Review Tair-33 4.5 / 300

For the ability to view the lens Tair-33 4.5/300 Many thanks to Igor Tihan.

Review Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Review Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Tair-33 is a medium format lens for B and C mount cameras. Usually Tair-33 with 'B' mount from 'Kiev-88' and 'Salut' cameras go without the letter 'B' in the name, and for 'Kiev-60' cameras with 'B' mount (aka Pentacon Six) in the name lens add the letter 'B'. The lens is available in classic black (as in this review) and zebra frames.

Type of enlightenment Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Type of enlightenment Tair-33 4.5 / 300

My lens has a 'B' mount. How to use Soviet old lenses on modern Nikon cameras read here, and on Canon here. Tair-33 has a narrow-film younger twin brother Tair-3 4.5/300... The main difference between Tair-3 and Tair-33 is that Tair-33 can operate on medium format cameras with a 6X6 frame size, while Tair-3 is designed for narrow format 35mm film. In this regard, the lenses have different resolution, Tair-3 is sharper than its 'older brother' Tair-33. Tair-33 also has a larger front lens diameter and a slightly different optical design of 4 lenses in 3 groups.

Lens aperture Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Lens aperture Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Tair 33 is big and heavyweighs almost 2 kilograms. When I shot at Tair-33, the weight of the lens served as a stabilizer. It's nice that using such a telephoto lens, trembling in the viewfinder is almost not noticeable. Typically, lightweight 300mm lenses make me very nervous about shaking pictures in the optical viewfinder when shooting with my hands, especially on cropped cameras. It’s not worth worrying about the fact that the lens can snatch out the camera mount. There is a tripod socket on the lens, though the old large diameter thread is used for a tripod.

Focus distance scale Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Focus distance scale Tair-33 4.5 / 300

Focusing on the lens is very smooth, the focus ring rotates 360 degrees. The focus ring is wide, metal. When focusing, the trunk lengthens by about 5 cm. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate. The minimum focusing distance is 3 meters. The diameter of the front lens is simply huge, it is already 88mm.

Black Tair-33 at the modern central defense complex

Black Tair-33 at the modern central defense complex

My copy (black, Arsenal factory) has 15 aperture blades (although there is information about 16 petal options). The diaphragm petals are metallic, located immediately behind the first front group of lenses. The lens has an aperture setting and preset ring. The diaphragm control ring is wide and easy to use. On the lens, you can set any F value from F / 4.5 to F / 22.0. The diaphragm preset ring has a small special protrusion for ease of use.

Sample Photos

Despite the single-layer enlightenment, the lens tolerates backlight quite well, even if you shoot against the sun, it’s very difficult to catch glare. But the contrast of the lens suffers a little. Strong at F / 4.5 chromatic aberration, and in the blur zone there is a bright freezing (color of contrasting details in green and purple). Sample photos on Nikon D700 without processing, on this camera I used Tair-33 with an adapter KP-88 / N.

Sample photos on Canon 350D. EGF on cropped Canon 350D is already 480mm. On Canon 350D I used Tair-33 with adapters KP-88 / N + Nikon Canon EOS. Sample photos without processing.

Personal impressions

There are not so many Tair lenses. I have never seen a single medium format lens with a classic lens design longer than 300mm; of such Soviet optics Tair-33 is the longest lens for medium format. The lens has a very interesting design. With a 300mm focal length and aperture of F / 4.5, and even with a 3-meter MDF, the lens blurs the distant plan very much. Tair-33 is interesting for photo experiments.

Conclusions:

Tair-33 is a unique medium format telephoto lens. Has a nice bokeh pattern. True, Tair-33 weighs over 1700 grams. If there is no fear of the large weight of the lens, then the Tair-33 can be used for leisurely photography of distant objects, especially if you use a tripod.

Very interesting! Thanks for the review.
How do you think it normally resolves the D700 matrix (it’s kind of not a picky in terms of optics)?
Why I ask, because his narrow-format brother is not very comfortable focusing (if you take from a sniper kit). Yes, and take the whole set of sniper because of one lens, I didn’t wash off, spend extra guildans)))
By the way, my examples with 3C (do not scold much for development))):

the taste and color, as they say ...
to me personally, the originality of focusing Tair 3C seemed very ergonomic and convenient - during the shooting, my hands practically do not get tired, which cannot be said about shooting with an old 300mm tamron, which is 2-2,5 times lighter

    • Victor

Yes, a colleague, you have a super autumn. damn well, just Pushkin’s autumn. I’m capturing, I like to look at the starry sky. oncoming waves, bonfire flame and someone else's work (just kidding) Tell me if I have time: I want tair 33 for kenon 650 for several at once but I write that the bayonet is redone on m 42. and will it work ??? thanks

      • finch

Usually, converting a mount on a T33 to an M42 consists in installing adapter rings, and this does not mean mechanical alteration of the lens' tail. Will the lens with the M42 tail work on your kenon - xs ... I have to turn the diaphragm in the manul mode on the carcass and in the manul mode.

        • Artem

Moreover, the priority of the diaphragm will work ... I'm not sure about infinitely

      • Sergei

I used Tair 33B to Kenon 600d, he replaced MTO 500 for the moon’s seed, evening photos come out very well, with ISO 200. Alteration: Medium Macro-ring m-42

Sorry for commenting not on the topic of the article, but I thought about information about the site - it's a pity that you can't mark your favorite photos. An article can be marked once, although you reread it more than once (it is because of this that there may be a large imbalance in the number of views and “likes” of certain articles). But you have no shortage of good photos)) not just good ones, but which I sincerely want to note, share on the network. If it is possible, I just didn’t find it ... If such a function can be done, it would be great, and it’s good for the site's rating, I think.

  • Vitaly Romas

    Thank you!

  • Arkady Shapoval

    What are you talking about?

    • Alexey

About his moronity. Never mind. Good luck to you.

  • Gregory

Great review and good photo. PS Do not pay attention to the fuckers

    • pilotkins

      +100500 :)))))

  • Dmitriy

And if the lens is from medium format, then you do not need to recalculate the focal length to a full frame?

    • Andrei

Dmitry, I will be responsible for Arkady), the focal length is not recounted, it never changes, just like the lens aperture. These are the lens parameters that do not depend on what the image will be focused on, the viewing angle changes.

  • Andrei

Arkady, this is a good lens in terms of obtaining an artistic picture! The fact that there are chromatic aberrations is not scary, you can avoid certain scenes, but in the editor edit.
At the expense of photo evaluation functions - I am totally against it! They will crawl out all sorts of dolbaks, "teachers", etc. and evaluate according to not clear what criteria they have ...

    Sincerely, Andrey Abramov.

  • Denis

Haha, and someone somewhere for these pictures demanded 3 bucks? Well, you, dear, have divorced, we are here to watch all these pictures for free.

  • Dmitriy

Andrei, I’m chalk in view of how the conversion to EFR is with crop. After all, a medium format lens forms an image so that the frame is inscribed in a circle. A full frame can be considered crop from the medium format. So? EGFs are used after all to represent the viewing angle. So this question interests me) only to understand how it works)

    • Arkady Shapoval

EGF is connected precisely with a 35mm film (full format) so that it is clear what viewing angle the lens forms. At full frame, the viewing angle will be like a regular 300mm lens, its EGF and FR will be 300mm. On the crop there will be Kf * 300mm, for example, on the Nikon DX it will be 450mm. But on a medium format, this lens will give a wider viewing angle than on a narrow film (including full format), and its EGF for a 35mm film will be approximately 150mm, since Kf is less than unity. That’s the whole secret.

Thank you Arkady !!! I am a Finance Analyst. already a hobby beginner amateur. For 4-5 months I have been following Radozhiva reviews. I bought all my photo accessories after discussing a particular camera on this site. Good luck to all amateur photographers

  • Glory

    Hello.
Arkady is probably a fan of intrigue, this can be seen in many of his photos of the tested lenses (either you don’t look at the connecting shanks, then the diaphragms shine like mirrors and the shape of the petals is not visible, etc.).
I’ll tell you about my Tair-33B 1974 lens. release (potential buyers advice from their own experience: do not waste your time and pick up copies only among Tairov-33B with serial numbers up to 100, if you have such an opportunity).
It has a regular, blackened diaphragm and amber enlightenment (note when selecting: not purple, blue, or raspberry).
I chose it more than once, sorting out between the Tair-33, Tair-33V, Tair-33, Tair-33 “zebra”, which turned out to be low-resolution and with yellow lenses, and there’s more than enough mechanical defect. So, only the Tair-33B modification has sharpening higher than that of Tairov-3 (although the directories indicate the opposite, Tair-3 is sharper), it has smooth focusing and amber lens illumination (without such enlightenment, the colors of the picture are very dull, but for black -white photo work any enlightenment is good!).
I did not notice any chromatic aberrations, let alone a freiguring. Contrasting enough (even without a hood, just not in a backlight). In short, Tair-3a after him is like a log in his hands, and for Tair-3 (the one that Brussels saw), a very long hood is needed (native - just drive off flies, only a homemade 20 cm hood saves!), Otherwise the contrast is unprecedented.
To summarize: from the Soviet optics of Tair-33B, exclusively for thoughtful color photographs (primarily for the medium frame, and then for the small format and cropped matrices). And for photography hunting, so to speak “through the forests, through the fields, through the swamps”, the exclusively “Brussels” Tair-3 is suitable, it is very lightweight, and it’s not a shame to show your 20cm hoods to the birds :-).

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the info. I am not a fan of intrigue, the review always says which thread or mount.

    • finch

very interesting and original opinion on all points - from intrigue to 33вс3 :-).
on comparisons - in view of the passage of a certain amount of time from the date of manufacture of the mentioned lenses, comparable to the age of some of those who write here, I have to say the following - the state and assessment of sharpness with the contrast of Soviet glasses must be made individually for everyone. The assertion that some objective of one modification is better than another, another modification is fundamentally wrong. On this issue, I directly have the experience of comparing Tair 3T (Brussels) and Nikkor 70-300 AF VR, in which this instance of Tair did not yield to Nikkor. It is especially funny to read about the "best numbers" - this "idiot" has long been wandering the web.
Summary - do not be misled about the modifications and numbers, try it yourself, make comparative tests when buying and only make decisions based on their results.

  • Gennady S

Tell me which adapter you need to find for TAIR 33 to attach to the KANON EOS 650D?

  • Alexey

Shoveled the whole sai, it seems to me, maybe I’m stupid somewhere, but I didn’t find the information how to fasten the taiz-33 and tair-3 to Canon, poke if it’s not difficult to link me to the link, maybe there will be clarifications about my 70D camera
    Thank you in advance.

  • Igor

Hello, Tell me where you can buy adapters to Tair-33 on the canon 600d.

  • Ilya

    Hello, man offers tair 33.
Geographically far from me, he himself, according to him, does not understand photo matters, says that the lens is wound up at the zenith e, i.e. M42, he checked. How can this be? Only if there is an adapter on the lens, right?

    • Oleg

on tair 33 you need a pentacon six adapter. On the M42 it is for Tair 3. I myself encountered this problem when I bought this lens. By the way, the adapter cost me 450 UAH. keep that in mind.

    • Oleg

before buying this miracle, look at my review. This is a controversial purchase.
      http://olegasphoto.com.ua/index.php/tair-33v-300mm-4-5/

      • Arkady Shapoval

You have another option in the review, such as a zebra.

      • Denis

        Guys, tell me please.
        I have a Tair 3t with a non-standard threaded mount.
        How to remake it?
What kind of mount can it be?

        • Rodin

This is either a C-mount or an OST-19. Saw him all the excess from the tail and fasten the M42.

  • Sasha

    Tair 33 on canon 650d

  • Sasha

    Tair 33

  • Alexey

I bought Tahir 33 with B mount. Now I don’t know what to do with it. 85 bucks common sense does not allow to give for an adapter on Nikon.

    • Jury

Sell and buy Tair 3 with a shank A, on which it is easy to put a cheap adapter on the M42 or Nikon (KP-A / N) while maintaining infinity. Tair 3 and is sold with one of these adapters, as a rule. $ 85 is a serious price, before they asked about 40-50, given that Tair 3 costs $ 40.

    • Pastor

The price is really serious. Look in your region for a nikon adapter. I have just two Tair-3s, one with an M-42, one with a Nikon mount, I think I will sell one of them. If you were in Tver, you could choose which one you like live, but I believe you are from another region. With Nikon bayonet mounts are not often found, but for 5500, which is the cost of an adapter, it can be found already together with an adapter :) Successful searches.

      • Alexey

Thanks for the advice. But somehow he did not want to part with this telescope. In fact, she fell to my soul. Actually, I bought a lens with a case and two filters for 45 bucks. 85 bucks - dandelion adapter. There is another option, but it is even more suicidal. adapters from arax. C on B + B on Nikon. It generally goes over 100-plus bucks.

        • Yuriy

Look at this site reviews of Soviet medium format glass, in one of them (I don’t remember which one) I recently described how to make the adapter myself, there’s an article about this on the Internet.

  • Alexey

Are you talking about the option of cutting the back cover and then screwing in the screws? frankly, I'm afraid that the lens on such a mount will not last long + there may be problems with infinity, or am I wrong?

    • Yuriy

If you are talking about a plastic back cover, then no :), I saw such an adapter, you can’t put glass on it

      • Alexey

I found and downloaded the amateur photographer magazine for 1989 with drawings of the adapter. But this also will not help me in any way, because no one will mess with one detail.

  • Tahir (my real name)

Ahahah, now everything is clear with me)

  • Alexey

In general, the lens is not bad, but you can’t shoot the birds on it. Focusing and zoom go a little tight, the weight does not make it hold the camera, but the lens itself. An additional joke is that the tripod thread on the camera turned out to be smaller in diameter than on the lens. With hands removes soapy at maximum zoom, with a slight haze. At first, I had to look for an adapter for Nikon from B mount. In the end, I bought a homemade one for 700UAH (the cheapest that I found). Additional filters of yellow and orange colors do not find my application, but it is a pity to throw out (maybe I’ll still torment and sell this miracle).

  • Ahmed

I sold this “C” at the beginning of the summer (money was needed). Due to chromaticism and frigging, I gave out abalden watercolors. Compared to meyer (I have 300mm / 4), of course it is inferior, but if possible I will buy it again

  • Alex

I have tair 33 with mount B, at work I asked to carve an adapter with a three-way thread on the m42, I take pictures on the KenD 1200D without problems, though due to a little negligence it happens that the infinity stops, who are interested, some just attach the eos m42 adapter to the back of the lens and use it.

  • Igor

Guys, good time, and what can you advise from the old Soviet optics for pictures at the greatest distance. So that the lens can be mounted on a DSLR and the lens itself was still available for sale at flea markets. It is very necessary for work. Thanks.
