What is a monopod?

A little note about a monopod.

It looks like a monopod

It looks like a monopod

Monopod Is a simple tripod with only one leg. When shooting, a monopod can partially reduce camera shake ('shake'). Usually the leg of the monopod has a telescopic structure of three parts. The monopod leg can have either a plastic tip to avoid damaging the floor, or a sharp tip.

The monopod itself is usually very small and easy to transport. My monopod fits easily into a small backpack. Monopods are also distinguished by their head - there are monopods without a head and with a head. The head rotates and allows you to get more degrees of freedom when working with the camera, it can be level and can be easily removed from the very 'leg' of the monopod. In general, it is for the head you pay when buying an expensive monopod. There are any heads, I rarely work with them, therefore I cannot describe them in detail. Whoever has a desire, unsubscribe about this in the comments.

Monopod is very, very convenient to use.. Unlike a tripod, monopod camera is easy to move from place to place, changing the location of the shooting. When I get tired of a heavy ligament camera + lens + flash for a day, it’s very nice to ease the pressure on my hands with a monopod. I really like to work with a monopod in a variety of situations, with it you can completely compensate for the vertical displacement of the camera and shoot at slow shutter speeds. And if you get a hold of yourself and choose right stance with a monopod, you can shoot no worse than with a tripod at sufficiently long shutter speeds. The only thing I don’t like is that monopods without a head do not allow you to use the camera in portrait mode. I lost my first monopod without a head at some wedding. The monopod gives a good level of freedom when working with the camera, which can not be said about a tripod (tripod).

Very often, a monopod is used as an assistant when working with heavy lenses. In such a bundle, the lens is mounted on a monopod. This method of using the monopod is commonplace for photo hunters and sports photographers with hefty and heavy lenses.

I often use monopod instead of special flare crane. Thus, the monopod can work both as a monopod and as a mobile stand. My assistant usually rushes with a monopod on which a flash is mounted with an umbrella for clearance, as shown in the photo below:

Monopod as a mobile stand for lighting

Monopod as a mobile stand for lighting

In most cases, I use a monopod specifically for these purposes. By adjusting the height of the monopod, my assistant can do incredibly useful things with him.

Monopods are used not only by photographers, but also videographers (videographers). Usually a camcorder is much heavier than a camera. Videographers use monopods for such purposes. The choice of a monopod in the general case depends only on the depth of the owner’s wallet and on the planned load weight.

Conclusions:

Monopod is a very simple and very useful device for reducing the shaking effect when shooting handheld. A small monopod is very light and compact and allows you to stabilize the camera well. The monopod can also be used as a holder for external flash.

I also have it, I rarely use it, but even then as a "gingerbread"
And also a very useful function: when the monopod dangles on the wrist when folded, the punks do not ask stupid questions or distract :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, an interesting use case :)

      • Basil

I use a monopod in conjunction with bigma 150-500mm. shooting birds, or shooting a scene

  • Edward

like a “crane”, of course :))

Good article - hint! Not many do not even think about the benefits of the device, but it really helps out, albeit not often, but for sure, if used correctly.
A monopod is not very expensive, little space is taken up in a backpack in the hallway in front of the door (and you won't forget if necessary, and again - a self-defense weapon :)

    • AnalitiKo

Yes. Photography is a very dangerous business))) the more monopods, the less risk)))

  • Andrei

Then the choice for a monopod with a sharp tip - the options for use against gopota increase dramatically. If a note on the topic, then the monopod can also be used in portrait mode if the lens is equipped with a rotating arm / leg.

  • Sergei

Arkady, do not your cameras work with flash without a synchronizer?

    • Arkady Shapoval

They work. But for greater certainty, in some cases I use a radio synchronizer. For example, when the flash is with an umbrella in the light, it is difficult to turn the trap toward the camera, especially when the assistant is behind.

For fans of shooting video, I can recommend a monopod tripod
Sirui P-424X, I have one, I can’t get enough of it, especially since the company has already lit up on the photo :)

I would also like to see an article about tripods. On the topic of why expensive tripods are better than cheap Chinese, otherwise the price difference reaches an order of magnitude.

  • Shantar

    Very interesting.
At first glance, it is a completely useless thing. After all, when buying equipment about a monopod, you don't think secondarily, but - you don't think at all! If you need something to fix the camera, first you work on a full-fledged tripod - high, heavy, solid and durable, with a head at any angles and fasteners for your equipment, which can wow! how much to weigh, which means - reliable. Then think about a second tripod, a smaller tabletop one for macro, but just as sturdy. Of course, I do not consider the Chinese good-natured people in principle. And only then the thought will come to mind - what is it, a monopod, and why is it nafig, you need it, if it would seem that you can always do without it - lean your elbow / back against the wall / tree / railing / chair, etc. and take a picture of everything you need. But no! Despite the fact that the monopod holds the camera only in one plane - vertical, but this may be enough for shooting on the fly - on a hike under a backpack, on a walk, in a column, in a bunch of climbers, and so on. Its convenience lies in its mobility, quickness of deployment, if it is necessary to frequently change the shooting point, low weight, and if not needed, it is always easy to find where it is narrow, stick it in or fasten it to free your hands. Unlike the same tripod. In a word, I am for.
Although I myself always successfully use the extended ONE leg from the tripod when I need it. Unless, of course, there is nothing to lean against.

do not confuse pods and peds, tripod - tripod with three legs, monopod - one-legged tripod

Not out of stinginess, not out of poverty, but after using the shops, I made three monopods with my own hands. I used a bamboo rod and ski poles as stable materials. The latter already have a “lance” at the end (it can be closed with a rubber cap, attachments for reeds). The height of the monopod is optimal - for your height minus “one third of the head”, ie. at eye level. It is possible and slightly lower ... You can make two or three or four components (like a fishing rod dock). I really like the monopod a la kiyok travel cane. It is good to chase even a pack of dogs with such a cue stick - a reliable spreader, without breaking. There is a version with two knees (110 and 70 cm).
Yes, the magnesium camera grip is embedded in the first elbow - it is held tightly by epoxy. It is also better to make a “pike” of your own - from a piece-cut of stainless steel (for me it is a pike-sharpening from a 10 mm piece of a rod).
I will not exchange my monopod for any purchased one.

With this monopod, making cool selfies has become intriguingly easier. Especially pleased with the Bluetooth shutter button. And the price is only 870 rubles. Bought here:http://pup.ru/catalog/usb_gadgets/prod-2965/

    Hello. Help me please.
I have a Nokia Lumia 720 phone, I want to buy a monopod. I went to the store, connected the monopod to the phone, and he does not take pictures ... ..what is the breakdown?

    • Lynx

      Thick. Let's do it again.

    • Ruslan R.

The problem is that you forgot to tie an additional RGD-720 synchronization module to the Nokia 5. If available, F-1 will also go. The main thing is not to forget before starting shooting to squeeze the safety antennae and pull out only the autofocus activation ...

On the bluetooth, the button on the selfie stick and the smartphone do not seem to be connected. There are no such problems with an android, as well as with ayos, but Windows can be buggy. Check if the bluetooth works with other devices. If so, it's a stick, if not, it's a phone.

  • Valera

Is it necessary for a monopod to have a phone with a good front camera, or is there a built-in camera that takes pictures when the button is pressed?

    • Sergey

Monopod and selfie stick are two different things. A monopod is a one-legged tripod for a camera. There is no built-in camera and it is impossible to fix the phone. the mount is designed for the camera.

  • Sofia

I took a monopod here http://ru-mi.com/accessories/dlya-yi-action-camera/monopodyi/ The quality is excellent, the monopod stick is quite long. With it, the pictures are excellent, even if you are completely alone. There you can insert a smartphone and a camera. They are fastened securely, do not fall. In general, I am completely satisfied with the monopod and recommend it to everyone!

"And if you get the hang of it and choose the right monopod stand, you can shoot just as well as with a tripod at long exposures."
Specifically, what is the maximum shutter speed: 1/5 ″, 1/2 ″, etc. and at what focal length of the lens did you manage to shoot?
The question is not idle. Before buying, I would like to hear the answer.

  • Andrey

    Good afternoon.
I plan to buy a monopod.
    Everyone advises this one:
    https://www.pyn.com.ua/shtativy/shtativy-manfrotto/monopody-1/manfrotto-mvmxpro500-monopod-dlya-video.html

Do you have any experience using it?
They say that in the new version the head does not rotate, and the rotation is due to the cassette below.

Very interesting is the practical experience of use.
I would be very grateful for the answer.

From the shake of a monopod is not a panacea! When buying, I was counting on such an application to “overcome” the shake at long shutter speeds of 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, but after several comparative shots, I realized that there was no sense, although the stick on one leg stabilized one at a time axis from the floor, but from the swaying of 360 degrees around its axis, almost no stabilization occurs! And with the hands and with the monopod the difference is not big, with the hands of even marriages less. I decided for myself that the monopod is only good at unloading for large and large lenses, if you shoot for a long time, well, or for video, smoothness can be achieved with certain movements. And stabilization is almost zero, it makes no sense in this.

Bluetooth is not the most relevant thing now

On the bluetooth, the button on the selfie stick and the smartphone do not seem to be connected. There are no such problems with an android, as well as with ayos, but Windows can be buggy. Check if the bluetooth works with other devices. If so, it's a stick, if not, it's a phone.
