dark and not clear enough.

            • Alexey

you have ISO 640 there. Nikon lathers already at ISO 200 - the matrix is lousy, it works shumodav smearing the picture.

            • BB

I looked from a PC, in my opinion my Canon SX150 'soap dish' produces even slightly better quality ...

              • Alexey

I compared Nikon 1 with a 6MP soap dish. soap dish gave the same level of sharpness and much better color)))

              • Paul

Well, what are you writing, SX150 ... I gave this to the child to get acquainted with the photo, and he said that it was a shitty shot.

              • BB

In normal light, or with a flash, the SX 150 shoots pretty well, you just need straight arms. And you can also use Raw ...

    • Alexey

itself 10-30 sharp only in the center. just behind the center is soap.
The 10mm fix is exactly the same. there is simply no normal optics for Nikon 1.
in your case, if the soap is in the center too, then try another lens, 10-30 often break and they have a lot of quality problems.

      • Tatyana

I threw a photo with a cat above, as an example of a photo from 10-30.
I have a little thought to buy an 18,5mm lens. Or was it an exchange for soap?
And then in the room people without a flash turn out terribly muddy and dark. So I think, I think, is it worth changing the lens?

        • Alexey

from personal experience - you will not be able to get a beautiful color on nikon 1 due to the poor Aptim matrix. You will not be able to get sharp, detailed photos on Nikon 1 as there are no high-quality, high-resolution lenses for this system. and there is no bokeh either - due to the lack of high-aperture lenses with a beautiful pattern.
IMHO, do not invest in it. the horse is dead, it's just a fact. change the horse. )))
take a sample somewhere olympus mikru or sony rexa of any version, or at least kenon 7.
Get an order of magnitude better picture with the same dimensions.

          • Tatyana

Thank you very much! I will try different cameras. I thought about Canon 1100 D. But it seems to me that he is only a little higher than my Nikon.

            • Ivan

He's about 1100 times better than this Nikon.

            • Alexey

Canon 1100 D is many times better than Nikon 1.
this is a different level of quality.

          • Victor

Enough to carry nonsense, everything is fine with n1 with detail and color.

          • Paul

On a 10 mm pancake, there are quite sharp photos with normal colors and the correct exposure.
ISO at 100, shoot in RAW, aperture priority at 4.

  • Graf

    Nikon 1 J1 - 18,5mm.

    • Alexey

well yes. it also happened to me, that's why I sold it after 1.5 years of torment.
no halftones, the picture is gray, the color is "rough", oversaturated.
Sonya Rex, Kenon 7 with a matrix of 1 inch give a much more interesting picture. IMHO.

      • Victor

Alexey, Sergey or whatever you like, shorter than nik79 with a photographer, it’s enough to carry nonsense about noises at minimal, unsharp lenses, bad colors and the like. I have a unit and get excellent sharp pictures with sufficient DD and beautiful colors from it. If your little hands are imprisoned for another it’s only your problems and more than a draw.
You managed to spoil not only in many topics on the photo but also in the comments to the reviews here, not forgetting to publicize your pathetic blogging along the way. I would have prescribed a permanent ban in the place of Arkady if such a technical possibility existed.

Tell me, which lens to choose for nikon 1 j1, for the subject, of the possible lenses for it!?

  • Larissa

Good day! Thanks for the detailed article. I have Nikon 1 J1 since 2012. I rent a lot. Although it has already been in warranty repair twice, it’s not possible to change it, but in truth I don’t really want to. Compact, convenient, good quality image. It is possible to purchase a lens for a very inexpensive lens Nikon 35-70mm f / 3.3-4.5 AF Nikkor with a Nikon F lens mount, advise me if I need to buy an adapter, Nikon F adapter - Nikon 1 and if I need to do firmware for this. Thanks for the answer.

    • Yarkiya

An adapter is naturally needed, no firmware.

Who needs Motion Snapshot? - can leave it on and let it take off if a lover appears or a thief while you are not at home)))

  • Paul

The camera is not as bad as some describe it. If you use a 10 mm flat pancake, its size is very small, it is convenient to carry it even in a small bag, the camera takes good pictures taking into account the small matrix, if you set the ISO to either 100 or a car within 100-400, it’s better to shoot in RAW, Pictures can be tightened. The video shoots in my opinion is very good, of course it is not 4K, but Full HD 1080i / 60fps or 1080p / 30fps shoots very well, in addition there is shooting at 400 and 1200 fps in a lower resolution.
10 megapixels is just that value which still does not strongly soap on such a small matrix, but is already acceptable by resolution.
I was very pleased with the correct tonal balance and metering, I did not find any serious comments.

PS Why compare it with crop type Nikon D3100, these are cameras of at least different sizes and purposes. Among digital SLR cameras, there are not so many cameras that can give an artistic picture, these are Nikon D3S, Nikon D700, Canon 5D (first), Canon EOS 1DS, the rest is all marketing or reportage.

  • Paul

I can say with confidence that this camera shoots better than the Nikon P7700, Nikon P7100, Canon G12, Canon G15, Canon SX150, Canon A610, 620, 630, 570IS, Olympus 5050, Olympus 8080. All these soap dishes I used and cost some By the way, it is much higher on the second-hand market.
I think I can argue with some unsuccessful SLRs like the Canon 20D-40D for correct metering, color reproduction and JPEG images.

  • Maksim

As the owner of the Nikon 1 (S2) system, I will add that all the slander about quality, color rendering, “soapiness”, “noise” and other horrors are nothing more than talk. A great system for every day that you can carry with you at all times. JPEG sane, RAW is absolutely working for all sorts of "stretching".
The system is suitable for both a completely incomprehensible amateur and an advanced one - at least with a second camera, at least with a video camera.
I also have D200, D5100 - there is something to compare with.

  • Graf

about the sharpness. here is a photo on Nkon1 J 1 (of course, the lens is NOT 10-30)
