Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical

This is a short review, since Radozhiv already has a review of the first version of the lens - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical.

First version Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical и second version Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical (from this review) differ only in the details.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical

Very often the first and second versions are called 'VR I' and 'VR II' - but this is a mistake. The designations 'VR I' and 'VR II' imply different stabilization performance. In fact lens stabilizer is the same... And lenses are correctly designated 'G' and 'GII'. This trick is used by marketers to sell Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6 more expensiveGII, telling, supposedly his stabilization system has been improved :(,

The visual difference between the two versions of Nikon 18-200mm

The visual difference between the two versions of Nikon 18-200mm

The differences between the two lenses are as follows:

  1. Different name. The second version has the designation 'GII' instead of 'G' in its name. Also, the 'DX SWM VR ED IF Aspherical' lettering box is located on different parts of the lens. Serial number labels are also found in various places.
  2. Availability zoom lock for the 'GII' version. The new 'Lock' button allows you to lock the zoom position at 18mm focal length. The lens from this review is fairly new, and therefore its trunk does not spontaneously protrude. If, over time, the trunk begins to live its own life, then the 'Lock' button will be quite in demand.
  3. Different color of the 'VR' lettering - the first version has an inscription red, the second version has - golden.
  4. First Lenses 1: 3.5-5.6G produced in Japan, approximately from 2005 to 2006. From 2006 to 2009, production moved to Thailand. All Lenses 1: 3.5-5.6GII produced only in Thailand. I have seen cases where Japanese 18-200 lenses were sold 2 times more expensive than Thai. I think that it is not worth overpaying for the old Japanese version, the new Thai lenses have exactly the same build quality.
  5. Version 1: 3.5-5.6G was released from November 2005 to July 2009. The 'GII' version is released from July 2009 to the present day (at least until autumn 2016).
  6. The versions have a slightly different case design. First of all, I select a narrower zoom ring in 1: 3.5-5.6GII.
  7. Most likely version 1: 3.5-5.6GII received an updated enlightenment of its optics.

Everything else about lenses is completely identical. What a bunch of obscure abbreviations (DX, AF-S, G, ED, SWM, VR, IF, Aspherical) mean can be found in the section on decoding of Nikon lens designations.

Conclusions

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical is a good versatile lens. Versions 1: 3.5-5.6G and 1: 3.5-5.6GII practically do not differ.

Comments: 93, on the topic: Review Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical

  • Sergei

Gentlemen and amateur photographers, help me make the right choice. I climbed a bunch of reviews, but never found an answer for myself.
What to choose NIKON AF-S 18-200 mm VRII or TAMRON 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD?

The goal is a universal travel lens (they are both). For other purposes, there is a fix and a wide-angle, now the choice is just such a station wagon. The question of the price is not worth it, I choose it by the quality / usability ratio. Carcass - Nikon D7200.

They write about the tamron that the picture quality suffers (especially sharpness), is noisy, it seems to focus a little slower. Although someone writes that Nicorr suffers the same sores.
What attracts tamron is a larger zoom, less weight, more compact. But if the picture quality is much worse, then what for these additional 70 mm? How do they work with video?

In general, any thoughts and real experience of comparison are welcome. Thank you all in advance!

    • Lynx

Yes, you hesitated to spam in each branch.

      • Sergei

I asked this question in the branches with Nikon and Tamron, i.e. both on the topic. So keep your “hesitated” to yourself.

        • Lynx

in three branches, so this is spam.

  • Viktor

Good day. Arkady, I bought this lens with my hands, everything is in order with the focus, whether the VR was hesitant, there would be no noise, as if to determine if the stub was working. Thank you.

  • Vital

Good day, did anyone have the opportunity to compare this lens with sigma dc oh hsm ii 18-200 3.5-6.3. The price he has at the moment is more interesting. If there is no difference then why pay more? :)

    • Vital

The question is removed already bought and checked.

      • Dlm

Vitalia, was it hard for you to write the result for some unknown reason?

  • Hsien

Has anyone already compared this GII with its younger brother - 18-140?

  • anonym

It seems that the year of release is not indicated? It's a pity

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it seems to be indicated.

  • anonym

    In description:

    > Versions have slightly different body designs.
    > First of all, I highlight the narrower zoom ring at 1: 3.5-5.6GI.

There seems to be a mistake - either G or GII is needed

  • NE

I bought one of the creatures that came from me about 4 years ago for the d5100 instead of the whale. When zooming quickly through the viewfinder, it significantly blows into the eye :)

    • anonym

      But doesn’t it blow?

  • Oleg

I want to ask, if you choose between this (or its older counterpart 18-200) and 16-85, how optically will they differ?
    Thank you!

    • Denis

16-85 is a quality lens and is sharp up to 35mm
      and 18-200 is a misunderstanding

      • Oleg

        Thank you)

      • Basil

You yourself are a complete misunderstanding!

    • Arkady Shapoval

18-200 is optically worse, but not particularly critical for amateur tasks

      • Oleg

        Thank you

    • Valentine

Fixes Of the relatively inexpensive Nikkor 35mm F1.8G and Nikkor 50mm F1.8G. 18-200 will not give quality, it will give an increase in focal length. If the issue is lengthening the focal length, it may be easier to buy a telephoto type 70-300.

      • Andrey

u menya est fx 50 mm 1.8. kachestvo zamechatelnoe! no mne neobjodim polevalentnyy obyektiv tak kak delayu foto legkoi atletiki i raznyx sorevnovakiy. ispolzuyu ves diapazon moego 18 140 tak kak delayu foto iz daleka 140 mm i na finishe 24 mm.

        • Valentine

The question should have begun with a description of your tasks. It became clear that he was not satisfied at 18-140. All the same, 18-200 is not an option, if the picture quality is not satisfied. Options - Nikons 24-120 F4 + 80-200 F2.8, or look towards even more professional solutions.

          • Andrey

        • Edward

there is no the same quality of zooms - they really simply cannot be done
there are good zooms, but one way or another they will yield 50 1.8g (1.4g, 1.4d)

          Nikon 17-55 2.8
or tamron 17-50 2.8 (you should look for a good copy)
          like a staffer
          +
80-200 4 (2.8) or 70-300 vr - like a tele - there are simply no decent telephoto cameras under dx

if you buy a nikon 24-70, then you should also change the camera to something full-frame
d750 - for example, at 7200 - it will not be able to prove itself better than 17-55, and most importantly, you will lose a wide angle, and it will no longer be a staff
and prices for nikon 24-70 are higher than prices for full-frame carcasses

          • Edward

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G ED VR II is also not a bad telephoto lens, under crop it will be even better (not in all) than 70-300 vr

            and definitely better than 70-300

            tamron 17-50 2.8
            + NIKKOR 55-200mm VR II
will be a very good and not expensive kit

            nikon 17-55 + (70) 80-200 4 (2.8) more expensive

Hello! Thanks for the site and advice. I am a novice amateur with Nikon 3100 whale lens 18-55, I want to change. Decided on a fix -50mm 1.8 G, but I can’t zoom ((((Help me choose something that is the most optimal price-quality ratio for an amateur. I need a zoom for all occasions, so to speak) Thank you !!

Thanks so much for the review. As always informative and interesting.

  • Alexey

There was already a question about the stub. Is it really possible to somehow determine whether it works or not? The only thing I see in the viewfinder is that sometimes the picture jumps to the side at the moment when the stub should be turned on.
At 55-300 I remember the picture in the viewfinder got up like glued. And it was clearly visible. Plus it gave in hand. At the time of launch. For some reason there is no such thing.

  • Andrei

Good afternoon. Help me decide. I want to take a travel zoom and choose between Nikon AF-S DX 18-140 VR and Nikon AF-S DX 18-200 VR (just G, not GII). Interested in what will be better in sharpness in the range of 18-140 mm. Both used, at a price of 18-200, even a little cheaper. Camera - D5200.

    • Andrei

Sorry, Arkady, I wrote to the wrong branch. If possible, transfer one of the specified lenses to the branch

  • Gleb

Interested in the answer to the next question in expanded form. Are there any of the alternatives listed above, including Nikon lenses, which would noticeably stand out with small aberrations and good SHARPNESS in the range of 30-100 mm, not only in the center but also throughout the frame?

  • Ruslan

Good day! Maybe someone will come in handy my comment. The Nikon 18-200mm vr ll is a great lens, I liked it a lot more than the new Tamron 16-300mm vc on the Nikon d7200. Personally, my opinion, I do not impose on anyone. Nikon 18-200mm vr ll is better at picture, assembly, quality of materials, sharper at 18 and 200mm (and it’s just sharper at all similar focal lengths, Tamron did not require corrections, it’s for sure, it’s just a soapy picture compared to Nikon). I specially bought two new lenses to compare calmly. Respect to Arkady separately, his site is very clear and useful for any amateur photographer!

  • Irina

Good day. Thank you very much for such detailed articles on lenses and cameras. I read a lot and finally got confused)))))). I have experience in photography for 4 years. Filmed with Canon 70D and Sigma 18-200 (c). Now there is a Nikon z50 camera with an adapter and its native kit 16-50. I want a versatile zoom lens. I would be very grateful for advice on which lens is suitable for this camera. Of course, at first I overclocked to 16-300 tamron, but I read the review and cooled down. I shoot mainly landscapes (and a lot in backlight), sometimes reportage. I would be grateful for advice and comments.

    • Onotole

Well, what does 16-50 not suit you? For such needs should fit well. Well, maybe add to it a fix like Sigma 30 / 1,4Art or something like that.

      • Irina

16-50 does not suit focal points, because I often shoot sports, and I also like to shoot birds.

    • Victor

I also bought a Nikon z50 and through an adapter I use nikkor 50 1.8g and nikkor 18-200 GII and 18-55 (I put it and forgot about it). The picture from 18-200 and from 50 1.8g and 18-55 on my nikon d5300 and nikon z50 is very different in quality. The d5300 is very good, the z50 is just cool. For use the following. Firstly, on the z50 with the latest firmware 2.0 and the included constant stabilizer 18-200, it focuses for a long time and often misses the photo, in the video it works as it should and helps a lot on long focal lengths. When switching the stub to normal, the shooting speed is already acceptable. Secondly, if from a staff 16-50 practically does not lose the subject and focuses on what is needed immediately, then the 18-200 will lose the object constantly. We took a shot with the subject and if it moves quickly, be sure that the camera's autofocus will like something else, not the subject. Therefore, focus on the selected point, since the cross can be quickly activated. Or half-press the shutter several times until autofocus catches the subject itself. And this is the trouble with all my f-mount lenses through an adapter, which is 50 1.8g, which is 18-200 GII, which is 18-55 3,5-5,6. I just cry when the reportage needs to be removed. But! Big but! All these losses and misses are everywhere except for the most extreme focal values. At 18mm everything is super, at 200mm everything is super and comparable to a staff, well, a little slower, but not critical. Exactly 200 and exactly 18. If the subject moves quickly in the frame, then the autofocus will not have time to work out in low light, although it would seem that the z50 allows this in the dark, in comparison with the d5300 head blade. For myself, I decided to wait for z lenses for the crop, both sigma and tamron threatened to surprise everyone for z mount lenses to release, maybe Nikon will do something. If there are zooms from nikon for z50, I will immediately throw off 18-200 and buy. In the meantime, having filled my hand and getting used to the whims of this camera and lens bundle, I can say that it suits me. And yes, if you shoot static objects or slowly moving ones, then everything is gorgeous, everything is fine. For fifty dollars I will immediately write to take it unambiguously, for it is high-aperture, for it draws pleasantly, etc. The focus through the adapter, as in the 18-200, is a little slower than on the d5300, not for reporting unambiguously, but since I use it as a portrait lens, I don't care at all for speed. Sorry for the confusion I could tell, I hope I helped. Amateur level.

UPD released firmware 2.01, autofocus has become much better on F-mount lenses. I already like working with them. :)
