In short

SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN - an old classic 7-aperture lens on the Planar 6/XNUMX scheme. Can serve as a good and inexpensive creative lens these days.

From previous version Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN (production code 37902, indicated on the MAN./AUTO switch) model SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN (from this review) features an updated SMC enlightenment.

Unlike the previous version of the lens and / or the SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 enlightenment does not turn yellow over time, or turns yellow much less pronounced, which makes it easy to use the lens without color distortion.

Lens hood Threaded, screwed into the front filter thread
Manufacturer country LENS MADE IN JAPAN (lens made in Japan)
Period From 1972 to 1975. Later it was replaced by the SMC PENTAX 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT version. CO., JAPAN
Price About 80 cu for used option.

Prices for modern Pentax lenses can be viewed here.

SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN well assembled, has metal case. The focus ring has a rubberized insert, but the rubber feels like plastic to the touch (it may have become rusty from time to time). The focus ring rotates approximately 180 degrees. The ring travel is smooth and pleasant. For many Takumars, the smoothness of focusing is one of the best among all lenses of the past era. The original front cover without latches, just snug against the frame of the case, it can easily be removed with a random movement.

During focusing, the front retractable body does not rotate. Focusing occurs by moving the entire lens block.

SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4/50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN

Manual Takumaras with M42 x 1 / 45.5 thread can be divided into 4 types:

  1. Completely manual (in terms of installation exposure) Only one aperture control ring. Everything is done manually.
  2. Pre-set. Also manual (in terms of installation exposure), but with two aperture rings: settings and presets. Everything is done manually.
  3. Semi-automatic. Aperture ring + protrusion (pin) for the diaphragm pusher + can be an M / A diaphragm operation mode switch (Man./Auto). In automatic mode, focus is achieved with the aperture fully open. During shutter release, the aperture closes to the desired value and opens again. Exposure set manually.
  4. Fully automatic. Aperture ring + aperture mode switch + protrusion for the diaphragm pusher + additional protrusion (pin) + additional leash for transferring the aperture value to the camera. Measurement exposure and focusing is carried out with the aperture fully open, the camera understands the value of the set aperture and sets the exposure corresponding to it. During shutter release, the aperture closes to the desired value and opens again.

On the bayonet side of fully automatic lenses such as the SMC TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN from this review, there is an additional very small pinwhich is associated with the MAN./AUTO (looks like this, at number 2) This pin should not be confused with a conventional pin to automatically set the desired aperture value during shutter release. The MAN./AUTO switch only works when this pin is pressed, for example, when the lens is mounted on the camera, or when the rear protective cover that holds it in place is installed. There is no need to try to change the position of the MAN./AUTO switch by force, otherwise it may cause a malfunction.

In the review, I had several of these lenses with varying degrees of integrity and security. One of them was slightly redone for better compatibility with Canon cameras, namely, the protruding lever of the aperture leash was cut off.

Comments: 103, on the topic: Overview of the SMC Takumar 1: 1.4 / 50 Asahi OPT. CO., Japan

  • Wade

Lead container and there is no problem when carrying through the frame.

    • Rodion

The container itself will then be of more interest to the lens.

  • Wade

    That's right.

  • Simon

For a long time I peered at the pictures presented to see why this fifty-kopeck piece was elevated to holiness ... The people are blindly devout ...

  • PhotoBlackSmith

thanks for the great reviews - found a lot of useful
it would be great to add valuable information from the comments to the article as well

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good. But she already is in the comments.

      • sierra

Hi Arkady. What can you say briefly if you compare it with Jupiter-3?

        • Rodion

This is a comparison with a hedgehog, but the takumar is darker in T-feet (if you do not dance with UV radiation), put on a mirror and, most likely, sharper. And Jupiter-3 is more compact on the BZK, but has more MDF (1 m), a more beautiful diaphragm, a more interesting (IMHO) pattern, better color (no yellowness of thorium glass) and, most likely, lighter than takumara by t-stops (but in general it is so-so on light transmission too).

  • Viking

Excellent glass, was the owner of this. At the airport, a phonet is framed! Be careful, it was the SMC version that ran into this. An employee took my bag and walked again 3 times, out of these 3 times the frame booed 1 time. After conferring, they still let me in, on the way back I handed over the glass in baggage from sin.

  • Eugene

He flew overseas with the SMC version twice. To Vietnam and Bali. I always checked it in - there were no problems.
Although I know that my lens is phonetically tight at the rear lens with a 30-fold excess of the background norm.

    • Passed by .......

Zhen well, about 30 times you really reassured yourself…. A dosimeter for 100ue will not tell you the whole truth. Look vidyuhi - there are a great many of them. There, everyone has their own conditions, but a general rule for everyone. This is a muzzle directed into the eye from the side of the rear lens. And how will your eye and your brain react to a point bombardment by photons, do you know?)))

      • zengarden

If you close your eyes to the back of the lens and leave it overnight, then there’s probably nothing useful. Everything else is children's horror stories.

        • Rodion

          Of course :)

      • Rodion

Thank you, yelled with "point bombardment of photons")))

  • Pavel Gorbunov

Hello everyone, I am raising the topic.

I had SMC (the number started at 76, I sold), the phonol was at the peak of 19 μSv / h (1,9 mR / h).
In a year, if you continuously wear it on yourself, pressing the back lens to the body, you could grab 16,6 R.
The rayon starts from 100 R, so wearing it is not to carry it continuously for 6 years)))
This is about "Fukushima in your pocket", everyone draws conclusions himself.

Recently I bought another SMC in a new state, even with my own covers, No. 6600418.
This phonite at the peak is almost 3 times smaller than the previous one, only 7 μSv / h.
Sharp open, almost no software, colorful, plastic ...

I give 3 examples of full size, the first shot is Ø1,4, the second is 2,8, the third is 4.

    Enjoy it!

    • Denis

100R is probably the total dose that a person can withstand with uniform irradiation. at once. however, for 6 years you can probably withstand 500R, I don't remember the numbers from the lessons of civil defense ...
if you direct the radiation somewhere at one point, then obviously this will kill much faster

      • Pavel Gorbunov

The radioactivity of Takumarov and other luminous lenses can only be a problem at the airport. But I'm not going to carry my SMC Tak with Boeing))

        • Trueash

As one understanding video blogger says, a radioactive lens will only harm if it is crushed and eaten: D

  • koba

Takumers with the designation SMC ... are no longer radioactive, the thorium glasses in them have been replaced with lanthanum glasses. The first version (with 8 elements) was also non-radioactive.

    • Rodion

Not true. Without thorium, the lenses are only in the first eight-lens and in the last (it seems, also eight-lens) versions. Two SMC versions were with thorium.

      • Alex

Only the first version has 8 lenses, and only there is no thorium in it. This is what is reliably known. Perhaps thorium has ceased to be used in the last batches of the 4th version, but this is just a guess, my lens of the 4th version with thorium, because the rear lens is already brownish.

  • Jury

Arkady, tell me please. What analogue can be considered instead of this lens? To make the images more or less similar in design and quality. Thank!

    • B. R. P.

I wonder what Arkady will answer you. And what does not suit this one?

      • Jury

In principle, the question about analogs arose because of the words of Arkady (not a quote) that this lens does not need to be specially “chased”. I fully share this point of view, especially taking into account the radioactivity of individual versions.

    • Rodion

Yes, in general, all 50 / 1.4 old ones are pretty similar to each other in the picture. Takumar, however, is almost the best of them. Is that the Planar 50 / 1.4 itself is more interesting in the picture, be guided by it.

      • Jury

        Thank you!

    • Alexey

and it depends on which camera - DSLR or EVIL :)

      • Rodion

As if you can find an analogue by the picture, which will be incompatible with DSLRs ... Anything that does not sit on DSLRs because of the cut - a little different will be in the nature of the image.

        • Alexey

for example, minolta rockcor - it will not stand on DSLRs without a cut. I shot on it, just pressing it against the mount - it was sharp with an open one.

  • Rodion

Out of interest, I looked at the parameters of a typical thorium glass in patents. You know, today it would be called High Refractive Index (n> 1.8) and Low Dispersion (v> 50) ... Thorium glasses as minimkm are no worse than the STK-9 lanthanum crown produced today. So - are there any special elements in takumara?)
