Review of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Review of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

In total, Nikon has 6 such lenses:

It is believed that the lenses of this series are well suited for some types of portrait shooting - they have rather weak distortion, and a similar combination of focal length and aperture makes it easy to control the depth of field. In 2012, the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G replaced the very popular Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D.

There is another 85-aperture light from a third-party manufacturer - Sigma EX 85mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1.8G IF SWM was introduced in early 2012 and became a replacement for the popular Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor. I was immediately surprised by the size of the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G, compared to 85mm f / 1.8D the new lens is noticeably 'thicker' and only slightly lighter.

The figure below shows all three generations of Nikon Nikkor 85 / 1.8 class autofocus lenses:

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D and Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 и Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D and Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Bad news - the new Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G now focuses slower than its big brother. I just can't understand why it was necessary to upgrade 85mm f / 1.8D to the AF-S SWM version and, at the same time, get a lens that focuses more slowly at the output? The same situation with 85mm F / 1.4GNwhich focuses much slower non-motorized old version 85mm f / 1.4D... What is Nikon doing? It's too bad that new motorized lenses focus more slowly than their predecessors. I also want to note that Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G is very much behind in focusing speed and its analog from Canon - Canon EF 85mm F / 1.8 USM. It turns out that the old Canon EF 85mm F / 1.8 USM wins in focus speed on all 85-current Nikon.

Example on Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Example on Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G is made only in China. The lens has a plastic case, to the touch is no different from the new Nikon fix lenses: Nikon 50mm F / 1.8G, Nikon DX 35mm F / 1.8G. Unlike 85mm f / 1.8DThe G-version lost the metal thread for the light filter, and the 9-blade aperture, but retained the metal mount and acquired the mode M / AM. Old 85mm f / 1.8D still made better than the new G-version.

This is what the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM looks like from different angles, on the Nikon AF camera N8008S, with a Nikon HB-62 blend and compared to Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (MKII):

The Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G comes with an HB-62 bayonet hood that can be mounted backwards and taken with you anywhere. The hood is not screwed into the light filter, but is put on using special slots on the lens. If you put the hood in transport mode, you completely lose access to the focusing ring. Front filter diameter - 67mm. The lens is nice, looks good on the camera.

The good news - Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G has high optical performance. The lens is very sharp, sharper 85mm f / 1.8D, and with very good bokeh.

Differences Autofocus 85-current Nikon

Differences autofocus 85-current Nikon. Nevertheless, version 85 1,8G received the most points from me.

Focusing

Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G focuses very quietly thanks to 'SWM'to the motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave / ultrasonic motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. On cameras Nikon D80, D700, D750 и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro I had no complaints about the accuracy and tenacity of auto focus. Only the focusing speed left an unpleasant residue.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

In manual focus mode, the ring rotates 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus. Focusing by hand is nice and easy. During auto focus, the focus ring remains stationary.

The minimum focusing distance is 80 cm, while you can get a maximum magnification of 1: 8. The lens has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale for the F / 16 value and a mark for working in the infrared spectrum.

Information on choosing a portrait lens can be found in the 'Portrait Fixed Lenses for FX Cameras', the optical schemes of all 85-ok can be found in the section'Nikon Fix Lens Schemes'. What do the designations in the lens name (AF-S, SWM, IF, G) mean in the article 'Types of Nikon Lenses'. How to achieve maximum blurring of the background with Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G SWM IF is described in section 'Blurred background'. On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will fit 127,5mm due to crop factor.

Example on Nikon 85 1.8G

Example on Nikon 85 1.8G

Sample photos on Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G

The lens is sharp. Like many fast lenses, the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G suffers from chromatic aberration, and the fringing is especially pronounced (the color of the blur zone is purple and green). Distortion is minimal, vignetting on FX cameras disappears at F / 2.8. I was very pleased that the lens practically does not respond to side and backlight, it is very difficult to catch glare. The bokeh of the lens deserves special attention. Many sites write that the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G produces super-bokeh, yes, the bokeh is really good, but still 85mm F / 1.4GN does not reach.

You can download RAW source files at this link (60 files in .'NEF 'format, 330 MB). All photos were shot using protective filter Hoya HMC 67mm UV (0).

Example photo on Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM

Differences between Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D (1.8D) and Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM (1.8G)

  1. Version 1.8D older than 1.8G. Version 1.8D was introduced in March 1994, and 1.8G in January 2012. Thus, the difference in technology is 18 years.
  2. Version 1.8D It does not have a built-in focusing motor, and therefore it will be difficult to work with on younger Nikon cameras. In turn, 1.8G is equipped with a SWM motor and will work well on any Nikon digital SLR cameras.
  3. Because the 1.8D uses a camera motor (a so-called “screwdriver”), the lens makes a lot of noise during focusing. The 1.8G version works almost silently.
  4. Version 1.8D focuses faster.
  5. Version 1.8D does not have a focus mode switch. 1.8G has a wonderful switch M / AM.
  6. During auto focus, the focus ring 1.8D rotates and cannot be touched. During auto focus on 1.8G, the focus ring does not rotate.
  7. Version 1.8D Uses an internal focusing type Rear Focusing System (RFS), a rear focusing system that moves the rear elements to focus. In turn, the 1.8G uses fully internal focusing, during which neither the front nor the rear elements move.
  8. Version 1.8G has a longer stroke of the focus ring (120 degrees, versus 90 degrees for 1.8D).
  9. Version 1.8D has a hard stop for instantly focusing on infinity (hard infinity-focus stop). In the case of 1.8G, accurate aiming at infinity is carried out using automatic focusing (all due to temperature limitations of the material).
  10. Version 1.8D It has an aperture control ring, which can be very useful for working on some film cameras, as well as while working on cameras of other systems. For example, some photographers buy 1.8D to shoot video using Canon or Sony cameras, where the iris can be controlled using the iris ring. Version 1.8G lacks such a ring, and aperture control is possible only with the help of camera controls.
  11. Version 1.8D a little harder.
  12. The 1.8G has a rubber seal near the lens mount to protect the lens and camera from dust and moisture.
  13. Version 1.8D smaller in size, in particular, it uses filters of a smaller diameter.
  14. Version 1.8D uses metal thread for light filters, and 1.8G uses plastic thread.
  15. Version 1.8D It has 9 aperture blades, versus 7 1.8L blades.
  16. Version 1.8D uses a metal hood that is screwed into the thread of the front filter and cannot be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. Version 1.8G uses a plastic bayonet hood with the ability to install the reverse side.
  17. У 1.8D the minimum focusing distance is 85 cm, versus 80 cm for the 1.8G (less is better).
  18. Part of the lenses 1.8D made in Japan, and part in Thailand. All 1.8G lenses are made in China.
  19. У 1.8D There is a label for working in the infrared spectrum.
  20. У 1.8D there are two marks of the depth of field scale - for F / 11 and F / 16. The 1.8G has a notch for F / 16 only.
  21. Touch version 1.8D assembled much more reliable than 1.8G.
  22. Optically 1.8G is better than 1.8D, First of all, the difference is noticeable during operation on the f / 1.8 aperture.

As you can see, at least 1.8G is 18 years newer than the old man 1.8D, but the latter, in some nuances, is better than the newer model. Overview Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D You can view here.

My use experience

I shot on the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G at several weddings, the difference between the F / 1.8G version and F / 1.8d quite noticeable, especially in sharpness at f / 1.8. Despite some flaws, the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G is by far the best price / quality ratio among the rest of the Nikon 85s. because i recommend it as an inexpensive and good fast-fix for shooting portraits both in crop and in full frame. Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G does almost everything the same as Nikon 85mm F / 1.4G, while its price is many times lower :).

You know, I liked your pictures taken on this lens! True, in your review of portraiture there are few portrait photographs, but this once again proves that with this lens you can shoot not only portraits, but also nature, landscapes. Your review came out very on time, I just looked at this lens for myself, now I’ll probably take it! Thank you for the review !!!

      time

  • sergey

a good review, someone knows why the price of 500 bucks at a time when a fifty-fifty 1: 1.8 price is worth 230 bucks is the 85th much more difficult to manufacture or there are other glasses, I think that in the 21st century there should be the same where to make lenses (in terms of technology), or here other factors affect the price

    • Leirk

What are the factors? Yes, fifty dollars have always been the cheapest and most diverse, and besides, 85mm is already a narrower focus-portrait shooting.

    • Denis

At the same aperture value, a lens with a larger focal length will have more lenses, a larger lens - a larger surface area to be treated and more glass itself. More expensive, if only because of this.

      • Dmitriy

When there is mass production, when lenses and plastic are poured out in tons ... then there is not much difference in the cost of 50a and 85i ... It's about marketing and perhaps patents.

    • Vladimir.

I have already written, but having the lens available, I will say that the glass in diameter seems to be twice as large as that of the fifty (although I compare it with Helios 81). It is written that the diameter of the thread for the light filter is 67mm. And the fifty-fives have 52. Visually, much more.

    • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

I think that the vast majority of us who do not trade at weddings-anniversaries-sabantuy-corporate parties should not pay half a hundred bucks, especially if there is at least some sharp and bright 50-ka. And if you are so attached, then buy a fix 105. Thing! What makriki ... And portraits ...
I don't know Nikon's glass, 105 is more successful! The lens is eternal ...
Well, if you are a young, but an early photographer, moreover, not rich, but with ambitions, and initially you buy only light optics, then after the 35 / 1,8 staff, save money for a G-85, or - a cheaper option - take it ji-50-ku, and only then, when you get rich, - 105-ku ... All these glasses are liquid, because they are running.

  • Maksim

Great lens, my favorite glass on the D7000. I join Arkady and recommend as a portrait.

  • Roma

So is it worth changing 85d to g?

    • Lynx

      and why?

      • Roma

The review says g is better than d.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I would not change.

    • anonym

No, absolutely not worth it, about the sharpness - delirium, I have D, and the sharpness is even too sharp

  • Eugene

Dreamed of 85 since the purchase of the camera. I chose this one exclusively for the price, I like it, but the aforementioned fringing brings to a white heat. Lilac and green glare anywhere: on the hair, in earrings and even in the pupils. Who will tell you how to fight?

    • Dmitriy

      Edit in lightroom.

  • Oleg

And in comparison with Tamron 90 / 2.8, which of these lenses will be more interesting, in particular on the crop?

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

“It's the same with the 85mm f / 1.4GN, which focuses much slower than its older non-motorized 85mm f / 1.4D. What is Nikon doing? It is very crazy that new motorized lenses focus more slowly than their predecessors. ”

The article is about 1.4g; Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G sharp, with fast auto focus, ideal for portraiture.
Maybe the focusing speed depends on the carcass?

    Judging by the test http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=791&Camera=614&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=732&CameraComp=614&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

1.4G chromatic aberration is significantly greater.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Article about 1.4g updated.

    • Denis

On the Nikon D7000 (on the FX it is probably even better) the Nikkor 85 1,4G focuses very accurately, f / 1,4 is fully operational - the phase focus falls into 99%. Nikon prioritizes focusing accuracy over speed.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

Although Nikon has the best quality inexpensive portrait lens, I won't take it because of chromatic aberrations. I chose 105 / 2.8G macro. But I recently ordered the Russian Helios 40-2. I wanted something unusual and without aberrations. How will he arrive (if the Russian post does not fail) - I will describe the impressions.

    • oils

Hey. Do not tell me where the lens 85 / 1.8g af-s portrait book ordered. Maybe it’s cheaper. And then we have a price that is bending. On the skin Throw away if that. Thanks. mr.ekkko@mail.ru

  • Sergei

Of all the lenses I have or have, this is my favorite. Sharp and precise. Well, for those who love portrait photography (like me), it's better not to find it for that kind of money.

  • Anna

    Good evening. Help me choose my first portrait lens. I choose between Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G and Nikon 50mm f / 1.8g af-s

      Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G

    • Glory B.

Anya, I have both. I can tell you with confidence that 85mm 1.8g is better for a portrait of one person than 50mm 1.8g. For a portrait of a group of people, 50mm is better, otherwise you have to go far.
But for a portrait of one model, a 50mm waistband is not suitable, because you are standing too close to the model, and the model absolutely involuntarily starts to get embarrassed and pinched.
The sharpness of the image (I tried to shoot the same flowers by screwing 50mm 1.8g and 85mm 1.8g on the Nikon D800) 85mm 1.8g exceeds 50mm 1.8g, although it costs twice as much.

  • Stasyan

I, too, will be bombing myself for 85mm 1.8g soon) the bazooka is on the way

  • Stasyan

Arkady thanks for all the information, you only confirmed it)

  • Alexander

Good day! I appeal to you Arkady and to all those who have active experience of using 85ki on a crop. Can this lens be used on a DX camera not only as a portrait lens, but also as an average telephoto lens? Wouldn't the “softness” of a lens, designed for a portrait, interfere with this? It is also very embarrassing that it does not have an image stabilizer. All the same, 85 mm on the crop will be about 130 eq.mm, which means that the shutter speeds should be no longer than 1/160 s, and even better, 1/200 s. Thanks in advance!

    • Sergei

Well, if 120mm is enough, then it’s quite suitable, and shutter speed is often densely 1/200 at least needed, because even a lens with a stabilizer will save the landscape from grease, but only the shutter will delay the children who play. It’s always better with a stub, but it’s all about money .

    • Alexander Samara

Yes, equivalent to 127 mm. But only the width of the frame. The focus itself will remain 85 mm
Therefore, the extract and should be considered from these 85

  • Glory B.

Nikkor 85mm 1.8G is my most lens of all that I have. As for the softness that is inherent in portraiture, I bet. On my Nikon D800, it produces such sharpness that you can count all the eyelashes, pores, hair clippers, hairs on the face. Then I have to smooth out all these skin details in the editor.
I also tried it as a macro shot of flowers, insects. It produces sharper images than the Nikkor 50mm 1.8G.
English-speaking reviews of experts say that the image quality that the Nikkor 85mm 1.8G produces is about 95% of the 1.4G quality. Is it worth overpaying more than 3 times more because of 5%?
Well, yes, if you are a super professional and rowing money with a shovel, then it is worth it.
If you are a beginner professional, then 85mm 1.8G is for you.
By the way, autofocus turned out to be very helpful, when I had to screw on the (gray) ND16 filter to overcome bright sunlight in the background and shoot models in the shade with a flash (while opening the wide aperture for blurring). I tried to set the focus manually, but I really don’t see anything through this dark filter. Autofocus did a great job of this, and I got sharp shots with f2.8 aperture
The closed body of the new G-type lenses provides good protection against dust and moisture penetration.

    • The Hedgehog

And who is a “beginner professional”? :-))))))

      • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

And what's funny!? A very accurate nickname ... In addition, the beginner pros in this business prevail today.

      • Glory B

A “beginner professional” is a photographer who photographs not only “for the soul”, but has already started making money from photography, but has not yet made enough money for super expensive lenses.
I see nothing shameful in this. What's the point of putting a ton of money into a business that may “never go”?
And those who just know how to take good pictures as a hobby are not professionals, because the word “professional” comes from the word “profession”, that is, a way of making money.

  • Paul

I have been using this lens on the D3000 for a month now, and I noticed what a thing, because with crop I have to go a very long distance for full-height portraits, then the pictures come out soapy. Waist or shoulder portraits have very good sharpness. My personal opinion is that for crop you need to have two portraits, for full-growth photos it is 50mm, but for waist or shoulder photos it is better than 85mm. Does it mean that? I want to send the question to everyone who is interested in this topic.

    • Andrew

What shutter speeds do you shoot? At 85mm on the crop it will be 127.5mm so less than 1/100 is better not to go down. For 50mm you can shoot about 1/50 without stirring. I have 35 DX / 50mm / 85mm portraits not bad at 35mm.

    • Vyacheslav

I completely agree with you))) 50 is more suitable for full growth)) and you don’t have to go far)) and a 85mm full-length and large portrait!

    • Dmitriy

I would add that for a full-height portrait, 35 is more suitable

  • Paul

I use a shutter speed of 160, and I control the aperture according to the power of the flashes or use an ND filter, shoot with a tripod, but photos at a distance of 5 m are still soapy, you need to come closer to improve detail, but then we are not talking about full-length portraits. He concluded that you need to buy a fifty dollars on the crop for portrait photographs, which you won’t have to go quite far with and take photographs with shutter speed 75

    • Lynx

And how I shoot on a crop at 135 / 3,5 - I am amazed! no other miracle!

  • Paul

And you can see the photos where you shot full-height portraits on crop 135 / 3,5

  • Alexander

What advise to take a lens for family photography (mainly portraits) on the d7000: Nikkor 85mm 1.8G or Nikkor 85mm 1.4D?
After 2 years I plan to switch to FX.

    • Andrew

Judging by the reviews, the Nikon 85 1.8G did not go far from the 85mm 1.4G. I personally made a choice in 85mm 1.8G and am very pleased! Here is an example shot last week: http://goo.gl/qSkXtb The resolution and sharpness is simply unimaginable overrides all my other fixes like 35mm / 50mm / 20mm. I think if you are not afraid of made in China then 85mm is worth taking.

  • Jury

Are there any advantages of the D version compared to the G, if you do not take into account the price and the lack of its own motor in the first? First of all, the picture and the reliability of the lens are of interest. I just thought that the D is a more time-tested model, in which there is more metal and, perhaps, this lens is made better.

    • Alex

As far as I know, slightly smaller CAs (although if you take a second-hand one, with a lot of dust inside, like mine, ....), and apparently “blurriness” when photographing brides :-) at an open aperture close - only a plus, because. to. less need to use the FSH, I think to change my 1.8d, but I don't see the point anymore ... I like the picture from it. And the bokeh is nicer)

  • Catherine

Hello. Please tell me on the nikon d7100 as a portrait it is better to take 85 1.8G or samayang 85 1.4? I'm interested in the quality of the picture, the lack of autofocus on the second does not scare

  • Garik

If you are not afraid of the lack of autofocus, then find Kiev
    Arsat 100 / 2,8 aka "Kaleinar-5H" with F mount (Nikon)
Elegantly removes at a penny cost. I shot them in both crop and ff

    • Sergei

Here it must be added that only d200 d300 d700 d800 d600 and d3 d4 will work in the priority of the aperture with a kaleinar, in the other nikon only in manual mode, you’ll only be shooting on the street for some time. An exception is if a person has a keen eye, but these are usually photographers who successfully shot on film when the negative is not yet visible and
the smell of light was important

  • Ruslan

And can you throw a photo with an example photo on Nikon 85mm F1.8G with the legs of a girl in a larger size? The colors are so nice.

  • Maksim

I chose a fix, between 50 / 1,8 and 85 / 1,8. Bought 85 / 1,8, planted on the carcass and let's take a picture. A cool lens, focusing in one fell swoop, sharp, natural proportions of the face, no distortion, portrait, there is a portrait. I advise you to take it. Example photo with a candle at night http://фотомир74.рф/portfolio/detskoe/ , for the sake of such pictures and took it. True, in the afternoon, on the street, the diaphragm has to be pushed up to 4, and then 1,8 misses, a small DOF.

  • Fira

But does it fit both crop and full frame?

    • Dmitriy

Of course it does. I tried on both the d5100 and d90 and the d800.

  • Kostya

Tell me, besides portraits, what else can you use this glass on the crop for !!! I use 50 mm 1,4D + D7000, I don't want to buy a zoom for a lot of money, or a cheap one with mediocre performance - will a pair of 50 mm + 85 mm fixes be enough for shooting portraits + architecture with a not very wide angle? What fix would be advised for such genres !!!
