Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM review

For the opportunity to write Review of Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 Ultrasonic Many thanks to Oleg Dragging, who sent I have a lens from another area.

For Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM

The Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM is a fairly compact 3,75x zoom lens. Interesting for its slightly larger aperture, compared to their darker brothers, whose aperture opens up to a maximum of F / 3.5-5.6.

When used on Canon APS-C 1.6X cropped cameras EGF lens will be 44,8 - 168mm. When used on Canon APS-C cameras, the lens loses its versatility, namely, the ability to use a normal wide angle disappears. On Canon APS-H 1.3X cameras EGF will fit 36,4-136,5mm. The lens can only fully show itself on full-frame Canon APS cameras. Due to the fact that the Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM itself is quite inexpensive, it can often be found in people who upgraded after a whale 18-55.

As for the lens itself, it is assembled in Japan, the body is made well, without backlashes and serious remarks. I was pleased with the fast auto focusing of the lens. Automation focuses really quickly. The minimum focusing distance is 50cm, while you can shoot macro with a magnification of 1: 5. The 'Macro' lettering on the lens is more intended to indicate the MDF than to actually indicate macro capability. But the focusing ring is narrow and plastic; it rotates 90 degrees in the active position. The zoom ring is wider and rubberized. The lens has internal focusing and the front lens does not rotate when zooming.

Important Note: In my review, the lens of the first version is presented (Japan). See the difference between the versions in the review. Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 II USM Canon INC.

The lens can be a super-simplified replacement for expensive Canon 24-105 / 4 L IS USM и Canon 24-105 / 4L IS II USM... The Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM weighs just 370 grams and uses 58mm filters. The lens hood can be fitted with a Canon EW-63B hood, and the hood is also put on the lens backwards.

Sample Photos

When using on camera Canon 350D sharpness suffers a little at open apertures. Perhaps poor sharpness is due to the lack of special elements in the optical scheme of the lens, or perhaps I just came across not the best copy. Nevertheless, there is nothing to complain about with closed diaphragms. The lens handles backlight well, there is no serious vignette on the APS-C camera. The lens has good color rendering and bokeh. I liked the Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM much more Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-135 mm 1: 3.5-5.6 USM IS.

Conclusions:

Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM is attractive for its price, internal quick focus, slightly improved aperture and small size. It can serve as a budget full-time zoom on full-format cameras for simple everyday photo tasks.

Arkady, thank you for the review and for the entire blog! Tell me why my favorite section “Personal experience” has disappeared from the latest lens reviews?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Personal experience and image quality are now in the Sample Photos section.

bright thought: Arkady, here in the examples of the photos you brought reportage shooting, why not make an article about this - “how to shoot a reportage”? :)

    • Vadim

I support. I would like to read both about the techniques of reportage shooting, and about the necessary equipment for a good reportage shooting. Also, many wedding photographers work in the style of “wedding photojournalism”, it would be interesting to hear bright thoughts on this topic.

    Learn to write first !!!

  • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, in the review I indicated for this.

  • Sergei

at 28mm at a wide aperture, of course, is rather weak, but after 50mm everything is very good. I was happy to try it somehow at 550d - a complete failure. I really don't remember what version it was. But maybe it's all about the 350d matrix with ee 8,2MP versus 18MP in the 550d? maybe he just could not “resolve” the 550d matrix normally, what do you think?

  • Eldar

Good evening Arkady, could you advise the lens of the day macro on Nikon. kept an eye on Nikon 85 mm f / 3.5G ED VR DX AF-S Micro-Nikkor. Thank you in advance.

I read the word "soap" and specially reviewed the photos. There is no soap. Everything is moderately sharp, voluminous, plastic and pleasant to the eye. Eyelashes in front of a child's eyes! How much sharper? What kind of soap? it is not and is unlikely to be, but I met lenses to which this word can be applied. Everything is learned in comparison. And over time and experience, views on sharpness, soapiness, noise, etc. change. Everything is relative :) And to add a little objectivity to the lens, I will say that I liked it and the photos, as I wrote above, are pleasing to the eye!

They say it is discontinued. It's a pity (Where can I buy it? And which one can I find an analogue for it? Thanks

hi svetlana do you have 28-105 and how much money is needed for complete happiness to get it

        • Sergei

          Hello! Already bought a lens?

  • Vadim

Thanks for the review. Short but interesting.
I have a question. How to determine the lens I believe. On mine, as I see it, on the test one there is no MK2 at all?

  • Ivan

    exchanged san 50 \ 1.8 for this lens. I think I didn’t stay in the loser, having on hand a Zenith 50 \ 2.

  • Dmitriy

Nice lens. I bought it for a hundred dollars, so I consider it absurd to claim that at 28 it is not sharp on the open one - and who needs a diaphragm 28 at 3.5? As for the teleposition - 105 comes out a good portrait lens for film and a telephoto camera on the crop. With nice bokeh (good aperture 4.5) and good sharpness open. In general, I justified my money many times. Having a 17-35 wide-angle lens, I use this one as a staff on both crop and film.

  • Dmitriy

A couple of frames on film from this lens. EOS 30 Camera. Ilford Xp2 Super

  • Dmitriy

    105 mm 4.5

    Also film

  • Novel

I didn’t like it. pluses are only focusing speed, everything else is so.
Prior to that, I shot on Nikon D80, bought a Kenon fifty kopeck piece with this glass. Nikon 28-100, from the film camera, I liked more.
Subjectively, I don’t like working with the shadow (the picture is kind of flat although the background is blurry), maybe the camera is to blame.

  • Valery

    Good day.
The description of this lens does not say that the rear lens works like a pump.
So it is, or did not mention?

  • Arthur

I really liked the lens, I bought one in perfect condition.
Sharpness, color rendition - on top
But bokeh is not his strongest feature.
tried to compare his head-to-head with the Canon EF 24-105 f / 4L IS ... well, I didn't notice a dramatic difference (especially in terms of sharpness)
    http://fotoyarsk.okis.ru/canon-ef-28-105-mm-f/3.5-4.5-usm-vs-canon-ef-24-105-f/4.0l-is
In general, I bought myself such a campaign in the Sayan Mountains
    :-)

I must say that the lens works great on modern cameras with automatic aberration correction. There is a barrel on the "wide", a pillow on the "body", if there is a problem - edit in the editor. Much lighter and less than 24-105. I use this on 6D - the most used lens, I usually shoot in jpeg, no vignette, no “chrome”, thanks to the correction in the camera, is not observed.

  • Natalia

I put soap on the sony a3500, or the copy is very unsuccessful. It is unclear how to set the aperture manually to shoot on a non-native carcass.

    • B. R. P.

The aperture cannot be set in any way - there is no control ring, and soap - the difference (small) of the flange focal lengths of Canon-44mm and Sony A (Minolta) -44.5mm

      • Alexey

What are you carrying??! Sony a3500 is a mirrorless mirror with E mount; it has a working segment of 18 mm, in short only with Fuji.
And the soap is because the lens was designed for film. In general, he can more or less show himself when aperture is somewhere up to 6,3-7,1, in the open it even lathers on a full frame, it makes no sense to put it on a crop. At wide angles, HA also crawl out at the edges and corners of the frame. Plus it sucks dust under the front lens, the “trunk” moves out by itself, and when zooming in, the sound is as if sand were poured into it. "Budgetary" in its purest form.

        • Parnisha

Couldn't get past. I think you got a dead copy, maybe after repair. "Hobot" never leaves, even if you shake it on purpose. The Japanese assembly will never let you down.

  • Olga

Put on the hood. You can only dress someone

  • Oleksa

Has anyone tested on EOS R (RP) (R5)? How does he behave? Are there photo examples?

    I will be grateful ✌️

    • Dmitry Kostin

Olegas seems to be winding him up on R5.
For the video, he said - normal, for the photo, not so much.
Yes, and it makes sense if there are already three versions of 24-105 / 4L IS - two for EF and one for RF.

  • Oleksa

After testing, you can take a video. At 28mm, the screwing is stronger. For photos - so sobі rіch

  • Oleksa

Now I’m thinking, why take it) can you є yakіs іnshі virobniki by zoom-s on the yak varto get respect?
