Using Nikon Optics on Canon Cameras

Using Nikon Optics on Canon Cameras

Installing a Nikon lens (also called Nikkor) on modern Canon EOS Digital DSLR cameras is a snap. All Nikon lenses have the same 'F' mount. To mount any Nikon mount F lens, only Nikon-Canon adapter. When using the Nikon-Canon adapter the ability to focus on infinity. This is what my adapter looks like:

Nikon AI Adapter - Canon

Nikon AI adapter - Canon

My adapter went to me for $ 15 Please note that there are adapters with and without a chip. An adapter with a chip allows you to automatically confirm the focus when working with non-native lenses. If your adapter is without a chip, then you can stick it on the adapter yourself. Such a chip is called Lushnikov's Dandelion.

Type of adapter Nikon - Canon without a chip

Usually these adapters are called Nikon AI - Canon. But this does not meanthat you can only use old Nikon AI lenses. With this adapter, you can use any Nikon lens from the 60s of the last century.

You can control the iris on Non-G type lenses using the aperture ring

You can control the iris on Non-G type lenses using the aperture ring

Important: it’s very convenient to use Nikon lenses on Canon cameras, which there is a diaphragm control ring. These lenses include all Nikon lenses. Non-G Type. With this lens, aperture control is done manually. For example, I used without problems Nikon 85mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor on a Canon camera.

Non-G type autofocus lens on a Canon camera

Non-G type autofocus lens on a Canon camera

Important: G-type lenses, that is, modern Nikon lenses that do not have an aperture control ring can also be used through such an adapter. But iris control will not be available. The aperture will always be as closed as possible.

You can cheat and use such lenses always on an open aperture. To do this, simply lock the aperture lever (jump) in the open position. This is done very simply, it will not harm the lens. For example, I locked the aperture at the maximum open value for a G-type lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX IF Nikkor using a piece of cardboard. The same can be done by any means at hand.

Then such a G-type lens can be used only at the maximum aperture value. This can be very inconvenient, since aperture is very important for different photo tasks.

By the way, the same adapter must be used to install old lenses with Nikon F mount onto Canon EOS cameras. For example, I installed on the camera MS Helios-81H 2/50 using the same adapter.

Soviet lens mounted through Nikon adapter - Canon

Soviet lens mounted via Nikon - Canon adapter

How to shoot on such a constructor? It's simple. You only have to focus manually using the focus ring on the lens. Fortunately, all Nikon FX and DX lenses have a focus ring. Taking pictures is easier than ever in aperture priority mode, while the aperture can be manually adjusted on lenses with an aperture control ring. On lenses without an aperture control ring, you will have to take pictures at the maximum or minimum aperture value. Such a shooting process is no different from shooting with any old manual lens.

Sample Photos

Question from me to all fans Nikon and Canon. Still, what were the photos taken in the gallery above, on Nikon or on Canon? Leave the answers in the comments.

Personal experience

I sometimes come across the fact that the owners of Canon cameras buy old solid Nikon lenses Non-ai, AI, Ai-s, Ai-converted for shooting video. Nikon-Canon adapter came in handy for me to mount the lens MS Helios-81H 2/50 on my Canon 350D.

Where can I buy

The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com. For example, such an adapter can be bought here.

Conclusions:

Nikon lenses can be easily used on Canon cameras through the Nikon-Canon adapter. This eliminates the possibility of automatic focusing, and for some lenses, and iris control. Focusing on infinity is maintained.

Good day. I would like to ask a question, because I just can't find the answer on the Internet…. Tell me, I have a Canon eos 550d camera and a 44mm f / 2 Helios 58-2.0 lens through an adapter with an autofocus chip So, if I understand everything with the aperture control on the Helios 44-2, I set it to the desired value , focused on the “open” one, then closed it with the second ring to the set value and took a picture. Everything is clear here. And I would also like to purchase MC Helios-81N 2/50 (by the way, thanks to your articles). An adapter from Nikon to Canon with a chip is already available. So the question is how to control the diaphragm now. Do not take me for a teapot, I just never met with "advice" with a "jump rope" and I would like to ask knowledgeable people HOW TO CONTROL THE IRIS ???? Immediately set the desired value on the lens and focus on it ???? Or you can somehow focus on the "open" system with this system, and shoot with a given ... ??? How does this system work on it? Here I am racking my head, but I have not found an answer yet. I will be very grateful for the answer.
Thanks in advance. With uv. Yuri.

And look at the 5th photo from above on this page?

      • anonym

        Miscalculated, 6th photo

“There are a dime a dozen of clever people - there are not enough smart ones ……”
I not only look at the photos, but also read the comments below them - “After that, such a G-type lens can be used only at the maximum aperture value. This can be very inconvenient since aperture is very important for different photography tasks. ”
The question sounded like this - “HOW TO CONTROL THE IRIS NOW ???? Immediately set the desired value on the lens and focus on it ???? Or you can somehow focus on the "open" system with this system, and shoot with a given ... ??? ”
The fact that you can take a picture by holding the jump rope and pounding on an open hole and a forest hedgehog is understandable - I would like to know how to use this system on Boots USING aperture !!!!!!

          • anonym

Personal opinion. Bought Kenon, not Nikon, to use a rich fleet of F-mount optics and M42 threads. Everything works without problems, with the lenses of "Kiev" you need to either aim at the working diaphragm, or open it, and then close it. Not very difficult, but inconvenient. BUT! If you close the diaphragm, it is better to use the "whale". All the charm of Old optics - "open hole"

            • Jury

After "Helios 44-2" it is somehow unusual ... .. Already adapted to the second ring - now, out of habit, he is looking for his finger on the lens. And so the question, in principle, is already clear. Thank you all for your participation !!!

              • Yuriy75

I focus on open 24 and then close (I had to remember the number of clicks on the control ring)

  • Natasha

    help, I can’t figure it out ...
I rent on kenon 5d and helios 81n with an adapter with a chip. I want a zoom with autofocus. if I put Nikon AF Nikkor 5-28mm 70: 1-3.5D or Nikon AF Nikkor 4.5-35mm 70: 1-3.3 (MKII) on Kenon 4.5d, what will not work? autofocus? diaphragm?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Both autofocus and aperture. Everything will need to be installed manually.

    • Dmitry K

neither one nor the other. And the adapter will still be needed. Spit on this idea. Buy 24-105 from canon. There you will have both autofocus and aperture

    • Natasha

      thanks for answers!

  • Igor

Can anyone tell me. I want to put Rolleinar-MC 1:28 f = 135mm lens with Rolleiflex SL35 on Canon EOS, and I can't figure out which adapter to buy ??? I got an advice to buy an adapter from a Nikon lens to a Canon EOS - the advice is based on the fact that the Nikon mount is the same Rolleiflex. Who will tell you what?

    • Jury

Igor, the advice is wrong - the mounts are different, type in Google search “Adapter adapter Rolleiflex SL35 QBM - Canon EOS” and see options

  • Gennady

Hello. An adapter is not put on the Samyang 8 mm lens. Nikon on Canon. I have other Nikon lenses. And the adapter sticks on them without problems. But on Samyang there is no 8 mm. Can you tell me what could be the problem?

  • Gennady

Here is the adapter. From Nikon to Canon.

  • anonym

something on nikon, something on kanon

  • Dmitriy

Generally there are adapters with aperture adjustment from Nikon to Canon:

And more is also written here

  • Valera

Arkady, please clarify the exact name of the minimum adapter required for a Canon camera (I will have either 100D or 700D), on the Helios-81H 2/50 MS Lens. In this embodiment, is it better with a chip or can it be without?

    • Valera

And if possible, an approximate price for it. I am in Kiev.

      • Valera

In general, I figured it out myself, all the answers are on the site.

  • Andrei

I read komenty, again the battle of canon and Nikon. You are discussing nonsense, what is the difference between canon, nikon, sony, etc., everything is the same, just didn’t take it off, everywhere the same thing on the lenses, no one has made a revolution yet, improving one they ruin the other and so on to infinity, how do these systems differ so much only some electronic features and even then in terms of quality, one step in 10 years, the conclusion is shorter than anyone who is more convenient. And the topic of turning one manufacturer to another is relevant only if you have a free lens with a focal lens or aperture of another manufacturer and you don’t really want to buy your own, for example, it’s a pity to money, but in the 21st century it’s a controversial idea to twist the pens. Balap is all this !!! In protest against all brands, you need a camera of one brand, a belt of another, and a bag of the third)))))

  • Alexey

Good afternoon, Arkady! The topic has been covered quite well by you, moreover, for a long time ... But still, I would like to ask your advice: We presented a Sigma DG 70 mm f / 2.8 EX Macro lens, not paying attention to the Nikon mount. I have a Canon EOS 6D. What adapter should be selected for maximum lens adaptation? Thanks. And good luck to you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

If this sigma has a diaphragm control ring, then the one in this article will do. If without a diaphragm control ring, then this will do such... The aperture in both cases, as well as the focus, will need to be set manually. I have not seen autofocus adapters, they seem to be impossible due to the complexity of creating a diaphragm control module in such a thin adapter. My recommendation is to sell the lens and buy something for Canon with an EF mount.

  • anonym

Good day! I ask for advice. What adapter should I buy for the Canon 6d Mark 2 to install a lens with the Nikon f baronet? thanks!

    • Michael

Canon EF-Nikon F. As you wrote, only not all lenses will work fine

  • Natalia

Good day! I ask for help! I have a Canon EOS camera and Nikon DX (AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm) and (AF-S 55-200mm) lenses. Tell me, what adapter is needed for this! Totally confused! Thankful in advance for the reply

    • Michael

      And look a little higher?)

  • vitalitysharp

It seems to me that the photos were taken on a ccd matrix, i.e. fuji s5 pro, or nikon d80, d40? ...

  • Robert

When using the Nikon f adapter, anything goes to the Canon lens (of course Nikon), ai, ais, pre ai

  • Ivan Wolverine

since all Nikon lenses when installed on the CANON “close their eyes :-)))) then through the adapter I put the TOKINA 500 / 100 lens on the CANON 2,8D. his diaphragm can be controlled in manual mode ... then he took it off and with great difficulty freed the lens from the adapter ... I no longer risk it :-)))

  • Vladislav

Hello, if there is an adapter ring for such a case, do I have a Nikon carcass and Canon lenses? I rummaged a lot of the Internet and did not find anything (

    • Arkady Shapoval

On the contrary, it is impossible, either an adapter with a lens, and it is very difficult to find it.

  • Sergei

    Hello.
    Help me to understand.
What should be the adapter with Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI (Nikon) - Canon 6D?
I want to put on Canon 6D - (Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI) you have it in your reviews. At the same time, he indicated the type of attachment DX.
And on all Nikon-Canon adapters that I find, they write everywhere that fits all Nikons - except for DX.

    • B. R. P.

DX is not a mount type, it is a Nikon crop designation.

  • Leonid

VERY grateful for this stuff. I’m an old man, the memory is bad, and I printed all your materials and now use it as needed. The old Soviet lenses remained, they are very high quality, not comparable to the imported ones that they rub against us.

  • VADIM

Hello, please tell me do I need a special adapter to mount the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f / 1.8G lens on a Canon EOS 80D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, I need a special adapter

    • B. R. P.

There will be no af nor iris control.

  • Vio

looking the other way around - you need to install the EF-S 18-55 IS STM on the Nikon D750 camera in crop mode for autofocus to work. Does this exist in nature?

    • Alexey

This is impossible even in theory.

      • Roman

Well, with a corrective lens and a wild harness it is possible, but it will come out even more expensive than a carcass, not like glass. Okay, there would be something big and white set, otherwise a cheap whale.

    • Pokemon

      A terrible perversion.
      No money for optics?
Nikkorov 28-105 / 3.5-4.5d is enough at flea markets.

    • B. R. P.

If you really want a crop mode, those same flea markets are full of Nikon 18-55.

    • US6IBD

What for? The mass of lenses with the same parameters is for both Nikon and Canon.
The reverse permutation will be similar to a joke about a hare with an elephant, which exchanged causal places. One began to be entered on turns, and another had nothing to scratch.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, good afternoon. Tell me please, do adapters for canon ef lenses for nikon cameras with F mount exist?

    • B. R. P.

It makes no sense, the mismatch of the working segments, there is no ability to control the diaphragm.

      • Vladimir

Probably better to look, and in this case, Helios under Nikon and an adapter with confirmation of focus, right? On Kenon, native autofocus fifty dollars can be found up to $ 80, the closest native on Nikon is d5100 FROM $ 150. Dear pleasure.

        • B. R. P.

Look for it. For example, Helios-81N, immediately with a Nikon mount, an adapter is not needed, the average price is ~ 25-30 $. There are Soviet lenses of other focal lengths with this mount; there are reviews on this site. If you are also interested in autofocus for inexpensive, you can pay attention to the products of Yongnuo, reviews are also present on this site.

    • Michael

      In nature, no

  • Alexander

Good afternoon, Arkady and all the good people !!! I read, it seems everything is clear, I have such a question. They gave me Canon 5D Mark 3, and in addition a 100-400 telezoom, which I did not even dream about. It would seem like something else to want, but 2 days before that I accidentally bought an 80-80 / 200 mk2.8 lens, almost new from Japan, on an old Nikon d1, by plane. Of course, now it’s the most thing to migrate to the full frame of Canon to reveal itself in all the glory. I looked at the links to Ali, there is a whole bunch of adapters from Nikon to Canon. Advise who has experience, and which is better to take in order to withstand the weight of 80-200 \ 2.8 of glass and metal ????? There they are somehow flimsy.

    • Gregor

You want to put on Nikon, 80-200 Nikkor through an adapter to use it in manual mode, I understand you correctly?

      • Alexey

Well, I put it and take it off. what is the problem?

        • Pokemon

          In perversion))

          • Alexander

Exactly !!!! But for this you have to try. I tried it and put it up for sale.

        • Alexander

The problem has already disappeared. The lens just weighs 1,3 kg, the adapter seemed flimsy. They are different, I wanted to know which one is more reliable from those who have already tried

    • Gregor

I read it again and it became funny myself)
      I'm sorry

  • Irina

How to remove such an adapter from the lens ?? Sentry, set it on the autofocus nikkor, and it stuck tightly ((.

    • Alexey

press the latch lever (on the adapter itself) and forcefully rotate the adapter.

  • Novel

Hello! Can Nikon 40mm mikro be screwed to Canon 650d. Will there be any difficulties in the process of photographing?

    • Victor

      There will be difficulties.

It's probably easier to buy an inexpensive Nikon carcass for him.

      • Novel

I want to take canon 650d, it has a touch screen and rotates, it is convenient for a subject. And screw the Nikon lens. 650 now for 10000 you can take.

        • Michael

It will turn out badly. No aperture control and no autofocus

          • Novel

Thanks to everyone who responded. Miser pays twice. I'll take 5500.

            • Michael
