Canon 20D Review

For the opportunity 20D body camera review many thanks to Mikhail Rybak, who sent me him from another area.

Canon 20D Review

Canon 20D Review

Canon 20D is one of the first advanced consumer digital SLR cropped cameras Canon. The Canon 20D is now the 'old lady', as it was released back in the fall of 2004 and cannot boast of anything special. Canon 20D looks very similar to its ancestor Canon 10D and to a newer version Canon 30D. True, unlike Canon 10DThe Twenty supports Canon EF and EF-S lenses.

Canon 20D uses 8.2 megapixel CMOS matrix that allows you to take pictures of 3504 X 2336 pixels. The exact same matrix is used by the more modern model - Canon 30D. Eight megapixels is enough for simple photo tasks, I advise you to look in the section Battle of Megapixels.

Canon 20D can use ISO 100 to 1600 up to ISO 3200 (ISO H). The Canon 20D doesn't boast of low noise at high ISOs these days, and ISO 1600 itself is not considered that high these days. In the camera settings, you can only set the values ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, ISO H, without intermediate values. In program modes, the camera uses automatic ISO selection, which is limited to an extremely narrow range - between ISO 100 and 400.

Canon 20D has very small 1.8 inch display. Viewing captured photos on it is very difficult. The display is more suitable for navigating the camera menu. The camera menu itself is simple, it is easy to understand. Unlike the older Canon 10D, a menu in Russian appeared in the Canon 20D.

Canon 20D has 9 focus pointsof which only one, central, is cruciform. A huge number of Canon cameras use the same focusing system. On the camera you can find the connectors: USB 2.0, video output, output for the remote control and PC Sync output for studio flashes. The good news is that the camera has a very short minimum shutter speed equal to 1 / 8000 seconds.

The Canon 20D has pleasant ergonomics, it is not difficult to operate the camera. I want to note optional monochrome display with yellow backlight. The display greatly simplifies the work. The camera lies well in the hand, the grip is rubberized.

All in all - the Canon 20D is a well-built camera with a 'Made in Japan' mark on the body. The fact that the camera is almost 10 years old, and it works flawlessly, already says a lot. The battery of the camera holds a charge well, it's hard for me to say how many hundreds of shots it can last, since I used the Canon 20D only with lenses without autofocus.

Example photo on a Canon 20D

Example photo on a Canon 20D

Canon 20D can shoot at speed 5 frames per second. A serious drawback of the Canon 20D is the small frame buffer when shooting in RAW format, which is only 6 shots. With fast burst shooting, the camera starts to slow down after the first second. RAW files are 6-8 MB in size. There is no option to select RAW settings in the camera menu, so the Canon 20D always shoots at 12-bit color depth and with file compression. When shooting in JPEG, 9 pictures are buffered, but the series of pictures with my Transcend CompactFlash 8GB 133x memory card becomes almost endless. For those who shoot in JPEG, small frame buffer The Canon 20D is not a hindrance at all. Canon 20D uses large and fast memory cards CF.

Personal experience

I was very upset by the small frame buffer when shooting in burst in RAW format, which multiplies the beauty of 5fps burst shooting by zero. It's also too bad that the camera doesn't have the ability to use intermediate ISO values. The Canon 20D is now of interest to amateur photographers who do not need the 'modern bells and whistles' of the CZK, almost everyone can afford such a camera, it can be bought for only $ 150. If you know how to handle RAW files a little, then you can still squeeze good pictures from the old Canon 20D, because very important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

It so happened that I tested the Canon 20D immediately in combat conditions, taking it with me as an additional camera for wedding photography. The videographer who worked with me that day was very much surprised at such an 'antediluvian' beast, but he appreciated Porst 55mm F / 1.2which was installed on Canon 20D :).

Sample Photos

Canon EOS 20D Digital crop lens and lens shots YONGNUO YN85mm F1.8 (for Canon EF)... Photos - on-camera JPEG without any modifications. All photos were taken without using a lens hood, some photos were taken using a light filter HOYA 58mm PL-CIR.

Jpeg source photos download from this link (108 photos, 300 MB).

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions:

The Canon 20D is an obsolete camera that can still do a great job. The camera has fast burst shooting, good ergonomics, but not a bunch of modern settings. Recommended for amateur photographers on a very tight budget.

  • Vova

Uh! Arkady, isn't that a ccd matrix?

    • Michael

No, CMOS. Canon, like, never put a CCD, only in collaboration with Kodak.

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, Canon only has a 1D ssd matrix

      • Sergei

Offer such a new one in a box for 50 bucks. I think so. Fot is very good, the display is really small at all.

        • Sergei

          Have you sold it?

  • Alexey

I shot it 7 years ago with her, I had a friend, but I just got Nikon d5000)
It was very pleasant to shoot with it, it looks like a professional camera, with an additional display. It's great to buy one for travel, summer cottages, or for children to study - so that it would not be a pity to break, break.
Now it really costs a penny - 2-3 thousand without a lens.

  • Sanya Beard

The camera is very reliable. I got it from my uncle almost new in 2011 and now it’s already running more than 600000 and still works!

    • Dan

And how did you calculate the mileage on it? Or counted on the frame?)))

      • Rado

Maybe he counted them in folders, in the same place 9999 and then counts again. Not everyone is so “smart”)))))))))))))

  • Then

Hello. Tell me, is there an autofocus adjustment?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Adjustment appeared only since 50d

      • Then

They say there is 40d. this is not true?

        • Michael

          no on 40D

        • Michael

About what they say. This is not a software tweak. On older cameras, there are three (?) Screws for general autofocus adjustment

          • Dima

And where do these screws tell?

            • anonym

              On the mirror unit

  • Dima

The camera is still good, as noted it is important how to shoot and not what. Simple and reliable as a military truck where there is nothing superfluous. Personally, the canon for me in ergonomics and grip is much closer to nikon and more logical. And why are there some floating gum from Nikon, and then the camera is 14 years old and at least that.

  • Alex

You write nonsense about running. Not a single program in the twenty mileage does not determine. Only in the service.

  • Paul

Arkady, thank you for your work and reviews. Please advise: there is a choice of 2 old cameras - Nikon d40 and Canon 20d. Slow landscape photography, good color rendition is very important (in favor of Nikon - a larger matrix size). What do you think is the best?

  • Sergei

I bought my first 20D DSLR in 2011 for 300 dollars (2400 hryvnias). Since that time, they faithfully accompanied me on many trips. Moreover, she suffered all of them practically without loss. The only thing is that from time to time the rubber plugs hardened and cracked. And so the camera survived and shock, and shaking, and temperature changes. Given its price, now it’s just the best choice for a beginner. Well, with 30D. Yes, there are much newer 550Ds, etc. for not much more money. But xxD is xxD, the metal case has saved more than once (no, I didn’t hit my head in fights for the gopniks with a camera :-)), the speed of management is beyond praise, everything is at hand and convenient. And the price is such that you don’t shake over every scratch on the carcass. If you can always buy another one :-).
Autofocus, here's a weird thing. Last year, compared with 6D. It would seem that the vaunted sensitivity of 6D at the center point in low light. But here where 6D did not cling there and 20D did not cling. If 20D clings, then 6D clings. It turns out that under normal conditions the sensitivity of autofocus turned out to be + - the same. Paradox.
In short, 20D / 30D is the best buy today, if you just need to take pictures, without any videos and liveviews.

    • anonym

There is no strangeness. The ability to work with dark lenses refers to the location of the AF sensors, and not to their sensitivity. These are two different characteristics.

      • Novel

Hmm. Well, I looked at the central point for 6D -3EV, for 20D - -0.5EV. There should be a tangible difference.

        • Michael

-3EV most likely with ext. sensors at f / 2.8.

  • Valery

They offer to buy one for 3000 r. I doubt very much, tell me, is it worth buying?

    • Michael

If it's already more stressful for you - why not? So you can see 40d a little more expensive

      • Valery

The first SLR is simple. Not at all experienced. Offered a budget option, so I doubt it

      • Valery

Can you tell me, How, what is better to check when buying? What to look for?

        • anonym

To take for such an amount, just take. A month ago, Nikon d40 was offered for 1000 rubles. came, gave money, left. The flash does not work, flash, for 1t. mileage 20t.

        • Michael

Appearance, mileage, the work of buttons-mechanics, broken pixels of the matrix. In principle, in the internet there are quite detailed descriptions

  • anonym

What is better canon 20d or 1100d?

    • B. R. P.

Models of different class and age. To understand what is best for you, you need to decide what you need from the camera.

    • Nicholas

I would prefer 20d, very good build navigation is convenient, honestly shoots perfectly, I have 20da astro very nice fotik

    • Roman

If there are no special preferences in the direction of 20D (except subjective), the 1100D is better than practical in all respects. Both fotics are from the era of rapid development of photographic equipment, so the younger age of the 1100D makes itself felt. Greater resolution at the same working ISO, less and easier. Significantly better screen for viewing footage.

The top screen will give 20D advantages (I rarely use it on both cameras), 1/8000 shutter speed (usually needed for super-fast lenses like 1.2 - 1.4) and 5 frames per second in a series instead of 3. Perhaps, only the latter can become a significant advantage.

      • Michael

        And another normal viewfinder

      • Dima

Focus at 20d is just lightning fast and accurate next to the stump of 1100d. I had to compare them head to head. The 1100d has a good matrix that is not overloaded with pixels.

  • Wit

Hello Arkady! I am an ordinary amateur photographer, I have thoughts of buying a second-hand digital camera instead of the Samsung soap dish which I am not satisfied with. As a child, I took pictures on film, the last of the films was Zenit-TTL, then the hobby passed. Now the frequency of use is occasionally, on vacation. Lighting conditions - natural, day, evening, sometimes night or artificial. Wishes for the camera: optical zoom (the more, the better), natural color rendering, light sensitivity, preferably from 80 DIN (it seems like an analogue of GOST 65 film?). For some reason I don't like the flash, I try to take pictures without it, hence the requirements for light sensitivity. A special "rate of fire" is not needed, I do not conduct sports reports, but it would not be bad to film a person or an animal in motion. I don’t bother with the DSLR, I understand that the price increases noticeably, but if I get it at a reasonable price, I will not kick it out. Can you advise which cameras you can pay attention to, and what does “mileage” mean for a camera, is it something like, snap off 10000 or 100000 frames and can you take a camera down in the trash? If my porridge turned out, please fix it. Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Mileage on a digital SLR camera means the number of shutter releases. For budget cameras, the mechanics can withstand about 100.000, for advanced ones about 300.000, for professional ones it can reach up to a million. Usually you should not buy an amateur camera with a range of over 50.000. Typically, the amateur photographer remaining 50.000 may be enough for a lifetime (this is 10 frames every day for 10 years). But this does not mean that after 100.000 she will refuse, just as lucky. I have, for example, an amateur DSLR with a mileage of 400.000 and continues to shoot.
As for the cameras, indicate your budget, and besides the camera, you also need a lens.

  • Wit

"As for the cameras, indicate your budget, and besides the camera, you also need a lens."
As I understand, you are from Kiev, which means you are more accustomed to the hryvnia. I am a resident of Rostov (I hope the political differences between our countries are not a hindrance to us :-), in general it would be very interesting for me to normally communicate with a resident of Kiev, not only on the subject of photography), I am more used to rubles. Especially I do not want to spend money, given the very rare use, more than 4000-5000 thousand rubles. there is no desire to give, it is 1000-1250 hryvnia. You mentioned a removable lens in your question, so you assume that it will be a DSLR? By the way, I have a Zenit Helios 44-M with my camera, can I use it? But, given my desire to use the zoom, I probably also need a long-focus lens, which is a lot of money. Found on sale on Avito Fujifilm FinePix HS20EXR, not a DSLR, of course, but the reviews on Otzovik are good, is it worth contacting him or the like? And yet, I know that somehow the mileage can be checked directly in the camera, but how?

    • Valery A.

You would like to take an interest and determine the size of the sensor (matrix). Zenit has a frame size of 36x24mm, digital FAs with a similar sensor are expensive, but there are cropps with sensors 1,5, 2 times smaller diagonally (1,6 canon crop has a 22x15mm sensor). The fuji you have selected has a sensor of approx. 8x5mm, respectively, noise, picture quality will be worse. And there is no hassle with lenses - it is non-removable, and there is no need for helios. Outdated DSLRs (BZK are even more expensive) from Canon (so that Helios fit through an adapter), such as 400-500D, 1000-1100, with the supplied lens, can fit into your budget.

      • Wit

Valery, you have brought me into a stupor. Sensor, crops, BZK - I don't know what it is. I also met a mention of some kind of whale lens ... Well, the matrix is understandable, what the light perceives on itself is an analogue of film. And everything else, a dark forest. What does the sensor size affect? I will study, apparently.

        • Michael

sensor size is “film” size = matrix size. Crop 1.5 are the so-called half-frame cameras. That is, half of a 36x24 film frame. This used to be at the f / a "Chaika", for example. A whale lens is the simplest lens that was usually sold as a kit for a camera (kit kit). With such a budget, it is better to pay attention to the old Canon 350D-400D mirrors and beyond. They will also allow you to use your Helios through an adapter.

          • Wit

Michael, thanks for the clear explanation! And mirrorless, as I understand it, you do not consider professionals as an option? Why did I get interested in Fujik, somehow I shot landscapes and portrait photos on the soap dish of this company, it turned out very well, my similar Samsung ST-60 soap dish is not capable of this.

            • Michael

With your budget - not considered. Either it is a soap dish, like yours, or the cost flies beyond what is permitted, because it is fashionable.

            • Valery A.

What do you mean by a mirrorless (aka BZK for short)? Compact, ultrazoom with a 7x4mm matrix? And a fuji mirrorless camera with a 24x15mm matrix (i.e., a crop of 1,5) is about 100t.r. is the new one worth considering? You should probably understand a little about the basic parameters of digital photos. You can, of course, take the fuji sense, but it seems to me that shooting with a digital camera with at least a 1,5-crop matrix, including helios, would be more interesting (in action and in results), more controllable, etc. , though without the possibility of binoculars - you need a special. telephoto lens.

  • Andrey Vyunenko

I bought such a body on Avito, in collection quality and a complete set, with all the disks, cords, etc. .. Now I'm waiting. As he arrives, I will share my impression. 😊

  • Marina

The burning issue on the Canon EOS 20D camera. Focus constantly smears, all photos are blurred. Please help me find the reason. Or is it a camera problem or is the Canon 50mm F / 1.8 lens to blame? Will replacing the lens solve the issue? How to test the camera? I used to buy from hand because of a very limited budget.

    • BB

Ask your friends / acquaintances / photo store for a different lens and / or camera, check your lens with another camera and your device with a different lens.
“Blurred” photos can be for several reasons:
      a) focusing miss (can be checked with a tripod and manual focus) - it can be the fault of both the lens and the focus sensor;
      b) too small depth of field on the open diaphragm - did you try to cover the diaphragm?
      c) blurring / jitter due to long exposure (a tripod will help, or a short exposure), the movement of the subject (were you shooting stationary objects?);
      d) a defect in the lens itself (lens displacement, for example as a result of an impact), a defect in the camera’s matrix.

  • Maksim

Good afternoon. They suggest to buy 20D, there is no serial number on the nameplate, just a white sticker. Does this mean that the product is “gray”? thanks for the answer

    • Ivan

This means that the inscription has been erased or the nameplate has come off. “Gray” refers to goods that have not undergone official customs clearance. The product itself is no different in quality.

  • Yurko

Time-lapse in cameras from the box, via the remote control. Hto mav (maє) can I do this? 20d
Bo, in the manuals write “time-laps pidrimka”. The one with the same rank. Bo, through the remote control - whether the camera can be time-lapse))

    That, yak schodo tsyogo 20d?

  • Dima

Love my old man) And even though I changed the system, I will not sell it. I will sometimes get it for my soul) Wherever I was not with me, even at 390 degrees Celsius and in Pripyat. And photos from it are bought on stocks in 2021. Color buzz is just especially next to new Nikons.

    • B. R. P.

      Yes, a good car)

      • Victor

Was ... about 17 years ago))

Now it does not stand up to any comparison, especially with new nikons))

        • Dima

Doesn't interfere with taking great photos. And in terms of colors, the new Nikons are already very nasty. No matter how hard you try, it's all the same.

          • Victor

You just don't know how to cook them (c)

            • Dima

Why do I need these dances around the fire with a tambourine when any especially old canon gives almost immediately what is needed?) A bunch of photographers especially shooting people and weddings jumped from Nikon to Canon for this very reason. With canon, the pictures look right almost immediately and everything is corrected with a couple of clicks. And if you compare the jeeps of top-end cameras, then Nikon is simply trampled into a puddle.

    • Dmitry Kostin

Already in the photographs, it is clear that Arkady's camera has entered.
The camera review contains 5 photos of his son and 6 photos of his wife (?) Or a close relative.
This is already personal - no one will take pictures of their loved ones on a camera with a shitty color rendition.
Photos in the review are vivid, bright and even on-camera jpg is very good.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        What?

        • Dmitry Kostin

Arkady, I do not understand your question, please explain.

          • Dmitry Kostin

Arkady, I just often see pictures of this girl and this child. Therefore, I assumed that these are either your relatives, or a son and a spouse.
Forgive me for God's sake if I made a mistake.
PS cancel the pre-moderation for me pliz, this is already exhausting.

      • Victor

“On-camera jpeg is very good”, well, it depends on what to compare with, of course. For me, the camera jpeg is so weak, there is a review of Nikon d40 next to it, so there the camjpeg is just a cut above, but the camera is simply the initial one.

I believe that you can get a picture out of the rav, but the jpeg is pretty so-so, you can't get away from it.

        • Dmitry Kostin

I don't know how you define the normality of a Kamjpeg. Arkady has his favorite settings for CCD cameras and he has uploaded them several times. Photos with these settings are bright, perhaps too much.
I cannot compare the normality of a kamjipeg without having d40 and 20d in my hands, and then these are different matrices in type. Did you have both cameras on hand?

          • Victor

Both cameras were not on hand at the same time, the normality of the Kamjpeg is determined by an elementary comparison. At d40, the colors are delicious, at 20d - no, that's all. Delicious doesn't mean oversaturated, it's just that people look healthy on them. In addition, twenty did not do well with DD in many places, even in comparison with d40.

            • Dmitry Kostin

              Victor, I don't recognize you.
              DD is another story.
Purely subjective, the jeep in the review is good and does not hurt the eyes. The colors are nice.

              • Victor

So this once again suggests that color perception is subjective.

To mitigate this influence, it is advisable to look a lot, including at the work of recognized photographers (not necessarily professionals, but those who focus on natural beautiful color)

              • Novel

All the normality and abnormality of kamjpeg comes down to the transformation matrix from the camera's color space to the target color space (sRGB / AdobeRGB). Perhaps, in 20D, these coefficients were chosen unsuccessfully, with an attempt to get the minimum error in the mean, but in the end with floating significant areas in flesh tones.

            • Dima

It is incorrect to compare CCD and CMOS. For me nirazu in 20d there was no situation when I did not have enough DD for which everyone fiercely fap. There is bracketing if that. Yes, but noisy, but as it were years already.
I filmed her drift, and even at dusk with lanterns, and very good shots came out on ISO 800. A major girl with show-offs was standing next to 5dm3 and when I saw the pictures in the group I did not understand why she needed 5dm3.

          • Victor

Yes, and settings by settings, but this does not cease the camera jeepg to be such. Doubt 20d can be customized to achieve the same result.

In general, based on the proposed reviews, I would not take the twenty, but the d40 is good.

        • Dima

Well, here the examples are really not very good, but in the 350d topic with the same matrix, the pictures are delicious)

  • Gennadmy

I agree with the author. What matters is how you take pictures. And my photography teacher had a saying “There are no bad cameras, there are bad photographers”. Thanks for the review, now I have an idea about this camera.

Did you develop it through Canon DPP?
Considering the price on the secondary market for 20D - excellent)
D40 also has nice colors :)

      • Dima

No, through ACR and the profile it seemed like a landscape camera. Canon profiles, unlike Nikon, are very good. 20d gives a really cool color, you look through old photos and eye balm)
I also want to try the d40) And most importantly, it’s small)

        • Dmitry Kostin

          Thanks for the reply.
I’m just used to standard native free programs - they almost always give excellent results, they are convenient and require a minimum of body movements.
D40 in good condition for good money is becoming difficult to find, D3000 is easier.
Yes, they are both small and light. You don't feel the weight anymore than larger cameras.

          • Dima

We're running out of options, we just have to wait)

I tormented this DPP and damn it, everything was wrong and everything was wrong, it didn’t work for me. I don’t even understand. And what for if the camera profiles are excellent, and the Adobe camera is very friendly with Canon. Nikon had the same problem with capture NX. He spat and returned to his usual routine. We also need to try Dxo to download the thread.
