Lens Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 for writing a review to me has provided Alexey Kornev.
Until the last moment, I was sure that Jupiter-6 is a lens for medium format cameras, because it was copied from German Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2,8 / 180... In fact, Jupiter-6 turned out to be much smaller than its German ancestor and is intended for narrow-format cameras. Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 was produced in several versions for SLR cameras with M42 and M39 mounting threads (not to be confused with rangefinder cameras). Usually older lenses with M39 thread have a metal white body, newer versions (for M42 thread) were produced in a black body frame, and this modification was called Jupiter-6-2... You can also find export versions of the lens called 'Jupiter-6', 'Jupiter-6-2'. And this review presents a rare option - with a zebra framefilmed with a Konvas movie camera and converted to M42 threads. Its number is No. 001216, and it was manufactured at the KMZ plant.
Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 is a very pleasant heavy fix. I was absolutely comfortable shooting with this lens and camera. Nikon D700. The large weight of the lens, equal to almost 1.5 kg, did not interfere, but only removed the shake when shooting handheld... In full frame, Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 is a very nice portrait lens.
The focusing ring of the lens is ribbed and rotates almost 360 degrees. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, the trunk of the lens lengthens by 3-4 cm. My lens does not have focus distance and depth of field indicators. The aperture is continuously adjustable, from F / 2.8 to F / 22. The number of aperture blades is 10 pieces and they form a hole resembling a circular saw, the same as that of Helios-40-2... The lens has a pronounced single-layer lilac coating. Front filter diameter - 77mm (Sonnar has 86mm).
Sample Photos
Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 turned out to be quite sharp, contrasting. There are no serious claims to the image. IN JVI the lens gives off a greenish-yellow tint, typical of many old single-coated lenses. I love Sonnar's lens bokeh. By the way, there are rumors that Jupiter-6 is the real 'Sonnar', even more than the family Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2,8 / 180which have already been issued redesigned Sonnar - 'Ernostar' scheme.
The parameters shown in the photo gallery:
Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 using adapter KP-42 / N without a lens, while there is no way to focus to infinity. How to use old lenses on modern Nikon cameras read here, and on Canon here... Everything was filmed with a screwed-in metal hood. On-camera JPEG L (compression 'optimal quality'). Shot in Auto ISO mode, with shutter speed no longer than 1/400 second. Functions: vignetting control, ADL, noise reduction at long exposures, noise reduction at high ISOs were turned off. All shot in Picture Control mode SD (standard mode): contrast correction - 0, brightness - 0, saturation - 0, hue - 0, sharpness - position 5 between 0 and 9. Used white balance: 'Auto', 'Shadow' and 'Sunny'. The size of the photos was reduced to 1080px by 1623px Q = 85% (approximately 2 MP).
Of course, Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2,8 / 180 sharper, more contrast, but also heavier, in addition, some modifications of the CZJ Sonnar have multi-enlightenment. Now Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 is being sold at 'exorbitant prices'. For practical use, I advise you to get a compact 135mm Jupiter-37A or other similar portrait lens. Jupiter-6 is still quite inconvenient to transport, and on crop 1,5X EGF lens is 270mm.

Conclusions:
Jupiter-6 2,8 / 180 is a good old high-aperture fix. Can be a great portrait painter. For many users such a lens will be too heavy and 'long', especially on cropped cameras. There are also rumors that Jupiter-6 does not stand on amateur CZK because of its frame, which rests against a built-in flash. Jupiter-6 from this review quietly 'sits' on my amateur cameras Nikon D80, Canon 350D.

Fixed
Since there is no way to shoot on the FF, I use the crop with the Pentax K20D camera. Portraits are obtained so that you can limit yourself to minimal processing.

The lens is really for the enthusiast, it costs a lot. But there is a little advice: who wants to buy such glass, it is worth taking a ride through the film studios, namely, the workshops for the maintenance of equipment. Find the local "Uncle Sasha", whether something like that was lying there for good money. He who seeks will find :)
for such photos you need to take your hands off .. and also a person takes money for his services. shame.
What don't you like? Photos are test, and no one takes money for viewing them.
From photographs of Arkady you can judge which vegetables and fruits are ripening at the moment in its climatic zone. And only the lilac flower always remains at all photo shoots. This is any object for photographing. Sometimes it seems that it is one and the same flower.
Someone sitting at home and testing on targets, someone on the flowers.
I also like the flowers better. Well, we do not photograph targets in life ...))) We photograph objects of animate and inanimate nature. And more often, after all, on the street. Therefore, it is more interesting for me to see what picture the lens gives than how many lines it can convey.
Arkady, thanks again for the presented review and, of course, for the work done (I have already purchased about 5 Soviet lenses after your reviews). I do not agree with the author of the previous post (flowers, etc.), but, frankly, I would like to see portraits, since the lens is more valuable as a portrait lens. By the way, this is not the first time when you talk about this or that lens as a good portrait lens, and portraits are either not or 1-2. Sorry for being straightforward. From SW. Alexei.
I spoke about fruits and vegetables only because it is really interesting to observe the difference in the climate zone. We haven’t even let out these plants yet, and Arkady’s photographs show flowers from these plants. Well, further in each review it was interesting to observe this difference. That's all. And nothing else.
About the portrait photo on such lenses. My Jupiter 37a does not always fall into focus if I photograph without a tripod, but here the focal length will be larger. To get a normal portrait, you need studio shooting, and Arkady takes pictures on the street. In this case, you have to be content with several more or less decent portraits, which are obtained rather by accident. And I perceive the words of Arkady that this is a good portrait portrait as his opinion that this lens MAY act as a portrait portrait due to its parameters. THOSE. I accept on faith.
It is “narrow” for the studio. Perhaps a hangar. You can shoot portraits with him ONLY in an open space, an interesting picture is obtained with backlight.

Interested in how to remake the lens, which was removed from konvasa, under m42? There is just such a lens, but I do not know whether it is worth taking?

recently appeared and I have such a large and iron, white M39.
when compared with telear 200 / 3,5, biometar 120 / 2,8, kaleinar 150 / 2,8 and KO120 / 2,1 shows greater contrast and excellent sharpness. It is very convenient to aim - the small grip is perfectly visible. 2,8 is absolutely working.
minus only one - weight and size.

black jupiter-6-2
I love the smooth watercolor blur of the background of this lens ...
Arkady, the German ancestor Carl Zeiss Jena Olimpia Sonnar was originally designed for rangefinder contact and was produced with a flexoscope, and began to be produced under the medium format since 1952. In the first series of the Yu-6, there were Zeiss lenses units received by reparation.
(And in this review, a rare option is presented - with a 'zebra' -type frame, shot from a Konvas camera and converted to M42 thread. Its number is 001216, and it was made at the KMZ factory.) - and how to determine in which year the glass was made ?
My number 004453
I recently acquired Jupiter-6 with the number 0000356. At the same time, the same lens WITH THE SAME NUMBER was being sold at the same auction. As far as I understand, this glass was made for theatrical and sports purposes in low light conditions. I'll try it in a sports theater: -) - I'll post pictures.
Do not confuse a 180 mm zonnar from Carl Zeiss (Jena) with a zonnar from western Zeiss (Oberkochen, aka Zeiss-Opton). The latter, indeed, has the features of Ernostar. The Jena sonnar is precisely the classic Bertele sonnar (the second component is very thick). However, it existed in two versions (at least). The first is the famous “Olympic” zonnar. It was originally designed for a narrow film. It was produced for a long time for different shanks (practice, ekzakta, practical - I saw in the film version). He did not have a jump, but was compact, albeit heavy. The tripod clamp resembles the current clamps. Its distinguishing feature is the FLAT rear lens (it looks more like a UV filter). So Yu-6 was copied from it. Subsequently, Zonnar-Olympia was recalculated in the GDR for use with the 6x6 format (Praktisiks - Pentacon Six), and this time with a jump rope. It is he who is full in our commissions. Its distinctive feature is a convex-concave rear lens. Well, in Oberkochen they recounted Zonnar-Olympia with the aim, among other things, of weight reduction. Its optical design differs from the original, although it was written in advertising brochures that it was the direct heir to Olympia ...
I wanted to add regarding the fact that Jupiter 6 (we are talking about the old version not painted) does not get into amateur DSLRs! Yes it is, but do not despair! After all, these lenses were made with pens and not stamped :-). I myself use sony a77 and I had to choose for a long time exactly the lens that would not catch the built-in flash on the camera. The copy was found with difficulty but to find really. I’m very pleased with the lens, although I have a crop :-)
I use the rule: Soviet lenses are interesting - only if I advise you all for free.
The ward of the mind. The shovel principle - if only for free.))) And hu hu not XO XO ???
My Jupiter 6-2 sits through the Nikon M42 adapter into the bayonet mount only with a tripod mount! And no other way. Because of this, shooting from a tripod is only possible by screwing up the tripod's thread onto the camera. The weight of the glass creates an imbalance. In addition, the control of the diaphragm number is on the side below. Extremely uncomfortable. In general, I like the picture. Maybe it mounts correctly on the bayonet of other cameras, namely with tripod mounts down, and the iris control is at the top? Tell me.
You can move the tripod ring. The scale too, together with the liznoblock. But the working segment will go ...
I picked up a wonderful M42 adapter from K&F. Tripod mount at the bottom, aperture control at the top - just right! The cost is 1300 wooden.
Version in the white building
The original zonnar chromatite is noticeably smaller.
Bila (middle version)
Love the six for the beautifully blurred watercolor background. That's really BokeMonster ...
