Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC review

For the opportunity to review Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC N / AI many thanks to Klochnik Roman, who sent me him from another area.

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC review

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC review

The “Series 1” is considered by the Vivitar to be a top class lens series. The Vivitar 70-210mm f / 3.5 in my review is indeed a very good lens. My Vivitar 70-210mm f / 3.5 has a Nikon F mount and has an N / AI lettering on the lens barrel, which most likely means 'Non-AI', but in fact, my copy is AI-compatible. How to use such old lenses without autofocus is described in the section on AI-S. I used Vivitar 70-210mm F / 3.5 with my camera without any problems Nikon D700 and film Nikon AF N8008s. With a film camera, the lens gives accurate confirmation when focusing successfully, with a green dot in JVI.

Of course, the Vivitar 70-210mm F / 3.5 is 'made in Japan', the assembly of the lens at the highest level is a large kilogram piece of metal and glass. The lens uses 67 mm filters. Vivitar 70-210mm F / 3.5 has a pump-action design (to zoom you need to pull or push the zoom ring), and this is a single-ring lens. The lens has one large rubberized ring, which is designed to change the focal length of the lens and to focus. I really like single-ring lenses.

Enlightenment of the front and rear lenses of the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC lens

When focusing, the front lens of the objective both rotates and travels back and forth. But the rear lens remains stationary both when focusing and when zooming - this is very good news for people who are worried about the cleanliness of the matrix of their camera. Focus ring rotates 180 degrees. The focusing is smooth. The MDF, in normal lens operation, is 2 meters.

The lens has macro shooting mode... To enable this mode, set the focal length to 210mm and press the white button on one of the lens 'ears', then turn the ears to the left until it stops. Despite the fact that there is even a separate switch for macro, with the Vivitar 70-210mm f / 3.5 I was unable to achieve the declared magnification of 1: 2.2, so the Macro inscription in the lens name costs more 'for show'.

View of the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC lens on a Nikon camera

The Vivitar 70-210mm f / 3.5 has a pronounced VMC coating. Aperture only accepts intermediate values from F / 3.5-F / 22.0. The number of aperture blades is 6 pieces. The Vivitar 70-210mm f / 3.5 is a constant f / 3.5 zoom lens, which is only 2/3 stops smaller than f / 2.8. I even thought about replacing my Jupiter-37A 135mm F / 3.5 with this Vivitar, but I changed my mind, since Jupiter is much lighter :). This lens can even be an alternative to the 70-200 / 2.8, especially for video shooting.

Sample Photos

Everything is filmed on Nikon D700. Photos without processing, only reduced to 3 MP and imprinted data from EXIF. Vivitar 70-210mm F / 3.5 creates sharp and contrasting photos. The lens has an interesting bokeh. The vignetting of the lens is minimal. In general, this lens showed very good results.

Conclusions

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC is an excellent telezoom with constant aperture F / 3.5 and good image quality. The only pity is the macro mode is 'not real' and there is no internal focusing, otherwise this Vivitar is very good.

On Radozhiv there was another review of such a lens MC Vivitar 70-210mm 1: 4.5 Macro Focusing Zoom.

  • Yur @} ------->

Nutrition to the author of the article. About scanning plіvok.
Honestly, I myself am sniffing at the water, thinking that the quality of the scan is so hungry - for the crooked hands of the photo labs. That is now a bachu, which I scanned at home as well with traces of fig-meaning to go (dirty… I don’t know, honestly, well). With friends (with negatives) - good pictures, with scanned ones - online. Do you know what it’s like, where does it lie (you know, you’re scanning at home)?

  • Yur @} ------->

And one more thing: Arkadiy, it’s not visible on your photos and it’s not indicated in the article, it’s up to you to limp .. (?)

    • Not arkady

On an open diaphragm, it is very chromate.

  • Bkrg

I received one from the USA today.
On the macro account: “To enable this mode, set the focal length to 210mm and press the white button on one of the lens 'ears', then turn the tabs to the left until they stop,” and then RETURN to a focal length of 70mm. Then everything will work.

  • Paul

I got this lens, 410 UAH. True, without the ability to switch to macro mode - this did not bother me :)
So, I tried to shoot with Canon 600D, the quality in general, in my opinion, is solid 4. It is difficult to focus on the sharpness, there is a slight infinity flight. Heavy:)

Being forced by an advanced amateur, I have very warm feelings for this lens.
In addition to Vivitar, there are six more lenses in my arsenal:
    - Nikon 28-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF
    - Nikon 35-70mm f / 2.8 AF
    - Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF
    - Nikon 85mm f / 1.8D AF
    - Nikon 105mm f / 2.5 AI
    - Nikon 135mm f / 2.8 AI

So, after careful reflection and multiple checks, I came to the conclusion that Vivitar shows itself better than anyone else on the set in the park, in the forest, in the garden, etc. I could not achieve such juiciness and contrast with any of Nikonov. But only in good daylight.
I have a Nikon D90, and in the city a wild increase in focal length becomes very specific and inconvenient, and in the fields and forests it does not matter anymore. The main thing is to have a solid hand :).

MC KIRON ZOOM 4.5 / 70-210mm - who knows what this lens model is? Is this not the same Vivitar hour? There is so little information about this lens, even on foreign forums ... (

    • anonym

No, Vivitar has the same lens made in Kiron, with the same parameters 3,5.70-210. But Vivitar will be written on it.

    good afternoon
Please tell me, I choose between auto zoom multi coated 1: 4.0 and Vivitar 70-210mm 1: 3,5 MC Macro Focusing Zoom which is better. For the price the difference is not big.

    already sold.

    • Igor_K

It is a pity that I did not have time! You had a fairly rare version, which is highly praised in many reviews. I have a "Tokin" version of this lens, which I'm quite happy with, but you always hope that the next one can be even better. Creative search however!

      • Dmitriy

Did Tokinivka vivitar compare with Jupiter 37a?

        • Igor_K

Compared, although this is not a correct comparison of the Zannar fix and 3x zoom. on the open J37 (I have the MC version) a little sharper, a little richer and more contrasting. The bokeh of the U-37 is a little tougher. Vivitar has its own advantages, his picture, in my opinion, is more suitable for a woman's portrait, the colors are more pastel, the contrast is slightly less. The disadvantages of Vivitar, I would attribute the lack of aperture half-stops, you have to set “4” without clicking, since the distance between “3,5” and “5,6” is enough, but you need to make sure that the ring does not “slide out”. At the long end, at the open end, it is soft and chromatite, at 150mm everything is fine, at 70mm - a razor. Wonderfully detaches the object from the background even at considerable distances. Microcontrast in comparison with the Kironov one, at the long end is weaker, it is much worse adapted to the macro than the 1st version, but better than Jupiter. Bokeh is the proprietary "Tokin" one, very much like it, but personally I am quite satisfied with the "Kironov-Hollywood" “Nuts”. In general, the 1st and 2nd versions are completely different lenses with very different pictures. Kiron is bright, saturated and contrasting, while Tokina is pastel, plastic and portrait. But the 2nd version is noticeably lighter and smaller in size. Personally, with the acquisition of another Vivitar zoom, I stopped using Jupiter-37, namely “Vivitar macro focusing zoom 70-150 \ 3,8” (from Kiron), and if we compare the zooms with the Yu-37, then it is him. Although it is not a proud series "1" (although there is one with an aperture ratio of 3,5), it will easily "fit" both the 1st and 2nd versions, and the Yu-37 in addition, according to the combination of the picture, price and dimensions, it has one drawback - it is quite rare, if you get it, buy it without hesitation, you will not regret it! But the review is not about him, and for example I will add a test from Tokin's 70-210 \ 3,5. Filmed at 210mm, aperture 3,5, on-camera jeep.

          • Igor_K

For a more complete presentation, the same test scene at “5,6”, focal length 210mm, sharpness “5”, saturation and contrast “+1”, camera D300s, on-camera jpeg. Who needs rabbits, write, I will shoot and send.

            • Igor_K

And this is an example from my favorite “Vivitar 70-150 mm MC Macro Focusing Zoom 1: 3,8”, which I mentioned in the previous comment. FR 150mm, aperture “4”, camera settings are similar to the previous ones.

              • Rodion

                It doesn't look like F / 4 - concrete nuts. This is clearly 5.6 or less ...

              • Igor_K

                For Rodion
As for the pronounced nuts, this is how they look, even at “4”. The design of this lens is such that at the first shift of the aperture ring from “3,8” to “4”, the petals - noticeably protrude in this way, and form clearly distinguishable “nuts”, also of irregular shape. At the same time, the very design of the drive is in the worst "Vivitar-Kiron" traditions, as one of the users very accurately described: ... "simply - the choice of the most complex design possible", local kulibins cannot be replaced, but you are far away. But, I'm used to his nuts, and I consider this "side" to be his "trademark". It's just that when you wear a “full-scale” zoom like 80-200 \ 2,8 in a wardrobe trunk, or the same Kironov's 70-210 \ 3,5, but in the summer heat, and after a heart attack, the “nuts” in the box begin to round up strongly, as for me personally! But you have to shoot at 4-ke, as at 3,8, it is soft, and HA are present. “Favorite” I have for its versatility, weight, price, and at the same time, quite suitable “vintage” picture. If you are interested, I can "jot down" his tests for you by mail. I'll add the test on the open.

Hello Igor. I read your article about 70-150 Vivitar. There is Jupiter-37a and helios 81n. But they are “short.” I want this on Nikon D200. I want to take with the initial numbers 2222? from copy to copy? andrii2802@mail.ru

  • Sergei 02

    Good luck in finding!

  • Ivan

As it turned out, under the 3.5 hole there are 2 versions of the lens.
    http://www.techtheman.com/2008/11/comparing-vivitar-series-1-70-210mm.html
    in this review
    from Kiron - 1 version.
    From Tokina -2 version

    • Ivan

Nobody used the Tokin version? I wonder how this glass works ..

      • Ivan

        Great V2 glass from Tokina.

  • Shadow

Hello dear experts. How does this Vivitar series1 behave on crop? How sharp, contrast? Is there vignetting, HA and all other nasty things. I want to “see” a little further than Jupiter 37a. I want this on Nikon D200.

    • zengarden

Vivitar'ov are many varieties, moreover, from different manufacturers; so you need to watch a specific instance. I have a 70-210mm, but not the same as in the review; and it's not so hot - the contrast is weak, lathers at the far end. How lucky :)

      • Alex

On the long end always soap or in certain cases? I bought the 3rd version (Komine) today. If you focus on the open at the maximum focal length of 10 meters and beyond, then the sharpness of the picture is very lacking.

    • Rodion

I have one. At the far end, a vignette is felt. HA is also available.
      Maximum sharpness at F / 5.6-F / 8, but in principle F / 4 is already more than.
F / 3.5 is great for portraits and nature photography.
Birds can be fished with f / 4 and 210 mm.
      Contrast is not the worst.

      • Shadow

Hello! How much will it cost?

        • Rodion

And where did you get the idea that I am selling it?
You asked how Vivitar behaves. I wrote.

  • Vyacheslav

Hello, hello. Can you compare Vivitar 70-150 mm MC Macro Focusing Zoom 1: 3,8 and Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1: 3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom VMC from Tokina? If possible, reset the photo with a 150mm FR, 3,8 aperture and 210mm FR, 3,5 aperture vakula99@mail.ru.

    good afternoon
Maybe off topic, but I would like to ask if anyone can help or advise what to do. I bought a vivitar series 1 35-85mm on ebay. but the fact is that the focus ring does not spin. and I don’t find anywhere on the Internet how to repair. Only a little zoom works on the lens, but the focus does not spin. honestly dismantled but still did not work. I tried to remove the glass as described here, but it does not work. (http://forum.mflenses.com/dismantling-vivitar-series-1-35-85mm-2-8-t28993.html).
I bought optics and do not want to throw it away.
    Thanks in advance

  • Dmitriy

    Good afternoon, Arkady!
Tell me, is it worth buying this lens if you already have Jupiter-37A 3.5 135?
Give advice, as give inexpensively and the state of the new in the kit.

    Thank you for your reply!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Do not be.

      • Dmitriy

        Arkady, thanks for the answer!
even because of its zoom is not worth taking?

        • Rodion

I took it for the sake of 200 mm and for the macro mode - a pretty good thing. A tolerable telephoto camera with a beautiful picture.

          • Dmitriy

            Rodion, thanks for the answer!
            Now the question is to take Vivitar or Nikon Zoom-Nikkor * With Auto 1: 4.5 f = 80-200mm (PRE-AI).
What do you think, what to take?

            • Rodion

              Lord, of course Vivitar.

              • Dmitriy

                Rodion, thank you!

Take this one, the one that AF - it seems to work on a battery)))) AF is tricky there ...

  • Alexander

Vivitar 70-210 got it, how to make friends with MFT 4/3? Where to buy an adapter, and which one?
    Tell me !!!

    • Rodion

You should have known his mount before buying and, as a consequence, which adapter to buy)

  • Alexander

the purchase was fleeting, whether to take it or not ...
what appears before, the lens or adapter does not affect the photo))

  • oldlens

You can buy this lens here. https://vk.com/oldlens

  • Slayer

And you can add photos with a minimum focal length and maximum to all reviews about telephoto lenses. And if the lens has a constant RF, then the photo without a lens (on the phone, for example), supposedly to compare :))

  • Sergey Palander

    Thanks for the review!
Largely thanks to him, he added to his line of lenses)
I bought with an adapter for Canon for 55 euros in my city.

Macro of course laughter) better on Helios-44 add a macro ring;)
Focusing is smooth, does not move out, as I read from someone ... you can safely shoot both up and down
Heavy ... won't he rip off the fasteners on the carcass?
And also the impression that if he falls ... then he will kill himself, with his weight))
although I met on ebay and beaten, but they write that everything is in order;)

It would be a little easier and would put 10 out of 10, so - 9 use 1 day) bought yesterday :)

Dear Arkady and readers, I have a question about this lens. I got it in a killed state, for a penny, to play with; I cleaned it out, re-glued two glues on a damp transparent epoxy. After assembly, the picture is straightforward, "light", with an open one ... but if I achieve infinity at the long end, then at the short end it is necessary to turn the ring another quarter of a turn, should it be so? or did I assemble it incorrectly? information came across the net that the lens is almost parafocal, where is the catch? Thanks in advance!)
