Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical

This is a short review, since Radozhiv already has a review of the first version of the lens - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical.

First version Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical и second version Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical (from this review) differ only in the details.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical

Very often the first and second versions are called 'VR I' and 'VR II' - but this is a mistake. The designations 'VR I' and 'VR II' imply different stabilization performance. In fact lens stabilizer is the same... And lenses are correctly designated 'G' and 'GII'. This trick is used by marketers to sell Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6 more expensiveGII, telling, supposedly his stabilization system has been improved :(,

The visual difference between the two versions of Nikon 18-200mm

The visual difference between the two versions of Nikon 18-200mm

The differences between the two lenses are as follows:

  1. Different name. The second version has the designation 'GII' instead of 'G' in its name. Also, the 'DX SWM VR ED IF Aspherical' lettering box is located on different parts of the lens. Serial number labels are also found in various places.
  2. Availability zoom lock for the 'GII' version. The new 'Lock' button allows you to lock the zoom position at 18mm focal length. The lens from this review is fairly new, and therefore its trunk does not spontaneously protrude. If, over time, the trunk begins to live its own life, then the 'Lock' button will be quite in demand.
  3. Different color of the 'VR' lettering - the first version has an inscription red, the second version has - golden.
  4. First Lenses 1: 3.5-5.6G produced in Japan, approximately from 2005 to 2006. From 2006 to 2009, production moved to Thailand. All Lenses 1: 3.5-5.6GII produced only in Thailand. I have seen cases where Japanese 18-200 lenses were sold 2 times more expensive than Thai. I think that it is not worth overpaying for the old Japanese version, the new Thai lenses have exactly the same build quality.
  5. Version 1: 3.5-5.6G was released from November 2005 to July 2009. The 'GII' version is released from July 2009 to the present day (at least until autumn 2016).
  6. The versions have a slightly different case design. First of all, I select a narrower zoom ring in 1: 3.5-5.6GII.
  7. Most likely version 1: 3.5-5.6GII received an updated enlightenment of its optics.

Everything else about lenses is completely identical. What a bunch of obscure abbreviations (DX, AF-S, G, ED, SWM, VR, IF, Aspherical) mean can be found in the section on decoding of Nikon lens designations.

On-camera JPEG L Fine. Long exposure noise reduction and high ISO noise reduction were turned off. Everything was shot in N (Neutral) Picture Control. Was used white balance: 'Auto', 'Shadow', 'Sunny'. Photos have been scaled down to 1600px by 1064px (roughly 2MP).

Conclusions

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical is a good versatile lens. Versions 1: 3.5-5.6G and 1: 3.5-5.6GII practically do not differ.

I select for Kenon 650D mіzh 18-135 stm that 18-200. Someone please? Video does not save.

    • anonym

18-135 STM, its optics have been redesigned, plus with a smaller zoom the quality is slightly better, and also with all STM lenses the performance is more reliable.

"In conjunction with the D50, the lens suffers from back focus, so I had to edit the photo a little."
Arkady, please explain what is the reason for this phenomenon? As I understand it, speech is not in an unadjusted camera or lens, but in a bunch. Or is it all simple?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t know the exact reason, I suppose there are problems with the old D50 and its focusing system. Most offensively, because of the small display, the problem was found only on the computer, and Nata and I spent our time shooting at d50.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

Boring lens. Periodically I regret that I bought it. But sometimes it helps out with its 200 mm. Ordinary amateur reporting. Better to buy something like Nikon's 180 / 2.8D. There is aperture and bokeh.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It's stupid to talk about superzoom for crop and about 180 2.8 :)

  • Alexey

The next bout of regret, just sell it))) I am sure there are many people who will be more fun with it))

  • Anatoly

Arkady, I have long wanted to ask one offtopic question that you seem to have not discussed anywhere: where do you transfer pictures from raw to jpg? As I noticed, ACR greatly darkens the pictures (the pictures both in FastStone and on the camera display look much brighter in the shadows and in general), and therefore they constantly have to add exposure and, accordingly, noise. What do you advise?

  • anonym

    Another vacuum cleaner

    • Andrei

Dust is everywhere and in everything ... But Arkady's photographs prove that this lens is in good hands, even nothing ... There are no worthy competitors for this money.

    • Ivan

And which lenses in your experience are not vacuum cleaners? Besides fixes, of course?

      • Jury

All zoom lenses in which the rear lens is stationary, as a rule, is prof. lenses like https://radojuva.com/2012/11/obzor-nikon-ed-80-200-mm-2-8-d-af-mkii/. By the way, there are many fixes that, when focusing, move the entire lens block or rear lens, while moving the air inside the camera, but much less than the zoom from the view.

        • Ivan

Exactly. I’m just saying that because of the so-called vacuum cleaner, you can’t conclude that the lens is bad. I had 18-140. There was not a single speck of dust. But the quality is so-so. Now it’s 18-200. A gorgeous lens but dust really began to appear. I don’t know, it’s not connected with the lens, but with the fact that I began to shoot more (sometimes changing to fixes), including in dusty conditions. Now I want 24-120 f4. They also write about him as a vacuum cleaner. But I do not want this to stop me. Since otherwise the lens is suitable for my tasks (sharpness, focus speed)

Arkady, hello. I am looking for a replacement whale for my Nikon De90. I have been looking at something like Nikkor 18-200mm for a long time. One thing does not suit: the presence of a built-in autofocus motor. I don’t want to pay twice for the same thing, because the De90 has a “screwdriver”. Everywhere I search and everywhere only AF-S, but there is simply no AF: (Does this exist in general or will I have to buy AF-s? Or is there something else, close in parameters (and quality) to Nikkor 18-200mm, but AF?
    Thank you.

    Hello!
Tell me, please, what is better to choose from lenses
    for Nikon d40 18-200 or 18-300 Nikon DX AF-S
    Thanks for the answer

  • Anton

    Hello! Great site, thanks!
Are you planning to release a review of the Nikkor 18-300 DX AF-S VR lens in the near future?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I plan, only no one gives it for the test :)

  • Alexander

I bought myself a second version of this lens and after reading the instructions I finally realized why there are two stabilization modes ... .. Normal is designed for shooting panoramas and works either in the horizontal or vertical plane, while the panorama is automatically detected and the second Active works like a regular stabilizer in all directions ... Sam checked in practice, ....

  • Eva

I have such a lens Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical, but with the inscription “Made in Thailand”, red VR inscription and without a fixer at 18mm. This is me to the fact that the color of the inscription depends on the country of production, and the writing style of the country depends on the year of production (I have the style on the first of yours, which is Japanese).
By the way, I am very pleased with the lens as universal, but now I'm picking up something lighter from zooms and widths. If you advise something not too expensive, but worthy of attention, I will be very grateful. Objectives: shooting dancing in a confined space, architecture.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s just that your version is not GII, but G.

      • Eva

This is me because the color of the inscription VR is not a hallmark of the lens version, perhaps it is better to exclude it so as not to be confused.

        • Arkady Shapoval

This is indicated in order to quickly visually identify the lens. And that is the hallmark.

  • Irina

Arkady, good day. I have a DZ7000 DZ50 + 1.8 mm f18. Now I choose between 140-18 and 20-XNUMXz. What to get in the end?

  • Lancet

Great article. He listened to you, took this lens. Thank you so much for the pleasure of hiking and reporting. The lens is expensive, but worth the money.

  • Alexey

Hello. I apologize for being off topic, but still ask for your help. Having a Nikon 5200, I want to purchase a Nikon 18-300 VRII, will there be compatibility problems and will something be lame. I read a lot of things, but there is nothing about this bunch. I looked at 18-200 VRII for a long time (your review inclined to it), but the difference in price up to 300 is not large. Your review would help a lot, but it’s all gone and gone.
For any answer, THANKS in advance.

    • anonym

The larger the zoom, the worse the optical quality of the lens. I would not buy an additional segment between 200 and 300 mm.

      • Evgchita

..but sometimes it’s just him that’s missing)… the question is what and for what purpose you shoot.

  • Marina

    Hello, I have a D7000 + kit 18-105 mm + 50 mm f1.4.
I shoot portraits (in studios) and travel in diverse directions.
    1 / In the 50 mm studios, I’ll shoot some angles closely, for this purpose I plan to purchase a 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor.
2 / But I'm a big travel lover and want to have a good lens when traveling. I shoot different things - from architecture and landscapes to trifles, food, etc.

Question 1: Does it make sense to change the kit 18-105 to 18-200mm? after buying 50 mm, I use less whale 18-105 precisely because of the quality of the photos.

Question 2: how to buy 2 lenses, can switch to FF (D610)?

I will be very grateful for the answer, because I am tormented by doubts which week, but there is no one to advise me. Guys, what do you recommend? thanks.

  • anonym

The picture at 18-200 will not be better than at 18-105, and an even greater loss in quality will be noticeable in comparison with 50 / 1,4. 35 / 1,8 is not the best option for a portrait because of the stronger geometric distortion. And one more thing: any zoom lens will have a picture worse than a fix. So it may be your way - a selection of fixed type 35-50-85-135. But are you not tortured to override them ?!
Switching to FF - I, for example, do not see the point in this. Although here you should know better.
For a portrait on the FF, it is better to fix it at 85 / 1,8, and not 50 / 1,4. 18-105 or 18-200 will not go to the FF. I did not see a clear argument for the need to switch to FF in your question.
    My opinion:
    1 - keep the fix at 50 / 1,4, and instead of 18-200 it is better to take the long-range Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR Nikkor - it will have a better picture than the 18-200 ...
    2 - stay on D7000

    • Marina

Thanks for the answer! I have travel / portraits = 50/50. Nevertheless, I can still somehow get used to portraits in 50 mm studios, but when traveling I would like to have a good lens for a high-quality picture, and there is always little time to change fixes.
      I rent approximately this:
      http://marina-gordon.io.ua/album661536_4
      or is it http://marina-gordon.io.ua/album652233
(from these albums everything was shot on whale 18-105).
but I have enough money for one thing, either for 17-55mm f / 2.8G (I also look after it), or for Nikon D610.
Which is more important, lens or camera?
As if inclined to switch to FF, but so far the mind doubts whether it is necessary.

      • anonym

The lens is definitely more important. 50 mm on FF for a portrait - it seems to me that it will not be enough. For FF, the classic 85mm portrait fix is better. Those. After purchasing the D610, you will automatically need to purchase new lenses. Also, keep in mind that 18-105 on D610 will no longer be able to work on the entire matrix (at your choice - either a huge vignette, or switching the camera to DX-mode). If the FF is operated in DX-mode, then the whole point of buying a D610 is lost.

  • jean

The choice between 18-105 and 18-200 is advantageous which?

  • Andrei

It’s a pity that I couldn’t get an answer to my question in another thread, so I decided to repeat it here

I have been the owner of the NiKON D5100 camera since the fall of 2011

Now I thought about changing the 18-55 whale lens to a more universal one, the choice fell on 18-200, but on this site (in some of its sections) I met a lot of reviews on this lens and became thoughtful ..

Many praise the 18-200 lens for its versatility, but at the same time, some write that at a wide angle of 18, it may manifest a certain drawback when working with the built-in flash, namely the casting of shadow from the object - is visible due to the design (length of the lens) and Physics work built-in flash!

    Hence the question:
    1) how realistic is it to see the shadow from the 18-200 lens when working with the built-in flash when working at a wide angle
    2) how often will this flaw occur, so to speak, when connecting the D5100 with an 18-200 lens when working with the built-in flash at a wide angle
    3) if this character does not appear constantly, then why it may depend
    4) at what focal length this effect may not bother

Arkady, I ask you and all knowledgeable people to give the most detailed answer

You have interesting articles on lenses and cameras. I decided to purchase this lens in conjunction with 7100. Thanks for the article !!!

The author of the blog constantly writes about the fact that 24 megapixels is evil. 24 MP is a fact. And in terms of 24MP, this lens is dead. Do not buy it on modern cameras under any circumstances! The same goes for tamron-sigma "superzums". Don't turn your DSLRs into soap dishes. I have a Canon SX 30 at 500mm that gives better pictures than this lens ... Well, unless you use a subject for video shooting ... Although the motor is not the quietest here ... (really nothing)

I do not write that it is evil, I draw attention to the fact that 24 MP is not always good :)

Don't tell fairy tales…. My Nikon D7100 and 18-200GII give excellent quality and detail on it, but I tried to compare it with 18-140 on the same camera, so when you zoom to 100 percent, you can immediately see that 18-200 has normal sharpness, and 18-140 18 there is no sharpness ... At the same time, this 140-7000 on the D16 with 18MP on board gives a normal sharpness quality ... So it turns out that the newer 140-24 is not suitable for the new 18MP matrix, and the 200-XNUMX is just what you need ...

I have Nikon D7100 and 18-200GII ... When comparing with 18-140 I realized that 18-140 needs to be gotten rid of, it is worse in quality compared to 18-200 (visible with the naked eye) ... And this is despite the fact that 18-140 24 was supposedly designed for use on large 18MP matrices…. and even without going into details, one could assume that at prices (before the crisis) 200-22000 cost 18, and 140-11000 cost 18…. This alone says it all…. And my impressions of use were confirmed…. the product will not cost half the price, with better quality than the one that is twice as expensive ... The manufacturer and its marketers will not deceive themselves ... 200-7100 on the D7000 is much more pleasant in quality than on the DXNUMX ...

On my Nikon D7100 this lens gives a very good picture, and even at iso 6400 ... But I didn't like 18-140 at all on Nikon D7100 ... The picture from it is soapy, this is especially noticeable when magnified ... So I had to sell it ... But 18-200 even on the open gives an acceptable image ... And 18-140 on the D7000 with fewer pixels already gives a normal picture ... But at first I thought that with the newer 18-140 it would be the other way around ...

    Why not review 18-300 VR?

  • Jura ^ _ ^

Arkadiyu, but what about your archives with the original photographs, like in a wild look? Dude Bulo will visually check the images in the original, especially with the on-camera jpegs. =)

(I’m talking, I read the Internet from a netbook .. to that from your site (f-autopdlashtuvanny pid monіtorchik korisna, ta) photo on the mini-video is almost imagined, like on the camera screen. Well, through those and the video) comments)

  • Taras

    Thank you!
    Looking forward to review 18-300!
