Tokina AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8-4.5 Macro lens review for Nikon

Tokina AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8-4.5 Macro is small and light standard zoom lens from film cameras. The lens is old, but quite working. This review presents the Tokina AF 28-70mm lens with 'F' mount for Nikon cameras. This lens will have good functionality on Nikon FX full-length cameras, but on Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be equal to 42-105mm, while the versatility of the lens will be lost due to the lack of the ability to use a wide viewing angle.

The lens is interesting for its modest price, good build quality (made in Japan) and a pleasant combination of focal lengths and aperture. F / 2.8 @ 28mm is a very 'nice' figure, F / 4.5 @ 70mm is also very good. 28mm and F2.8 easy take pictures with hand in low light conditions.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Auto focus speed is very fast (fabulously fast!). When focusing, the front lens rotates and moves forward. The focus ring is very narrow, rotates 90 degrees. The minimum focusing distance in normal lens operation is 70 cm. Macro mode in the lens is used more for show than for real good macro shots. The lens has a focus distance scale, but no DOF.

Enlightenment of the front and rear lens of the Tokina AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8-4.5 Macro lens for Nikon

Features Tokina AF 28-70mm F2.8-4.5:

  • To switch to Macro mode, you need to turn the zoom ring further than 70mm.
  • Auto mode does not work in macro mode. This is not a big problem, but still, it is very inconvenient, given that there is no focus mode switch on the lens itself. In macro mode, the lens does not disconnect the focus ring from the camera’s focus motor, to switch to manual focus, you need to use the focus switching lever on the camera itself.
  • Zoom ring spontaneously snaps into place at a value of 70mm.
  • The lens has an aperture control ring. For the lens to work properly on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the F / 22 value using the aperture control ring on the lens itself. Tokina AF 28-70mm F2.8-4.5 is Non-g lens.
  • The minimum value aperture at 28mm - F / 22, at 70mm - F / 36.
  • Number of petals aperture only 6 pieces.
  • It’s bad that the lens is not able to transmit information about the focusing distance to the subject, this can be the reason for poor metering exposure when working with flash. In more detail here.
  • The standard front filter diameter is 52mm.
  • The mount of the bayonet mount is metal; some other parts of the lens are also metal.

Sample Photos

All photos are unprocessed. At 28mm, the lens suffers from severe chromatic aberration and vignetting. Overall image quality is good, and sharpness may be lacking on DX cameras with high pixel density. The bokeh of the lens is slightly unusual, 'bubble'. For distortion, color rendition, etc., see examples:

Conclusions:

Tokina AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8-4.5 Macro for Nikon - cheap universal zoom lens for cameras with a focus motor. The macro function is very weak. Not recommended for Nikon DX cameras. The lens is interesting for its fast auto focus, compact and good aperture F / 2.8-f / 4.5.

  • Dmitriy

    Thanks for the review.

  • Nicholas

There is Tokina 80-200 \ 4, if there is interest, tell me where to send it, I would really like you to do a test for it. I read the blog with great interest, of the blogs that I managed to find, I mean blogs on photo technology, your most interesting.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I wrote to you in the mail.

      • Alexey

Arkady, thank you for the blog, I learned a lot from it over these two years, starting to take up photography. Arkady, I understand that you already have enough information on third-party lenses. But please advise me, I’m shooting weddings and I need a universal fast lens (f2.8 at all focal lengths), a full-frame lens (I photograph on the d7000 crop, but then I’ll go to the full frame anyway, someday it will happen for sure)). I looked at a lot of reviews on tamrons, toxins, sigma, vivitars from you, but I didn’t understand what to take from this, to make it sharp, on all apertures, without any soft effects, assembly-quality, with autofocus fast and could withstand rain eg. Just what kind of reviews you have not read, everywhere there are some unpleasant nuances.

        • Arkady Shapoval

There are always nuances. I have not seen the perfect lens. From your comrades, look at the original Nikon 28-70, 24-70G, 24-70E or Sigma 24-70 Art, Tamron 24-70 VC

  • Oleksandr

    Crazy for the test.

Already close two months, mute, you can like "Vkontakti", the button was clicked. How robiti?

And how to send you 28-70 Tokin for a review from Russia? Far East.

        • Arkady Shapoval

You don’t need to send from Russia, it’s too troublesome)

  • Ivan

Boke is very extraordinary, peculiar. I don’t even know how to perceive it as a virtue or a disadvantage :)

  • anonym

And Tokina 28-70 2,8, from the first, didn’t overwhelm anyone with a chance to give Arkady a test?
And if you screw it on s pro 5 from Fuji, it would be interesting. Well, that's so thoughts ...

    • Sashko

Bula is such in me (Tokina AT-X AF 28-70mm f / 2.8), Skoda and I can’t sell it anymore.
In the hatch, the lens is adequate with a shvidkoy (navіt duzhe) autofocus, +/- normal ХА, garnim bokeh, garn transmission of colors.

Z minus_v, then the front lens was spinning (bula problem, like a hood, so filter), winder is good, good health is weak (on D300, it was worse).

      • anonym

There was such a thing (28-70 with 2.8), but autofocus is very fast, well, that’s probably all the advantages ((I shot on the crop (d300s) on 2.8 the picture is very soapy, more or less sharp from 4, so I don’t see the point in the acquisition ((And of the minuses, like most third-party lenses, the back or front focus suffers on nikon. Undoubtedly, the appearance of the lens is very solid and the weight is not weak after it is 50-k like a toy. I’m not afraid to express the opinion that the crop is native 18-55 with stub it will not be worse, especially for those funny that they ask for him.

    • Amatich

There is one sitting just once on Fujik with a 5 pro.

  • Sergiy

Good day, what about Tokina f / 2.8 28mm RMC on the Canon Crop Sensor Matrix? Can you tell me something more?
    Дякую

  • Pavel

I’m not reading the first review of the author, about anything in general. I mentioned in the title that the lens is macro, but the scale is not voiced. Examples of photos in the reviews are most of the angles. I do not understand people who admire your reviews.
All of the above written IMHO.

    • Paul.

Namesake, well, first of all, do not like do not read. Write better, if you can, we will read you. And personally, I also think that here are the best and most useful reviews and descriptions of photographic equipment.

  • pilotkins

Arkady, well, tell me Tokina AF 70-210 / 4.5
I want to buy, but the seller claims that autofocus works only on a film camera, only a manual on a figure. Infa did not really dig.
    Thanks in advance

    • Ivian

This tokina was produced for different systems (Pentax-k, Nikon-f and minolta / sony), and even under different brands (tokina, prorokinon, soligor, etc.).
So, on minolta / sony and pentaks, af works on any autofocus cameras, on nikons, only on cameras with a screwdriver, no difference in digital or film.
The lens is quite rare, but quite decent and not expensive. This is a "beer can" with a good picture and color, pleasant blur and high sharpness starting from the open aperture - this is from the subjective =).
Objectively: very good construction - glass and metal, high focusing speed, inconvenient manual focusing, not very good enlightenment (the lens is clumsy and the contrast drops in backlight) - a hood is needed, a rare filter thread is 55mm. Despite the fact that it has internal zooming (when the focal length changes, the size does not change), when focusing, the front lens rotates and the trunk crawls out about one and a half centimeters.
In any case, before buying a lens (like any other), you need to check because they were removed from production 20 years ago, and that no one knows what he survived.

      • pilotkins

        Thanks Ivian.
        This is Tokin Fornicon.
Yes, I mentally understand that I should work with a screwdriver, but the seller says that he does not see the diaphragm on Nikon d90, although he fastened the latch in the extreme position ... But there is no way to check it ... he is from another city and does not really agree to send them. Thanks again!

        • Ivian

          Yes, nothing.
I can say about the Nikon version that the lens works perfectly with the d300. With d90, according to the logic of things, it should also work without problems. Honestly, I would not get involved in buying this glass without checking or add money and look towards AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4.

          • pilotkins

            Ivian, thanks again.
            Budget ... but I will save :)
            Thank you good luck

  • Vetal

Arkady, hello! Help, such a problem: I purchased this Tokinu. I checked it quickly, for which I paid. First I was on Canon 40d: soap, no sharpness, HA are just monstrous. I wanted to get rid of it, but decided to try it on the Mark II n - after all, the glass was originally film. The result is better, but not much. Sharpness is a little plus, but HA is less. What do you think is the problem, maybe you just need to adjust? Thank you in advance!

  • Sherlock

Arkady, according to Tamron AF 28-75mm 2.8 system is not programmable. Tim is bigger, you can see the difference in the quality of the Tokina models - on the other forums, I didn’t mind the strong vintuvannya at f / 2.8, but I’m trying to keep the software even better - that’s who.
Mayu pitannya: did you give us an asset for a photographic camera on a floating camera? I don’t know about a shorter zoom with a ring of diaphragms.

  • Alexander

Good afternoon, Arkady. I would like to know your opinion about tokina 28-80 f2,8.
I am following your reviews. Sincerely, Alexander.

  • Paul

I got such a lens with my hands, cheaply. It is quite workable. Front focus 5 cm. Cured in the camera settings. The quality of the pictures is satisfactory. Nikkor 35-70 1: 3,3-4,5 gives sharper and better pictures.

  • Paul

About the fabulous speed of autofocus on my copy is not observed. Quite the usual speed.

  • Eugene

Arkady, good afternoon. Met a copy of tokina with f 3.5-4.5. Very tasty price. Looks like yours in the review. As I understand it, there is no difference except the maximum aperture. I want to take for the holidays. For portraits there is Nikon 70-210 f4 and a hundred of lambs. For rooms, fixes 35 and 50 Is it worth it to take this token F 3.5-4.5 for the nature of buildings, etc.?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good afternoon. If for a crop, it is better to take a native 18-70 / 3,5-4,5. If on a full frame - native 28-105, 28-70 3.5-4.5

      • Eugene

Thank you, only thanks to you took Nikon 70-210f4 what I am glad. I take it mainly on d600, but I have not sold d90 yet. I also looked at 28-105 but did not find a copy choir yet. But I think it’s worth taking a token for 45 dol

  • Vasya

Autofocus for Tokina AF 28-70 f2.8-4.5 macro on Nikon D90 does not work!

  • Fyodor

Witam. Posiadam to szkło od kilku dni. Mam z nim problem podpinając go do Nikona d550 w trybie manualnym f22, zablokowana przysłona na mikro przełączniku. Podaje błąd f33. Spóst migawki zablokowany. Czy jest jakieś rozwiązanie tego problemu? Proszę o poradę.
