The Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 is a good old 'dark' telephoto zoom lens from film cameras. The zoom ratio of the lens is exactly 3h. There are three Nikon autofocus lenses in the 70-210mm class:
- Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4 - Nikon's first ever autofocus telephoto zoom lens. It was produced only in Japan. Interesting constant aperture and internal type of zoom. Non-D version.
- Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 (MKI) - The second version of the lens from Nikon class 70-210mm. It already has a different optical scheme. Only available in Japan and became not a replacement for the MKI version, but an addition. This lens is presented in this review.
- Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6D (MKII) - third version. Optically exactly the same as MKI, just upgraded to version D type lens. It was produced in Japan and Thailand. You can find more details about the differences from MKI here.
Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 has a piston design. In order to change the focal length of the lens (zoom), you need to pull or push the front of the lens. The piston grip is very comfortable, the ribbed surface of the piston control ring turned out to be plastic. But the ribbed surface of the focus ring is made of rubber. Unlike single-ring lenses, the Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 has two rings that share the focus and zoom tasks. Personally, it’s more convenient for me to use single-ring piston lenses, where one ring is responsible for both focusing and zoom, an example of such a lens is Nikon ED 80-200mm f / 2.8D AF Nikkor (MKII)... The pump mechanism of the lens forces the rear lens to move, which creates the effect of a vacuum cleaner - and this threatens with excess dust in the middle of the camera.
It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Important: the lens has an aperture control ring. In order for the lens to start working normally on modern cameras, you need to set the F / 32 value using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, while the aperture control ring is automatically locked by a special lock button. This button has an orange color, it is easy to find on the lens near the iris control ring. After such a manipulation, it will be possible to control the diaphragm from the camera, like with modern lenses, in more detail in the section on Non-G Lenses.
Auto focus on the lens is slow. When focusing, the front element rotates around its axis and moves forward 2 cm. The focus ring rotates a little more than 90 degrees. I did not find any problems or nuances in the auto focus. The only thing you need to remember is that the lens decently buzzes when automatically focusing. Autofocus speed is exactly the same as Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4. At 70 mm focal length, the lens focuses a little faster than 210 mm.
The lens has a focusing distance scale and two indicators for working in the infrared spectrum for 70 and 105mm focal lengths. It's a pity, but the lens lacks a depth-of-field scale. The number of diaphragm blades is 7 pieces. The lens itself weighs 590 grams and uses 62mm color filters. Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 can use lens hood NH-24which is screwed in instead of a light filter. I really liked that the lens is enough compact.
The disadvantage of the lens is the spontaneous protrusion of the trunk, the focal length lock button on the lens is not provided. Sometimes, when you sharply set the focal length to the extreme position, you can hear a strong metal ringing. Some disadvantages of the lens are fully compensated by the image quality from it and the price / quality ratio.

I bought this lens in November of the 13th year and went with him to Thailand, the photographs were not very pleasing, by the middle of the rest the lens fell into two parts, 3 bolts unscrewed under the front lens, put everything in a heap and attached 18-105 whales. Together with the beautiful Nikon 28-85 ordered in Japan and this 70-210. I still can’t understand where the Japanese get these lenses for sale .. Well, in the sense that they are new)) Both lenses have not the slightest trace of use and not a single speck of dust inside. Really, the feeling is that made yesterday. I gave 120 cu for each with shipment! As a bonus, Marumi filters were included.
The picture pleased me immensely, sharp practically at all focal and apertures, the color reproduction is excellent. Constructive - I do not want to let go of my hands, but just look at a technically perfect thing. Now they do not do this and will not do so. Highly recommend. Recently I bought this lens with a filter for 1800 UAH. Mindful of his disloyalty to the backlight, I bought a hood for him. I am very pleased with the lens. Together with Nikon, D610 showed very good results. Despite the fact that, judging by its appearance, the owners used the lens regularly, the "trunk" under its own weight does not leave. Focusing is noiseless and I would not say that it is slow. Static objects do not lather even at 210 mm. Moving, of course, is difficult to shoot on this focal point, you can feel the absence of a stub. For portrait photography, the lens is very similar. Considering the low price, I recommend it.

Which I already had older, the picture for this money is beyond praise, but it was stolen along with the camera. I didn't have time to enjoy it, but again I could not find it in excellent condition. I got my hands on 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6. I don't know where it was lying all these years, but it looks like it was made yesterday, a couple of dust particles on the lenses during its construction spoke of a minimum of use. About slow focus and noise. Focusing speed is enough in 99 out of 100 cases, where it is noisy, I still do not understand, rather it is not silent, that's all.

I bought this lens at the end of February and was very upset at first. In cloudy, gray weather, the photos from it did not please at all (no colors + Iso had to bully)! But when sunny days came and the first greenery appeared, I was just delighted. The colors are just super! If you close the aperture a little, then the image quality is not much different from that given out by my 50 mm f / 1.8 d. And now I don’t want to remember about 18-70, I carry it with me only because of the wide angle. But there is also a drawback: it gives out a lathery picture when focusing at long and sometimes at medium distances (10 meters or more). And I just can't figure out where the focus goes :( My camera is nikon d7000.
Just today I was filming a football match with this Kasavets. I took it from a friend (I wanted to experiment, I left my Sigma 70-200 2.8 at home). The lens was very pleasing. Filmed in the evening at 21.00 until the end of the first half. Camera d610. ISO 5000. The picture turned out to be something that should be taken into account that this is a reportage, and not a shooting of a fashion love story))) the only thing that was not in the buzz - this transition of the aperture from 4 to 5.6 when going over the focal values, which of course led to drops in the light. And so there are no complaints about the quality of the picture and the speed of afthofocus. Of course, this is AF-S 70-200 2.8))) But prices are almost 15 times apart from each other. In short, I advise everyone who cannot afford a more expensive option. But keep in mind that older models may have problems with lens mildew.

Try changing the metering value, because the same value is not always good for different scenes. He photographed a small object and set the spot metering, and then he began to take the general picture and also received a strong overexposure, since the metering, apparently, did not take into account that the sky was bright, but proceeded from the fact that it was dark in the center, giving out values so that the center was bright, respectively, everything else turned out very bright. I put the metering over the entire frame, the situation improved.
I decided to test it on d40. So, the result was just impressive. The sharpness starts from f10 to f20. There is no problem with manual focus. The exposure on a sunny day is set to -2. Drawing is just a bomb.
I got such a lens almost for nothing, not the D version. The problem is somewhere from 135 to 210 mm, a very soapy picture. On the D7000, the F80 is much soapy on the film. What could be the problem? I didn’t drop it, I don’t know. Maybe this is the case. And is it possible fix? Thank you all in advance.
