Review Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1: 1.8 f = 85mm

What could be better than a fast 85mm fix? Nikon has been making aperture 85s since 1948. It is a pity that recently Nikon saves on metal for modern cases 1.8G и 1.4G... In the hands of the Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1: 1.8 f = 85mm, it feels like a 'grenade'. The lens is heavy (420g), in an excellent body with a chrome insert. 'Auto' stands for automatic iris control.

Please note that this Non AI lens, for normal operation on modern cameras it should be converted to the AI version. My lens has already been redone for AI. Using old lenses is not very difficult, as described correctly in the section AI-S.

My copy number is 221500 (released between 1969 and 1971). The prefix 'H' in the name 'Nikkor-H' means a 6-lens design (from 'Hexa' - 'six'). Lenses with this optical design were produced from 1964 to 1977. There are several modifications of the lens, which differ in a different body frame and coating. You can see an overview of the later model - Nikon Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 K.

The focusing ring is metal, rotates 180 degrees. MDF is 1 meter. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, all lenses are linearly displaced. The aperture is adjustable from F / 1.8 to F / 22 and has a total of 6 aperture blades. The lens has a 'small' front filter diameter of 52mm.

Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1.8 / 85 has not been updated to AI-S version. The new AI / AI-S lenses already had a different optical scheme and a little smaller aperture F / 2.0, and in 1987 came autofocus Nikon 1.8 / 85.

Sample Photos

The lens creates good quality images. The lens has excellent sharpness and bokeh. Aberrations are noticeable, which is typical for high-aperture optics.

My experience

A good lens, of course, is not a new nanocrystal monster, but with the help of Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1.8 / 85 you can get wonderful photos.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Approximately 2 times cheaper than the new 85mm 1.8 AF-D

  • Seryozha Ogorodnik

It seems to me that his drawing is similar to 85 1,4 D

  • Andrei

If I am not mistaken this is a zonar?

    • Arthur

This is not a zonar, but a planar (6 lenses in 4 groups). The lens is a THING. I have its latest modification K (Nikkor K 85 / 1.8). It works very well with dandelion, I like its bokeh more than the current 85 / 1.8D and 85 / 1.8G

    • Andrei

Having used 85 1,4D to sell 85 / 1,8 (I have the first version) I’m not even going to, the pictures are different from them.

  • Paul

Arkady, it’s very interesting, but which lens did you like more:
    Nikkor 105 2.5 Ai or Nikkor-H 85 1.8?

  • anonym

This item is for sale, number 221500

  • Yura

I bought this lens not long ago, thanks to Arkady's review. The number starts at 25 ... I use it on d7000 so far. A very cool lens made only of glass and metal. Old but nowhere there is no backlash .. The pictures are good and contrasting. I think they will shoot for the next 30 years ..)

  • Sergei

Can it be used on a 35mm matrix?

    • a guest

      Even need

  • Alexey

Good afternoon, thanks for the review.
It seems that examples of photos have flown.
