Review Porst Weitwinkel 1: 3.5 / 35mm VB

The Porst Weitwinkel 35 / 3.5 sent to me is badly frayed and has a dent on the rim near the front lens. The owner purchased it for $ 30 Perhaps it is precisely because of these 'battle wounds' that the lens lost some of its optical quality. This instance is converted to a Nikon F mount with the ability to focus on infinity, however, when focusing on infinity, the rear lens of the lens catches the mirror of my camera Nikon D700... On Nikon DX cameras, due to the smaller size of the mirror, there are no problems with “clinging”.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

Enlightenment of the front lens of the Porst Weitwinkel 35 / 3.5 lens and aperture view

Enlightenment of the front lens of the Porst Weitwinkel 35 / 3.5 lens and aperture view

The lens focuses smoothly, the focusing ring is rubberized and rotates only 90 degrees. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk is slightly lengthened, while the entire inner lens unit of the lens moves. MDF is 50 cm, usually much smaller for wide-angle lenses. The lens has a depth-of-field scale with an infrared shift mark. The Porst Weitwinkel 35 / 3.5 has rings for setting and presetting aperture. The diaphragm control rings are inconveniently located, as they rotate, they cling to each other. The number of diaphragm blades is 6 pieces. With the aperture preset ring, the lens iris can be adjusted smoothly, without clicks or fixed intermediate values. The aperture closes to a maximum of f / 16. The lens is lightweight, compact, well assembled, the case has the inscription 'Made in Japan'.

Sample Photos

The Porst Weitwinkel 1: 3.5 / 35mm VB has a weak enlightenment and in the backlight the lens can create strong glare in the photo. I was glad that the distortion is very small, in JVI the curvature of straight lines is almost imperceptible. The lens has f / 3.5 vignetting on my full frame camera. Sharpness, as for a fix, could be better, especially since the lens uses a small maximum aperture of F / 3.5. Fully closed at f / 16, on my camera Nikon D700, image sharpness is very weak. I do not know what the letters VB mean in the designation of the lens, maybe someone will tell me in the comments.

Everything is filmed on Nikon D700, on-camera JPEG, NL image management mode.

Conclusions:

Porst Weitwinkel 1: 3.5 / 35mm VB is a weak, wide-angle, old lens for film cameras.

Thanks for the review! A review of n8008s will be?))) Well, at least a little one;)

    • Arkady Shapoval

As an exception, I am collecting photographs from him, I will do a review.

  • sergey

Thank you for your reviews, I always read them with great interest,
I immediately apologize for the arrogance, but if suddenly you do not have anything to write about, please write how it works and whether it is worth using the “Active D-Lighting” function.

  • Igor

Thanks for the review! The last photo shows that the lens is very soapy at the edges.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is logical, because the sharpness passes in the middle of the house, and the front and back of the house go to the front focus and the focus, this photo is not taken parallel to the plane of the house :)

Thanks for the review, it’s really interesting to read the opinion of a knowledgeable person.
On my own I note that the lens copes very well with portraits, which cannot be said about landscapes, due to its “soapiness”.

Any 8.0 lens will have very high sharpness. But on the open end, not everyone has it.
