MC Auto-Beroflex MT 1 review: 4,5 f = 75-200mm Macro

MC Auto-Beroflex MT 1: 4,5 f = 75-200mm Macro is an old film zoom with a maximum aperture of 1: 4,5 over the entire zoom range, and with a M42 fit thread. Despite the constant aperture, in fact, the lens turned out to be very weak in terms of image quality.

The lens has an old pump-action one-ring design - one wide rubberized ring is responsible for zooming and focusing. To zoom, the ring must be moved along the lens. When focusing, the ring rotates 270 degrees. The minimum focusing distance is only 1 meter, while you can get macro with a magnification of 1: 4. When focusing, the front lens rotates and slides out. But the rear lens remains stationary when zooming and when focusing.

The lens has depth of field scale for F / 11 (75 to 135mm) and for F / 22 (75 to 200mm). The focusing distance scale is indicated in meters and feet, the lens has a zoom indicator for macro, from 1: 8 to 1: 4. The lens has a 'A <-> M' aperture mode switch. The diaphragm itself has only 6 blades. The lens has a built-in small telescopic hood. The hood is more annoying with its flimsy construction than it really helps in the work.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.

Sample Photos

My copy creates an image of terrible quality, the main problem is low contrast and low sharpness. Typically, such a picture is given by lenses whose lenses are affected by fungus or mold. Also, I did not find an indication of the country of manufacture on the lens barrel.

The parameters of the photo in the review:

All shot on Canon EOS 350D using unchipped adapter M42-Canon EOS. EGF lens on Canon 350D is 120-320mm. On-camera JPEG L, high quality. Noise reduction at slow shutter speeds was turned off. Parameters: contrast correction - 0, sharpness - 0, saturation - 0, tone color - 0. Used white balance: 'Auto' and 'Cloudy'. Photos have been scaled down to 1620px by 1080px (roughly 2MP) using FastStone Photo Resizer 3.0, and data from EXIF. When reducing the size of the photos, quality equal to 85% of the original was used, the compression method was Lanczos3.

Conclusions:

My MC Auto-Beroflex MT 1: 4,5 f = 75-200mm Macro is no good. In general, the lens is well assembled, has a weak macro mode and a flimsy built-in lens hood. Constant maximum aperture F / 4.5 does not help at all on a cloudy day.

Hello Arkady, have you ever encountered a similar lens, Polaris 80-200mm f / 3.5, or at least with this company?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Not yet encountered.

  • Boris

Thanks for the review. I expected something similar. I never put it on the CZK, but there was no such horror on the film.

  • Do_Oraemon

Arkady, a big plus for you for your performance. I myself am a blogger and know firsthand what it is to write articles regularly. Especially interesting. This is hellish labor. The fact that you are engaged in this business while being a wedding man (I have a close friend as a wedding man and I know how busy the wedding men are) makes you a great honor. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and learned a lot of useful tricks and knowledge. I want to wish you success in the future. We really need your articles. Thanks.

    • Denis

I subscribe to the above. Arkady well done! He is constantly learning and growing. “If you want to learn something, write a book about it,” says folk wisdom. Arkady writes articles (and maybe already books :)). Arkady, conduct your studies (master classes in modern fashionable language), you are given to teach. “Helping the project” gives little, and master classes (the prices are known to everyone) will allow you to save up for a Canon 5D or something else useful in a couple of days. Good luck !!!

I don’t understand why you say that the lens is terrible, in my opinion it will be good for portrait shooting, you don’t need special sharpness and contrast. Disadvantages can be made merit.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Terrible from the technical side of the final picture. Of course, you can squeeze an interesting shot from any lens, even with the MP RSFSR GLAVUCHTEHPROM Plant No. 6 77mm

  • Alexey

    Some kind of evil review.

  • Timur

The lens is actually not at all contrasty. The review is not evil, but in fact.

  • Evgeny*

appearances can be deceiving ... however

  • Dmitry

the review is really different from the ones stated above, and Arkady has never used a dry and hard text; one option was written by someone else

    • Arkady Shapoval

I think there are simply many who go too far. Review as a review.

  • Kirill

Hello Arkady, I have a question for you. I've been shooting for a couple of years now, my photos are often posted on various sites. But I have one problem, I sometimes twist colors and contrast when processing, so that the colors start to seem acidic, when I process it myself, I think that this is much better, how can you “cure” this? Or will it be threaded over time? Calibrated monitor.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The sense of color comes with time. And some photos still require acid colors.

  • Boris

Checked - the inner lens is cloudy

  • Sergei

Hello, I have such a lens / L exakta tele zoom-macro 4.5 75-200mm / filter diameter 52, Nikon mount, I did not find any information about it even on the Internet. In appearance, it is very similar to your one presented above, I haven’t tried the diaphragm with less than -32 on the camera, it’s idle. So what is my beast? thanks

Hello Arkady, I am reading your articles with great interest. And your opinion is really professional. By chance I ended up in the hands of a Japanese-made Beroflex 500 mm f / 8.0. The lens itself is cheap, about $ 100, for a 72 filter. I was very pleased with the full frame. In my opinion, it is not inferior to the analog from Nikon.
